Thanks for your reply and comments. I fell short and landed 9th last year, a significant reduction in draft value from previous seasons. I'll give it another game or two and see what I can get. I suspect, unless I keep this winning roll going, the last 5+ games will be a young squad for reasons you mentioned. Good luck the rest of the year!

Curious, has this thread worked for anyone?

In my experience, playing in the playoffs will give you more manager and team reputation which in turn will let you get high rated players for a cheaper price. Depending on the player, they can either grow a lot or stay stationary. I once had some guys jump from a 88 to a 90-91, but that was also the year I won the cup. Other years, they usually grow 1 overall or stay stationary. the pros of making the playoffs is gaining reputation and maybe a possible overall jump for some players. The cons of making the playoffs is that if you aren't a top team, you wont get every far and you lose a potential top 5 pick as you mentioned, but also there is the lack of fulfillment of not making the playoffs(wheather its exiting early or not making them at all). If the draft class is decent enough I would risk going into the playoffs, but since this years is a bit weaker than previous years, I would suggest playing younger players so they can "get used to" the big club and vs big league teams.

I'm torn. I'm currently 1 point out of the 8th and final playoff spot with 8 games remaining. I'm 14 points clear of 13th. My conundrum is, what value is there to pushing to make playoffs? I doubt I can upset either of the top-2 seeds. So, in essence, I'd just be screwing myself out of a good draft pick. Is there any value to making playoffs? Do players develop a lot in a short period of time? Does team rep go up and players sign for cheaper? What are the pros of that outcome? With as weak as this year's draft is, it seems a lot more pragmatic to play my youngsters the rest of the year to give them GHL development time and take (hopefully) a top-5 pick.

Currently in the GHL, the playoff structure looks like:
 
Series A: Rank 1 vs Rank 8
Series B: Rank 2 vs Rank 7
Series C: Rank 3 vs Rank 6
Series D: Rank 4 vs Rank 5
 
Series E: Winner A vs Winner B
Series F: Winner C vs Winner D
 
Final: Winner E vs Winner F
 
The current path ensures that there will never be the top 2 teams fighting it out in the finals. It also makes it so that the teams rank 4th and 5th have the highest chance at getting the easiest path to the cup. And since the 5th place team is also entered into a better playoff lottery compared to the top 4 teams, it makes it the ideal position from a purely playoffs and potential future success standpoint. My suggestion is to simply change the following series:
 
 
Series E: Winner A vs Winner D
Series F: Winner C vs Winner B

Not a bad idea but imo it would be nice to have a second round also determined by standings, like the highest placed team faces the lowest placed team. That way, if 1st, 5th, 6th and 7th win, 1st will take on 7th and 5th will take 6th. I think it would be more representative of the work done in the season to be among the top 4 teams.

Add recall / assign actions to player popup for 2w contracted players like there is shortlist/remove from shortlist actions

I collect data of all the teams top 20 players (12 forwards, 6 defensemen, 2 goalies), add them all up and compare what the league is looking like every year. This year I thought I’d share my data (players on waivers were NOT counted even if they were better than some players dressed, I DID include players on IR if they were better than a dressed player at their same position, I DID NOT include players in the minors).

If you lay a claim on a CPU player placed on waivers, other teams shouldn't be able to undercut you by trading for him. This is a dirty tactic and is disrespectful of what should be a fair process in the game (waivers). There's currently a manager in Lumber that is trying to do this, and I find it blatantly disrespectful and pretty insulting. The ability to trade for waivered players should be removed if someone has a claim on him, especially if they are on a CPU team. This would make things a lot more fair and make things a lot harder for game-obsessed managers looking to undercut other players with unfair game tactics.

Teams that promote and survive the relegation playoffs have a lottery for the top 4 picks in each round.

I think that there is a mini lottery for every 4 picks. So it's not like the best team has a chance to get the 1st pick from his own pick. I like it because teams separated by 4 picks are typically roughly even in strength and probably separated by luck in the regular season. It also adds a bit of excitement for teams finished in the off season. I dislike it because my GHL teams have always been on the losing side of the draft lottery pick

Yeah that sounds like a great idea Gator...I missed out on soo many good picks because I thought since I will be in the playoffs it wont be good and traded them away. But they turned out to be top 10 picks which were very good in that specific draft. Seeing these odds and getting used to these odds can help me try and predict if i should trade picks or not.

Could you maybe have a message sent out the day before the draft order releases stating the odds of each team to win? There are obviously percentages either way to determine the draft order, so why not release those numbers? It would help us see just how lucky (or unlucky) some teams get.

CENTERS FOR SALE! I am looking to trade numerous centers on my team so I can finish my on-the-run rebuild. I am willing to trade Kenny Karas, Marco Mustoe, and Brendon Smiley. Karas has been a top line center on my team since he has joined my team. He is 30 years old, 94 overall and he has put up 30+ point seasons and had a breakout year last year and the year before. He is on a 1-way contract worth 3.2 million. Marco Mustoe,28 years old and 92 overall, has been a solid 3rd/4th line center for me since I have picked him up. In my opinion he is only a great defensive player. His offence is pretty low, but his defensive categories are off the charts. He has been a great asset on the PK, and for the second straight season he has had 0 giveaways. He is usually not injury prone, that being said he did miss 10 games this season with numerous injuries. Mustoe has a fairly decent contract at 4 years at 2.3 million(3 years left now)  Brendon Smiley, 29 years old and 92 overall, has been a solid second line center both on 5 v 5 and on the 2nd PP. He has played 8 full seasons and he had 3 seasons riddled with injury, so he is very reliable to play the entire season. He is not much of a goal scorer but he does get a lot of assists. He also takes a lot of shots so he is bound to get a goal soon, he has 70 Powerplay points, 27 of which were goals. Smiley's contract in my opinion is a steal because i signed him to a 9 year 2.1 million deal(he is now on his last year of that contract). In return for one/all of these centers I would like to have some younger centers. I would say the 18-22 range and a minimum of 88 overall. Their traits should be majorly blue/green, if there are a couple that are red I will discuss this in our private message talks we will have in the game about the trade. I would like to perform this trade at the midpoint of the upcoming season so that I can base my situation on them, whether go full rebuild or to continue with them all the way until the season after. I'm looking forward to these trade offers via Private Messaging in the game. Thanks.

Hey, just saw this post. I'm Jack, and I am the manager of the Palm Harbor Legends. I have been in game world Howitzer since its BETA days. I really enjoy how the game has evovled and meeting the new managers is great; in the beginning no other manages talked to each other a lot, but with new and great managers like Wick(New Castle, GHL)  and Gator(Unity, GHL), and Jusu(Stony,GHL) the in game communication has improved and has been amazing....

SUPERSTAR FOR SALE! After one last cup with my team, I have decided to move on from my defense man Joshua Metts. The 98ovr defender has consistently put up 50 point campaigns his whole career, just coming off a 51 point season. He has full blue/green traits and is showing no signs of slowing down in his production. I’m looking for a young Defenseman in return, somewhere along the lines of 20yr and 92+ with good traits (minimum blue big games trait). Once the offseason begins, my draft picks will be restored so those can be included in the deal as well.
