I'm ok with the 10%. If there was no budget cost then people could fill two teams full of their own prospects with no regard to finances. In the long run, 10% of a players contract is very doable but some teams will need to make adjustments with the new systems in play. Let's say you want 6 prospects to go into each of your Affiliate teams and let's assume that we are talking GHL budgets. If you have 12 guys with $1 Million contracts that calculates out to a grand total of $1.2 Million in Affiliate costs (nearly the price of one decent player).

I think it also depends on Manager style. Some may want to take the long approach and pick up a lot of young, developing players to build a pool while some Managers may prefer the win now strategy. Either way, I feel Like the 10% contract cost is a good trade off.

The gap in Biscuit isn't as big as you state but it still is very noticeable.

The reason why I asked if just adjusting the talent gap would be enough is because it logically doesn't make sense to have the other promotion/relegation playoffs be one way and have the GHL/SHL one different. Especially if the talent gap largely goes away. Also as you say the talent gap is the reason for you posting then if it is fixed your reasoning for the playoff change (besides just wanting something different) goes away too does it not?

Finally I am indifferent to your idea as, even though I see the good and bad, I just don't see it as an improvement. Chiefly because it just makes things unnecessarily more complicated to have 2 different promotion/relegation systems at play at the same time.

I do think that at least 2 teams should promote automatically with the current system. I played a game where only one team promoted each year (with no fight for a 2nd spot) which made it very frustrating just to finish second repeatedly. However I would think it better that 2 more teams have the chance to demote rather than a chance and another forced demotion. Once a GHL league gets filled with human players and there are no outstanding teams benefiting from a history of AI trade abuse the margin of error becomes rather small to the point where an injury plagued season can see a regular strong playoff team finish in the bottom 5. That said I do not think that we currently have the best possible system in place in terms of making promotion/relegation fun and fair all around. I do believe that we have the best in terms of simplicity which from Anders perspective coding wise is much more important.

Personally I think that once Anders gets rid of the skill gap between the SHL and GHL you will find the system to be perfectly fine.

    Hi!

My league (Lower Iron League) is also very exciting. The Michigan Center Fury has an enormous point advantage, but there is a fierce battle for the 2nd position. The Edgewood Reapers, the Prince Rupert Raiders, the La Marque Topcats and my team the Torrington Thunderbolts competing for this position. After 45 matches the Reapers and the Raiders had 90 points and the other two had 89...

This is my first season, but this game gives me a great experience!

The Fury is the strongest team in the league, I think they will give a great challenge for the other teams in the Iron League next year, Nolasco and Arena leads the charge while the giant Jussilla blocks the attacks, this team has also the best offensive defenseman.

The Reapers has a very good roster with great veteran players.and with an also veteran manager. Sennevile is a great goaltender, and he is helped by the league's best teamwork and winner instict. They are very strong as a team.

The Raiders has three excellent players Germain, Thelland and Cape. Cape (like Nolasco) is a Bronze League level player, this season he has a lot of problems with injuries, but he is a terrific defender with excellent attacking skills.

The Topcats has a very experienced manager, and they have a very solid defence led by Zemancik, a great offensive defenseman.

The Minnesota City Mustangs is a great danger too. They play a cruel physical hockey with a giant center. This team can be very dangerous and they can also reach the 2nd spot.

My team is the youngest in this league (and maybe in the Biscuit world), and I must spend a lot of time with thinking about my lineups if I want to give a challenge for these excellent teams and managers. I am a rookie but my experience with other manager games can give my team a great boost.

I wish good luck to you all for the next matches!

I have made a power ranking for LIHL, I used up Erzac's idea with this formula:

    Team OVR = (OFF + (DEF x 2) + (SG x 2))/26

    1.Michigan Center Fury                    SG 66 DEF 68 OFF 66 OVR 67
2.Minnesota City Mustangs              SG 71 DEF 67 OFF 65 OVR 66,883.Prince Rupert Raiders                   SG 67 DEF 69 OFF 65 OVR 66,804.Smoke Rise Scorpions                  SG 80 DEF 67 OFF 64 OVR 66,385.Chattanooga Rampage                 SG 74 DEF 66 OFF 65 OVR 66,356.Torrington Thunderbolts                SG 70 DEF 66 OFF 66 OVR 66,157.Island Lake Indians                       SG 65 DEF 68 OFF 64 OVR 66,118.La Marque Topcats                        SG 65 DEF 68 OFF 64 OVR 65,969.Romaine Imperials                        SG 65 DEF 66 OFF 66 OVR 65,9610.Soda Bay Cyclones                     SG 70 DEF 64 OFF 66 OVR 65,4611.Hale Predators                             SG 71 DEF 66 OFF 64 OVR 65,4612.Edgewood Reapers                     SG 70 DEF 65 OFF 65 OVR 65,3813.Red River Rockets                       SG 68 DEF 63 OFF 65 OVR 64,3514.South Dayton Owls                      SG 66 DEF 64 OFF 64 OVR 63,8815.North Haven Hyenas                   SG 66 DEF 63 OFF 64 OVR 62,9616.Finnegan Beasts                         SG 70 DEF 61  OFF 59 OVR 60,96  For the Overall score I used up the players overall skill. You can see that the Edgewood Reapers manager is doing an excellent job, this team's strongest point is the winner instinct and the teamwork, as I said.

Erzac reacted to MattBerserkers in Better player training
I've always found training players in this game to be a bit lackluster as I'm always guessing which option will train the trait on a player that I want him to improve the most. For instance, does a player best get more physical by training offense, defense or general? My guess would be through defensive training, but I'm not confident in that answer as I can see arguments for the trait best belonging in any of the options. If you plan on keeping the current system, my suggestion would be to add a help button similar to the one that you have for tactics.

If you're open to changing the system, here's my main idea:

My biggest annoyance with the current system is that often I have one trait that I need to really train, say puckhandling, but overall want the player to get better defensively. I can't really do that right now, it's one or the other. My suggestion is to have all traits train at the same place, but let managers prioritize training any countless number of traits. Maybe even add an option to ignore training specific traits. Obviously, if a manager set to prioritize training to all player traits, it would have the workout the same as having nothing prioritized. The hard/medium/light training thing could probably also continue working in the same or similar way.

I'll use some numbers to help everyone visually imagine how my suggestion would work out, just know that I'm choosing almost completely arbitrary and the math could be improved.

Say no traits are prioritized, then training would boost each of the 10 traits evenly.
Say 1 trait is prioritzed, then 30% of the total training time would be dedicated to that one skill, while 70% would be split between the none prioritized skills. (I randomly selected the 30%, there's no real reason to it.)
Say 2 traits are prioritized, then the 2 prioritized skills would evenly split 51%(30% + 30% of the 70%) of the training time while the other 7 skills would split the remaining 49% of the time. (Again the new 30% is randomly chosen and then the number could probably shift.)
This would continue until all 9 skills are prioritized, and everything is corrected so that they are all evenly trained.

Another similar option would be to have multiple priority levels.
Eg: Puck handling and shooting are given top priority, skating is given the next level of priority and the remaining skills are left at a default priority.

Puck handling and shooting would split 51% of the training time.
Skating would get 9.8% (20% of the remaining 49% of time)
And the remaining skills would split the left over time. (In this case 39.2% of training time, which would work out to 6.53333% of the time per remaining skill.)

Let me know what you guys think and how you think the interface should look, I've got a few ideas in my head, but I want to hear what you guys would imagine as well.

Also, I think this shows the true difficulty new teams coming into the GHL from SHL face trying to be competitive.  Had you run these numbers on Day 1, I guarantee Pegasus and Heroes would have been much lower averages.   Maybe it is too much to expect newly promoted teams to be competitive in Season 1, but this really quantifies the uphill battle they face on Game 1.

I calculated the averages the exact same way that Erzac did in his post, so if you want the calculation rules, visit this thread: GHL s10 power rankings.

This is based on the lineups after the first preseason game, or early day 5.

    A Couple of Notes:
Pinewood doesn't have 12 forwards, I assume they sign an 84 rated center/forward. I may have missed someones forum name, if I have, post below and I'll add it. All predictions are unbiased, no prediction I made or calculation is meant to favour any team, including mine. Simply my opinion. Any star (*) indicates a tie in position in terms of overall. So there you go fishbowl GHL, use this information as you'd like.

8 Predictions for Season 9 in the GHL

    1. Canuck Mighty Rhinos relegated - The only computer controlled team in the league, is likely to suffer the same fate as the computer teams in season 8, Red River Dragons and the South Township Spartans. Owning by far the worst starting goalie in the GHL, at only 84, they should have a dismal season as human managers pick off their stars.

    2. It's the same old contenders - The talent gap after the Cuba City Eagles is immense. The contenders: Larson, Cedar Rapids, Horn Lake, Cuba City, and possible Jolly, should all clinch playoff spots due to the talent difference. Expect Larson to bounce back after winning three league titles in a row and being beat by Cedar Rapids, who will likely finish higher than 8th this season.

    3. Tight battle for 7th and 8th - After playoff runs, Wildwood and Blenheim both regressed, due to old age, and expiring contracts. However, they will both be expected to finish 7th and 8th due to their experience. However, the emergence of the Sellwood Spirits should not be ignored, and the Montmorency Vortex and Wynyard Wildfire both look to make the playoffs as well, possibly the first for both managers in Fishbowl.

    4. Emergence of new talents - At season 9, the stars that fist emerged in season 1, such as Ivar Lund, Eser Heinze, Dominik Svidran, and Nilo Strinberg, all are on the verge of declining, making room for new stars to step up to the plate, starting with season 4 and 5 draftees: Jeffrey Richardson, Joen Jacobsen, and Bo Welker.

    5. Emergence of new playoff teams - After teams such as Hawkeye, Wildwood, and Canuck, who came out of lower leagues and established themselves in the GHL, with managers Matthew Henke, Matt Jaworski, and  Peter T. building formidable teams directly after promotion, and Sellwood also having a great offseason, expect new playoff teams. This will be the first taste of human competition to stay in the league for some established teams, and don't be surprised if a formidable team goes down instead of the recently promoted. Also, the Jolly Rattlers' offense is ageing, and will start to regress, and along with a poor defensive corps for a playoff team, even a 90 rated goalie may not save them from a mid table finish this season.

    6. A decent draft - Analysis of major junior teams throughout the world shows that this draft will be pretty strong, and should have an above average top 10, with okay depth. Early in the season, no game-breakers have emerged yet, but in the USA, goaltender Chris McCready is surprising many scouts with his superb ability, notably his athleticism. He looks like a GHL star for sure.

    7. Expect Batchawana back - The prime favourite for the SHL title, Batchawana should solidify the GHL as a completely human division next season, assuming Canuck is relegated, and their reputation as a 'battlin' team should pull them a long way, especially in hopes of landing them Chris McCready in the upcoming draft.

    8. Team spirit will be important - Looking at the league, other than contenders, the rest of the standings will be anyone's guess. Many are expecting that winner instinct, teamwork, and most importantly confidence will greatly influence the table this season, with such even teams.

Hope you guys found this useful or interesting

To combat some Monday boredom, I went ahead and calculated some average overall stats from GHL teams. Overall doesn't of course paint the full picture of a player's capabilities, and thus is only a vague approximation of what a team can do, but it's the only easily available number for comparison.

Team overalls here are comprised of the average of a team's best 18 skaters (12 centers/forwards, 6 defenders) and the starting goalie. OFF/DEF come from the same players, but are simply rounded up/down to the closest full number for clarity. SG is simply the assumed starting goalie (best overall). Calculations made on day 5 of S10.

Calculations made on day 5 of S10.

Erzac got a reaction from Yann Rock in GHL s10 power rankings.
To combat some Monday boredom, I went ahead and calculated some average overall stats from GHL teams. Overall doesn't of course paint the full picture of a player's capabilities, and thus is only a vague approximation of what a team can do, but it's the only easily available number for comparison.
