  1. an extra attacker and/or hero line.

    Love both of these ideas.

Also maybe a setting where each manager can determine exactly when their goalie gets pulled (1 minute left, 2 minutes, etc...).  I don't know the first thing about coding so not sure how difficult that would be to implement.

  2. Paul the point about real life is telling.   That is exactly the reason to cap the time a trade.  It gives someone a chance to look and if they don't like they don't have to deal with it and more importantly to me I don't have to remember I sent it!

I agree with your logic.  A 3-4 day window to accept a trade would be nice.  Although if I offer a trade, I usually check the following day and if the other manager hasn't responded, I cancel it myself.

  3. I'm with you - I always like to respond to trade requests within a day and usually send a message along with my response.

    However...

I can see how some people would get annoyed at continuous requests and not feel the need to respond, especially if they feel like other managers are trying to rip them off.  Or... take into consideration that maybe some managers don't check in every single day.  I know a few seasons ago I only checked in once every 2-3 days and didn't pay much attention to my messages.  It could just be an oversight.  People get busy with real life, etc.

Nowadays I always send other managers a message first with a potential trade offer.  This way you can get a good idea where they stand prior to submitting a trade request.  It leaves more room for negotiation if the initial trade isn't quite what they need - or you would find out if they flat out don't want to trade, which saves repeated trade attempts or counter-offers.

Thanks for the insight, Steve.  I have found pretty much the same in terms of the familiarity bar when testing this out.  My main concern is for managers who wish to change tactics because they prefer a certain style of play, whether they are just taking over a team or have been afraid to make the change because they don't want to waste most of a season.  In a slow world, waiting for the team to adapt could be painful.  20-25 games seems more reasonable, but that's just me.  I also wonder if the player attributes have any impact on it.  i.e. if your players already fit another tactic better, do they become familiar faster?  I'll assume the answer to that is no.

It sounds like you answered my impact question in that not having a full bar has a fairly large impact on game performance.  I hadn't got that far in my testing and probably won't go any further.

As for the focus, I have heard conflicting opinions on this as well, all from successful managers.  So I guess it's more a matter of preference.  Although I don't know if this information was ever available as part of the "Hints" section that was removed long before I joined.

  5. Bumping this old thread.  Was it ever known how much of an impact tactic familiarity had on game play... or any other impacts?

From what I've seen, if someone wants to change tactics, it will take almost an entire season to get to 90-100%.  I'm wondering if that would pretty much destroy someone's entire season - or if the impact is relatively minor (assuming most of the players actually fit the new tactic).

Something else to think about (not sure if anyone has any input on this?).  Random example: if you find that your defenders are more suited for SPREAD defense, but your current tactic is TRAP.  Is it better to:

    A.) Play Spread at 20-30%

    B.) Play Trap at 90-100%

  6. I am going to add a little to this idea - there are times when one of my teams get an injury that we actually find a way to get a win but more often than not we lose. I think part of that is that it opens up wide the chances of dysfunction occurring on that line thus leading to more scoring opportunities for the opponent. In addiction to adding a SO lineup, could there just be a depth chart option? I like the idea of limiting the active roster to 23 (giving the GM a bench C,F, and D slot). Then for each line you could set who would be the secondary fill person in the case of an injury. While the bench players may not gain a ton of experience on the ice they would still get an added boost for just being present with the active roster (that's all theoretical).

I like this idea.  I wouldn't assume too many teams have won games when a player gets injured early in a game.  I know I haven't.  This is a good solution to that problem - unless there is another way for injuries to not have too much of an impact on the current game?

  7. I think I have a good example of what I'm referring to. In the Clapper prospect rankings the top 2 prospects, at the moment, are two goalies. They both have good traits but the 1st overall ranked prospect is a 90 OVR and is developing at a faster rate than the #2 goalie who is at an 84. When we dive into the stats we find that the 1st overall goalie from the USJHL has a 3.87 GAA and 1 shutout (8 matches) while the #2 goalie has played 7 matches and has a .71 GAA with 3 shutouts (CJHL).

Who would you pick from those two?

6 skill points higher AND improving faster?  I'm taking the 90 OVR every time.

If you value stats more you can always convince yourself that Goalie B played on a stacked team with a great defense thus inflating his stats.  Those are some pretty sweet stats, though...

  8. All my goalies have decreased fit (in health) right now... even if they haven't played a single game so far (not since end of regular season 12).  I guess that's true for all the teams. Why is that?

Happened last season as well if I recall correctly.

Yes, this happened last year as well, but went back to normal around game 2 of the regular season.

  9. Can you post the box score/scoring summary?

This would be possible under 1 circumstance.  All of the player's points were scored on the power play.  PP G/A do not count toward +/-.  Then that player would have had to be on the ice for all opponents goals.  If that is all true, then the player would be -3.

  10. Stats can be deceiving because of the different leagues.  100 points in the Canadian League is much more impressive than 100 points in the Swedish league.

I'd probably lean more towards player development and also factor in Current Overall Rating, Traits, Height/Weight & Injury History.

  11. In order to get out of the bottom four in the GHL, something has to change somewhere. Any advice would be much appreciated.

A few more losses and you will be out of the bottom 4 in the GHL... and into the top 4 of the SHL!  :D

    But all joking aside...

I'm still so confused as to what I need to do to win in Clapper. In the last few games I've won against teams that are better than mine and also lost one in overtime while on the road to the #4 team - but hey, when you're in 13th place with two of your top scoring players injured, a point is a point! Most of my wins have been with my team having less overall Puck Possession, less time in the offensive zone, and less shots on goal. Going into last nights match I figured my team, having a new format that seems to bring success, would have a great chance at another Winn against the 14th place team on my home ice. We had 9 more shots, a higher puck percentage, and were in the offensive zone 53% of the game and we lost 1-3. Not to mention, all players beside two performed within the green or blue...even my goalie at a 77.

I have noticed that in some of my wins, my opponent has outshot me/controlled possession - and vice versa with some of my losses.  But if you track the game flow, it "might" be due to team focus.  I'm assuming many teams go Offensive/Very Offensive when losing, while teams play Defensive when winning.  Especially if you take a lead early, this could explain why the shots would be lopsided in the losing team's favor.  I'm guessing that when you play defensive, you get outshot, but your opponent gets less quality shots/chances.

Also I've found that some tactics just work well against others.  My win % over the last 4 seasons is pretty damn good, but there is a certain offensive tactic (which I will refrain from mentioning ;) ) that always gives my team trouble.  And tactics might also come into play with the possession stat.  Puck possession teams will (or at least should) control the puck more than say teams who implement transition rushes.  I'm sure both styles have their advantages.

Just a few things to think about.

Then again, I've found a few games results that are just totally random and make no sense from a pure numbers perspective... but that type of thing also happens in real life.  For example the Tampa Bay Lightning are the best team in the NHL this year.  The Ducks are the 10th best team in the west and out of a playoff spot... but earlier this year, the Ducks beat them 4-1.

  12. If anyone in GHL (or promoting to GHL) is interested in Emil Kantarik, shoot me a message.  I'm not trading him to an SHL team because I don't want to play against him, but I feel like he's asking too much money for the SHL cap, so don't think I could keep him.

Whoa. Craziness!  In a matter of days, Kantarik was traded from BHL to SHL, SHL to GHL, then swapped GHL teams.  I'm sure he's pumped to be in GHL this season, but his head must be spinning.

I'll be following to see how he does in GHL this year.

  13. You bettttcha! Was a good game Paul, my bottom 6 win the game for us... well and my keeper!  Not pleased about the season ending injury to Mathers though... energy line won't be the same without him.

On a side note, now that my captain is out for the season should I be removing him for the time being or does it matter really?

Good win - and congrats on the promotion.  I tried to see how my team would play if I went to a defensive style and made most of my lines two-way.  The lack of offense makes sense, but it made no different defensively.  Back to my original set up it is.  Sorry about the injury... I didn't play dirty... promise.

    PROS:

88 overall + has been improving 1-2 ratings/year (improved silly season and should be due for another soon)

    25 years old

    Good size

1st in D points BHL (by almost 20), 3rd in overall points, 1st in overall +/-

Rarely injured, played all 60 last year and every game this year (totally just jinxed him)

    CONS:

    Traits aren't great... he's a diva

    Asking for 3.35M salary

Best case scenario:  I trade him now - or sign him for next season and swing him to a GHL team.

Worse case scenario:  I sign him and keep him next season.  I definitely don't want to give him away.

  15. That certainly is true, I have lost so many games this season to teams out of the playoff race.  Has been a nice challenge throughout the season in Bronze.

So true.  Today I lost to the #11 team in a shootout... but that point secured promotion.  The Leopards are headed to the SHL!

(*finishes last and immediately gets relegated back to BHL  )

Good luck in the final 4 games, Brent.  It's a great race for 2nd between you and the Eagles.  I apologize in advance if I beat you tomorrow.  ... but if you win, you might actually have a shot at first considering I've lost to the 3 remaining teams on my schedule.

  16. I had several 3rd place finishes while in the BHL but none come as close to promotion as last season for you - I mean 50 wins and no promotion...that's just absurd!

The bottom half of the BHL wasn't all that competitive last year, so the win % for the top 5-6 teams was a bit inflated.  The Troopers and Panthers both broke BHL records last year for points... they both had insane seasons.  But yeah, 50 wins and I was the odd team out.  Crazy.

The BHL is much more competitive this year, top to bottom.  Better in so many ways.

  17. Ha, well if we throw history in then I notoriously get 2nd place all the time when being promoted so if I am going up chances are you're winning!  Especially now that you nipped Eagles by one goal.

I was sweating out today's game.  The Eagles are a well managed team.

This might finally be the Leopards year to promote after being a BHL regular for the past 9 seasons.

  18. "And here we come again last place moans

Skating down the lonely road to get owned

Like Crosby we all wear too much cologne

...And we've made up our minds

...We'll lose at least 35 more times!

Cause we know what it means...

To skate along the lonely rink of dreams!"

I'm not in Clapper... I'm just here for the 80's Metal.

  19. I've seen different opinions on this so the best advice is to try out different combinations and see what works for you.

I would think that for a Checking line you would need some combination of Power Forward, Grinder, Two-Way.  You'll probably want players with high Physical and Defense attributes.  For Energy you would need mostly Grinders and maybe an Enforcer or Power Forward.  You'll probably want players with high Spirit...and maybe Physical/Skating.  For both of these lines, you also may need Tough/Agitator type players, but not sure how much that plays in.

    * The statements above are purely educated guesses and not concrete facts.

** I have never been able to roll out a productive checking line.

    Good luck.

  20. I appreciate that, still think you got 1st wrapped up and would be just happy beating Eagles tomorrow to slip into 2nd.  I am pretty happy with my team but I am going to have a hell of a time if I do go up.  Pretty much sold my future for the now so will need to start rebuilding some youth into my squads without letting myself slip back down.

I would almost put money down that I will not end up in 1st place.  Almost.  I'm going to limp toward the finish line this season (again).  A few days ago my 2nd best forward got injured for 9 games.  Today my best forward got injured for 10 games.  I have 7 players who are 81+ and 3 of them are injured...

At this point with 9 games remaining, I need to hope either you or the Eagles drop a couple more games.  I hold a 3 game advantage on the Eagles with the point differential tie breaker.  Things would have to go horribly wrong for me to miss out on promotion... but it happened last year, so...

  21. Yikes you booted me around the ice pretty good Yesterday Paul!  Was hoping to give you a better game!

Sorry for the late reply... I was on vaca for a week.  The Leopards definitely took it to you last week - however we have just commenced our end of season slide out of the top 2 spots.  You have been on a tear since.  We have one more game against each other and I'm thinking it may decide 1st/2nd place in BHL.  Good luck the rest of the way... you have a pretty damn good team, especially for just promoting from IHL.
