  1. I'm liking this more and more. Can we somehow convince Anders to include this into the game? NTs would be playing some games independently, 1 per week, or only before/after regular season as some World Cup/Championship. It would be interesting to have this also with injury risk and experience added to players. Each NT should have manager, elected from the managers in the world, I guess. And the manager will make the selection.

Love it!  Maybe a 16-team single elimination tournament that runs simultaneously with the playoffs.  NT managers are limited to choosing players who are NOT playing in their team's playoffs.  Or the other option is to run it during "Silly Season" and all players are eligible.

Checking through the top players, the following 16 countries could field teams.

Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czech Rep, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, Norway, Ukraine, Denmark, Austria, Latvia, Belarus (OK, that's 17...)

    How to convince Anders

  2. Do you have an example of the wording?

I started looking into the post game comments around team tactics this season to try and make sense of a lot of things.  I even changed a bunch of tactics/lines from game to game and had other managers send me what it said about my team to see where it was different.  I think I had most of it figured out, but then put my research on the back burner (busy job, wife, 3 kids sometimes demand priority :) ).  I'll pick it up again shortly.

  4. Amazing idea for a post!  Love this type of stuff.

Although I am from the United States, I am of 100% Italian descent.  Therefore I have put a team full of Italians together.  Forza Azzurri!  And even though we would probably get relegated to IHL by mid-season, we have the most beautifully sounding team. ;)

    * I realize I did not follow the 6-10-8-3 roster format, but I could only click through so many pages to field a full team.  Ha!

  5. Managed to squeeze out a new SHL record with 149 points. Hopefully the form carries over into GHL.

Nice.  I must have missed that earlier.  Congrats!

As a follow up to my post above, the Highland Troopers ended up breaking the BHL record with 158 points.  Congrats to Ozzy.

I ended up with the 3rd highest point total in Biscuit this season.  Unfortunately the top 2 teams were also in BHL, so I'll have to try and promote via playoffs.

  6. With 11 games remaining in S11, the Biscuit single season team points record is on watch for two separate leagues.

    GHL

The Protons currently have 128 points and are looking to break their own single season record of 150 points set in S7.  (potential points 161)

    BHL

The record of 153 points is currently shared by two teams - Grizzlies in S1 and Rhinos in S6.

The Panthers currently have 131 points and have won 31 of their last 32 games.  (potential points 164)

The Troopers currently have 128 points and are not far behind.  (potential points 161)

    /\ /\

And if it wasn't for those two Sons of B's, I would be feeling pretty confident about promotion right about now.

  7. Maybe your team is full of injury prone players... are they named Letang or something like that? :)

Haha... I was thinking that.  But then I realized that guys who were able to play a full 60 games last season are suffering long term injuries this year.  Sorry to keep posting the injuries in this thread.  I just checked my play by play from last game and to add insult to injury, my player was injured with 30 seconds left in the game... and below are the sequence of events... wins faceoff/gets hurt/takes shot/game over.

  8. Paul, have you taken a look at the assistant report after each game? Are your players tired, do you keep their training at hard and do you play it dirty or safe?

The only players I have ever seen tired are 2 of my defensemen who play both ways on PP/PK (and my goalie of course), but even that is rare.  I have my lines spread out fairly evenly.  When they appear tired, I decrease training and lower their playing time.  Oddly enough, my 1 player who gets tired the most has not been injured yet this year (jinx, crosses fingers, caresses lucky rabbit foot and holds breath...).

A few weeks ago I had lowered all my training to Easy and Medium, but the injuries kept comin'.   I don't want to give out my play style secrets ;) but I rotate this based on opponent.  I can honestly say that I play Hard very rarely and have only played Dirty once last season (I'm not a jerk... ha!).

  11. I'm sure it is already common knowledge that teams get a boost when playing at home.  I decided to do some quick research into how much of an advantage the home crowd gives their team. I know there are many variables that could affect this such as injuries, starting goalies, etc - but my results seemed directionally consistent.

First, I took a look at home winning percentages for all GHL, SHL & BHL teams.  For the purpose of a percentage, I considered OT/SO win a win and OT/SO loss a loss.  The average home record and win percentages are below.

    GHL:  11 - 2 - 2 - 8 = 56%

    SHL:  12 - 2 - 1 - 7 = 63%

    BHL:  12 - 1 - 1 - 9 = 56%

Second, I took a look at my own team's history to determine how my home record compared to my overall record.  For example, my Win % this year is 80%.  My home Win & is 83%.  An advantage of 3%.  Last year, my Win % was 72% and my home Win % was 83%.  An advantage of 11%.  When averaged out from Season 1 - 11, my average home ice advantage was 6%.  This falls in line with the GHL/BHL results above where home ice seems to add a 6% advantage.  SHL seems to be the outlier.

Finally, I tallied all goals scored in BHL this year (I did BHL since that's the league I'm in).  On average, the home team is scoring 3.8 goals per game, while the visiting team is scoring 3.3 goals per game.  The home team is scoring 53% of the goals.  I did the same for GHL and the results were 2.66 Home for 2.27 Away.  The home team is scoring 54% of the goals.  These numbers seem a bit lower than the first two sets of results.

For now, until I have a chance to do more research and understanding that there are many variables that could sway these numbers, I will conclude that the home team gains a roughly 5% advantage.

  12. I counted my one AAHL injury for informational purposes.  Even so, take the number down by 1.  14 becomes 13... and still 11 injuries that are 5+ days.  It still seems like a lot.  And that AAHL player I mentioned is currently in my starting line-up.

I'm sure this is happening to other teams as well - I've noticed quite a few around the league.  My intention isn't to bitch about injuries - I should have been more clear.  The initial point made by koekefix was that injuries seem much more common in the new release.  I only have 2 years experience with it, but last year I only had 5 injuries all year (maybe 6 or 7, tops, I didn't count), so I can only assume that injuries happen more often now.

  13. OK - I totally take back everything I previously said about injuries. :D   Koekefix is right about injuries being out of control.  I can see 5-10 injuries a year, but I am on injury #14 (11 of which being 5+ days) with a little over a quarter of the season to go.  Also to note that I have not played HARD in a few weeks and haven't played DIRTY at all this year.  My training has all been reduced to Easy/Medium, but that hasn't helped...

On the topic of injuries though - my best player was injured for 9 games right before the playoffs last year.  The other team was not playing hard or dirty.  I feel like it's just part of the game.  Yeah, it sucks, but it happens.  If anything, it challenges you to get creative with your lineup - and it makes you think about resting star players during pre-season games or near the end of the season depending upon where you are in the standings.

I have three 5+ game injuries at the moment - and 5 total injuries on the year (in the first quarter of the season).  I think I had 5 injuries all of last year.  I'm really only into my 2nd full year so I don't know what the norm is.  Either way, it has forced me to get creative with my lineup - and that's part of the fun of a manager game.

My injuries so far this year (positions are what they were playing in that game):

    Around Day 10:  1st line F, out 1 game

    Day 7:    3rd line F, out 5 games

    Day 10:  2nd pair D, out 5 games

    Day 17:  3rd line C, out 5 games

    Day 18:  3rd pair D, out 8 games

    Day 19:  3rd line C, out 6 games

    Day 32:  1st pair D, out 1 game

    Day 32:  2nd paid D, out 5 games

  14. I totally get your point of view.  I don't think it should be "easy" for managers to build a perfect team either, and feel that managers should have to do some work before finding a perfect player.  I think there has to be a happy medium.

A few things just to preface:

      1.  I'm not trying to be argumentative - just wanted to add some additional thoughts/perspective below.

      2.  I have only played in a BHL league, so most of my thoughts are formulated based on that.  If things are different once you get to SHL/GHL, then maybe it's not a good idea to make things "easier" as you have suggested.  I truly don't know.

skills/stats are well documented and every team should easily be able to quickly find a player that fits their skill requirements. But personality traits are different; you don't know what a guy is like until you meet him, and the current method of having to click on players to see their traits is a decent alternative to interviewing a guy as I doubt most people would like to actually converse with every player to find out what they are like.

Is that really true for free agents, though?  Once a player is in the league (and I'm referencing the NHL here), you have a good idea if they are cocky or arrogant (Ego), how they play (Dirty), if they are a Leader or not - and later in their career if they are a Big Games player.  Even to a certain extent their Ambition.  If an NHL GM is looking for a Tough player, he already knows which players are tough and which are not.  A good example is the Penguins signing Hornqvist a few years ago.  Why would you interview the Sedin twins if you're looking for a tough grinder?

As rookies, sure, you don't know much about players... but as the game is set up now, you can't filter prospects, you have to click through each one individually for the draft.  This makes sense to me.  Having to do this with free agents does not.

Plus with all the media attention these days, there's so much information on every single player it's insane.  And as managers, we are only one person.  Professional teams have assistant coaches, other assistants, multiple scouts, etc.  The information is readily available.

Another argument is the fact that everybody would try and pick up role-model-type players.

Yes, but that is probably what most managers try to do now.  Having a search filter to help you out doesn't change this tactic, it only makes it less time consuming.  Sometimes you need to make a judgement call between a better player skill-wise, or a less skilled player with better traits.  Personally, I'd take the skill.

You mentioned earlier in another comment that there would be a bunch of good players excluded simple due to having a bad trait, but does that really matter?

Yes, because filtering out a certain trait could potentially filter out a player that could fit your team perfectly, all because he has 1 bad trait.  In a way, it would make the manager have to perform multiple searches, rather than one, and be just as time consuming.  You have to be smart about it.  I see the trait filter working when you know EXACTLY what kind of player you want, otherwise, you wouldn't be maximizing your results.

Also, what would be the point of even having traits in this game if every manager just signed perfect players? Mentalities would just become a moot feature of this game.

Again, I don't think building the perfect team is as easy as it sounds (maybe it's easier in GHL?).  I only have 2 players on my team that have ALL blue/green traits.  3 if you count a prospect that hasn't played a game yet.  Often times, when you are deciding between a few players, you have to make judgement calls over which red/orange traits you can accept and which blue/green traits are more important for your team.  And sometimes even when you find that perfect player, there's a chance that things won't work with salary... cap management still comes into play.  There's still a lot of moving parts.

    .....

Next year I am going to be looking for a grinder who plays tough to fill out a 4th line, and assuming I don't promote, I'll be up against the cap.  I spent a good 1/2 hour today looking at free agents alone (had a break in between meetings at work :)).  Filtered based on a certain Spirit rating and made sure a few other ratings didn't go below a certain amount, click on player 1, he's not tough PASS, click on player 2, he's tough but nervous PASS, click on player 3, he's tough and has good other traits, but his endurance is a 47 PASS, click on player 4, he's perfect in every way, click on contract, he wants 100K more than I can spend PASS, repeat x30...

    .....

I don't think adding an extra search filter for traits will change anyone's strategy, it would just save time.  Everyone already tries to acquire players with good traits.  It would just be an option for managers who know exactly what type of player they want and don't want to click through 20-30 players to find it.  I would assume most of us have jobs and some of us families.  Saving a few minutes here and there isn't a bad thing.

  15. I don't like the idea of searching for personality traits. I look at it like this, I'm searching for players based upon their skill/stats I have no idea what their personality is going to be like. The stats are given data that's collected, personality traits, not so much. When I then click on a player to view his traits, it's like I am giving him a small interview to find out what his personality is like and then can decide if he fits in my teams culture. I enjoy games where everything is not just searchable and people have to do a little work, I think personality is something that doesn't belong in that searchable category.

Good points.  But what about managers who are only searching for a specific type of player.  If you want a Herioc guy like a Justin Williams... or you need a tough/agitator for a Grinder/Energy line.  Maybe it's an either/or search function.  You can either search on ratings or search on traits.  That way, you still need to do your research, but the option is there if you want it.

  16. Has anyone figured out their teams ideal team focus? I've been tinkering with it every game to see if I can get an assistants report better than:

    • The current team focus in today's game seemed to weakened team momentum

No matter how I change it I always get that. I've gone with both an offensive and defensive approach, I've taken into consideration how my team has performed under certain team focuses and tried to tailor it to that, but havent had any positive results.

    ncik

No.  I have tried almost every combination of team focus and I get this comment after every single game.  The only thing I haven't tried is going Super Defensive when I am down by 3 goals (Claude Julien style)... or Super Offensive when I'm up by 3 goals.

  17. @canucks I see what you're getting at. And I agree that the information we get on players could be more vague - and maybe scouting staff etc. could then make that information more accurate. But for all the factual information we have on a player, (which is pretty much everything right now, and perhaps that shouldn't be the case), there should be a search function, as acquiring that data is possible manually and only requires time.

I've gone back and forth on this and have come to agree with this point of view.

The traits data is already available, it's just a matter of time clicking through every player to find it.  Perhaps a happy medium is to only allow managers to select 1 specific trait to a search instead of being able to filter out all the traits you don't like?  For example, you can limit your search to Friendly/Respectful/Role Model players only, instead of being able to filter out every trait you don't want.  If you want Compassionate/Respectful/Role Models, you have to do another search.  But if that is not possible and it's one way or the other, I'd much rather be able to filter on traits to save time.  You'll still need to sift through the candidates to find the combination of ratings you like.

Also, being able to select traits has it's advantages - but it also has it's disadvantages as your search could potentially exclude a really good player just because you were looking for different traits.  A good example is my defenseman KANTARIK.  He's an  Arrogant , Agitator,  Childish , Anxious and Lazy.  He also improves 2-3 ratings per year, doesn't ask for too much $$ given his rating, and plays very well.

I also like the height/weight filter for the same reasons.  I can do without league level and classification as you can already determine that information by their ratings.

  18. Btw, Paul - are the GHL towns and cities unique in US/Canada? Because I know that some names are quite often, for example Springfield is in many states (and TV series :D).

Good question.  Some of them are unique.  For most of them, even when there are multiple cities with the same name, it is clear which city is being referenced.  There were 3-4 that I was unsure of, so I took the city with the largest population.

  19. This map is awesome!  Although I'm a little biased since I'm a Geography major. :)

And yes, Deferiet is a tiny...and I mean *tiny*...town in Upstate New York, not far from the Thousand Islands and the Canadian Border.

Judging by your NY knowledge and Eichel jersey, I'm guessing you are from that area and a Sabres fan?  I'm from Boston so I got to see Eichel play in college at BU a few times.  Kid is an absolute stud!!  Can't help but root for him, despite being a Bruins fan...

  20. OK, I have flicked that little angel off my shoulder.  Two more offers for this player today.  I need to try and snag this guy before someone else does and it's too late!  That and I took an unexpected loss today at home, which caused some anxiety and panic in the locker room.

I feel my offer is very fair.  It is very lopsided toward the CPU, at least according to my overpaid and very opinionated assistant.  If I promote (currently in 1st by a few points) I think the CPU team gets the better of this deal since it involves picks.  If I don't, then I probably do.  But the idea is to promote, so...

Quick question though - for those still reading - how do CPU trades work in terms of order?  Are they decided upon in order (ex. the CPU will accept the first trade if it's good enough, even if the 2nd trade offer is better)?  Or are the offers actually valued and prioritized regardless of when they were submitted?

  21. Awesome work, thanks! But I'm not sure that some managers even know, where their town is. West Chicago is easy, but some looks like they have been picked up only by name :) But very nice map anyway.

I would be great to see also a map of counties from where the managers are.

Yes, this is purely based on the team's selected city, not where the actual manager is located.  That's what got me thinking about it - I had no idea where Deferiet was.  Turns out it is in NY.  I figured I'd do the GHL first since most managers remain with their teams and the city isn't changed too often.  With all the managers on holiday in BHL, who will probably get fired soon, it would have to be updated multiple times per season.  Maybe I'll just keep the GHL updated year over year... that will give me some incentive to promote!
