My friends and I used to get together to play Sierra's Football Pro games (miss those friends, honestly). I still like playing them but I'm also wondering if there are similar games that are more, for lack of a better term, modern. Granted, everything these days is Madden type stuff but what about Sim type games?
  2. 2 points
I'm sure many of the people on here are like me. There's old games that I love and they're here. That means many of the people rating the games have most likely played them before. The fact that they have fond memories of them are going to skew the ratings.

I've been looking for this as well - unfortunately, Sierra Online had exactly the type of sim I enjoyed, and it went out of business in '99.... Imagine all the fun of FPS games but with a Windows 11, modern skin. I'd buy it.

Let me start.. I thought this would be an interesting thread to start here at GM Games. I am really curious to know about how you found out about playing these types of games. We've had several blog entries from our feature contributors telling us their story about how they got started playing sim sports. History: I don't consider myself someone with a great memory lol but here is how I think it all got started and how it evolved. For a long time I have always been fascinated with the statistics in sports. Being a fan, playing sports my whole life, I was always interested in box scores. My grandparents would always have a daily paper and I would grab the sports section and be really interested in reading the box scores that tell a little bit of a story of how the game went. From then on I knew stats and sports, athlete performance had a lasting effect on me. But it evolved further to wondering why teams won, why teams lost, and understand the aspects of a manager or franchise. I think it all started on NES. I owned a copy of Baseball Simulator and my friends in the neighbourhood and I just played the crap out of Baseball Stars. I think my mom at one point had a 40 dollar late charge with Blockbuster on a copy of Baseball Stars being a few weeks late. Man did I ever love that game from the team building perspective, money, salary caps etc. Later on Baseball Simulator was pretty fun, but I think I ended up playing Baseball Simulator 1.000 on SNES more, minus the dumbass magic part of that game lol. Baseball was my sport growing up but I loved all sports and my background being Lithuanian, I have been bred to love Basketball. Along the journey at blockbuster I rented my first copy of Tecmo Super Bowl. I would play out full seasons with my friend during sleepovers and we would almost get a whole season done from early afternoon till about 3-4 am. Losing in the playoffs with eyes barely open was an empty feeling when it was all over, lol! But was simulating it ever fun as well. Stats were realistic, player personnel moves had significance etc. Loved this game. I found some joy in basketball from copies of NCAA Basketball (which didn't simulate well but played well), and played a lot of Tecmo Super NBA Basketball. Tons of fun and loved my mid-range jumpers from the elbows (which normally was a low percentage shot) but loved seeing Michael Jordan hitting those while growing up. From a hockey perspective my first simulation game was Wayne Gretzky Hockey, which I believe was way ahead of its time. As time progressed Baseball Mogul showed up on the scene. It instantly was a hit to me, it took what I wanted these games to become to the level where it made me feel wrapped up in this world. I helped run a league named BMIL that lasted for years until we switched to OOTP .. I have been a user on the OOTP forums since 2002 and I have an interesting private message with Markus from 2002 that makes me smile to this day. As the modern games came out I pretty much played about everything. Countless hours of Championship Manager (CM) even though I wasn't a huge European Football / Soccer fan but the game was just THAT good. Eastside Hockey Manager was developing and the games got more sophisticated. I still firmly believe this genre made some of the most addictive games ever made. If you really believe and are intrigued with a great simulator algorithm and AI world, these games will keep you playing through all hours of the night. "Just sim one more day".. Hey, share with us your story. I would love to hear it personally. I helped create this site so these games, the developers get the attention they deserve, but also, we get a chance to mold the games with the dev's in our desired fantasy world's. What's your story??

How I started.. Playing Sports Sims

I bought my first baseball sim game long before computer sims were available. In junior high, I started with Program IV Baseball then progressed to Sherco (I really enjoyed the unique gameboard). Later, I played the C& D version of Statis Pro for a few years but then off to college when I left baseball sims behind for a while. I later came back when I needed a hobby, first using SSI's Baseball Strategy, then Micro League and finally Earl Weaver before I saw that APBA had come out for the PC. Tried that for a few years but have preferred Strato in recent years. Have tried several but enjoy trying new sims and comparing them.

As a fan of sports management simulation games, I have always been fascinated by the challenge of rebuilding struggling franchises and turning them into dynasties. Whether it's taking over a struggling hockey team in Ultimate Hockey GM or reviving a football franchise in CT Football Manager, the thrill of turning a team's fortunes around is truly rewarding.

    On Paper Sports Football '24

Hey everyone, I am a huge "manager" game enthusiast and have been spending a lot of my free time recently working on this football GM mobile game called "On Paper Sports Football '24", its a football gm/manager game. You're trying to build your team from the ground up via free agency, trades, the draft, hiring coaches, researching new plays, training players etc. You can simulate a near infinite number of seasons & each play of every game is actually simulated out in the engine. I am trying to find the sweet spot between super in depth-simulator but also somewhat casual & easy to pick up and play Wanted to share it here to see if anyone was interested & also see if I can get some feedback to gauge what I should add/improve. I have a lot of stuff I want to add so hopefully getting some feedback will help me figure out the priorities. The game is available now on iOS & Android Here are some links if you interested in checking it out: App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/on-paper-sports-football-24/id6451453470 Google Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cbanfiel.OnPaperSportsFootball24 Thanks!

I stumbled across this site while looking for something similar to Front Page Sports FB Pro. I was pleased to see that there are so many people interested in that old game. I have never found any other FB game that I liked as much.

I used to play FBPro all the time. Unfortunately, I have never found another FB game I enjoyed as much. I would create my own leagues. I even had my own stats program that I developed that would read in exports from FBPro stats.

Part 1: BREAKING NEWS- NCAA leadership replaced in "coup" attempt ************************ "The NCAA is dead! Long live NCAA 2.0! The NCAA is dead! Long live NCAA 2.0" In a bizarre scene far beyond the imaginations of most sports college fans, it was announced on the steps of NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis this morning that a coup had occurred in the ranks of college athletics leadership. The prior president has apparently been deposed and forced from his position, and a low-level NCAA employee named J.J. Moore had ascended to the presidency. Moore and his acolytes apparently waited until most of the NCAA leadership was out of the building at the national championship game and just....took over operations. While details are scant, the takeover was apparently so comprehensive that the current NCAA administration has already admitted defeat, and been taken in exile to a secret location. Throngs of college football fans welcomed the news, and a spontaneous crowd descended upon Indy and gathered at the entrance to the administration building for the NCAA. Little is known about Moore at this point, other than that he is a midwestern football fan who had apparently been working for some time to infiltrate NCAA offices. He apparenly has full support of a strong majority of NCAA employees and is expected to put out a statement in the near future explaining his vision for the new NCAA, which is being termed "NCAA2" by the throngs of fans gathering outside. Many collegiate coaches and athletic directors were taken aback by the news, and none were immediately available for comment due to the unusual nature of the situation. Many were furiously working to reach contacts at NCAA offices, but outside communication from the NCAA appears to have been temporarily disabled. When reached for comment, a spokesman for the U.S.Congress simply snorted and stated "Nope, the NCAA is on its own this time. They've head more than enough time to figure this one out" before walking away with a smile on his face. The FBI and local law enforcement groups are also declining comment. More details on this story are expected to emerge in the coming days. ******************************************************************** *Standard disclaimer* This is CLEARLY a work of fiction. The stories you are reading are being crafted using the seminal college football sim Bowl Bound College Football and the overactive imagination of one midwestern college football fan. Any resemblance to real-life events is purely coincidental. Any depictions of forceful restructuring of the NCAA should not be used as a guide for actual real-world actions. Because, let's face it, the real world of college football is going to continue to do anything it can to money-grab while it transforms into a very different version of what it once was, and there's nothing you or any of us can do about it. And let's face it, we're still probably going to watch anyway. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Yes I used to play seasons of FBPro98 as well. I had a league made up of the best historical players for each franchise. was a lot of fun. When a friend would visit from Pennsylvania we would have the Colts and Jets face off with Unitas and Namath as the QB's. I still have the leagues on a Flash drive.

But again..those are user votes. That's not the site deciding the score, that's people (me, you, average forum user) voting for that score. Do I believe those are high? Yes. Would I rate most the games as high as they are? No. But You can't dictate what users rate games at, unless you turn off all user ratings.
  19. 1 point

I cannot take this site seriously

To be fair, most those aren't reviews. Those are user ratings scores. It's much easier to just click a rating then to actually put that rating into words. I'd guess that skews the ratings higher. Most games don't appear to have reviews on this site. But the site is nice for documenting what all games are out there. Then I normally go to Steam|YouTube|MetaCritic and google to see reviews for the game. I prefer to find sites with more then just one persons thoughts on the game.

How I started.. Playing Sports Sims

I started playing GM games in the mid to late eighties. I got my first computer at nine which was a Spectrum +3. With it came a floppy disk with a game called Soccer Boss. You took charge of a club in either Division 2, 3 or 4 and had to win promotion to Division 1 (Now the premier league). Me and best best friend spent hours on this game unable to win promotion to the top division, no matter what we did we always seemed to start the season really well and then loss a lot of game at the end to miss out on promotion. Then by some grace of god I managed to finish 3rd in the league and was promoted. The next two seasons we won Division 1 as easy as pie and won two FA Cups...Great times and it started me down the road of manager games.

    Mac running Windows games

Hey there! I feel you – playing games across different platforms can be a bit tricky sometimes. It's awesome that you found a way to run Windows games on your Mac. I did something similar a while back, and it's been a game-changer (literally!). By the way, have you considered getting a cheap Windows key? It's a great way to make sure you're all set up properly without breaking the bank.

I cannot take this site seriously

I think it is great this site exists for the genre of GM/management style sports games, but until the reviews get to be serious I can't take this site seriously. Almost every score is a 9 or better and it is impossible to sort through which games are actually better than others. The reviews need to be honest and objective, and they are NOT. Until they are, I just can't take any of the published reviews here seriously.
