Oakland lost their starting QB Tim Couch to a leg injury early in the 3rd quarter and despite the efforts of backup QB Akili Smith, their offense really could not generate much yardage (244 total yards) against a tough Denver defense. Denver CB Corey Chavous was the defensive star of the game allowing only 1 catch out of 9 total targets whole deflecting 5 passes away from Oakland receivers. I have not seen many defensive backs have that level of success against the passing game in this league. 6. Tampa Bay Bandits 10 0 3 11 3 -- 27 Chicago Blitz 7 0 3 14 0 -- 24 First Quarter Chicago - Chambers 7 pass from King (Edinger kick), 5:40 Tampa Bay - Janikowski 35 FG, 9:06 Tampa Bay - Smith 1 run (Janikowski kick), 11:04 Second Quarter No scoring Third Quarter Tampa Bay - Janikowski 22 FG, 7:15 Chicago - Edinger 49 FG, 13:58 Fourth Quarter Tampa Bay - Janikowski 44 FG, 7:20 Chicago - Edwards 1 run (Edinger kick), 11:08 Chicago - Edwards 36 run (Edinger kick), 13:59 Tampa Bay - Jurevicius 9 pass from Bulger (Taylor pass from Bulger), 14:47 Overtime Tampa Bay - Janikowski 28 FG, 14:52 This was a very interesting game, with Tampa Bay kicking a last second field goal in overtime to secure the win. Chicago ran all over the Tampa Bay defense (240 yards), yet Tampa Bay's pass rush harassed Chicago QBs all game long (5 sacks and numerous pressures). The game pretty came down to the turnover battle (Chicago turned over the ball 4 times to 2 times for Tampa Bay). Additionally, Chicago's QBs were pretty bad offsetting the dominance of the running game. Tampa Bay's Offense was outstanding as usual, but the Tampa Bay run defense has been hamstringing this team all season long. 60% of all running plays against this defense are successful (carries gain at least 40% of needed yardage for a first down on 1st down, 60% on 2nd down and 100% on 3rd or 4th down). This is far and away the worst run defense in the league (league average is 46.3%). Hopefully, they can improve, because this offense is championship-ready. The Chicago blitz have the exact opposite issue; great defense trying to cover for awful quarterback play. Although New Jersey K Mike Vanderjagt was excellent going 5/6 (51yd miss) in field goals, Boston K Jeff Hall's 43yd field goal with 3:11 left in the game decided the game. New Jersey's defense held Boston's offense to only 191 total yards, but untimely turnovers in the 4th quarter, including one returned for a TD, doomed the efforts to pull the game out. What Los Angeles did not do was hit three FGs (misses from 51, 51 and 50), costing themselves 9 points and also costing themselves the game. They did have a 21-16 lead with 3:57 left in the 4th quarter when Denver engineered a 15 play 76yd drive that ended with a game winning TD. Arizona was cruising along in the 1st half, but 3 crushing QB Donovan McNabb interceptions in the 2nd half pretty much decided the game. Arizona held the ball for 35 minutes, converted 10/17 3rd downs and outgained Birmingham 349 yards to 316 yard, but those untimely turnovers proved decisive. Looks like the wheels are falling off the Tampa Bay Bandit's season. Despite stellar games from their offensive stars(QB Marc Bulger, WR Randy Moss and WR Plaxico Burress were sensation), overcoming 3 total turnovers, 2 of which are returned for scores as well as bad run defense proved too much for the Bandits. Oakland ran all over the Tampa Bay defense and and their opportunistic in returning two fumbles for scores. Michigan converted on third down almost at will (12/15) forcing Philadelphia's putrid defense to stay on the field and get worn down to exhaustion. Michigan QB Aaron Brooks dual threat capabilities were on full display. Great offensive effort for Michigan. As for Philadelphia, their defense is horrible and I would not be surprised if they don't win a game this year. They only have 2 high level players (DT Casey Hampton and DT Shaun Rogers) on that side of the ball and the results show every game. On the season, Chicago Blitz QBs have been sacked 25 times in 6 games. Until the Blitz offensive line can protect their quarterback, the struggles will continue for them. The New Jersey generals finished with an 4-8 record last season. Their offensive personnel is pretty much the same from last season. And on defense, there were three changes made to that side of the ball; S Deon Grant was signed away from the Philadelphia Stars and LB Bart Scott and DE James Harrison were drafted in the 2002 2KFL draft. Those 3 deft moves have transformed the New Jersey Defense and powered this team to a 5-1 record at the league's halfway mark of the season. Amazing turn around and I suspect this team is going to be tough to deal with down the stretch. Washington QB Matt Hasselbeck was accurate while extending drives and averaging 10.2 yards per pass attempt (as opposed to Boston QB Daunte Culpepper averaging 5.7 yards per pass attempt). Michigan's defense has struggled to stop the run all year (55% of rushes against this defense are successful) and the Arizona offense took advantage of this time and time again. Defensively, the free agent Arizona signed away from Chicago DE Marques Douglas, finally broke out with his best game of the year. As for Michigan, once QB Aaron Brooks got injured and was out of the game (Sprained ankle), the offense folded, leaving their defense on the field for long stretches trying to stop the potent Arizona running game to no avail. Arizona had kind of been a surprise team this year (after finishing 5-7 last season), so if QB Donovan McNabb can continue his MVP-level play (completing 63% of his passes with 10 TDs and 1 interception), this team should be a playoff team.
