  1. Oakland Invaders 3 14 0 0 -- 17 Denver Gold 7 7 7 14 -- 35 First Quarter Oakland - Feely 27 FG, 7:08 Denver - Bennett 9 pass from Griese (Brown kick), 11:43 Second Quarter Oakland - Betts 7 pass from Couch (Feely kick), 1:47 Oakland - Ritchie 84 punt return (Feely kick), 5:13 Denver - Faulk 29 pass from Griese (Brown kick), 12:26 Third Quarter Denver - Faulk 14 run (Brown kick), 11:48 Fourth Quarter Denver - Faulk 12 run (Brown kick), 5:35 Denver - Cartwright 1 run (Brown kick), 8:40 Though Oakland was able to keep the game close in the first half, the Denver Gold was able to dominate the 2nd half on their way to victory. Denver outgained Oakland 456-236 in total yards, was 7/12 on 3rd down (Arizona 2/10) and averaged almost 6 yards per carry. Denver HB Kevin Faulk led the way with 3 total touchdowns (2 run, 1 pass) on offense while the Denver Gold defense sacked Oakland QB Tim Couch 5 times and harassed him in the pocket all game. The Oakland defense was able to sack Denver QB Brian Griese 6 times, but it wasn't enough to gain control of the game. 2. Los Angeles Express 14 3 3 7 -- 27 Arizona Wranglers 0 10 8 15 -- 33 First Quarter Los Angeles - Bennett 8 run (Rackers kick), 5:50 Los Angeles - Northcutt 55 pass from Batch (Rackers kick), 7:54 Second Quarter Arizona - McAllister 1 run (Gramatica kick), 0:50 Arizona - Gramatica 24 FG, 9:01 Los Angeles - Rackers 28 FG, 14:42 Third Quarter Los Angeles - Rackers 41 FG, 10:08 Arizona - McCants 38 pass from McNabb (Thomas run), 14:57 Fourth Quarter Los Angeles - Westbrook 1 run (Rackers kick), 0:42 Arizona - McCants 31 pass from McNabb (Curry pass from McNabb), 2:32 Arizona - McCants 48 pass from McNabb (Gramatica kick), 12:40 With 14:30 left in the 4th quarter, Los Angeles goes ahead of Arizona 27-18. Arizona, behind QB Donovan McNabb and WR Darnerian McCants, score 15 unanswered points to win the game. The story of the game, was time of possession and 3rd down conversion (Arizona held the ball for 36:08 minutes, Los Angeles for 23:52; Arizona was 7/16 on 3rd down and Los Angeles was 2/12). The Los Angeles defense could not get off of the field and that cost them the game. Arizona QB McNabb and WR McCants dominated this game. 2nd year WR McCants big game really came out of no where and shows that the work he put in during the off season paid off greatly. Arizona's big free agent signing, former Chicago Blitz DE Marques Douglas, was unstoppable and was consistently in the Los Angeles backfield. Los Angeles defense tried hard to keep the lead, but losing CB Chris McAlister in the second play in the game was tough to overcome and allowed the Arizona passing game to go off. Tampa Bay QB Marc Bulger takes the snap and fires a pass down the middle of the field directly to Michigan CB David Macklin for the interception. This was the beginning of the end as Michigan was able to drive and set up for the game winning 51yd FG by K Rian Lindell with :39 left in the game...which is good. Big upset by the Panthers and it seems Tampa Bay is still reeling from last year's crushing playoff loss. Michigan's big free agent signing, WR Peerless Price had a heck of a debut game and is exactly the type of receiver Michigan did not have last year. Tampa Bay was unable to get their big 4 players (Bulger, HB Fred Taylor, WR Randy Moss, WR Plaxico Burress) going offensively which ensured their game long struggle after scoring 21 1st quarter points. New Jersey ran for a 2KFL record 363 yards and 8.2 yards per carry. The Philadelphia front 7 were no match for the rebuilt interior line featuring mainstay C Jeff Saturday and newcomers free agent G Kelvin Garmon and rookie G Jonathan Goodwin. New Jersey HB Amos Zereoue had the best game of his career and is headed for a huge season if the run blocking stays consistent. Philadelphia could not really establish their running game and their passing attack was not very effective against the New Jersey Defense led by free agent pickup S Deon Grant and rookie LB Bart Scott. 7. Pre-Season House Keeping 1. WR Patrick Johnson, who was with Arizona last year, was suspended last year for 1 year during week 6 in 2001 due to a substance abuse violation. He signed with the Denver Gold, but won't be available until week 6 this year 2. No other players had legal issues during the offseason. 3. No teams changed Quarterbacks during the offseason; the quarterback classes during the last two drafts have not developed very much 4. I predict Washington and Tampa Bay will play for the title this year
  8. Free Agency is complete and here are some big name players that went to new teams . How I run Free Agency is in two phases. First phase is each free agent (Players hit free agency in their 4th, 8th and 12th years in the league) has a percentage chance of staying with their current team based on that teams winning percentage. For starters, the formula is .75 times team winning percentage. For backups, it is .25 times team winning percentage. So for instance, a starter for the Washington Federals (12 wins out of 14 total games or .857 winning %), would have a 64% of keeping their starters and a 21% chance of keeping their backups. On the other end of the spectrum, the New Jersey Generals (.285 winning percentage) would only have a 21% chance to keep their starters and a 7% chance to keep their backups. Simply put, players want to stay on better teams and leave worse teams. And backups want to be starters, so they will go for those opportunities on other teams. The franchise tag is available for teams twice in consecutive years. Once the players have decided if they are staying or leaving their teams, I then take each teams winning percentage, square it, multiply that by 100. So for instance, the Washington Federals has a 73% chance of signing any free agents they want and the New Jersey Generals only has a 8% chance of signing any free agent they want. I then assess team needs and off we go with free agency. I pick the top free agent (based on criteria I have set) and roll 2 10 sided dice for Washington, the team with the highest free agency percentage. Roll is 73 or below, Washington has signed him. 73 and above, Washington doesn't then I go to the next team that has a need at that player's position. So the below are some of the major free agents that switched teams: All Pro G Alan Faneca leaves Chicago for Tampa Bay All Pro DT Brian Young leaves Arizona for Washington WR Peerless Price leaves Arizona for Michigan G Mike Wahle leaves New Jersey for Arizona WR Travis Taylor leaves Los Angeles for Chicago WR Dennis Northcutt leaves Philadelphia for Los Angeles DE Brandon Whiting leaves Washington for Michigan (He was a back up for Washington and a starter for Michigan) CB Fakir Brown leaves Tampa Bay for Michigan WR Donald Hayes leaves Birmingham for New Jersey (Another backup leaves for a starting job) S Deon Grant leaves Philadelphia for New Jersey C Hank Fraley leaves Birmingham for Oakland (Another backup leaves for a starting job) HB Thomas Jones leaves Arizona for Philadelphia (Another backup leaves for a starting job) CB Tebucky Jones leaves Chicago for Washington (Another backup leaves for a starting job) Washington is going to be strong again. They signed some studs in free agency.
  9. In this league, we run the draft before Free Agency. We just ran the 2002 2KFL Draft (3 rounds) and the results are below: Round 1 Birmingham Stallions WR Deion Branch Boston Breakers S Roy Williams New Jersey Generals LB Bart Scott Chicago Blitz S Ryan Clark Philadelphia Stars CB Sheldon Brown Arizona Wranglers LB Larry Foote Michigan Panthers G Andre Gurode Oakland Invaders WR Jabbar Gaffney Los Angeles Express HB Clinton Portis Tampa Bay Bandits T Bryant McKinnie Denver Gold DE Julius Peppers Washington Federals G Kyle Kosier Round 2 Birmingham Stallions S Ed Reed Boston Breakers S Chris Hope New Jersey Generals G Jonathan Goodwin Chicago Blitz CB Quentin Jammer Philadelphia Stars CB Lito Sheppard Arizona Wranglers T Chester Pitts Michigan Panthers G Brandon Moore Oakland Invaders DE Dwight Freeney Los Angeles Express WR Javon Walker Tampa Bay Bandits HB Chester Taylor Denver Gold C Justin Hartwig Washington Federals LB Scott Fajita Round 3 Birmingham Stallions LB Will Witherspoon Boston Breakers DT John Henderson New Jersey Generals DE James Harrison Chicago Blitz QB David Gerrard Philadelphia Stars LB David Thornton Arizona Wranglers DT Larry Tripplett Michigan Panthers CB Phillip Buchanon Oakland Invaders HB Ladell Betts Los Angeles Express G Eric Heitmann Tampa Bay Bandits CB Brian Williams Denver Gold G Kendall Simmons Washington Federals QB Joey Harrington
  10. We had (37) players retire but only two were notable: Denver LB Adalius Thomas retires after 12 years. This is a big loss for the Denver Gold as he was a All-Pro last year and their best defensive player. He is going to be hard to replace. Oakland WR Jerome Pathon retires after 11 years. He was their best wide receiver the past couple of years and a very steady performer on the field.

Washington dominated the time of possession 35:47 to 24:13, giving Denver little chance to sustain drives and score. Washington HB Edgerrin James was the best player on the field and is awarded the 2KFL Bowl MVP. Congratulations to the Washington Federals! 12. When a team gives up (3) Kickoff return TDs plus a Fumble return TD, huge upsets are bound to happen. Tampa Bay outgained Denver on offense 444 yard to 303 yards. Tampa Bay dominated the time of possession 32:14 to 27:46. But none of that matters as their Special Teams totally failed this team at the worst possible time. What a terrible way for the season to end for Tampa Bay. They went through the regular season like a buzzsaw but none of that matters now. Its going to be a long offseason for them. Kudos to Denver for the huge upset and a trip to the Championship game. 13. With :13 left in the 3rd Quarter, Michigan, leading 31-21, lined up for a 48 yard FG with a chance to go up 34-21 going into the 4th Quarter. They missed the field goal. Washington then proceeded to score 2 TDs to go ahead 36-31. With 2:18 left in the game, Michigan gets the ball at their oen 42 yd line. 14 plays and 50 yards later (using their timeouts and multiple ball spikes) Is able to get the ball to Washington's 9yd line with 30 seconds left and the down is 3rd and Goal. 2 shots to get the game winning TD and move on to the 2KFL Bowl and the championship. Michigan QB Aaron Brooks throws in triple coverage in the end zone to WR Dane Looker; pass incomplete That was a terrible play by QB Aaron Brooks but he wasn't helped by the play call. There were 2 TEs and a HB in blocking and only two receivers against 8 people in coverage. The play was doomed. So now we head to 4th down and the ball game. Michigan QB Aaron Brooks misses a wide open WR Dante Hall up the seam; throws it to a double covered WR Dane Looker instead Words can not describe how wide open WR Dante Hall was in the end zone. Who knew that a blown 2pt conversion in the 3rd quarter by New Jersey would lead to their demise? Had they have gone for a regular XP, Philadelphia would have needed to win; the game likely would have gone to OT. New Jersey was better on offense this game with 477 yards of offense (Philadelphia gained 312 yards), but could not get their defense off of the field for the final 11 play 72 yard game winning drive by Philadelphia to secure a victory.
