  1. Chicago Blitz 7 6 0 0 -- 13 Washington Federals 0 10 7 9 -- 26 First Quarter Chicago - Beasley 17 run (Edinger kick), 7:46 Second Quarter Washington - McGuire 21 FG, 1:07 Chicago - Edinger 40 FG, 6:27 Washington - Johnson 16 run (McGuire kick), 10:51 Chicago - Edinger 27 FG, 14:32 Third Quarter Washington - Johnson 1 run (McGuire kick), 11:59 Fourth Quarter Washington - Bradford 8 pass from Hasselbeck (McGuire kick), 3:15 Washington - Safety (Garrard tackled in endzone by Spikes), 13:31 Chicago was doing well in the 1st half and even had a 13-10 lead at halftime. The 2nd half was a different story as 3 turnovers in 3 2nd half possessions doomed them. Washington 2nd year HB Rudi Johnson got his first 2KFL start of his career for the injured HB Edgerrin James and the Washington offense did not miss a beat. Defensively, Washington LB Takeo Spikes had a magnificent game and was making plays all over the field even forcing a fumble. For Chicago, rookie QB David Garrard, in his 2nd start, was up and down. He was more accurate with his passes, but and interception and a fumble were critical plays that hurt the Chicago offense. Chicago HB Jamal Lewis was a handful for the Washington defense, but to no avail. This time their offensive line struggled mightily, allowing QB Marc Bulger to be battered to the tune of 8 sacks and 6 additional hits. The poor guy was under duress all game, hampering the Tampa Bay offense ability to sustain drives despite outgaining the New Jersey offense 325 to 242 yards. Arizona dominated the 2nd half behind the hard running of HB Deuce McAllister. Defensively, rookie LB Larry Foote was all over the field making clutch plays. Good win for Arizona. Chicago rookie QB David Garrard in his first 2KFL start was very underwhelming as to be expected. You could tell that the game was moving too fast for him as evidenced by his bad completion rate. Hopefully, he will settle in and things will slow down for him moving forward while leaning on HB Jamal Lewis, who was a freight train today. Oakland QB Tim Couch was magnificent today, HB Reuben Droughns gained 181 total yards while on defense, S Mike Brown was all over the field today. The story of the game was Tampa's secondary. Out of 38 total Birmingham pass attempts, the Tampa secondary only allowed 7 total 1st downs or TDs (6 first downs and 1 touchdown). That comes out to 18.4%, which is the lowest I have seen in 3 seasons of this league. Birmingham QB Peyton Manning was terrible and truth be told, he has not been good at all since the inception of this league despite being the highest rated QB in this game. I suspect going to a more run heavy offensive profile will benefit this team as their Offensive line blocks succesfully 60% of all rush attempts. Time to make a change. This play has most likely ruined Washington's season as on the way down in the tackle, James sticks out his left arm to brace himself and shatters the bones in his arm, hand and wrist ending his season and most likely Washington's defense of their 2KFL Bowl title defense. He is the straw that stirs the drink for the Washington offense and his injury deflated this team, allowing New Jersey to come into Washington and pull off the big upset. This injury will now define the Washington Federal's season and I am not sure they can overcome it. New Jersey played efficient football on offense with no turnovers. On defense, they intercepted the ball twice and behind stud rookie LB Bart Scott, the New Jersey defense shut down the less potent Washington running game, which is the best in the league with HB Edgerrin James. Boston's inability to convert 3rd downs (2/11) and to stop the run (surrendered 279 yard rushing). The only reason why Boston was able keep the game close was due to 2 late turnovers by Michigan. New Jersey lost this game for one reason; the inability of the interior of their offensive lines (C Jeff Saturday, rookie Johnathan Goodwin and G Kelvin Garmon) to block Arizona DT Kris Jenkins. He wreaked havoc necessitating double and triple teams which opened up other pass rushers to pressure New Jersey QB Chad Pennington. The New Jersey quarterback was sacked 5 times and pressured/hit numerous other times, forced into throwing 2 interceptions and DT Kris Jenkins was the main cause of this pass rushing onslaught. Despite Arizona losing QB Donovan McNabb (minor ankle injury) and their top pass catcher WR Todd Pinkston (broken hand), with the help of a ferocious defense, backup QB Billy Volek was able to do just enough, with the helpful running of HB Deuce McAllister, to engineer 3 scoring drives in the 2nd half to secure the win. The Oakland trio of QB Tim Couch, HB Reuben Droughns and rookie WR Jabar Gaffney played magnificently to lead the Oakland offensive attack. On defense, backup S Matt Bowen had a big pick-6 as well another interception and LB Anthony Simmons had 2 sacks as well. Los Angeles lack of a consistent rushing attack as well as untimely turnovers did them in. Los Angeles WR Mike Furrey was dominant in a losing effort. The story of the game was the Birmingham rushing attack (186 yards) which allowed Birmingham to possess the ball for close to 38 minutes. Michigan's offense was a dumpster fire gaining only 174 total yards due to a stiff Birmingham defense. Michigan WR Peerless Price is proving to be the best free agent signing in the early 2002 season. He has been a revelation so far. Boston then proceeds to score 50(!!!) unanswered points, destroying the Chicago Blitz at home. Boston QB Daunte Culpepper and HB Ladainian Tomlinson were fantastic and took advantage of the opportunities given to them by the shoddy Chicago defense. Though Boston gained 592 total yards on offense (Chicago gained 274), this game was decided by the Boston defense. Boston, led by rookie S Roy Williams and the entire Boston defensive line (DE Jevon Kearse, DE Patrick Kearney, rookie DT John Henderson and DT Damione Lewis) sacked Chicago QB Shaun King 9 times and hit him 6 additional times (which is an extraordinary number for FBPro98). Additionally, the Boston secondary got 2 interceptions to compound the Chicago QB's bad day. Chicago QB Shaun King has played terribly for over 2 seasons now, so I am making a change. From here on out, rookie QB David Garrard will be the new Chicago Blitz QB. Hopefully, a better signal caller will help stabilize a struggling offense. Additionally, a QB change should supercharge the production of stud WR Donald Driver. The Washington run game, behind HB Edgerrin James and 3rd string backup HB Rudi Johnson (who happens to be very fast in this iteration of my league), broke off several long runs, which allowed Washington to gain 261 yards on the ground and allowed the play action game to flourish, despite QB Matt Hasselbeck throwing 2 interceptions. Philadelphia's failure to establish a consistent rushing attack was ultimately the teams undoing, despite QB Tom Brady having a good game and keeping the Stars in the game. On defense, Washington's big free agent signing in the secondary, CB Tebucky Jones was incredible on pass defense with a sack and 4 pass deflections. Philadelphia's rookie CB Sheldon Brown was awesome with 2 interceptions and stepped up huge when Philadelphia lost their star DE Adewale Ogunleye for the year with a torn ACL in the 4th quarter. Huge loss for the Stars defense. Los Angeles rookie HB Clinton Portis was the lynchpin of the Los Angeles offense and his success set up the play action passing game allowing an efficient QB Charlie Batch to pick the Michigan defense apart. On defense Los Angeles LB Keith Bulluck played a complete all around game with 2 tackles for losses, 3 run stops (tackles that results in run plays not being successful based on specific criteria) and 3 passes deflected. For Michigan, although QB Aaron Brooks played very well, he could not make up for an anemic rushing offense and a lethargic defense. Washington QB Matt Hasselbeck was magical in the passing game and HB Edgerrin James battering ram in the running game and also had an excellent game in the passing game. Oakland QB Tim Couch had a great game, but could not compensate for a leaky Oakland defense. Oakland WR Torrey Holt and Jabar Gaffney had great games as well. I won't highlight any defensive players as very little defense was played by either team. Having lost, at home, to a mediocre Michigan team last week, the Tampa Bay Bandits were determined to get things back on track and boy did they do it. They were a buzzsaw on the gridiron today. Tampa Bay HB Fred Taylor was unstoppable today and WR Randy Moss shows how dangerous he is with the ball in his hands with a receiving TD and a kickoff return TD. On on defense, S Adrian WIlson had his best game as a pro with two interceptions. For Philadelphia, QB Tom Brady struggled with the turnovers and about the only Philadelphia player that came to play was 2nd year play WR Santana Moss. New Jersey Generals 7 14 5 7 -- 33 Birmingham Stallions 2 7 7 9 -- 25 First Quarter New Jersey - Hayes 53 pass from Pennington (Vanderjagt kick), 3:42 Birmingham - Safety (Henry tackled in endzone by Greenwood), 9:04 Second Quarter Birmingham - Williams 1 run (Dawson kick), 7:09 New Jersey - Zereoue 1 run (Vanderjagt kick), 9:02 New Jersey - Hayes 6 pass from Pennington (Vanderjagt kick), 14:06 Third Quarter New Jersey - Safety (Weaver tackled in endzone by McKenzie), 1:53 New Jersey - Vanderjagt 21 FG, 7:05 Birmingham - Branch 100 kickoff return (Dawson kick), 7:28 Fourth Quarter Birmingham - Dawson 31 FG, 8:21 Birmingham - Dayne 24 pass from Manning (2-Point conversion failed), 10:59 New Jersey - Zereoue 1 run (Vanderjagt kick), 13:52 The New Jersey Generals and their much improved running game were the story of this weird game. The game was weird because of 2 safeties, 13 combined sacks, kickoff return touchdown, a failed 2pt conversion that would have given Birmingham a late lead and an 8 play, 73 yard game winning drive late in the 4th quarter where New Jersey HB Amos Zereoue gained 72 of those 73 yards on the ground, breaking the backs of the Birmingham defense.
