Wendel Clark got a reaction from ColoKrabatt in Picks switching between promoting and demoting teams
This has been in my mind for a while now. Good that Peekaboo now brought it up, so I have to do the same as well. The way I see it, stopping pick switching would solve/help with many problems while creating very little, if any.

First, the downside, if it even can be called that: the reward of promotion would come one season later. As the system is now, when you promote (and have your picks left), they turn very valuable and usually usable right away and helping in that next level you just reached (and are even highest overall picks in GHL). If those picks would not switch, when you promote (and have your picks left), those picks would come at the later end of the level you are about to leave, making them much less useful.

But then to the upsides, that also make that one downside very questionable or at least very much outweighs it in my opinion. I think it's quite safe to say that the current system's weaknesses culminate into one thing: the huge value change of picks in case of promotion/relegation.

Huge value change on relegation: It is already very hard to keep your place in the new league level after promotion. Or if for some other reason (like a re-building) you think you are in risk of relegation, it is a big stress factor in itself. In addition to that, you now fear your future picks will lose a lot of their value (even "crumble into dust" if I am allowed to exaggerate a bit here), and you will have to decide whether you just submit to this, or will try to trade them for something (probably for a discount since others will understand your tough situation as well).

Huge value change on promotion: This is even bigger problem because of how this is abused and in all likelihood will be even more so in the future. If you keep your picks and promote, fantastic and I don't have anything against it. But there are other issues about this. Like Peekaboo already wrote, it is "super abusable". It's easy to trade for these picks away from higher league level. And if (probably not if but when, as the worlds before this reset showed) this becomes more and more common practice, it will be very bad for the game, even ruin it for many. It comes down to "if everyone else is doing it" factor. I'll use SHL/GHL as an example, but I think the principles are the same for every league level. If you play in SHL and want to promote, it is tempting to offer your picks to GHL team to get players that would otherwise be harder or even impossible to get. You would get an advantage. Then if someone else would do this, but you wouldn't, you would be in a disadvantage. From GHL perspective: top picks are very valuable, and very hard to get, and the promotion SHL picks have the highest odds of becoming the most valuable picks in the world. So it is obvious anyone in their right mind would want them. But how to get them in the current system is very vulnerable and let's say it as it is: abusable. And then what applies to SHL, applies to GHL: if others do it, you have to do it too, or be in a disadvantage. So it can easily become "racehorse betting" that no one really likes but are half-forced to do anyway: offering scrape (for GHL-level) players to SHL teams they think or hope to promote and it becomes a race of who bets the right team and who gets accepted first. I personally hate it, and I know I'm not the only one. Probably most of us do.

Upside then for stopping the pick switches: the value of picks would be predictable. That is core reason that leads to other (all?) upsides.

If you promote to GHL (other levels as well, this is just my example), it is already tough enough to stay up. Even if you would relegate, you would know your pick to be great. If you opt to keep it, you will have a strong future asset almost certainly. If you opt to trade it, its great value is obvious to everyone, and the one wanting it would need to give really valuable price for it.

If you are promoting (to any level), you know your current picks are not too valuable, but the real reward comes later. You can also trade them, they still have value at least to the level you are currently playing and soon leaving behind.

Most importantly this change would reduce the very questionable and abusive practices from becoming more and more common and hurtful for the entire game and making the game fairer for everyone. Secondly, it would hugely help the teams that are in the risk of relegation (after promotion or for other reasons) since they would know that their picks would keep their high value.

So I would say this subject and post would better belong to suggestions category really. Stop pick switching! Or at least consider the ups and downs very carefully.

Gratz to bouncer and West Chicago Hawks. Game 5 and series win 3-2 for them. Nothing miraculous about losing to Hawks but the series was a bit of a weird one and I can't but be a bit of annoyed about the very ending.

    Series breakdown:
    Shots:
    WES 169
    ENI 138

This number shows edge on Hawks. They won shots in 3 games and the rest of the 2 were tied.

    Power play:
    WES 5/29
    ENI 4/10

These numbers tell several tales and there I also see one factor to my demise. I scored all my 4 PPG during one 5-minute major, and went 0/9 after that. Hawks on the other hand had me taking too many penalties and I was playing half of the games 3 and 5 in the penalty box. Both teams also scored one shorty.

    Individual games:

    Game 1:
Dream start for Rage, 4 power play goals during one penalty. Pettigrew didn't know what hit him and Hawks never recovered. 0-5 and series 0-1 for Rage.

    Game 2:
Gibazov is injured and is replaced by Lantaigne in the first line. Line gets butchered with -4 alongside -3 by 1st defense pair. 5-2 Hawks and series tied 1-1.

    Game 3:
Penalties ruin the game for Rage. Spineless effort from them. Shutout for Pettigrew and showdown for Hawks powerplay. 3-0 Hawks and they take the series lead 2-1.

    Game 4:
Hawks powerplay continues strong, but Rage wins this one due to even strength domination. 4-3 Rage and series tied 2-2.

    Game 5:
Penalties again troubling Rage, who take first 6 penalties of the game but still manage 2-0 lead but Hawks quickly make it 2-2. The downfall of Rage comes in the third, with a total meltdown, losing shots 17-4 and allowing 4 goals, two of them by an unexpected hero Ventura, who only had 4 goals in the entire regular season. Rage is beaten and Hawks advance to 3-2 series win with 6-2 game 5.

For Rage the series started like dream and ended like a nightmare. But in conclusion, the better team won. I took way too many penalties and Hawks depth players stepped up (Journeau 25 points in the regular season, 7 in this series). Regular season was 2 wins each (one of mine overtime) and this one went to game 5 so I managed to fight as the underdog in the playoffs too. And game 4 win was by strong even strength effort, so I was not only one-powerplay-wonder in this series.

Season over. Now a breather and focusing on next season. Good luck to all the remaining teams.

Steve, I also thought I improved my team through trades. Last 5 games with 0 points, last 8 games with 7 points. Sinking down fast. Expected "top improvement" player 1 assists and -6 in those 8 games.

About the roles. Littleb's answer was about the role bars. Not sure if the orinal question was about them or the actual role that the player is set. You can set the role from your team page's "action" menu, under "player roles". But the role bars in player page show some indication as to what role(s) are generally suitable for each player.

OK, it's that time of season again.  Time for the 2nd Annual Tarnished Silver Biscuit Plate!  For those who missed last season's extravaganza, the best way to describe this tournament is, think GHL GOLD CUP... but better!  Or here is a link to last seasons tourney:  http://forums.gmgames.org/topic/9682-inaugural-tarnished-silver-biscuit-plate-pres-15/

The round robin tournament is between 4 prestigious SHL teams, who at one time in their history auto-promoted from BHL.

    1) Minnedosa Musketeers.  They need no introduction.  They were the winner of last year's Tarnished Silver Biscuit Plate and the only one of these teams to make the SHL playoffs.  They were tired of always finishing 2nd best to the Leopards and went into S15 with a chip on their shoulder.  A literal chip because all they do is aggressively shove food into their faces.  They are known as being the biggest, baddest and fattest team in all of Biscuit.

To get a glimpse of their greatness in action, here is a link to their preseason training video:

Last seasons result:  3-0-0-0, 15 GF, 8 GA

    2) Tullahoma Tomcats.  I would say they need no introduction, but they do it themselves anyways.  A team that exceeded all expectations last season, but it still was not good enough for Coach Wendel.  Anything short of a 60-win season catapults him into a rage of fury.

The below clip was taken after a S15 win in which the Tomcats only won by 1 goal (start video at 0:45):

Last seasons result:  1-1-0-1, 8 GF, 8 GA

    3)  Pittsboro Plastic Attack.  The SHL newcomers certainly held their own last season and avoided relegation by a large margin.  Known league-wide for patience with player development and building an empire via draft picks.  Coach Naekfor is meticulous when it comes to building a team.  Everyone who has ever tried to pry a draft pick off his hands has received the same response:

Last seasons result:  0-1-1-1, 8 GF, 10 GA

    4)  Deferiet Leopards.  A disappointing season for the Leopards that was foreshadowed by a disappointing preseason tournament.  The Leopards missed the playoffs by a single point for the first time since taking over the franchise.  While most teams dwell on the golf course, that just isn't their style.  Instead, these hard rockers threw a killer party complete with fine women, booze and blow and partied their faces off.

The full party was recorded here in this completely NOT SAFE FOR WORK OR CHILDREN video:

Last seasons result:  who cares, what's it to you anyways?

Season 16 schedule (Home teams on left):
Day 4 - Leopards vs. Plastic ... Musketeers vs. Tomcats
Day 5 - Tomcats vs. Leopards ... Plastic vs. Musketeers
Day 6 - Leopards vs. Musketeers ... Plastic vs. Tomcats

I don't know if this topic has been brought up or discussed before, but the logic behind affiliate games faceoffs might need to be reconsidered? I think centers would need to have higher priority than they do now. It looks like they have some priority, but even 1 or 2 point higher overall wingers and even defenders do seem to take more faceoffs than for example second highest center with even highest faceoff skill.

Examples from last season from my Dangles AAHL team:
Winger French, higher overall than Clear, faceoff skill 40: 363 faceoffs in 57 games.
Defender Blackmore, higher overall than Clear, faceoff skill 40: 86 faceoffs in 61 games.
Center Clear, lower overall, still slightly more icetime than French, faceoff skill 76: 61 faceoffs in 62 games.

So, winger taking over 6 faceoffs per game without skill, center not taking even 1 with skill, and even defender taking more. Centers seem to develop some faceoff skill even without taking or taking very little faceoffs, but isn't it so that the amount of faceoffs taken is a big factor considering how well they develop in that skill? And winger faceoffs seem to be a waste considering development: French has taken over 700 affiliate game faceoffs and his faceoff skill is still flatline 40.

Normally I'd give it to the player from the winning team, but given the format of 1 player per team, I went with Kivinen, who I felt dominated in his two starts.  I may be slightly biased as he pitched a 40-save shutout against me and stole the game.  Who knows what would have happened if he started that 3rd game (not sure if it would have helped or hurt his cause).

Camarillo is a very close 2nd.  6 points in 3 games is amazing.  He probably would have got my vote if there were some goals mixed in there.

I love that my nominee had 1 point and was a -1.     The 6/4/5 stats are what I like to see, though!  Hopefully those intangibles will start to translate into results.  Go Leopards!

Congrats to the Minnedosa Musketeers for winning it all.  This is like Boston's college hockey version of the Beanpot.

Time for an MVP vote.... details below and will see if I can figure this poll thing out at the start of the thread!

The candidate from each team is.....

    Titus Germain (F)- Pittsboro - 1+1 for 2 points and a +1, 4 shots, 2 hits and average match rating of 82

Lennart Kivinen (G) - Tullahoma - 2 games played for a 1.00 GAA saving 82 of 84 shots on goal in 2 wins.  0.976 GAA and 84.5 rating.

    Mael Pell (D) - Deferiet - 1+0 for 1 point and a -1.  5 shots, 6 hits, 4 blocks and 5 takeaways!  Match rating of 77.6

    Edmond Camarillo (F) - 0+6 for 6 points and a +7.  7 shots, 4 hits, 4 blocks, 1 takeaway.  Match rating of 81.6

Thanks guys   This was fun to do and hope you didn't mind my poor writing skill on the post game stuff.

Considering doing some stuff during the season for fun too, will see how time goes.

Also a huge thanks to the guys in here Naekfor, Paul and Wendel!  Made it a bit more exciting having a mini round robin with you guys like this!  Hopefully can do it again!

Post game for the Minnedosa Musketeers 6-3 road victory over the Tullahoma Tomcats.

The arena is electric and loud as the boos ring down for the Musketeers and the cheers and shrieks for the Tomcats as they enter the ice.  The fans are fully behind coach Wendel, some signs reading Double Promotion and some woman in the front row holding up “I want to have your love child coach Wendel!”  He could be seen glancing at the woman and looking for exits if a quick escape was needed.  This is it, the finalé of all.  The prestigious Tarnished Silver Biscuit Plate was on display awaiting the winner of this game!  Will it be Tullahoma, the upstart home side playing their game controlling the puck and aggressively trying to win it back or the Musketeers gritty hard hitting and borderline dirty forcheck with their pushy greasy attack in front of goal?

It only took a minute and for the second time in these games Minnedosa struck first on the first shot, if you could call it a shot.  Hudspeth won the faceoff in the neutral zone and Calce passed it back to Compos who threw it in the zone from neutral ice.   The puck took a funny bounce and hopped over the stick of Naud in goal for a quick 1-0 lead.  Tomcats looked flat footed after that and needed something to pick them up.  Near the end of the period Luka Macri starts pushing Derick Hudspeth around in neutral territory and they drop the gloves.  It didn’t end well for Hudspeth though as he didn’t even get a punch in while Macri dropped him after multiple hits.  It was a merciful when they lost their balance and the refs could break it up.  The fans were in it again and the team was pumped up!  Paulhus gets in and has the puck handed to him behind the net.  He throws it out for Dicare who slips it across to Roch who levels it with an easy tap in.  Tie game going into the break!

The second started harsh, Minnedosa picking up 2 majors and 2 minor penalties from the 1:30 to the 10:30 mark with over 3 minutes of 5 on 3 hockey.  Coach Little could be seen screaming at the referees clearly feeling that they were a bit one sided.  Luckily Brennan Slade and Maurice Overall took charge, blocking 2 shots early on and the whole PK unit only allowed 3 shots… and generated 4 of their own!  Then as the penalty ended they used the even strength to take the lead again!  Sonke Heyde, rumoured to be on the market this season for the right price comes up with a brace bringing it in from the sideboards and making a little move to beat Naud far post.  2-1 and the agony didn’t stop there because before the end of the period Aymeric Lopes, the big Powerforward known for defending makes a good tip on a Taushev shot from the point and makes it 3-1 before the break.

Within seconds of the third Compos wins the puck with some fine checking from Thiago Roch and sends it into the zone.  Camarillo sends it around the boards to Fiala who fakes a shot and sends it over to Compos pinching in from the point for a 1 time blast that hits iron but sneaks in somehow.  4-1 now and could that lead be too insurmountable?  5 minutes later the response from Perttu Lappi who goes on the attack carrying the puck into the zone and finding Hutka in the slot.  He wrists one over the glove of Sprogis to bring them back to within 2.  Minnedosa would go on to get 2 more goals to lead 6-2 before Dicare, a free agent signing in the off season made a good move receiving a pass from the neutral zone and throwing it on goal from the circle clipping off of Sprogis glove and dribbling in the net.  It wasn’t much consolation though as that is how the game ended 6-3 for Minnedosa winning the Plate!

Once again, Minnedosa dominated this game in the faceoff dot (68.4%) and had the lions share of possession which helped with the victory.  They however had 7 giveaways to go with Tomcats 6 takeaways and were fortunate more of those didn’t turn into goals the other way!  Tomcats allowed 39 shots this game again which is their lowest total of the tournament but this time it cost them.  Who knows what would have happened if they didn’t rest Kivinen for the season… Could he have altered the game and stole another one?  No one will know now!

As it was presented to captain the supporters began chanting… “ this is so fixed…. OHHHH OHHHHHH this is so fixed!” and a chorus of boos to follow as Captain Alan Taushev shakes the hands and takes the plate.  Suddenly there are screams from the players….. Where are the biscuits?!?!?!?!   Was it all for not?  As they look at the dirty looking plate they realize they can use it as a mirror to make sure the between period snacks are out of their teeth and begin to finally get excited.

Post game for Pittsboro Plastic Attack’s 4-3 Shootout win over Deferiet Leopards.

A game between two teams playing for pride having not won in either of their previous games.  They will both be looking to turn it around and get momentum going for the start of the season.  Tonight the 3 million dollar man will get a rest, making way for Andreas Zhutov who played well in relief of Stulreiter in the first game when he got the hook late in the 2nd period.  In the other goal Tikhomirov will get his 2nd start looking to improve upon last match letting 4 past him.

Kovar wins the opening facoff to Izidor Hocevar and immediately fires a long pass which is way off the mark and goes for an icing right away.  The ensuing faceoff earns action right away as Leopard centerman Dmitry Sayansky wins the draw straight to Braden Forest who rockets on hard and low but Sakovich gets in position to lay down and block it.  It goes straight to Nathanial Washam though and he forces Tikhomirov to make a good blocker save pushing the puck deep into the corner.  It wasn’t until the 17th minute that we have our breakthrough!  Mulvihill forces a pad save from Tikhomirov who nicely pushes it wide.  Lehtonen digs it out of the scrum for Leopards but Lehoullier comes in and knocks him over clean and hard beginning the transition.  He banks it off the boards to Denys who plays it into the far corner for a racing Chaim Hottin who reaches it first and gets set.  He spots Lehtonen cheating in on the far wing and makes no mistake with the pass through the slot for him to knock home.  1-0 for the home team.  Could another upset be in the cards?

Leopards would need to get some momentum going and they do right away to start the 2nd.  Cycling the puck in the offensive end Yan Yurevich spots Pell at the high circle who drives a one timer at the net finding the top corner and drawing level.  It wouldn’t stop there though as less than 2 minutes later they strike again!  A puck battle in the corner to the right of Tikhomirov ends with a big hit on Niko Goddard from Ardit Kohler who won the puck back to Redman and he plays it far point to Hocevar who carries the puck around one skater and throws it on net through a screen going in between the legs of Tikhomirov before he got in the butterfly.  They will have another look before they announce it to see if Homes who was screening got the stick on it but it appeared to be in clean and the goal goes to Hocevar.  The domination of that period did not stop there as they doubled their lead only 7 minutes in, Homes wins a big faceoff in the offensive zone and Redman cuts across the middle with it and drops it to the side of the net for Kohler who puts it up high short side from a tough angle.  Tikhmirov bangs his stick on the post as the Leopards celebrate a big goal which could be a decisive goal… or would it?

Near the end of the period, Hottin takes a weak shot which Zhutov sends to the corner.  In the scrum Washam comes in for a hit but gets the elbow infront and the referee puts his arm up immediately!  On the powerplay Kovar wins the faceoff sloppily but the Leopards can’t quite get it out as Giguere picks the puck off before it goes out and throws it to the net where Leopold Sahlberg gets his stick on it and it drops below the glove of Zhutov.  3-2 and back in the game!  That wasn’t all though!  In the final minute of the period Hottin wins the puck in the neutral zone and finds Jemal Giguerre through the middle.  He makes no mistake on the clean break lifting it over his blocker and brings Pittsboro level again!

Third period it appeared the referees had a conference and came out blowing the whistle lots… but it was all one way.  For 10 minutes the Leopards tirelessly killed off 4 penalties including 1 major for a questionable call where Stewart nudged Kovar on the back without even knocking him down.  They were even short 2 men for 1 minute but still managed to hold Pittsboro at bay.  They even managed to outshoot them in the 3rd period and forced an overtime.  In overtime it appeared both teams wanted a shootout.  There wasn’t 1 stoppage in the whole of the 5 minutes of overtime and only one shot managed mind you Waller forced an excellent save of Tikhomirov which could have easily been the end of it.

The leopards were up first and Waller missed the net on his first shot.  Germain was up first for Pittsboro and moving in from the left deked once and quickly tucked it through the pads of Zhutov for the early lead.  Thomas Mcglashan draws level on the next shot with a cute move on Tikhomirov hanging him out to dry and slipping it in backhand along the ice into an open net.  Pittsboro’s 2nd shot, which would end up being the winner;  came of the stick of Donald Hammons who feigned a move to the backhand then lifted the puck over the pads and under the blocker.  Zhutov got a piece but it wasn’t enough.  The game ends there and Pittsboro Plastic Attack wraps up 3rd position beating the highly favored Leopards in a Shootout.  The fans threw what looks like Hysteria albums on the ice singing “Love Bites” as they left the arena disappointed wondering what was to become of their team who were in the SHL playoffs last season.  Only time will tell!

Leopards dominated  in shots 42-31 and will be disappointed they couldn’t turn their 53% possession or 71.8% faceoffs into just one more goal!  Plastic Attack will have to be pleased their ninja skills worked, it was the 2nd game they stayed out of the box completely just proving I was right about their art of concealment!  There was very few turnovers all game, both playing conservative not wanting to have a turnover cause goals.  On to the grand final between the Musketeers and the Tomcats!
