Career Game #274

Start of Season

Nov 14, 2008: Washington (0-0) @ Marist (0-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, some freedom, princeton
  • Defense: 2-3, presses half of the game
  • Key Players: Jr SF Angelo Chavis 12.2 ppg last season
  • Notes:

1st Half

A new-look team for us.  Only PG Brent Green remains as the only starter from our back-to-back title-winning teams.  But we're playing the same style of game, forcing a lot of turnovers on our opponents, and getting easy baskets

Halftime: Up 46-26

Key stat(s)

  • TOs: WASH 2, MAR 10
  • 3PT: WASH 6-19, MAR 3-6

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Michael Davis 12 pts, 3 rebs, 4 3s

2nd Half

Lots of 3s in the 2nd half.  MAR never had a good run, and we remained in control until the end of the game

Final Score: Washington - 83, Marist - 68

Box Scores

Waldon 27, 4, 1, 4 3s
Davis 26, 7, 0, 2 stls, 8 3s (*)

Rebs: +3

Asts: +5

TOs: -10

Pts in paint: +8

2nd chance: +9

Fast break: +7

Post game observations

  • (+): The 3pt shots were the highlights of the game, but not to be overlooked was teh fact that we didn't allow a single 2nd chance point to MAR
  • (-): It's going to be a short rotation, as I will rely mostly on our upperclassmen

  • Defense: 2-3, presses half of the game
  • Key Players: Sr SF Jamal Bayno 16 pts in their last game
  • Notes: Limited NAVY to 38 pts in their 1st game

1st Half

WF kept it close at the start because they were able to minimize their turnovers.  It was only durring the latter part of the 1st half where we started getting steals, and it's no coincidence that we opened up a huge gap during that time

Halftime: Up 39-23

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 48%, WF 28%

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Winston Waldon 16 pts, 4 3s

  • Notes: LSU blowing by their opponents, with an average winning margin of +18

Halftime: Down 37-47

Key stat(s)

  • Fast break: WASH 5, LSU 14
  • 3PT: WASH 7-17, LSU 5-12

Playing much better defense now to get back ourselves in the game

13:32, Tied at 53

PG Chris Simmons, part of the starting lineup in lieu of the injured PG Brent Green, has made back-to-back 3s to give us a 6 pt lead.  We extended our advantage to 8, but LSU has regrouped

LSU continues to hang around.  Our 2nd unit able to hang on to a slim lead, and setup another exciting finish

4:36, Up 71-70

We had a turnover and a missed shot in our last couple of possessions.  LSU scores on a 3pt play opportunity.  Down 2.  We miss another 3.  After an LSU miss, SG WInston Waldon scores on a drive.  Waldon with another big game, 28 pts

  • Defense: 1-3-1, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Fr PF Joel Lytle 12.7 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 2.7 spg
  • Notes: LSU blowing by their opponents, with an average winning margin of +18

1st Half

SYR eating up our interior defense and getting lots of pts inside.  Our turnovers also were an issue; plenty of fast break opportunities for SYR, exposing weakness on our transition defense.  Down by as many as 10, but we scored the last 7 pts of the 1st half to still make this a close game

Halftime: Down 29-32

Key stat(s)

  • Fast break: WASH 8, SYR 14

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Winston Waldon 10 pts, 2 3s

2nd Half

Our defense starting to show signs of life at the start of the 2nd half, and we even toook a 1 pt lead.  However, C Courtney Whaley picked up his 4th foul. and has to sit.  Without Whaley to take care of the boards, SYR pounced on the offensive glass getting a lot of 2nd chance opportunities.  Our deficit starting to grow.

9:18, Down 43-55

We made a token rally, getting to as close as 9, after being down by 18.  But SYR was steady towards the end

Scouting Report

  • Defense: m2m, presses half of the time
  • Key Players: Sr SF Marlon Andrews 11.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg
  • Notes: XAV averaging just 55 ppg in their 1st 2 games

1st Half

SG Winston Waldon was on fire the entire 1st half.  Which was good because it helped cushion some of the bad things we did like not boxing out on defensive rebounds

Halftime: Up 34-19

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: WASH 7-15, XAV 1-9

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Winston Waldon 26pts, 6 3s

2nd Half

Our deficiencies on the glass has allowed XAV to get closer.  Outside shootinghas kept us in this game

10:57, Up 47-36

9 pts seems to be the deficit barrier that XAV can't break; whenever they get that close, we answer with a clutch basket

5:58, Up 58-57

Another 3pt shot by SG Winston Waldon put us up by 20 with 2 mins left.  Lead was safe, and we slowed down.  SF Michael Davis provided scoring support in the 2nd half, relieving some of the pressure on Waldon

Final Score: Washington - 71, Xavier - 56

Career Game #281

Dec 1, 2008: #17 Washington (6-1) @ Cincinnati (0-5)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, princeton
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr PG Dwayne White 11.2 ppg, 3.4 apg
  • Notes: Scoring has been a problem for CINCY; 53.0 ppg (4th lowest Nat'l), 35.6% FG (2nd lowest)

1st Half

Its either CINCY has suddenly become a potent offensive team, or our defense just stinks today.  Regardless, we must do something to reduce the high shooting percentage that CINCY displayed in the 1st half

Halftime: Up 39-37

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 47%, CINCY 57
  • TOs: WASH 8, CINCY 11

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Michael Davis 12 pts, 2 3s
  • CINCY: SG Darius Craig 12 pts, 2 3s

2nd Half

PG Chris Simmons' turnovers have slowed whatever small momentum we were trying to build.  CINCY still shooting over 50% FG

11:27, Up 53-49

CINCY has not let us get away here in the 2nd half.  Both teams in the penalty

4:05, Up 65-62

Career Game #282

Dec 5, 2008: #16 Washington (6-2) @ Drake (1-5)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: slow pace, balanced, triangle
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr SG Glenn Perkins 22.8 ppg, 41% 3PT
  • Notes: Rest of starting unit averages almost the same total as Perkins

1st Half

Defense began to improve at the latter part of the 1st half, but still not satisfactory if we want to make sure we win this game.  DRAKA'e 6 missed FTs part of the reason why we're still ahead

Halftime: Up 36-30

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: WASH 5-14, DRAKE 3-9
  • TOs: WASH 5, DRAKE 10

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Michael Davis 12 pts, 5 rebs, 3 3s
  • DRAKE: SG Glenn Perkins 8 pts, 4 rebs, 3 blks

2nd Half

Scoring and pace has gone up a notch, which suits us more.  SG Winston Waldon and SF Michael Davis scoring 21 of our 25 pts in the 2nd half

10:56, Up 61-51

We were able to get good contributions also from the other players, to increase our gap further.  More importantly, we have taken away DRAKE's SG Glenn Perkins, scoring just 3 pts in the 2nd half.  A great bounce back win, coming off a close loss in our last game

Dec 12, 2008: #16 Virginia (7-2) @ #22 Washington (7-2)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, shuffle
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Jr PF Doc Kendrick 12.0 ppg, 5.8 rpg
  • Notes: A good, balanced offensive team with 6 players averaging at least 9 ppg.  They also don't turn the over much, at just 12.1 topg

1st Half

Exciting fast action in the 1st half, producing not only quick baskets, but also turnovers for both teams (12 each).  Good to see our big men getting more involved on offense; PF Joey Petty and C Courtney Whaley combined for 16 pts

Halftime: Up 41-35

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 52%, VA 45%
  • Paint: WASH 20, VA 10

2nd Half

VA lapsing into more turnovers because of our defense.

11:00, Up 57-41

Fantastic 2nd half defense, limiting a good offensive team to just 20 pts.  It shows we have that capability to be a lock down defensive team; we just need to be consistent on every game

  • Notes: Smith is one of the best all-around players in the country

1st Half

PEPP's PG Jeff Smith has either scored or assisted on all of their made FGs, but those baskets were just few (10).  On the other hand, we were making our outside shots, and also able to run the break

  • PEPP: PG Jeff Smith 10 pts, 8 rebs, 8 asts

2nd Half

PEP threatened but never broke the double digit deficit barrier.  One key to the game was to force PEPP's Jeff Smith more  as a shooter, rather than a facilitator.  Smith had only 1 ast in the 2nd half; he shot 5-21 FG in the game.  Smith's final stats are still impressive, 20 pts, 9 rebs, 9 asts

Careerarrow-10x10.png Game #292

Jan 19, 2009: #16 Washington (16-2, 7-0) @ Arizona (7-9, 3-4)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, princeton
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Jr SG Doug Whitworth 22.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 41% 3PT
  • Notes: Not very consistent at home with a 6-5 record

1st Half

Our offense was out of synch because of our turnovers, and we can't get our running game going.  Nevertheless, we were leading most of the way, but ARIZ coming backarrow-10x10.png when their outside shots began to fall

Halftime: Up 33-32

Key stat(s)

  • TOs: WASH 8, ARIZ 7
  • Fast break: WASH 6, ARIZ 6

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Michael Davis 14 pts, 5 rebs

2nd Half

Early foul trouble with us, including SG Winston Waldon picking up his 4th.  But it somehow became a blessing a disguise.  In came PG Chris Simmons, and playingarrow-10x10.png with a 2 PG lineup, the pace of the game went faster

10:58, Up 60-49

Our 2nd unit has definitely stepped up, as our starters languished in the bench due to foul trouble.  PG Tim Jones, playing for the 1st timearrow-10x10.png in this game, has scored 7 pts in 5 mins.

6:31, Up 69-55

ARIZ still in striking distance as they continue to score from the FT linearrow-10x10.png.  Our lead was 9 with 2 mins remaining.  We managed to chip away plenty of time on our next 2 possessions, but failed to add to our score

0:44, Up 75-68

ARIZ couldn't connect on their next 4 shots from beyond the arc, and we held on for the winarrow-10x10.png.  Always tough to finish on top in this place, but we managed to do it despite a poor shooting game for SG Winston Waldon

Final Score: Washington - 75, Arizona - 68
