1st Half

Outside shooting was going well at the beginning, but faded towards the end.  What was once a 14 pt lead has been trimmed to 8.  What we did well was taking away ARIZ's rebounding advantage

  • Key Players: Jr PF Clinton Tahid 14.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg
  • Notes: OR best defensive team in the conference, allowing just 59.6 opp ppg

1st Half

Exciting game with 12 lead changes.  OR shut out our shooters, going 0-6 3PT.  We decided to purely attack the basket.  OR had 10 fouls, while we got called for 14.  OR's PF Clinton Fahid has been unstoppable

2nd Half

We got called for 4 fouls right in the 1st minute of the 2nd half, including the 4th personal on both PG Jeryl Milton and C Lee Martin.  We had the right idea on just taking inside shots, but they simply won't fall; our FG shooting has dropped to 37%

10:37, Down 44-56

Some semblance of outside shooting appeared during the last 2 mins, but it was already a blow out at that point.  We were outscored in the 2nd half, 25-47.  I can't remember a time when none of my players finished in double figures scoring.  OR's PF Clinton Tahid had 28 pts and 12 rebs

Career Game #186

Feb 3, 2006: #21 Washington (19-3, 9-2) @ California (9-11, 4-7)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, some freedom, triangle
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: So SG Dean Barnes 14.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg
  • Notes: In their 5 last defeats, CAL is giving up almost 30 pts in the paint

1st Half

We were right in challenging CAL's interior defense, as majority of our pts came inside the paint.  What I am not happy about is the number of offensive rebounds we have allowed CAL to grab, and that was the main reason why this game remains close despite CAL's poor FG shooting

Halftime: Up 34-30

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 4&%, CAL 27%
  • Rebs: WASH 16, CAL 25

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Ronnie Peppers 9 pts, 3 rebs

2nd Half

Both teams finding their mark from the outside, but committing quite a number of turn overs

11:56, Up 48-40

Both teams i the penalty, but we missed 6 FTs already in this game; those might prove to be crucial.  I am not happy with PG Jeryl Milton's 6 turn overs

7:02. Up 53-51

CAL has been shooting much better here in the 2nd half, has tied up the game earlier with a 3.  SG Louvon Davey answered back with a 3 also.  CAL committed a turnover prior to the last media timeout

2:46, Up 63-60

PG Louvon Davey got a good screen for his jumper but he missed.  CAL with another turn over.  SF Chris Farrell attacks the lane and scored!  Up 5.  We get a steal.  But we threw away another pass.  Oh my.  CAL scores plus a  foul.  They missed the bonus FT.  Timeout

0:48, Up 65-62

We're going for a 2-for-1.  Quick shot by SG Louvon Davey.  Missed.  Bad decision my part.  Timeout CAL

0:36, Up 65-62

CAL goes for a quick 2.  Missed.  But they get the offensive rebound.  C Lee Martin picked up his 5th foul.  2 FTs for CAL.  Split.  Timeout

0:27, Up 65-63

CAL fouls quickly.  Freshman PG Brent Green goes to the line for a 1-and-1.  Green succumbed to the pressure, and missed.  CAL rebounds and calls a timeout

0:23, Up 65-63

CAL shoots a jumper.  Missed.  But there was a foul.  I can't believe the call.  CAL makes both.  Timeout

0:15, Tied at 65

CAL was called for a foul (a non shooting foul but they are in the penalty).  This time it was CAL's coach who can't believe what he saw.  PG Jeryl Milton goes for a 1-and-1.  Makes the 1st.  Missed the 2nd.  CAL grabs the board.  They have no timeouts left.  0:07 left.  We played great perimeter defense.  CAL can't put up a shot.  Buzzer sounded.  We escape by the skin of our teeth.  PG Jeryl Milton, who is having a horrible game with 8 turnovers, turned out to be the hero as his last FT turned out to be the winning margin.

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, 5 out

Career Game #190

Feb 17, 2006: #17 Washington (23-3, 13-2) @ Stanford (14-12, 9-6)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, motion
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Fr SG Bryan Jones 13.2 ppg
  • Notes: STAN leads the conference in steals at 7.8 spg

1st Half

Hot outside shooting by STAN gave them a good start, and we trail by as many as 14.  We turned to our pressure defense, and we slowly clawed our way back into the game.  STAN has beaten always on the offensive glass, but that trend was reversed today

Halftime: Up 36-34

Key stat(s)

  • Off Rebs: WASH 10, STAN 4
  • 3PT: WASH 3-10, STAN 5-9

Key Players

  • WASH: PG Jeryl Milton 11 pts

2nd Half

Our relentless ball pressure forcing a lot of turnovers on STAN, and generating easy transition baskets for us

10:38, Up 63-45

STAN tried to shoot their way back, finishing the game with 13 3s.  But they couldn't make enough stops to break our double digit lead barrier.  We made full use of our deeper bench in tiring out STAN

  • Defense: m2m, press at points
  • Key Players: Sr SG Jamal Hayes 11.6 ppg
  • Notes: WASHST playing well lately, winning 3 of their last 4 games

1st Half

Both teams playing good defense resulting in a low-scoring close game.  We were leading 21-15 when we started committing a lot of turnovers, and WASHST made an explosive 21-4 run.  Our home win streak is in serious jeopardy here

Halftime: Down 25-36

Key stat(s)

  • Turnovers: WASH 10, WASHST 6
  • FG: WASH 33%, WASHST 44%

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Louvon Davey 9 pts

2nd Half

We're muscling our way in the paint to try to get back into this game.  We cut our deficit to 2 earlier, but WASHST proving to be no pushover.  We are already in the penalty

10:56, Down 40-46

I am so upset about the calls.  Every time we get close, WASHST being bailed out by our fouls.

5:51, Down 52-55

We have finally taken the lead off a turnover by WASHST.  C Cory Wethers scoring our last 2 FGs

4:10, Up 58-55

A 3 by SG Louvon Lavey extended our current run to 9-0.  Up 6.  WASHST broke their silence with a drive.  Timeout

3:09, Up 61-57

We turned the ball over.  WASHST scores.  Up 2.  We miss.  WASHST with a turnover.  WASHST called for a foul, and they get into penalty.  But SG Louvon Davey missed the froent end of his 1-and-1.  We got called for a foul.  WASHST hits both FTs.  WASHST on a 6-0 run.  Timeout

1:35, Tied at 61

SG Louvon Davey hits a 3!  Davey has come up big today with 18 pts.  Timeout WASHST

0:57, Up 64-61

WASHST answers back with a 3!  Timeout

0:42, Tied at 64

We isolate SF Chris Farrell, he drives, and scores!  Farrell also in double figures with 11.  Timeout WASHST

0:33, Up 66-64

WASHST scores, and there was a foul.  They make the bonus FT.  I call my last timeout

0:18, Down 66-67

SG Louvon Davey drives.  Davey was met by a double team.  Davey made a nice drop pass to SF Chris Farrell.  Farrell puts up a shot.  Farrell can't find the mark!  Rebound by WASHST, and we didn't have enough time to foul and stop the clock.  My 1st home loss here at WASH.  Tough loss

1st Half

We have done a good job so far on UTAH's SG Jamar Birley, limiting him to just 5 pts on 2-12 FG.  Both teams each with 10 turnovers.  I was not pleased with the numerous offensive rebounds we have given up to UTAH

Career Game #194

2006 Pac 12 Tournament Semifinals

Mar 8, 2006: (3) Arizona (19-9, 14-4) vs (2) #16 Washington (26-4, 15-3)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, not many freedom, motion
  • Defense: 2-3, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr SG Jermaine Stephens 14.3 ppg
  • Notes: We won by 35 in our only meeting with ARIZ, in a game where our bench exploded for 51 pts.  Since that loss, ARIZ has won 10 of their next 11 games

1st Half

I don't mind our low shooting percentage, but the 9 turnovers that we committed were significant.  Our defense, especially inside the paint, needs to improve in the 2nd half

Halftime: Down 34-39

Key stat(s)

  • Paint: WASH 14, ARIZ 22
  • Turnovers: WASH 9, ARIZ 5

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Louvon Lavey 11 pts, 3 3s

2nd Half

C Lee Martin picked up his 4th foul early in the 2nd half.  However, C Shamel Anderson and C Cory Wethers have both stepped up, helping us with 12-4 to claim the lead.

15:02, Up 46-43

We then committed 3 consecutive turn overs, which shifted the momentum back to ARIZ, whose shooters are beginning to wax hot

8:55, Down 54-62

Our small 3-guard lineup has carried us back in this game.  The last jumper by PG Brent Green gave us the lead.  SGs Ronnie Peppers and Louvon Davey have combined for 37 pts

5:06, Up 69-68

We wasted a lot of opportunities by adding more 3 turnovers.  I called a timeout to regroup

2:23, Down 69-72

C Shamel Anderson gets a basket plus a foul.  Anderson makes the bonus FT.  Tied.  ARIZ answers back with FG.  Down 2.  We went back to Anderson who got fouled on his attempt.  Anderson splits.  Offensive rebound by C Cory Wethers, but he missed his follow up.  Down 1.  Another basket by ARIZ.  Timeout

1:04, Down 73-76

C Shamel Anderson asking for the ball.  Anderson gets the pass, makes his move inside, makes the shot plus a foul!  Anderson makes the FT.  Anderson has scored our last 7 pts.  Tied once again.  We have to make a stop.  ARIZ missed a 3.  But they the offensive rebound.  They miss the 2nd shot but we got called for a foul.  Split.  Timeout

0:22, Down 76-77

Can't make the entry pass to C Shamel Anderson.  SG Louvon Davey takes a long one.  Missed.  ARIZ rebounds.  We gave up 3 quick fouls to get into penalty.  0:08 left.  ARIZ to take 1-and-1.  Makes both.  Timeout

0:08, Down 76-79

SG Ronnie Peppers got open to shoot a 3.  Travelling!  Oh my.  Game over.  We had a good opportunity to win this game, but our defense didn't show up

Final Score: Arizona - 81, Washington - 76

Post game observations

  • (+): We made 10 3s to help break ARIZ's zone defense
  • (-): Poor defense, plus 18 turnovers.  Worst part is we allowed ARIZ to score 36 pts in the paint, partly because of C Lee Martin's sub par performance

Career Game #195

2006 NCAA Tournament 2nd Round

Mar 17, 2006: (12) Pennsylvania (20-9, 10-4) vs (5) #18 Washington (26-5, 15-3)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, not many freedom, triangle
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr SG Regie Johnson 15.6 ppg, 40% 3PT
  • Notes: A good shooting team, both from deep at 38.4% 3PT, and at the line with 76.2% FT

How they got here

  • Automatic selection (Champs Ivy League)

1st Half

We took advantage of PENN's weak interior defense.  We have also defended the perimeter well.  But PENN has deliberately slowed down the pace of this game, to keep them within reasonable distance

Halftime: Up 39-30

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 54%, PENN 38%

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Louvon Davey 8 pts, 3 asts
  • PENN: C Damian Gray 11 pts, 4 rebs

2nd Half

We surprised PENN with our pressure defense, and we scored 6 pts in the 1st 30 secs of the 2nd half.  We extended our run to 16-0 to suddenly push our lead to 25; all of which happened in a span of less than 4 mins.  PENN never recovered.  A great all-around performance by SG Louvon Davey.

Final Score: Pennsylvania - 61, Washington - 81

Post game observations

  • (+): We had a total of 12 steals, mostly generated by our pressure defense
  • (-): PENN scored 13 2nd chance pts on just 7 offensive rebounds; something we can't afford to give up at later stages of the tournament

Career Game #196

2006 NCAA Tournament 3rd Round

Mar 19, 2006: (5) #18 Washington (27-5, 15-3) vs (4) #23 Virginia (24-7, 12-6)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, motion
  • Defense: m2m, press a lot
  • Key Players: Fr SF Jamal Smith 16.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 45% 3PT
  • Notes: A very good outside shooting team, at 41.4% 3PT (#7 Nat'l)

How they got here

  • Automatic selection (Champs ACC)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Delaware, 67-49 (Smith 19 pts, 4 rebs)

1st Half

VA missed their 1st 5 attempts from 3pt territory, and we raced to an early 21-4 lead.  An excellent defensive performance the entire 1st half, perhaps the best we've had this season.  VA best player, SF Jamal Smith, was held scoreless on 0-6 FG

Halftime: Up 36-13

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 52%, VA 22%

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Louvon Davey 9 pts

2nd Half

The lead we built in the 1st half proved to be enough.  Less minutes for our starters in the 2nd half.  Everybody got a chance to play, including our 2 walk ons, which is partly the reason with the dip in our defense.  We advance to the Sweet 16

Final Score: Washington - 73, Virginia - 49

Box Scores

Team Stats

FG: 47-36%

Rebs: +2

Asts: +2

TOs: -6

Pts in paint: +20

Post game observations

  • (+): We effectively took away VA's outside shooting strength, esp in the 1st half; we almost always had a double team guarding any potential shooter
  • (-): None; we didn't show our full strength in the 2nd half, resting our starters

Career Game #197

2006 NCAA Tournament West Regionals Semifinals (Sweet 16)

Mar 24, 2006: (5) #18 Washington (28-5, 15-3) vs (1) #7 Minnesota (28-4, 14-4)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, not many freedom, flex
  • Defense: m2m, press at points
  • Key Players: Jr SG Bryan Riggs 14.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 44% 3PT
  • Notes: A good offensive team, and an even better defensive team limiting opponents to just 59.3 ppg (#11 Nat'l)

How they got here

  • Automatic selection (Champs Big 10)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Bethune-Cookman, 89-54 (Riggs 21 pts, 8 rebs, 6 asts)
  • (3rd Rd) Def Central Florida, 69-56 (Riggs 16 pts, 8 rebs)

1st Half

A very exciting game.  We had a promising start, leading 7-0.  MINN then unleashed a barrage of outside shots, and we suddenly went down by as many as 13.  Sensing that the game could soon be over, we maximized our pressure defense, and that helped us come back into the game.  MINN committed 15 fouls, and we fully capitalized via the FT line

Halftime: Up 38-36

Key stat(s)

  • FT: WASH 23-25, MINN 5-10
  • Steals: WASH 5, MINN 2

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Louvon Davey 7 pts
  • MINN: SG Bryan Riggs 8 pts, 5 rebs

2nd Half

Game remained close, until SG Louvon Davey scored our 10 straight pts, including back to back 3s
11:45, Up 58-48

MINN putting the clamps on defense, and came up with a 9-0 run.  I had to burn an early timeout
9:12, Up 58-57

MINN taking the lead after a 3pt shot by SG Bryan Riggs
5:16, Down 67-68

We are in the penalty.  After a split FT by MINN, PG Jeryl Milton hits a jumper to tie the game.  After a turnover by MINN, SG Louvon Lavey hits a 3!  Lavey has 26 pts so far.  Up 3.  Another turnover for MINN.  Media timeout
3:55, Up 72-69

MINN getting the steal this time around.  They miss a 3.  On our next play, we go to C Lee Martin, who scores inside.  Up 5.  We got called for a foul.  Split by MINN.  MINN has shot just 10-21 FT.  We go to SG Louvon Davey, who missed on a drive.  Rebound by MINN.  MINN's SG Bryan Riggs forced to give up the ball because of our double team.  We get a steal!  But a counter steal by MINN, and they scored on the break.  Timeout
2:03, Up 74-72

SG Louvon Davey missing again.  MINN chance to tie or take the lead with a 3.  Foul.  MINN makes both.  We wasted our 5 pt lead we had just moments ago.  Tied.  Our spacing is not good.  PG Jeryl Milton taking a bad fade away shot.  Missed again.  MINN with the ball.  Milton gets a steal.  Timeout
0:55, Tied at 74

SF Chris Farrell gets a good pick from C Lee Martin.  Farrell drives and scores!  Timeout MINN
0:47, Up 76-74

Another foul!  MINN's PF Dan Barnes heads back to the line.  Barnes is 2-6 FT so far.  Barnes splits.  Timeout
0:32, Up 76-75

MINN not fouling.  We were passing the ball around.  And MINN came up with a steal!  So much drama in this game.  Timeout MINN
0:13, Up 76-75

MINN goes back to PF Dan Barnes with less than 5 secs left.  If we were leading by 2 or more, we might have intentionally foul Barnes (3-8 FT today).  But I gave instructions not to foul.  Barnes puts up a shot.  And Barnes scores!  We have no timeouts left, and we were not able to put up a shot.  Oh what a sorry loss for us.  We were just seconds away from advancing to the Elite 8, but Barnes made a big time shot there; Barnes finished with 21 pts.  This one will sting for quite a while, but we made a lot of progress this season

Final Score: Washington - 76, Minnesota - 77
