Career Game #103

Current streaks on the line

  • 24-game non-conference win streak

Nov 30, 2003: #25 Delaware St (4-0) @ Florida Gulf (3-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, high post
  • Defense: m2m, press a lot
  • Key Players: Jr SG Chris Spurgeon 10.0 ppg
  • Notes: Bench averages almost 35 ppg

Injury

  • C Brandon Braun our for this game with a sprained foot; rest of our big men must step up

1st Half

C Matt Ward has filled in nicely, taking the spot of C Brandon Braun in the starting lineup.  Our defense is holding up, although we have a little bit of disadvantage on rebounding without Braun in there.

Halftime: Up 38-30

Key stat(s)

  • Paint: DELST 20, FGCU 12
  • FG: DELST 42%, FGCU 36%

Key Players

  • DELST: C Matt Ward 8 pts, 4 rebs

2nd Half

We increased the lead to 14.  FGCU asserting themselves on the offensive glass, and cut down our lead to 4, before we scored in the last play.  C Matt Ward picking up his 4th foul.

11:59, Up 51-45

FGCU eventually claimed the lead, as we continue to get beaten on the boards.  C Matt Ward has fouled out.  We are in the penalty

4:39, Down 58-59

FGCU scoring their next 4 pts on the line, followed by 2 FGs.  We managed to stay close, but time is not on our side.  Timeout

2:02, Down 64-67

SG Dan Smith hits a big 3 to tie the game!  We need to get some stops.  We forced a miss on FGCU, but they got an offensive rebound again.  Putback is no good, but there's a foul.  Missed both.  But another offensive rebound.  This time they made the follow up shot.  We wasted a golden opportunity there.  Timeout

1:21, Down 67-69

PG Anthony Turner fakes a 3, dribbles closer, pulls up a jumper, and scores!  Tied was once again.  We left open an FGCU player for a wide open 3, and we got punished when they made it.  Damn.  FGCU was 4-19 3PT prior to that shot.  Timeout

0:39, Down 69-72

We don't necessarily need a 3.  SG Dan Smith takes a quick shot on the drive, and scores.  Good play.  Down 1. 0:27 left.  We gave up the foul.  FGCU in the double bonus.  Missed the 1st.  Makes the 2nd.  I call my last timeout

0:22, Down 71-73

SG Dan Smith tries to go for a win, and shoots a 3.  Miss.  FGCU grabs the board, and we give up a foul.  0:06 left.  FGCU makes both FTs to ice the game.  Can't blame Smith for going for a 3 in our last play, instead of trying to force OT; we're on the road, we're tired and undermanned up front.

Flawless performance at both ends of the court.  We forced GW to take a lot of outside shots.  On the other hand, we had a good mix of inside and outside scoring.  C Matt Ward a surprise performaer off the bench.

  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr C Kareem Ashbury 14.2 ppg, 6.5 rpg
  • Notes: UCSD averaging just 63.5 ppg and 27.4% 3PT

1st Half

UCSD has got some talented big men who were active on offense, forcing C Brandon Braun to commit 3 fouls.  Fortunately for us, SG Kevin Stokes was on fire in the 1st half.  C Matt Ward providing quality minutes yet again with 7 pts, 7 rebs

Halftime: Up 41-31

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: DELST 4-13, UCSD 2-9
  • Fast break: DELST 11, UCSD 7

2nd Half

UCSD has scored 4 triples already in the 2nd half, and started to creep into our lead.

11:20, Up 57-51

SG Kevin Stokes continues to sizzle from the outside, while we're getting contributions from our bench as well led by SG Dan Spatola.

6:42, Up 73-57

Lots of fouls called towards the end, and UCSD not able to get traction on any sort of momentum

  • (-): We need to get as much from C Brandon Braun, and he has to keep himself away from foul trouble

Career Game #107

Dec 13, 2003: Delaware St (7-1) @ Delaware (3-3)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, high post
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr SG Greg Paben 11.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg
  • Notes: DEL shooting just 28.7% 3PT (#317 Nat'l)

1st Half

We took full advantage of DEL's turnovers, converted them to easy fast break pts.  Got off to an early 24-8 lead.  Our FG% dropped towards the end of the 1st half, but DEL has not improved on their offense either.  C Brandon Braun had the same number of rebs as the entire DEL team

Halftime: Up 40-23

Key stat(s)

  • FG: DELST 38%, DEL 29%
  • Fast break: DELST 14, DEL 4

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 9 pts, 13 rebs

2nd Half

We led by as many as 28.  DEL had a mild rally, bringing down our lead to 15, but we pulled away again in the end.  Should have been a much closer game as both teams struggled to make shots, but the dominating performance on the boards by C Brandon Braun was the difference.  DEL fans should be glad that they won't see Braun again next year.

  • Notes: FLAM shooting just 28.4% 3PT (#330)

1st Half

Came out flat defensively at the beginning of the game.  Down 17-27, we rode on the backs of C Brandon Braun and SG Kevin Stokes to bring us back to the game, and finish the 1st half on a 18-5 run.  Braun and Stokes accounted for 32 of our 35 1st half pts

11:08, Up 67-47

Despite C Brandon Braun's limited minutes, our 2nd half offense of 59 pts blew FLAM right off the gates.  We usually have a har time putting up pts in this place.

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, some freedom, flex
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr SG Gyasi Edwards 15.1 ppg
  • Notes: BETH defending the 3 well, allowing just 27.3% 3PT (#9 Nat'l)

1st Half

BETH not giving us much room outside, so we attacked the basket and took advantage of our opportunities at the line.

Halftime: Up 50-36

2nd Half

I'm not satisfied with our defense, giving up 48% FG and allowing BETH to stay close

11:48, Up 66-53

BETH still putting a lot of pressure by scoring a ton of pts here in the 2nd half.  Not over yet.  Both teams in penalty

7:31, Up 75-68

It was just a 7 pt lead before PF Jordan Legans put up 4 straight pts,  Led by 11 with 3 mins remaining.  Made 4 stops in BETH's last 6 possessions.  Up 9 with 1:10 to go.  Another miss by BETH.  We made 2 FTs, and that should do it.  Our defense almost costing us this game.  All 5 starters scored in double figures

Career Game #113

Current streaks on the line

  • 44-game home win streak
  • 9-game win streak

Jan 11, 2004: Howard (11-3, 2-1)  @ #22 Delaware St (13-1, 3-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, 5 out
  • Defense: 3-2, rarely press
  • Key Players: Jr SG AD Johnson 16.3 ppg (1st Team All-MEAC last season)
  • Notes: HOW is best 3PT shooting team in MEAC at 42.0% (#15 Nat'l)

1st Half

We really needed to play good defense in the 1st half, otherwise we would have been looking at a deficit because of our poor shooting performance.  Both teams shot 33% FG.  HOW's turnovers tilted the advantage to our favor

Halftime: Up 25-23

Key stat(s)

  • Turnovers: DELST 5, HOW 14
  • 3PT: DELST 1-8, HOW 2-5

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 9 pts, 2 rebs, 3 fouls

2nd Half

HOW with 21 turnovers already.  C Brandon picked up his 4th foul.  We're hanging on

10:14, Up 45-39

Everyone just chipping in a few pts, but that's enough so far to keep HOW at bay.  We're in the penalty

5:17, Up 52-46

C Brandon Braun only lasted less than mins since he came back, and then fouled out.  HOW made 2 FTs to make this a 1 possession game

2:38, Up 55-52

A bad pass by PG Anthony Turner.  HOW had 2 offensive rebounds on their next play, before we got called for another foul.  HOW sinks both FTs.  Timeout

1:41, Up 55-54

We got called on a 10-sec back court violation.  HOW's AD Johnson scores on a drive, and we're suddenly staring at a deficit.  Timeout

1:08, Down 55-56

Another bad pass.  Damn.  But we get a counter steal.  Outlet by C Matt Ward to SG Kevin Stokes for the easy 2!  Timeout HOW

0:45, Up 57-56

HOW makes a turnover!  HOW not fouling.  PF Jordan Legans isolated down low, and Legans scores!  Timeout HOW

0:18, Up 58-56

We have to defend the 3.  HOW had to put up a 3 against our double team.  Not even close.  We get the rebound, and HOW not able to foul until the final buzzer.  Not a pretty win; we just got lucky.

  • Key Players: Jr PG Nolan Williams 13.3 ppg, 46% 3PT
  • Notes: BEL 2nd lowest scoring team in MEAC, at 61.9 ppg

1st Half

C Brandon Braun had 3 fouls in the 1st half, and picked up his 4th on our very 1st defensive play of the 2nd half.  But BEL continues to have problems keeping the ball, adding 8 more turn overs so far in the 2nd half, and allowing us to start with a 11-0 run.  We led by 20 midway in the 2nd half, and cruised our way to an easy win.  SG Kevin Stokes was consistent, PG Jack Nixon provided productive minutes, and C Matt Ward filled in nicely while BRaun spent most of his time sitting on the bench

Career Game #117

Current streaks on the line

  • 13-game win streak

Jan 25, 2004: #16 Delaware St (17-1, 7-0) @ Norfolk St (14-4, 6-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, outside, some freedom, high post
  • Defense: 2-3, rarely press
  • Key Players: Jr PG Marcus Stevens 17.5 ppg
  • Notes: NORST with the conference-best defense, allowing just 60.9 opp ppg and 37.6% opp FG (#6 Nat'l)

1st Half

We had 7 less turnovers than NORST, but we haven't fully taken advantage in terms of scoring on the break.  Our 3PT shooting providing the small difference in this tight game so far

Halftime: Up 37-33

Key stat(s)

  • Turnovers: DELST 7, NORST 14
  • 3PT: DELST 6-16, NORST 2-5

Key Players

  • DELST: SG Kevin Stokes 13 pts, 3 3s
  • NORST: PG Marcus Stevens 14 pts, 6-7 FG

2nd Half

SG Kevin Stokes added 2 more 3s to start a 10-0 run, and open up a 14 pt lead.  I yanked out SG Dan Spatola after he threw away 3 consecutive passes, and NORST able to inch closer

11:02, Up 47-39

Our turnovers continue to pile up, now with 14.  I showed my displeasure to the team during the timeout

7:43, Up 49-44

The players responded by tightening our defense, and coming up with a small 9-3 run, enough to stretch our lead to double digits

2:57, Up 58-47

NORST with one last push, scoring back to back baskets.  Timeout

1:53, Up 58-51

A clutch 3 by SG Kevin Stokes!  Up 10.  A miss 3 by NORST.  We slowed down.  NORST fouled Stokes while taking a 3.  Stokes nailed all 3 FTs to make this game out of reach for NORST.  A tough, grind it out game, but I'm glad our defense improving lately

Career Game #123

Current streaks on the line

  • 19-game win streak

Feb 15, 2004: #8 Delaware St (23-1, 13-0) @ Bethune-Cookman (10-14, 5-8)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, some freedom, flex
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr SG Gyasi Edwards 16.3 ppg, 42% 3PT
  • Notes: BETH 2nd highest scoring team in MEAC at 72.0 ppg

1st Half

BETH made their 1st 4 attempts from 3.  We did a good job of staying close by scoring on the break and from the line.  And when BETH's shooting cooled off (they missed their last 6 attempts from beyond the arc), that is when we created some separation

Halftime: Up 48-31

Key stat(s)

  • FT: DELST 13-19, BETH 5-9
  • Fast break: DELST 12, BETH 5

Key Players

  • DELST: SG Kevin Stokes 14 pts, 3 3s, 4 stls
  • BETH: SG Gyasi Edwards 11 pts, 3 3s

2nd Half

Our lead grew quickly to 34.  Not even BETH's outside shooting revival, and our early penalty, could bring them out of this hole

Final Score: Delaware St - 94, Bethune-Cookman - 62

Box Scores

Career Game #124

Current streaks on the line

  • 20-game win streak

Feb 18, 2004: #8 Delaware St (24-1, 14-0) @ Howard (14-11, 5-9)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, 5 out
  • Defense: 3-2, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr PG Lou Foreman 12.7 ppg, 3.5 apg
  • Notes: Leading scorer SG AD Johnson (16.4 ppg) is injured for the rest of the season

1st Half

Poor shooting from both sides.  We had some advantage on scoring on the break, and that could be they on who will win this game

Halftime: Up 26-20

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: DELST 1-13, HOW 1-6
  • Fast break: DELST 10, HOW 2

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 12 pts, 9 rebs

2nd Half

Despite our poor shooting, we still managed to start the 2nd half on a 12-0 run, enough to give us a 18 pt cushion.  HOW momentarily cut it down to 11, but their anemic offense won't be able to sustain a prolonged rally.  The 2 teams combined for 5-38 3PT

Final Score: Delaware St - 56, Howard - 37

Box Scores

Braun 17, 14, 2, 2 stls (*)

Stokes 8, 3, 1

Spatola 5, 6, 1

Turner 4, 2, 3

Legans 3, 5, 0

Team Stats

FG: 36-31%

Rebs: +4

Asts: +2

TOs: -11

Pts in paint: +18

2nd chance: +10

Fast break: +12

Post game observations

  • (+): The +22 combined differential on 2nd chance and fast break pts provided the "extra" offense in this poor shooting game
  • (-): I can hardly remember if we have shot worse than this, 2-22 3PT (9%); SG Kevin Stokes 0-8 3PT, and SG Dan Smith 1-10 3PT

MEAC Conference Standings

  1. Delaware St, 15-0 (W15)
  2. Norfolk St, 11-4 (W4)
  3. Florida A&M, 9-6 (L1)
