Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, triangle
  • Defense: 2-3, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Jr PF Daniel Simmons 13 pts, 9 rebs in the 1st game
  • Notes: Limited their opponents to 39% FG in the last round

1st Half

The defense is there.  We just need to shoot a little better in the 2nd half, or get more pts on the break

Halftime: Up 22-20

Key stat(s)

  • FGs: UCLA 28%, NWEST 21%
  • Fast break: UCLA 4, NWEST 0

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Jim McFadden 4 pts, 3 rebs

2nd Half

SG Jim McFadden showed signs of heating up early in the 2nd half.  PF Julian Irvin with 9 pts off the bench

11:27, Up 38-33

Scoring picking up for both teams.  We're using a 3 guard lineup in hopes of generating more offense

7:07, Up 50-46

Our offense got frozen.  We're in the penalty

3:51, Down 50-54

Our deficit increased to 6.  SG Jim McFadden scored a 3.  Down 3.  A turnover by NWEST which we turned to a rare fast break basket.  Down 1.  NWEST makes 2 FTs.  Down 3.  MCFadden scores on a jumper.  Down 1.  NWEST scores a huge 3!  Timeout

1:35, Down 57-61

We miss a 3.  Another foul on us. UCLA missed both FTs!  We still have a chance.  I inserted SF John Milton just a while back, and Milton drains a 3!  0:37 left.  No need to foul, just play good defense.  Milton comes off with a steal!  Milton with an outlet pass to C Mel McAfee who scores!  Timeout NWEST

0:11, Up 62-61

We played good denial defense on NWEST shooters.  NWEST's PF Daniel Simmons has to put up a contested 3 against a double team.  Missed.  Game over.  We escape

1st Half

It took a while before our defense finally kicked in, and turned our 8 pt deficit into a comfortable lead at the break.  We were making our outside shots.  But we still remember what happened in our last game, where we let a 24 pt lead slipped away.

Career Game #321

Start of conference games

Dec 26, 2009: #8 UCLA (11-1, 0-0) @ USC (4-7, 0-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, 5 out
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr SF Michael Holmes 14.8 ppg
  • Notes: SCAL shoots the ball at 47.1% FG and 43% 3PT

1st Half

SCAL doesn't make too many 3PT attempts, but made most of them when they do.  Our fouls have been a factor, giving up a lot of FTs to SCAL.  SG Jim McFadden with 3 fouls.  PF Justin Blevins got injured early

Halftime: Down 37-41

Key stat(s)

  • FT: UCLA 6-11, SCAL 15-20

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Jim McFadden 11 pts, 3 rebs

2nd Half

We're scoring well, but can't get a bigger lead.  We need to improve on the defensive end

9:29, Up 62-59

Almost every jump shot that SCAL takes goes in.

6:15, Down 66-68

Down 6 earlier, after we threw the ball away consecutive times.  A triple each by SG Jim McFadden and SG Tre Cleveland helped us got back

3:24, Down 74-75

Teams traded misses.  On our next play after another miss by SCAL, it took us 5 shots and 4 offensive rebounds to finally reclaim the lead

2:09, Up 76-75

A miss by SCAL.  They get the ball back on an offensive rebound.  But they threw the ball away.  After our timeout, C Mel McAfee grabs an offensive rebound, scores on a put back plus a foul!  McAfee missed the bonus.  SCAL rebounds.  Still just a 1 possession game.  SCAL missing again.  SCAL not fouling.  PG Emeka Dixon with a surprise attempt from 3.  It's good!  Timeout SCAL

0:54, Up 81-75

SCAL scoreless in almost 3 mins.  Another missed 3 by SCAL.  That should do it

1st Half

12:43, Down 59-61

Our defense can't seem to make any stops

7:27, Down 69-77

Still down 10 with 2 mins remaining.  We started shooting 3s, but we're not making them when we needed it the most.  Very disappointing game

  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: So C Greg Bruton 10.9 ppg, 5.6 rpg
  • Notes: One of the better teams in handling the ball, committing just 12.0 topg

1st Half

Slow start, missing 12 of our 1st 13 shots.  We then hit 3 consecutive triples to take the lead, which we would never relinquish the remainder of the 1st half.  We need to be better though, on transition defense

Halftime: Up 36-29

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: UCLA 6-15, OR 1-7
  • Fast break: UCLA 2, OR 10

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Jim McFadden 20 pts, 3 rebs, 4 3s

2nd Half

Our turnovers have nullified the gains we made in the 1st half.  OR shooting better in the 2nd half

11:40, Up 50-48

Our 3pt shooting keeping our heads above water

6:54, Up 60-56

A small run, capped by another 3 from SG Jim McFadden, put us ahead by double figures

4:43, Up 70-60

We were able to respond to every basket made by OR.  We just got into penalty,  OR made 2 FTs.  Timeout

1:44, Up 74-66

We miss.  But we got the ball back after getting a steal, and scoring in transition.  Up 10.  We started slowing down the game, giving no time for OR to make a comeback

Career Game #328

Injury

  • PG Emeka Dixon (9.8 ppg, 3.3 apg) out for almost a week with a sore calf

Jan 19, 2010: #8 UCLA (17-2, 6-1) @ Stanford (11-5, 6-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, triangle
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Jr SG Eric Hare 22.1 ppg (#1 Pac 12), 3.6 rpg, 2-time All-American
  • Notes: STAN allowing just 40.1% opp FG

1st Half

We were taking care of the ball and maintaining a small lead except during the latter part, where we committed a series of turnovers and gave up several transition baskets.  We also missed 7 FTs, so yes, we let a lot of opportunities slipped away

Halftime: Down 34-36

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 40%, STAN 47%
  • Fast break: UCLA 2, STAN 8

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Jim McFadden 8 pts, 4 rebs
  • STAN: SG Eric Hare 13 pts, 4 asts

2nd Half

We couldn't match STAN's outside shooting.  STAN's SG Eric Hare already with 21 pts

11:32, Down 45-58

STAN played stifling defense in the 2nd half.  Our fast break opportunities were also limited, and we had zero FT attempts in the 2nd half.  STAN's SG Eric Hare finished with 30 pts, 6 rebs, 6 asts, and 4 stls; Hare would most likely win his 3rd straight Pac 12 POY

Final Score: UCLA - 59, Stanford - 83

Career Game #330

Jan 26, 2010: #9 UCLA (18-3, 7-2) @ #13 Washington (17-3, 6-3)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, princeton
  • Defense: 2-3, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr SG Winston Waldon 20.9 ppg, 5.8 rpg
  • Notes: 1st time back to my previous school.  Good memories, winning 2 national titles.  WASH remains a top offensive team, at 78.3 ppg (#1 Nat'l)

1st Half

We stepped on the gas and just run at all times.  We were also able to harass and force WASH to a lot of turnovers.  These are the same strategies I've used with great success during my tenure with WASH.  SG Jim McFadden outscored the entire WASH team

Halftime: Up 52-25

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 56%, WASH 35%
  • Fast break: UCLA 14, WASH 4

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Jim McFadden 26 pts, 6 3s

2nd Half

We took out the crowd as early as the 1st half.  Lead went to as high as 32.  WASH began to gain some momentum midway in the 2nd half

9:23, Up 63-46

WASH continues to climb.  SG Winston Waldon hits a 3 to cut our lead to single digits.  Timeout

2:46, Up 65-58

We missed.  Fortunately, WASH missed also.  We get another chance.  Still can't buy a basket.  We have scored just 13 pts here in the 2nd half.  WASH with the ball.  They go inside.  Missed.  We get the rebound.  We had 2 shots.  Missed both.  WASH missed a 3.  But they get the offensive rebound, and hit a jumper.  Timeout

0:57, Up 65-60

WASH had to give up several fouls to get to penalty, otherwise we would just waste a lot of time.  PF Justin Blevins at the line.  Blevins hits both to give us a 3 possession lead.  0:37 to go.  We were called for a foul while WASH's PG Chris Simmons was shooting.  But Simmons missed both FTs.  That should do it.  That was a close one.  No lead is safe against WASH

Final Score: UCLA - 69, Washington - 63
