  • Notes: Relatively close game in our last meeting, where we won by 8.  CAL hit 8 3s in that game

Bubble watch

  • We're currently #10, which is most likely equivalent to a (3) seed.  That last loss against ORST most likely ended our chances to gain a (1) seed, even if we win the Pac 12 tournament

  • Oregon and Stanford are almost sure of making the tournament.  Arizona, California, and Oregon St are currently outside the bubble

  • Key Players: Sr SF Billy Bell 16.7 ppg, 51% 3PT

1st Half

Our big men putting OR's front line into foul trouble, including 3 on C Greg Bruton.  However, we have missed 8 FTs already.  We also need to defend against 3 much better in the 2nd half

  • FT: UCLA 16-24, OR 8-9

Key Players

  • UCLA: C Aaron Lappas 9 pts

2nd Half

OR early in the penalty again, but we continue to miss from the line; 13 missed FTs already

4:00, Up 64-61

OR getting their bearings back.  We also entered penalty

2:27, Tied at 67

A 3 by PG Eugene Tucker!  Up 3.  OR hits 2 FTs,  Up 1.  SG Dickey Walton takes it strong to the hoop, and scores!  Up 3.  OR hits a jumper.  Up 1.  What a game we are having.  We miss.  OR scores on a drive.  Timeout

SG Dickey Walton scores!  Timeout OR

0:56, Up 74-73

OR's SG Terrance Fein scores again!  Fein with a game high 20 pts.  Timeout

SG Dickey Walton drives to the middle, pops up a jumper, and it's good! Timeout OR.  Walton started the game 0-9 FG, but has connected on his last 4 shots

0:32, Up 76-75

Our press broke down, and OR scores on transition.  I probably should not have press in that situation.  Timeout

0:19, Down 76-77

SG Dickey Walton wants the ball.  He gets it.  Walton drives.  Missed.  Out of bounds in our favor.  0:10 left.  We inbound.  Can't get it to Walton.  We go C Anthony Burton instead on the post.  Single coverage.  0:02 left. How they got here

  • Automatic selection (Champs, MEAC tournament)

1st Half

BETH hitting their 3s early to keep this game close.  We were still trailing 22-23, and then we finished the 1st half strongly on 17-4 run, fueled mostly by BETH's turnovers

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, outside, motion
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Jr SG Kenyatta Mardis 19.6 ppg, 4.5 rpg
  • Notes: We beat them earlier in the season, at their place, 74-69, in which we scored 21 fast break pts.  CREIGH does not waste too many opportunities from the line, shooting 79.2% FT (#9 Nat'l)

How they got here

  • (2nd Rd) Def #25 St John's, 89-68 (Mardis 29 pts, 4, rebs, 4 asts, 5 3s)

1st Half

Calls are very tight at both ends of the floor.  But we caught the bigger fish early, when CREIGH's SG Kenyatta Mardis picked up 2 quick fouls.  But even without Mardis, CREIGh able to to keep close.  Mardis returned at the latter part of the 1st half, but remained scoreless.  So if we were able shut down an almost 20 ppg scorer, but our lead is only 4, then it mean s we have to further improve our defense in the 2nd half.  A combined 42 FT attempts were taken in the 1st half

Halftime: Up 40-36

Key stat(s)

  • FT: UCLA 18-22, CREIGH 19-20

Career Game #412

2012 NCAA Tournament Midwest Regionals Semifinals (Sweet 16)

Mar 23, 2012: (3) #13 UCLA (25-7, 16-2) vs (2) #6 Memphis (26-7, 15-3)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, motion
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr SG Lucas Ohl 20.3 ppg, 6.4 rpg
  • Notes: Even if they are playing at a fast pace, they still limit their opponents to just 60.8 ppg (#23 Nat'l).  Seldom commits errors, at 11.9 topg (#9)

How they got here

  • At-large selection (2nd place, CUSA regular season)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Maine, 62-49 (Ohl 21 pts, 7 rebs)
  • (3rd Rd) Def Duke, 72-59 (Ohl 18 pts, 7 rebs)

1st Half

I though we got a break when MEM's SG Lucas Ohl picked up 2 quick fouls.  MEM had other players who can score from the outside.  Our bigger problem though was how to score against the stingy defense of MEM, as we struggled early with our shots.  The answer came from the bench, with both C Chris Condill and SG TJ Jones scoring 10 pts each to help kick start our offense.  It also helped that we forced MEM to a lot of turnovers during the latter part of the 1st half

Halftime: Up 42-29

Key stat(s)

  • Bench: UCLA 31, MEM 15
  • TOs: UCLA 8, MEM 17

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG TJ Jones 10 pts

2nd Half

C Chris Condill scored the 1st 7 pts of the 2nd half, to push our lead to 20.  MEM regrouped, and starting to make their comeback.  But as soon as MEM's SG Lucas Ohl hit his 1st 2 baskets of the game, he picked up his 4th foul.  I'm starting to get worried though on our turnovers; we already have 6 here in the 2nd half

10:22, Up 54-45

We made some key baskets to keep MEM at bay, but we can feel that they are breathing down our necks, and ready to make one final push
5:49, Up 61-52

PF Justin Blevins, who only had 1 pt prior to his re entry in the game, came up with 5 straight pts.  SF David Fuhs, who is scoreless so far, connected on a jumper.  A small 7-0 run, but it was enough to give us a commanding 16pt lead, and forcing MEM to a timeout
4:03, Up 68-52

Still a 17pt lead with less than 2 mins remaining, when MEM's SG Lucas Ohl ended his night (and college career) with his 5th foul.  We move to the Elite 8!

Final Score: UCLA - 75, Memphis - 57

Career Game #413

2012 NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional Finals (Elite 8)

Mar 25, 2012: (3) #13 UCLA (26-7, 16-2) vs (1) #1 Iowa (32-1, 18-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal  pace, balanced, princeton
  • Defense: 1-2-2, rarely press
  • Key Players: Fr C Mack Iversen 21.8 ppg (#7 Nat'l), 13.5 rpg (#1), 3.6 stls (#3), 2.9 blks (#2), #1 recruit this season
  • Notes: Simply put, IOWA is the #1 team in terms of defensive efficiency, and for good reason; 51.1 opp ppg (#1 Nat'l), 34.2% opp FG (#1), 30.1% opp 3PT (#12).  So in other words, we're going up against the #1 ranked team, #1 defensive team, and the #1 player

How they got here

  • At-large selection (1st place, Big 10 regular season; only loss cae against IND in the Big 10 tournament finals)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Texas Christian, 75-58 (Iversen 25 pts, 17 rebs, 3 stls)
  • (3rd Rd) Def Bradley, 64-54 (Iversen 11 pts, 10 rebs, 3 blks)
  • (Sweet 16) Def #17 Auburn, 76-62 (Iversen 35 pts, 15 rebs, 3 blks)

1st Half

So far, we're executing our defensive game plan against IOWA's C Mack Iversen, forcing him to shoot outside his comfort zone.  However, we can't afford to give IOWA 2nd chance opportunities.  Our turnovers have also hurt us, giving IOWA plenty of fast break pts

Halftime: Down 26-36

Key stat(s)

  • 2nd chance: UCLA 4, IOWA 14
  • Fast break: UCLA 2, IOWA 13

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Dickey Walton 13 pts, 4 rebs
  • IOWA: C Mack Iversen 10 pts, 10 rebs, 2 blks

2nd Half

Good start with a 11-2 run.  IOWA's C Mack Iversen forced to take outside shots, and is now 4-14 FG

13:25, Down 37-38

IOWA, who were shooting 3-16 3PT earlier, has 3 of their last 4 attempts from downtown.  It's a tough decision to make on whether we need to adjust defensively, or continue to clog up the lane.  I decided to stick with the zone. We're still very much in this game
8:37, Down 45-47

PG Eugene Tucker with back to back turnovers earlier.  IOWA hits another 3.  IOWA's C Mack Iversen hits a long 2 for his 1st basket of the 2nd half
5:27, Down 48-54

After IOWA hits another 3, it now forces me to play m2m defense.
3:28, Down 50-57

PG Eugene Tucker hots a jumper.  Down 5.  IOWA's C Mack Iversen, seeing he has now more room to operate inside, takes it strong and got fouled; Iversen splits.  Down 6.  SG Dickey Walton missed.  We got called on a foul against a jump shooter.  Bad foul.  IOWA made both FTs.  TImeout
1:57, Down 52-60

SG Chris Williams can get it to fall.  IOWA turns the ball over.  We also turned the ball over.  IOWA's C Mack Iversen hits another jump shot.  Down 10.  We have to start thinking 3s.  We hot 1.  Down 7.  0:32 left.  We started fouling.  IOWA missed their FT.  Window of opportunity here.  But another turn over on our part, our 16th for the game,  That ended our chances.  Those chances were few and far in between, and we threw away most of them.  Great effort by SG Dickey Walton, who played 39 mins today, and was our only consistent scorer

An up and down season.  We'll have a strong recruiting class coming in next season.  We'll see

Final Score: UCLA - 57, Iowa - 62

Box Scores

Walton 24, 8, 1, 3 tos, 2 3s
Lappas 8, 5, 0

Burton 6, 7, 1
Cotton 3, 1, 1, 3 tos

Post game observations

  • (-): A good comeback in the 2nd half.  But those "extra" points (2nd chance, fast break) we have given IOWA in the 1st half proved to be too much to make up

Start of Season

Nov 15, 2012: #15 UCLA (0-0) @ #14 Seton Hall (0-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: very slow pace, inside, 5 out
  • Defense: m2m, only press in close and late situations
  • Key Players: Fr PF Justin Serraville, #8 recruit
  • Notes:

1st Half

Down early at 2-9.  We established our inside game to settle down on offense.  We also tightened our defense to lead by as many as 11.  However, our penalty situation towards the latter part of the 1st half allowed SH to score a lot of pts from the line

Halftime: Up 34-31

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 47%, SH 36%
  • FT: UCLA 3-4, SH 12-13

Key Players

  • UCLA: C Aaron Lappas 9 pts, 2 rebs
  • SH: PF Justin Serraville 10 pts, 6 rebs

2nd Half

Both teams throwing bricks from the outside, with a combined 2-24 3PT.  Some transition baskets helped us generate some offense

11:18, Up 45-37

SH came to within 2 pts of our lead.  Our 2 freshmen, SG Mark Pettway and PF Chris Lucas hit some key baskets to reestablish our double digit advantage

6:06, Up 57-47

We played good defense the rest of the game.  Our two 7-footers played together to make sure we control the boards. SH got into penalty, and we scored some pts from the line to keep our distance from SH

Final Score: UCLA - 66, Seton Hall - 51
