  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Fr C Jeremy Piper 10.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg
  • Notes: AZST's bench scored 52 pts in the last game, a road win at that

1st Half

Nice to see we're not wasting our possessions, patiently working the ball inside either on low post plays by C Chris Condill, or the penetrations of our guards

Career Game #356

Jan 2, 2011: #19 UCLA (10-3, 2-0) @ Oregon (8-3, 1-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, flex
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr PG Justin Robinson 10.5 ppg, 4.3 apg
  • Notes: OR averaging almost 75 ppg

1st Half

OR shot well in our visit here last season, and their 9-10 FG start today seems to indicate it will be another tough defensive match up for us.  OR's agile big men able to rotate quickly against our penetrations. We got to the line several times to keep us close in the game

Halftime: Down 37-42

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 38%, OR 62%
  • FT: UCLA 12-18, OR 5-8

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Jim McFadden 9 pts, 5 rebs
  • OR: PG Justin Robinson 10 pts, 3 asts

2nd Half

OR still shooting at a very high clip of almost 66% FG, and we're not able to keep up.  We are in the penalty

11:04, Down 52-68

We were simply trading baskets, and that is not the way to rally against a hot shooting team.  Our defense had no answer today

Career Game #357

Jan 5, 2011: Arizona (9-5, 2-1) @ #19 UCLA (10-4, 2-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, high post
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr SG Mac Henderson 16.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 4.1 apg
  • Notes: Henderson, who had several "near triple-doubles" this season, is a walk on playing on his 1st year of college basketball

1st Half

Good interior passing, resulting in either easy baskets underneath, or ARIZ forced to give up fouls.  ARIZ's SG Mac Henderson not much of a factor with only 5 pts on 2-8 FG

Halftime: Up 37-24

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 44%, ARIZ 31%
  • Paint: UCLA 16, ARIZ 4

Key Players

  • UCLA: C Chris Condill 8 pts, 4-4 FG

2nd Half

An 8-0 run at the start of the 2nd half pushed our lead to 21.  C Chris Condill continues to have another good offensive game.  He and PF PF Julian Blevins have combined for 12-13 FG so far

11:07, Up 60-38

ARIZ's SG Mac Henderson tried to put his team back, scoring 15 of his 20 pts in the 2nd half.  But our dominance inside the paint were too much to overcome for ARIZ

1st Half

Lots of good performances in the 1st half, including surprise contributions from Fr SF Dave Fuhs who is perfect from the field at 5-5 FG; and even walk on C Larry Roberts.  Even UTAH shot well, but they lived up to their reputation as being as turnover machine

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, 5 out
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr SG Darcel Nelson 14.3 ppg
  • Notes: ORST is best in the nation in 3PT shooting at 45.2%

1st Half

We didn't give much daylight to ORST's shooters, limiting them to just 1-4 3PT.  On our part, another good shooting performance in the 1st half; we're making our outside shots, and dominating the paint as well.  Almost perfect, except for our turnovers.  PF Justin Blevins got injured

Halftime: Up 44-30

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 55%, ORST 40%
  • TOs: UCLA 10, ORST 8

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Jim McFadden 13 pts, 3 rebs

2nd Half

It was ORST's turn to commit lots of mistakes.  Our shooting slightly dipped off, but we made it up by grabbing plenty of offensive rebounds.  Lead was 21 midway in the 2nd half.  ORST had a small run, but it happened very late in the game when the result is already settled

Career Game #361

Jan 19, 2011: #10 Stanford (13-3, 6-1) @ #14 UCLA (14-4, 6-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, flex
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Fr PG Mike Fleming 18.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 5.7 apg, #1 recruit this season
  • Notes: STAN is so deep that 3 of their players are suspended, including 2-time All American SG Eric Hare, and yet they are still winning

1st Half

STAN's defense has put us on the back seat majority of the 1st half.  It was only during the latter part when some of shots began to fall.  STAN has taken away our ability to run, and score easy baskets in transition

Halftime: Down 34-35

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: UCLA 4-4, STAN 2-12
  • 2nd chance: UCLA 0, STAN 5

Key Players

  • UCLA: PG Emeka Dixon 11 pts, 3-3 FG
  • STAN: PG Mike Fleming 2 pts, 4 asts

2nd Half

Got a  little break when STAN's PG Mike Fleming picked up his 3rd foul early in the 2nd half.  STAN's offense looked lost without Fleming inside.  SG Jim McFadden starting to heat up here in the 2nd half

12:55, Up 51-43

SG Dickey Walton getting into the scoring act as well, putting in 12 of his 14 pts here in the 2nd half.  We're in the penalty, and STAN has taken the lion's share of FT attempts

5:43, Up 68-58

We had an answer for every made FG by STAN.  When STAN committed 2 consecutive turnovers, we capitalized on both of them.  Lead was 17 with 2 mins remaining.  We got ourselves an important win in our conference schedule

Final Score: Stanford - 68, UCLA - 85

  • Key Players: Sr C Keith Reeder 8.6 ppg, 5.2 rpg
  • Notes: We won by 26 (home) in our 1st meeting.  SCAL shooting just 28.9% 3PT for the season

1st Half

Big disparity in shooting performance.  And we'er not giving too much 2nd chance opportunities for SCAL

Halftime: Up 44-19

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 56%, SCAL 31%
  • TOs: UCLA 3, SCAL 10

Key Players

  • UCLA: C Anthony Burton 10 pts, 5-5 FG

2nd Half

SCAL giving their fans something to cheer about, when they opened the 1st half with a 12-0 to cut their deficit to just 13.  Took more than 6 mins before we finally scored.  We regrouped, SG Jim McFadden hitting a couple of shots, and we got our lead back to a more comfortable gap

11:00, Up 53-32

SCAL never came close after their initial spurt earlier.  Used the remaining to try out different combinations.  PF Julian Irvin showed a variety of offensive arsenal, including hitting a couple of 3s.  Walk on C Larry Roberts almost a double double

  • Key Players: Sr SF Michael Davis 20.3 ppg, 6.9 rpg
  • Notes: The best rebounding team in the conference, with 37.1 rpg (#5 Nat'l)

1st Half

WASH able to kepp close early, but when its time for the respective teams' 2nd unit to play, that is when we created some separation.  WASH also had no 2nd chance opportunities

Halftime: Up 37-27

Key stat(s)

  • Bench: UCLA 19, WASH 6
  • Off Rebs: UCLA 3, WASH 0

Key Players

2nd Half

Our defense went into lock down mode early in the 2nd half.  Took almost 7 mins before WASH finally scored a FG.  We led by as many as 23.  WASH chopped off a big chunk of that lead with their 3pt shooting

7:15, Up 60-49

Our offense suddenly looking disorganized out there

3:49, Up 61-54

PG Emeka Dixon's 3 earlier was badly needed.  Both teams in the penalty

1:22, Up 65-58

WASH forced to give up fouls to stop the clock, otherwise we would be content with wasting time.  We shot 7-8 FT to ice the game.  Gallant effort for WASH in trying to come back after trailing by a big margin

Career Game #366

Feb 6, 2011: #9 UCLA (19-4, 11-1) @ Arizona St (9-12, 4-8)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, princeton
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Fr C Jeremy Piper 11.0 ppg, 5.2 rpg
  • Notes: We beat AZST in our previous meeting, where we scored 53 pts in the 1st half, on the way to a 21 pt win

1st Half

It's a match up between our inside attacks vs AZST's outside shooting, withboth teams finding success on their own strategies.  We need to force more turnovers on AZST.  I am hoping this game will not boil down to FT shooting; we have missed 8 of 9 FTs already!

Halftime: Up 39-36

Key stat(s)

  • Paint: UCLA 30, AZST 12
  • TOs: UCLA 5, AZST 3

Key Players

  • UCLA: C Chris Condill 12 pts, 6-6 FG

2nd Half

A 12-2 run by AZST to start the 2nd half.  Foul calls have not been kind to us.  We came back slowly after being down by 7
11:17, Tied at 52

Our defense has definitely improved after that initial salvo by AZST earlier.  We just nee to minimize our turnovers; 7 already here in the 2nd half.  Both teams in the penalty
6:01, Up 62-57

SF Dave Fuhs having a good game, scoring 4 of our last 6 pts, and keep AZST at bay
2:48, 68-62

AZST scored.  Down 4.  We had 2 unsuccessful possesions, before PG Emeka Dixon got fouled and hit 2 FTs.  Up 6.  AZST scores quickly.  Up 4.  Dixon with a jump shot and it's good!  TImeout AZST
0:51, Up 72-66

AZST missed their next 3 shots from beyond the arc.  Had stretches when our defense wasn't at its best, but I'm glad to pull off the win

Final Score: UCLA - 74, Arizona St - 66
