2nd Half

Not the usual OR team the past couple years, and it's clear they are in a rebuilding mode.  OR's PG Mario Smith with a game high 26 pts, but it will take more than a good performance by 1 player to match up against us.

  • Key Players: Sr SG Dean Barnes 11.3 ppg
  • Notes: CAL ranks last in assists in the conference, just 13.1 apg

1st Half

Relatively low scoring game.  We didn't get too many chances to run the break, because of CAL's good ball handling.  CAL also hit 4 3s to keep themselves within striking distance

Unexpected production from PG Brent Green, who added 8 more pts for his game total of 14.  It was a 13-2 run to start the 2nd half

16:29, Up 49-33

CAL staying close, and managed to make a small run to reduce their deficit down to single digits

5:54, Up 58-50

C Andrea Martin scored 5 of our next 7 pts.  SG Ronnie Peppers buries a 3, and we scored on the break.  We pushed our lead back up to 16 with 2 mins remaining, enough gap to hold on for the win.

Career Game #260

Feb 6, 2008: Oregon St (6-15, 3-9) @ #2 Washington (23-1, 12-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, good deal of freedom, triangle
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Fr SG Darcel Nelson 15.0 ppg
  • Notes: Bet them by 22 in our 1st meeting, in a game where we dominated the boards 43 to 28.  ORST 0-12 on the road this season.  Nelson is slightly injured, and is a game-time decision whether he'll play

1st Half

ORST's SG Darcel Nelson won't play today.  Without their leading scorer, it was no surprise that ORST struggled with their offense.  But so did we.  Without C Andrea Martin's inside baskets, we might have been trailing after the 1st half

Halftime: Up 26-22

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 31%, ORST 47%
  • TOs: WASH 6, ORST 16

Key Players

  • WASH: C Andrea martin 10 pts, 3 rebs
  • ORST: PG Brendan Cox 11 pts

2nd Half

The low scores obviously favoring ORST, who even pulled to within 1.  We scored some pts off turnovers to give us a more comfortable lead, but game is far from over

10:45, Up 45-32

SG Ronnie Peppers, who had had a shooting slump in this game, connected on his next 3 shots including a coupe from downtown.  We extended our lead to 18.  SG Ronnie Peppers continues to pour in the pts, and he has found the right time to wax hot.  ORST does not have the offensive capabilities to overcome a big deficit

Final Score: Oregon St - 49, Washington - 75

Career Game #261

Feb 9, 2008: #2 Washington (24-1, 13-0) @ USC (15-7, 9-4)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, 5 out
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: So SF Michael Holmes 16.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg
  • Notes: Beat them by 20 at home.  SCAL looking to cement their place in the NCAA tournament
  •

1st Half

A very inspired SCAL team in the 1st half, scorching us with outside bombs.  On the other hand, we can't buy a basket, and even missed 7 FTs

Halftime: Down 30-42

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: WASH 1-9, SCAL 7-15
  • Rebs: WASH 14, SCAL 14

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Ronnie Peppers 8 pts
  • SCAL: SF Michael Holmes 17 pts, 3 3s

2nd Half

Trailed by as many as 14.  We can't make a big run because our usual gunners are missing a lot of shots, but we're still slowly climbing our way back

11:23, Down 46-52

Still can't make shots consistently.  SG Ronnie Peppers and SF Lawrence Fox have a combined 5-26 FG

6:18, Down 54-61

Staring at a double digit deficit again with 5 mins remaining.  C Andrea Martin made 2 inside baskets.  Down 7.  After a stop, we had a chance to cut our lead further, but SF Darius Chatman traveled

2:57, Down 60-67

We get the ball back with a steal.  C Shamel Anderson scores inside.  Down 5.  Another steal.  We scored on transition!  Down 3.  2nd consecutive steal by SF Darius Chatman.  Went back to Anderson, but he missed inside.  SCAL with the ball.  Foul called.  We're in the penalty.  SCAL missed the front end.  But they get the offensive rebound.  Another foul.  Split.  We finally secure possession.  Timeout

1:42, Down 64-68

Bad pass by PG Brent Green.  Wasted opportunity.  SG Winston Waldon gets a steal.  Outlet to C Andrea Martin, and Martin scores!  Down 2.  Anotehr turnover by SCAL.  Timeout

0:58, Down 66-68

Drive by SG Winston Waldon drives.  Missed, but got fouled.  Waldon makes the 1st, but missed the 2nd.  We were going 11-11 FT in the 2nd half, and that was our 1st miss.  Down 1,  SCAL having trouble getting an open look.  They throw the ball away!  Timeout

0:23, Down 67-68

Foul called on SCAL.  SG Winston Waldon goes to the line for a 1-and-1 for a chance to get the lead.  Waldon has shot 2-4 FT so far.  Makes the 1st.  Miossed the 2nd!  Damn.  SCAL with the rebound.  They are not calling a timeout.  0:15 left.  They couldn't get the ball to SF Michael Holmes.  SG Antuan Wilson forced to take a contested jumper against a double team.  Missed.  We go to OT!

End of Regulation: Tied at 68

SCAL with an inside basket.  Down 2.  SG Ronnie Peppers gets the pass.  Peppers was not on the floor during the final minutes of regulation, but gets the start here at OT.  Peppers fires a 3.  It's good!  Up 1.  That is Peppers 1st 3pt shot, after missing his previous 9 attempts.  A steal by Peppers, and he scores on the easy layup!  Up 3.  A steal by Chatman, and Chatman scores!

4:01, Up 75-70

SCAL missed inside.  PG Brent Green missed a 3.  SCAL also missed a 3.  SF Darius Chatman drives.  Missed.  SCAL's SG Antuan Wilson, who missed a potential game winner in regulation, hits a 3 this time.  SCAL with 10 3s in the game.  Up 2.  SG Ronnie Peppers tries to answer back.  Missed.  SCAL with a turnover.

I put back in SF Lawrence Fox who has been sitting on the bench for quite some time.  Fox, a Norton award quarter finalist, has had a miserable game so far; just 4 pts on 1-13 FG.  But you can't put a good player down.  Fox asked for the ball, gets the pass, drives, and scores!   Up 4.  SCAL not yet out, and they score on a drive.  Up 2.  SG Ronnie Peppers shoots a corner 3.  Missed,  SCAL with the rebound.  SCAL missing a 3.  Timeout

1:09, Up 77-75

Foul on SCAL.  PG Brent Green made 2 pressure FTs.  Timeout SCAL

0:56, Up 79-75

I inserted back SF Darius Chatman.  And Chatman immediately making an impact, who gets his 6th steal of the game, and Chatman scored on an uncontested layup.  Another timeout for SCAL.

0:49, Up 81-75

SCAL safely brought the ball to their front court.  But SCAL missed on their next shot.  We get the rebound.  No need to hurry.  SCAL gave up a foul.  PG Brent Green heads back to the line.  Green made both to give us a 3 possession lead.  Another turnover by SCAL.  That should do it.  What a game.  SCAL had us on the ropes early in the 2nd half, but we didn't quit.  It was a test of character, something that we need once we go to the NCAA tournament

Final Score: Washington - 87, USC - 75

Norton Update

  • SF Lawrence Fox has been named as semifinalist for the Norton award (rank #17).  Highly unlikely that Fox will make it to the All-American teams, but he's my 1st player to go this far since I 1st came to WASH

Career Game #263

Feb 16, 2008: #2 Washington (26-1, 15-0) @ #4 Stanford (23-2, 14-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, shuffle
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Fr SG Eric Hare 24.3 ppg
  • Notes: A highly anticipated rematch.  According to the recent bubble watch, both teams could potentially get a (1) seed in the NCAA tournament.  We protected our home court during our 1st meeting, 78-56.  Hare had 23 pts (7 3s) in that game, but no else from STAN scored in double figures

1st Half

It was a series of small runs, ties (11), and lead changes (13) for the most part of the 2nd half.  Until the last 4 minutes of the game when we were able to disrupt STAN's offense, and came up with plenty of steals.  Trailing 32-33, we finished the 1st half with a debilitating 19-2 run to silence their home crowd.  We minimized our 3PT shots in the 1st half, as we wanted to attack the rim at all cost, and shoot more FTs

Halftime: Up 51-35

Key stat(s)

  • TOs: WASH 6, STAN 15
  • FTs: WASH 17-18, STAN 6-9

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Darius Chatman 16 pts, 5 stls
  • STAN: SG Eric Hare 8 pts, 2 3s

2nd Half

We extended our lead to 21.  We have successfully stopped any small rally that STAN started.  SF Darius Chatman seems to perform when the stakes are at its highest.  Chatman was all over the court today, either slicing the defense of STAN, and hounding STAN's perimeter players to pick up numerous steals.  Chatman was the NCAA finals player of the game last season.  SG Eric Hare top scored for STAN with 16 pts, but clearly was bothered by our defense, shooting just 5-20 FG

Final Score: Washington - 81, Stanford - 62

  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Fr C Jon Hampton 15.7 ppg, 5.2 rpg
  • Notes: We beat them by 24 in our 1st meeting; we shot 12-25 3PT in that game.  WASHST on a 3-game losing skid, giving up 84 opp ppg during that stretch

Injury

  • C Shamel Anderson out for 2 more days with a sore calf.  He won't play today

1st Half

WASHST limited their turnovers to effectively take away our running game.  We again attacked the rim more, and it resulted to more FT opportunities for us

WASHST limited their turnovers to effectively take away our running game.  We again attacked the rim more, and it resulted to more FT opportunities for us

Halftime: Up 45-25

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 48%, WASHST 41%
  • FTs: WASH 14-14, WASHST 5-6

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Darius Chatman 15 pts, 3 stls

2nd Half

Coasted along in the 2nd half.  WASHST momentarily made some noise, cutting our lead to 12 with 5 mins remaining, but that was as far as they could go,

Final Score: Washington St - 60, Washington St - 85

  • (+): A good performance for C Andrea Martin, something that we would need out of him when our future opponents will focus their defense on our perimeter scorers during the NCAA tournament.  Martin scored most of his points on put backs and low post plays
  • (-): Slight improvement on outside shooting, going for 5-17 3PT (29%), but still below where we want it to be

The 2nd unit extended the lead to 8.  But AZST kept it close, and their last "5-pt play" (basket+foul; missed FT, put back+foul+made FT) ties the game.  Timeout

3:59, Tied at 55

C Shamel Anderson, who missed the last game due to an injury, scored 2 FTs; Anderson has a double double.  Up 2.  Turnover by AZST.  We missed a shot.  Teams trading missed shots.  We turned the ball over on the last play.  Score has been frozen for almost 3 mins.  AZST ties the game with a jumper

SF Darius Chatman comes up with a steal, and Chatman with an easy layup.  That should do it.  Game should have been easier, but was a confidence boosting win esp for the reserves

  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Fr PG Marlo Smith 17.0 ppg
  • Notes: Beat them at our only meeting, 93-69

1st Half

What a poor 1st half.  Not only we're not making shots and committing turnovers, defense has been flat

11:13, Up 59-42

We took the fight out of OR with that huge run.  We scored 53 pts in the 2nd half

Career Game #267

Pac 12 Tournament Semifinals

Mar 8, 2008: (5) Arizona (15-14, 10-8) vs (1) #2 Washington (30-1, 18-0)

Current Streaks

  • 27-game win streak
  • 4-game Pac 12 tournament win streak (defending champs)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, motion
  • Defense: 2-3, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: So SG Doug Whitworth 18.0 ppg
  • Notes: Beat them them by 33 in our previous meeting; we scored 33 fast break pts in  that game

1st Half

Another shaky start.  We had to adjust our defense early because of ARIZ's outside shooting.  If not for the 18 pts scored by our reserves, we would have been in a deep hole now

Halftime: Down 33-36

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 43%, ARIZ 54%

Key Players

  • WASH: SG WInston Waldon 7 pts
  • ARIZ: C Luke Rivers 12 pts

2nd Half

We couldn't make a good run because ARIZ continues to shoot well; they are now at 59% FG

6:20, Down 59-65

SG Ronnie Peppers scored our next 5 pts.  ARIZ taking advantage of our penalty situation and keeps their scoreboard running from the line

3:11, Down 64-69

C Shamel Anderson gets one down low.  Down 3.  A turnover by ARIZ.  ARIZ comes up with a good block.  But ARIZ missed on the other end.  They fouled PG Brent Green on the act.  Green, normally a reliable FT shooter, splits his charities.  But we get the offensive rebound.  Timeout

1:14, Down 67-69

We go back to C Shamel Anderson on the post.  But this time Anderson missed.  ARIZ must be thinking of a 2-for-1, hurriedly takes a shot.  Missed.  Timeout

0:44, Down 67-69

SG Ronnie Peppers missed a potential go ahead 3.  ARIZ with the rebound.  We foul quickly.  ARIZ hits both FTs.  Timeout

0:31, Down 67-71

We put in a 3 pt shooters.  We missed a 3.  Gave up another foul.  ARIZ hits both.  Down 6.  SG Ronnie Peppers hits a quick 3.  Down 3.  0:05 left.  SG Ronnie Peppers steals the ball.  Still has a chance but we have to put up a shot quickly.  Peppers launches another 3.  Missed.  Game over.

How this loss affects our chance for a (1) seed in the NCAA tournament, is anybody's guess.  I am more concerned about our performance today, and hoping it will not carry over to the tournament

Final Score: Arizona - 73, Washington - 70

Career Game #268

2008 NCAA Tournament 2nd Round

Mar 16, 2008: (16) Hampton (15-16, 7-7) vs (1) #2 Washington (30-2, 18-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense:
  • Defense:
  • Key Players: So SG Matt Rucker 11.8 ppg
  • Notes: A decent offense, at 69.0 ppg

How they got here

  • Automatic selection (Champs, NEC tournament)
  • (1st Rd) Def Vermont, 70-58 (Bench 38 pts)

1st Half

Trailed early at 8-14.  This game is no joke.  It a 15-5 run for us to get the lead.  But HAMP wasn't done yet, keeping themselves close, and even retook a 3 pt lead.  Game was last tied at 30 all, before we came up with a 12-4 run in the last 3 mins of the 1st half, to finally create some separation

Halftime: Up 42-34

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 59%, HAMP 54%
  • TOs: WASH 4, HAMP 10

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Lawrence Fox 14 pts, 4 3s
  • HAMP: SG Matt Rucker 10 pts, 4-4 FG

2nd Half

Better start, esp on defense.  HAMP shooting just 3-10 FG and 7 turnovers so far in the 2nd half
11:04, Up 57-40

Pulled out my starters with less than 3 mins remaining, leading by 22.  The final score may indicate a blow out, but we had to work hard in the 1st half to earn this.

  • (2nd Rd) Def Miami (FL), 56-41 (Bennett 17 pts, 6 rebs)

Injuries

  • C Carlin Bogans out for 5 days with a sore shoulder, and will not play today.  That leaves us a bit thin on our front court rotation

1st Half

Got the good start we wanted, and led 13-0.  STJO(PA) momentarily came back to cut their deficit to 3, but their numerous turnovers slowed them down the rest of the 1st half.

Career Game #270

2008 NCAA Tournament East Regionals Semifinals (Sweet 16)

Mar 23, 2008: (4) #15 Villanova (24-9, 11-5) vs (1) #2 Washington (32-2, 18-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, outside, good deal of freedom, triangle
  • Defense: 1-3-1, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr C Shahar Thomas 17.4 ppg, 10.7 rpg (#1 Nat'l), 2.1 bpg
  • Notes: NOVA averaging 30 pts in the paint per game here in the tournament.  For the season, they force their opponents to 18.3 topg (#7 Nat'l)

How they got here

  • At-large selection (4th place, Big East regular season)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Drexel, 68-56 (Thomas 20 pts, 6 blks)
  • (3rd Rd) Def #21 Georgia, 84-76 (Thomas 18 pts, 8 rebs)

1st Half

Got off to a 14-2 lead.  Defensively, we did a good job of denying the ball to NOVA's C Shahar Thomas, who only has 6 pts on 2-3 FG.  Our gamble of forcing NOVA to shoot from perimeter paid off initially, when they missed their 1st 8 attempts from 3.  But NOVA started to wax hot from the outside towards the end of the 1st half, and made 3 of their next 4 from downtown.  We missed at least shots from point blank range, which might haunt us if this game goes down the wire.

Halftime: Up 34-31

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 37%, NOVA 39%
  • Fast break: WASH 8, NOVA 11

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Ronnie Peppers 8 pts, 3 stls, 2 3s
  • NOVA: C Shahar Thomas 6 pts, 8 rebs

2nd Half

The keys here in the 2nd half is to play better transition defense, and box our C Shahar Thomas.

NOVA turned the ball over 4 times on their 1st 7 possessions.  SG Robbie Peppers has hit 3 triples early in the 2nd half, to help us open up a more comfortable lead

15:47, 51-35

SF Darius Chatman did his thing on defense, who picked at point in the 2nd half, picked up 4 consecutive steals.  Lead was 21 with 8 mins left, and we cruised our way until the final buzzer.  NOVA's C Shahar Thomas had a double double with 12 pts and 12 rebs, but he didn't get enough touches on offense (4-7 FG)

Final Score: Villanova - 61, Washington - 80

Box Scores

Chatman 19, 4, 0, 7 stls (*)
Peppers 17, 5, 1, 4 stls, 4 3s

Team Stats

FG: 42-42%

Rebs: -4

Asts: Even

TOs: -14

Pts in paint: +10

2nd chance: -2

Fast break: -1

Post game observations

  • (+): Our pressure defense was a primary reason for the win, producing a total of 17 steals.  In 3 tournament games so far, we're averaging 15 spg
  • (-): Missed quite a number of easy shots that we normally make

Career Game #271

2008 NCAA Tournament East Regionals Finals (Elite 8)

Mar 25, 2008: (3) #13 Duke (25-10, 10-6) vs (1) #2 Washington (33-2, 18-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, good deal of freedom, flex
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr SG Andre McBride 17,8 ppg, 5.0 rpg; Fr C Joe Holloway 12.5 ppg, 9.1 rpg, 2.5 bpg (#1 Nat'l)
  • Notes: We lost to DUKE earlier in the season, in the finals of Coaches Classic tournament.  In that game, DUKE limited to just 8 fast break pts.  Transition defense seems to be the specialty of DUKE.  In 3 tournament games so far, they have limited their opponents to just 7 fast break pts per game.

How they got here

  • At-large selection (3rd place, ACC regular season)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Charleston, 78-62 (McBride 23 pts, 9 rebs)
  • (3rd Rd) Def Virginia Tech, 75-58 (Holloway 20 pts, 7 rebs)
  • (Sweet 16) Def #10 Kentucky, 89-68 (Holloway 20 pts, 8 rebs)

1st Half

Not a good sign when we got into penalty early.  We were struggling to make shots.  But things changed when SF Darius Chatman came in, who made immediate impact and took over our offense.  C Carlin Bogans has also made significant contributions off the bench.  But DUKE has many offensive options, with 6 players scoring at least 4 pts each.  Our bench saved us from being in a deep hole.

We need to score more on the break (just 8 fast break pts  in the 1st half).  SG Ronnie Peppers *3 fouls) and SF Lawrence Fox combined for just 5 pts on 2-11 FG; those 2 need to step up in the 2nd half

Halftime: Down 35-38

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: WASH 2-7, DUKE 4-6
  • Bench: WASH 25, DUKE 13

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Darius Chatman 16 pts, 3 rebs
  • DUKE: SG Andre McBride 7 pts, 6 rebs

2nd Half

After picking up just 1 stl in the 1st half, we already have 4 here in the 2nd half.  SF Lawrence Fox starting to heat up, racking up 14 of his 17 pts.  We ended up with 18-6 run at the start of the 2nd half.  SG Ronnie Peppers picked up his 4th foul earlier.

12:14, Up 53-44

DUKE's stars SG Andre McBride and C Joe Holloway trying to put their team on their back; those 2 have combined for 25 pts now,  But we got some clutch baskets to hold off DUKE, while I gave SF Lawrence Fox a short breather.

7:51, Up 61-52

DUKE got into the penalty 1st.  We scored our next 3 pts from the line.  I bring back SF Lawrence Fox and SG Ronnie Peppers (4 fouls)

5:52, Up 64-54

SF Darius Chatman and C Shamel Anderson scoring a basket each.  Our defense has improved here in the 2nd half, esp on the perimeter.  However, SG Ronnie Peppers has fouled out

4:15, Up 68-54

DUKE making a small run.  Timeout before they get any closer.  Both teams in the penalty

2:22, up 70-61

We turned the ball over.  DUKE had 2 shots, both missed, but we got called for a foul on their 2nd attempt.  DUKE hits both.  Up 7.  DUKE on a 9-2 run now.  Another bad pass, and capitalized on the break!  11-2 run by DUKE.  Timeout

1:19, Up 70-65

A miss by SF Lawrence Fox.  Rebound by DUKE.  Timeout DUKE

0:54, Up 70-65

Quick drive by SG Andre McBride.  Missed.  That was good defense by SF Darius Chatman.  We rebounded the ball.  We can burn some clock, but DUKE immediately fouls.  1-and-1 for PG Brent Green.  Green hits both FTs to give us a 3 possession lead.  Timeout DUKE

0:41, Up 72-65

DUKE with a turnover!  Another foul given up by DUKE.  PG Brent Green added 2 more FTs.  Almost impossible for DUKE now.  Timeout DUKE

0:35, Up 74-65

DUKE hits a 3, but it was too late for them.  Still a great game, which was still undecided until the end

We're going back to the Final 4!

Post game observations

  • (+): SF Lawrence Fox with a big 2nd half (16 pts) to get us over the hump, but equally important was SF Darius Chatman who kept us in the game in the 1st half when everyone else were struggling on offense.  Key stat of the game was pts in the paint, where we limited DUKE to just 8.
  • (-): Not able to fully run in transition, scoring just 16 fast break pts.  Opponents; defenses will only get tighter on the final weekend of the season

Career Game #272

2008 NCAA Tournament National Semifinals (Final 4)

Apr 1, 2008: (6) #17 Southern Illinois (26-9, 10-6) vs (1) #2 Washington (34-2, 18-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: slow pace, inside, lots of freedom, shuffle
  • Defense: 2-3, rarely press
  • Key Players: So PF Andre Hall 18.3 ppg, 8.1 rpg; So C Marlo Boythe 6.8 ppg, 7.2 rpg
  • Notes: SILL's personnel fits their style, which is to pound the ball inside to Hall and Boythe, and slow down the game.  This season, their defense metrics include 52.7 opp ppg (#1 Nat'l), 37.0% opp FG (#2), and 30.7% opp 3PT (#14).  In 4 tournament games so far, SILL has given up just 51 opp ppg.  They have also out rebounded their opponents by an average margin of almost +11 per game.

How they got here

  • Automatic selection (Champs, The Valley tournament)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Rhode Island, 70-53 (PG Patrick Miller 17 pts, 4 asts)
  • (3rd Rd) Def #11 St John's, 60-54 (Hall 20 pts, 11 rebs)
  • (Sweet 16) Def #12 Maryland, 63-52 (Boythe 16 pts, 9 rebs)
  • (Elite 8) Def #24 Seton Hall, 53-46 (Hall 18 pts, 8 rebs)

1st Half

We are expecting this to be a grind-it-out game.

It was a disastrous start.  Not only were not shooting the ball well, our transition defense has given up a lot of pts to SILL.  Down by as many as 9 at 11-20.  After a timeout and the introduction of SF Darius Chatman, we started forcing more turnovers, and score easy baskets.  Went on to post a 10-0 run; Chatman with 4 pts and 2 stls during that stretch.
8:30, Up 21-20

Game remained close.  Things started to open up when SILL shifted to m2m defense, giving way to our penetrations esp by SF Lawrence Fox.  Defensively, we have reduced SILL to a jump shooting team, including their big men.  They are hitting some of their jump shots, but that's a risk we can live with.  Overall, except for our poor 3PT shooting, the players are executing our game plan.  It would be much better if we can improve our transition defense

Halftime: Up 35-28

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: WASH 1-12, SILL 0-6
  • TOs: WASH 6, SILL 12
  • Fast break: WASH 15, SILL 12

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Lawrence Fox 10 pts, 5 rebs
  • SILL: C Marlo Boythe 10 pts, 4 rebs, 3 stls

2nd Half

SILL off to a 10-2 run to take the lead; it included 2 from downtown, which now makes my defensive strategies more complicated.  We shot 2 FTs to reclaim the lead, but this is a totally different ball game now, something that suits SILL's style.  Our FG shooting has dropped to 29%.

13:44, Up 39-38

Our outside shooting continues to plummet.  SILL leading by 5.  I'm still trying to find someone who can knock down shots.  In comes Fr SF Michael Davis, who contributed 2 baskets.  SG Ronnie Peppers finally knocks one from deep in our last play, only our 2nd 3 of the game

5:56, Tied at 50

Teams traded a basket and a turnover.  SILL missed a 3 on their last play.  SF Darius Chatman missed on his drive; he's usually money on those penetrations, but SILL's defense has clearly bothered our shots here in the 2nd half.

4:04, Tied at 52

SF Lawrence Fox rejected SILL's PF Andre Hall, and recovers the ball.  Hall has been a non-factor on offense for SILL, 6 pts on 2-11 FG.  This is a crucial possession.  SG Ronnie Peppers takes a 3.  Peppers buries it from behind the arc!  Peppers was 1-9 3PT earlier, but made his last 2 attempts from deep.  Up 3.  SF Darius Chatman gets a steal off our pressure defense.  Chatman missed a dunk, but got fouled.  That would have been a huge basket.  Chatman heads to the line.  Chatman makes both FTs.

2:53, Up 57-52

SILL missed.  But C Marlo Boythe with the offensive rebound.  SILL resets their play.  SILL's PG Damon Childs puts up a jumper.  It's good!  Childs with a game-high 21 pts, and has been a thorn for us here in the 2nd half.  Timeout

2:30, Up 57-54

SG Ronnie Peppers with a bad pass, his 5th turnover of the game.  SILL's PF Andre Hall takes a jumper.  Missed; Hall shooting 2-12 FG so far.  We get the rebound.  Foul called on SILL.  They get into penalty.  1-and-1 for SF Darius Chatman, who made 2 for 2 FTs in his earlier trip.  Chatman makes both again; those were pressure-packed FTs.

1:36, Up 59-54

C Andre Martin called for a foul.  Only our 4th team foul.  1:23 left.  We can use our fouls to our advantage.  We foul again.  SILL's SG Patrick Miller just waved his arms and threw the ball away, certainly not in the direction of the basket.  Refs say it's in the act of shooting!  I can't believe the call.  2 Fts for Miller.  Miller missed the 1st.  Makes the 2nd.  Timeout

1:06, Up 59-55

C Shamel Anderson missed from down low.  SILL gets the rebound.  I wished we could have used some clock.  Timeout SILL

0:50, Up 59-55

SILL's SF Matt Cleaves frees himself up for a 3.  We're planning to foul, but couldn't get to him in time.  Cleaves the big 3!  We screwed up our last 2 defensive possessions.  Timeout

0:39, Up 59-58

We're wisely using up the clock.  0:09 game clock, 0:05 shot clock.  SILL still not fouling.  C Andrea Martin on top of the key.  Certainly not on Martin's range.  Martin forced a bad pass which went outside.  Oh my goodness.  Timeout SILL

0:07, Up 59-58

We wisely gave up a foul on the back court.  Only our 6th team foul.  3 secs were chopped off.  0:04 left.  Now we don't have any fouls to give.  We press m2m.  SILL having a hard time to bring the ball.  Ball got loose.  Time expired.  We escape!  What a tough game.  We scored only 24 pts in the 2nd half, but able to hang in there.

We're playing for back-to-back titles!

MEM vs WASH

  • Media Poll: MEM #1, WASH #2
  • Coaches Poll: MEM #2, WASH #3
  • RPI: MEM #3, WASH #4
  • NCAA Seed: MEM (2), WASH (1)

There's no clear line which team is better.  Rankings indicate MEM is the better team.  On the other hand, the NCAA selection committee gave us the #1 overall seed, and even relegated MEM to just a (2) seed.

The upcoming national title game will settle all debates

Career Game #273

2008 NCAA Tournament National Finals

Apr 3, 2008: (2) #1 Memphis (31-4, 16-2) vs  (1) #2 Washington (35-2, 18-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, focus on freedom, 5 out
  • Defense: m2m, presses half of the time
  • Key Players: So SF Eugene Cummings 18.1 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.0 spg; Fr SF Jason Bell 12.8 ppg, 6.8 rpg
  • Notes: MEM also an elite defensive team, limiting their opponents to just 57.4 ppg (#4 Nat'l)and 39.0% FG (#12).  But unlike SILL whom we faced in the last round, MEM is also a good offensive team at 71.1 ppg, with 4 players averaging in double figures.  However, MEM rarely shoots from beyond the arc, averaging just 7.3 attempts (6th fewest Nat'l)

How they got here

  • At-large selection (1st place, CUSA regular season)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Cal St Northridge, 70-55 (Cummings 23 pts, 5 rebs)
  • (3rd Rd) Def Minnesota, 80-54 (Cummings 24 pts, 6 rebs; all starters in double figures)
  • (Sweet 16) Def #14 Arkansas, 44-41 (Cummings 15 pts, 7 rebs)
  • (Elite 8) Def #9 Florida, 78-71 (Cummings 23 pts, 8 rebs)
  • (Final 4) Def #7 UNLV, 66-59 (Cummings 16 pts, 7 rebs)

Tournament averages (comparison)

  • Pts For: WASH 76, MEM 68
  • Pts Opp: WASH 59, MEM 56
  • Rebs: WASH 32, MEM 32
  • TOs: WASH 10.6, MEM 12.6
  • 3PT: WASH 29-92 (32%), 13-43 (30%)
  • Stls: WASH 13.0, MEM 6.4
  • Blks: WASH 5.2, MEM 4.0

1st Half

We are finding it difficult to scoe against the half court defense of MEM.  2 of our 4 made FGs came in transition, and that's probably the only way we can add more pts.  Defensively, we are aware that MEM does not like to shoot a lot of 3s, so we are clogging up the lane and forcing them to shoot from the outside.  Both teams with 4 turnovers each

10:58, Up 9-4

Game was last tied at 11.  Since then, we outscored MEM 27 to 6 the rest of the 1st half,  We were getting steals and scoring easy baskets.  When we're not running the break, we were attacking the rim, and getting to the FT line.  MEM's SF Eugene Cummings, who is averaging 20 ppg in this tournament, has been held scoreless so far.

We executed exactly our game plan in the 1st 20 mins.  But anything can still happen in the next 20.  No time to relax

Halftime: Up 38-17

Key stat(s)

  • Stls: WASH 10, MEM 2
  • Fast break: WASH 16, MEM 4
  • 3PT: WASH 3-9, MEM 0-6

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Ronnie Peppers 16 pts, 6 stls, 2 3s
  • MEM: SF Jason Bell 13 pts, 6 rebs

2nd Half

After MEM scored the 1st basket of the 2nd half, we went on a 10-0 run to further increase our lead.  Furthermore, MEM's SF Jason Bell picked up his 3rd foul and has to sit.  WHy would you sit your most consistent offensive player so far in the game, when you're down big?  What have you got to lose?
17:10, Up 48-19

Fans starting to celebrate.  We can smell the title already.  SG Ronnie Peppers and SF Lawrence Fox, both seniors, making sure there is no monumental collapse on our end; the two has combined for 41 pts.  SG Ronnie Peppers double figures in steals with 10.
7:54, Up 65-33

Just getting the ball across the timeline was already an ordeal for MEM.  They are stunned from the look of their faces.  I pulled out my starters with 3 mins remaining, leading by 35.  They received a standing ovation.  Job well done.  SG Ronnie Peppers with a performance for the ages.  Nobody expected the finals would be lopsided, but we were prepared.  We were in this environment last season, and our experience was clearly demonstrated.

MEM finally made some 3s but it was too late for them.  They are probably relieved when the final buzzer sounded.  SF Eugene Cummings finished with a paltry 6 pts (2-9 FG), while SF Jason Bell did not score in the 2nd half after getting 13 in the 1st.  MEM has an unusual starting lineup of 4 SFs and a PF.  SF Alex Reeder, who is playing the 1, had a horrible game with 16 turnovers in his name.

Back-to-back titles!  It might have looked easy from the outside, but it's true what they say that you feel more pressured defending a title than winning it for the 1st time.
