  1. It’s been over a year since Web Sim Hockey 2 has been launched and they would like to thank everyone for helping them go through this transition period.

You have efficiently assimilated the new features and your suggestions have helped them improve the game concepts when necessary.

After this significant development had been achieved, WebSimHockey decided to go on with the community’s most popular request for the past few years: Web Sim Hockey Mobile .

    Going mobile is a must

The need of a fully responsive website is essential in a world where mobile devices are becoming increasingly popular.

Therefore, after many months of efforts, we are very proud to unveil the details of this change that will improve the navigation on all your devices.

One site for all your devices

Using your cell phone, tablet or PC, you can now choose between “standard” or “mobile” site.

Regular site features (PC and laptops):

    • Main menu is fixed at the top of the screen when you scroll the page down
    • Slight modifications to the site header
    • Content width adapts to your screen resolution
    • Change league by clicking the league logo in the top menu bar

    Mobile site features:

    • Navigation adapted for mobile devices (menus, adapted content)
    • Every feature in every page is now working 100%
    • New chat version embedded in the right column.

Important: Although the site recognizes the right version for you and remembers it, you can still switch versions manually, using the settings icon in the main menu bar.
    Other improvements

    We added other features, including:

      • New information about your finance situation, located in the right column, such as your payroll buffer before a suspension, or with your owner budget.
      • When receiving a chat message, a bubble shows up on the top right corner of your screen with a preview of the message. Click on the message to open the chat box to continue the discussion.
      • Error/Success messages are now always visible at the top
      • Improve the way pictures are displayed in the news feed
      • When a news article is published, the main image is now showing in the news feed
      • You can now sort the cities in priority order during the city draft and election step. After 48hrs, the draft is automatically completed using the list saved by the GMs.

  4. Here is a new game just released March 21st 2014, that has been brought to our attention from our forum member “sportsfan”. This led to us reaching out to the lead developer Stephen Riviere and his company RiviSoft.   Several days ago we shared our Basketball findings about a different Handheld based company InczeTigate. It will be interesting to see how the two games evolve and where they may excel or lag. As with all simulation games, there really isn’t ever an end state and almost everything is a constant work in progress.

We interviewed the game maker Stephen Riviere and below is his take on the fun factor and complexity of the simulation algorithm’s for Hoops Manager Version 1. We were excited to hear that Stephen was a frequent gamer of the Out of the Park Baseball series and Front Page Sports Football and these games inspired him to make his own simulation game.

(GM Games) How realistic is this game to believing you are managing the NBA?

“It is based on NBA reality (as of the beginning of this season), and all the player ratings and details are based on that. It is easy (although a bit time consuming) to edit players and team names so that you can set it up just like the NBA if you want. In fact, it looks like one of our users posted a conversion table people can use to do just that.”

(GM Games) Explain the aspects of being a General Manager in Hoops Manager?

“To explain, if you control a team you are entirely responsible for roster management, meaning you need to draft players, sign free agents, trade players, etc. Additionally, you will need to set your depth chart and player actions for your team (the Strategy page) although the computer can do that for you by pressing the text at the top of that page. Finally, you need to set your training camp focuses each year to drive player development.”

“In the game, you can control any number of teams, with the rest handled by the computer. You do everything a real coach/GM would do, as you try to build a team and implement strategies to make them as good as they can be, all the while dealing with player development (good and bad), drafts, salary cap, bird rights, retirements, trades, etc. During a game (if you choose to play rather than fast sim or sim to watch), you also make substitutions, call time outs, set defenses and offenses, determine coverages, etc. I do believe that this is the type of game that people on your site would enjoy.”

(GM Games) How is Player Evolution in Hoops Manager 2014?

“Player evolution and career mode do exist, and are a core part of the game. Players skills change during the course of the season, in the off season and during training camp. This is a key part of this kind of game (to me at least) as it allows you to really feel the growth (and sad decline) of your players.”

(GM Games) You have a complex Coaching Engine but is there a way to ‘game’ the system?

“My simulation literally plays the game pass by pass, players move around the court, make decisions (if they have the ball, they choose to pass, shoot or drive and if they do not, they choose to move towards the basket, out of the key, to the three point line, etc), and then act them out. As the coach, you can help guide these decisions by getting your guys in positions that suit their skills, along with telling them what to do with/without the ball, giving them a pass to priority, etc. At the end of the day, however, they still make the decisions- just like in real life. I have simmed and played a lot of seasons at this point and am pretty sure there is no way to game it. All you can do is maximize your chances of success by getting alignment between the system, the players and the player settings in concert with understanding your opponents weaknesses. It is actually a lot harder to win then FPS Football was.”

(GM Games) If you do not want to coach, what sim options are available?

“From here, you have a choice. When your team plays, you can choose to fast sim (about 30 seconds, no interaction and you simply watch the scoreboard), sim (much longer, you actually watch the game but the computer makes all the decision but it is based on the settings in your strategy page- same as fast sim), or you actively coach the game, manually do substitutions, strategy changes, etc. For many of my testing time, I simply did fast sim as it using the same algorithms it just does it faster with no user input.”

(GM Games) How accurate or realistic are the statistics generated by Hoops Manager?

“In terms of what I wanted in a game, it is a given that you need a simulation that produces realistic results but I also wanted the hands on aspect of really being able to help drive the results without it being a twitch sports game. I love coaching games in OOTP and that FPS Football was brilliant with their ability to allow you to call plays and really dictate the success of your team on the field. I tried to bring this into Hoops Manager and feel that the myriad of options you have with what each player does as well as the team offense and defense, really does allow to impact the results. After all, if statistical accuracy is all you are looking for, I could make you an excellent Excel spreadsheet!”

(GM Games) What will be your approach in regards to modifying your game?

“In terms of future plans, I do intend to make it easier to mod. It was originally in the project plan, but it turned out that it would have taken a significant amount of new and re-written code to get an easy importation method working, so I scrapped it for now. If the game is popular, I will add it, however, primarily as a way to mass change player names. I am a little hesitant to release the entire player data set, however, is it takes considerable work to put it together. If I do anything regarding changing player ratings, I think I would do it in game instead of allowing people to edit the data set directly, but again we need to see how everything plays out. Finally I originally wanted to allow people to make their own formations instead of sticking with the stock ones I built, and I would like to revisit that as well.”

GM Games has created a forum to chat about the game and share information. We look forward to contributing and seeing the evolution of Hoops Manager. If the simulation engine, coaching and AI is there, this game will be in the spotlight very soon.

  6. One of the most interesting games to have been released on a handheld device has been that of Basketball Dynasty Manager 2014 or otherwise known as DM or Dynasty Manager. It appears the owners of this title are still determining where the branding will end. An NBA license was attempted to be acquired without success thus far. At the moment the game has the same player last names and first name initials. Users in the comments section of iTunes and Facebook page seem to have customized the game to the point where they have changed all the generic labels. Let us get to the details.

    Core Feature Set:

    - The only basketball management simulator for mobile.

    - Edit all players names and ratings and fully customise your experience.

    - Sign players, make trades, and watch your funds.

    - Pickup a star in the draft and change the way your players train and upgrade.

    - Upgrade facilities and invest in selling merchandise.

    - Sign Head coaches, Assistants to help develop your players, and scouts to find new talent.

    - Track players yearly stats, career highs, and much more.

    - Win MVP's, All Stars, Rookie of the year, etc.

    - Scout players from 3000 cities world wide.

    Version 2.0 brings us:

    - New "PERKS"...

  8. Long before Beyond the Sideline (BTS) Football was announced from OOTP Developments and put the football simulation community on notice, there was an initial concept game named 'Football GM'.

The birth of BTS came from these early workings but exactly how far did Francis Cole (Lead Developer) get before joining forces with OOTP Dev's and sharing the news?

From the looks of the video available from the developer's YouTube channel (which GM Games has uploaded to our own channel in case of removal) it looks as if the initial concepts are quite strong. This includes the 2D engine, the statistics available. The UX interface needs some work to look modern but then again, we are talking about a text sim. Many fans still love games like Front Office Football regardless of the bells and whistles.

Let us take a look at what exactly we see in each of the videos:

OOTP Developments today introduced Beyond the Sideline Football, the latest franchise in its ever-growing lineup of sports management games. The game is currently in development by Francis Cole, a former Sports Interactive programmer who worked on Football Manager and who is a lifelong NFL fan.

"I've known Francis since my days working for Sports Interactive," said OOTP Developments co-founder Markus Heinsohn. "He is a tremendously talented programmer who knows American football as well as anyone I've ever met. He has also been working on his own football gaming projects for years. I am convinced that his skills, combined with our experience creating excellent sports management games, will result in an amazing American football game which will bolster our product lineup for years to come."

"Having known Markus from our time at Sports Interactive together, and playing OOTP every year since, I was delighted at the opportunity to bring my football game to OOTP Developments," said Beyond the Sideline lead developer Francis Cole. "Beyond the Sideline will be an amazing American football GM game, thanks to technology such as FaceGen, releasing on PC/Mac/Linux, and having an existing code base that enables players to easily customize their leagues."

Review of Draft Day Sports: College Basketball 2

Coaching in college is a lot of work. But it can also be very rewarding.

Why anybody would choose to coach college sports over professional sports is mind-boggling.

I realize most college coaches would jump at the opportunity to coach in the pros, but there are a handful who choose not to. Those coaches are crazy.

I suppose there is something to be said for being the king of a campus instead of just another pro coach that has a slim chance of lasting more than a few years. But look at how much more work coaching in college is!

  11. We're excited to share the information about the seventh installment of Front Office Football 7 from Solecismic Software, released on December 13, 2013. It is only available through electronic download.

Front Office Football is designed to represent a snapshot of professional football as it exists under the current salary cap system. You play the role of the general manager of a team. In order to succeed in Front Office Football, you need to perform as well as possible in four different areas.

    Team Performance

On the field, your primary goal is winning the coveted Front Office Bowl. Your fans, players and staff all want to see that championship banner raised to a new position in the ring of honor surrounding your stadium.

    Financial Performance

Off the field, your team needs to show a profit, or the owner will become angry and threaten your job. You need to control salary and staff costs while balancing the need to spend money to build and upgrade your stadium against the risk of facing stagnant ticket revenue with an aging arena.

    Roster Value

You need to negotiate contracts, sign free agents, make wise decisions in the amateur draft and outsmart opposing general managers in trade. Building a strong, capable roster...

  18. Kansas City Star Article

Kansas City Newspaper Article of the Replay Game

Professional Football Simulator by Barcode Games was featured this week in the Kansas City Star newspaper.

The sports department, led by Randy Ovitz, contacted BarcodeGames.com to see if PFS could be used to replay playoff games in 1971 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Colts, and again for the Chiefs versus the Dallas Cowboys.

The premise of the article is what might have been for the Chiefs had they not had an early exit in the playoffs that season. Would their team, led by Len Dawson, been good enough to win the Super Bowl.

Thanks to PFS and the historical players that the game universe contains, we were easily able to recreate these games to see what may have happened in January of 1972.

  19. With the 2011 NFL season upon us Fantasy Football is in full swing. Many fantasy football players have a lot in common with fans of text-based sims. There are many different sims for many different sports, such as Professional Football Simulator for football and baseball sims like OOTP.

    nfl_nu03-300x207.jpg

    1985 Bears

With text-based sims you get a similar feel to running a team in Fantasy Football, but instead of waiting week by week for actual results you use a game or sim engine to give those results. The games also allow you to set up leagues that are highly custom in both structure and historical accuracy.

In Fantasy Football you get to control your roster and your starting lineup. You also control roster changes such as trades and free agent pickups. In sim games such as PFS you control much, much more. As a player in a league you would control all of the daily decisions that a team owner, GM, or coach would have to make. Off-season trades and signing, drafting players over multiple seasons, setting lineups each week, and creating game plans are all part of the game. You also get to compete against 10, 20, or many more other owners in your league who are vying for the same free agents, the same division championships and the same bragging rights that you are.

    Curtain_Calls_p59_large.jpg

    Steel Curtain

Another great feature of sim games is the ability to customize your league… imagine running the 1985 Bears, 1960’s Packers, the 1970’s Steelers, the 1980’s 49ers, or the 1990’s Cowboys. PFS includes a way to import these players so that you can recreate these seasons and see how you would do. Would you be a better owner? A more successful coach?

So for those of you who are really enjoying fantasy football this season, I highly encourage you to check out a game such as PFS and see how much fun a text-based sim can be. Play in single player mode and relive all of the glory (or create some new glory!) for your favorite teams of history, or check out an online league for the ultimate in competition.
