Career Game #368

Feb 13, 2011: #8 UCLA (21-4, 13-1) @ Arizona (16-9, 9-5)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, high post
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr SG Mac Henderson (walk on) 15.2 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 3.98 apg
  • Notes: We had a good defensive game against ARIZ in our last meeting, winning 69-58.  ARIZ shot just 32% in that game

1st Half

ARIZ once again is having trouble against our defense, making only 6 made FGs the entire 1st half.  They did however, scored 15 pts from the line.  Great scoring balance with SG Jim McFadden hitting his outside shots, and our big men pounding the paint

Halftime: Up 46-30

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 56%, ARIZ 26%
  • Paint: UCLA 22, OR 6

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Jim McFadden 14 pts

2nd Half

ARIZ not making enough stops in the 2nd half to make a significant run.  A couple of 3s towards the end were a little too late

Final Score: UCLA - 86, Arizona - 74

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, shuffle
  • Defense: m2m, press most of the game

  • Notes: UTAH lost 6 of their last 7 games, averaging only 58 ppg in that span.  We won by 23 in our previous meeting

1st Half

Our turnovers putting us out of synch not just on offense, but also exposing our transition defense

Halftime: Down 27-29

Key stat(s)

  • TOs: UCLA 10, UTAH 7
  • Fast break: UCLA 8, UTAH 12

Key Players

  • UCLA: PF Justin Blevins 7 pts 3 rebs

2nd Half

Ceratinly not one of our better shooting days, so we are turning this game around with our defense and rebounding
11:25, Up 41-33

2 of our key support players, SG Dickey Walton and SF Chris Williams remain scoreless
6:17, Up 45-42

Key baskets by SG Jim McFadden put us up by 7 earlier, before UTAH hits a 3 to get closer.
3:19, Up 52-48

Both teams came up empty on tehir next respective possessions.  SG Jim McFaden got fouled on the act of shooting. McFadden hits both FTs.  Up 6.  UTAH turning the ball over 3 consecutive times.  We scored a transition basket on one of those miscues by UTAH
0:56, Up 56-48

UTAH hit a late 3.  We were able to waste a lot of clock in the end.  A close one.

Career Game #372

Pac 12 tournament

Mar 10, 2011: (9) Arizona St (12-16, 6-12) vs (1) #5 UCLA (25-4, 17-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, princeton
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Fr C Jeremy Piper 11.3 ppg, 5.2 rpg
  • Notes: 2-0 against AZST this season; 2nd game was close though, 74-66

1st Half

Not the kind of defensive start we needed as AZST socred on 7 of its 1st 9 shots.  Both our starting and backup PGs have 3 fouls each.  We eventually settled down on defense, cashing on AZST's turnovers.  Our big men have also made a living inside the paint

Key stat(s)

  • Paint: UCLA 34, AZST 8
  • TOs: UCLA 4, AZST 13

Key Players

  • UCLA: C Anthony Burton 18 pts, 7-8 FG

  • Notes: Davis is slightly injured ut likely to play.  Starting PF Joey Petty out for the season.  Won by 10 in our only meeting in the regular season

1st Half

We got enough outside shots and transition baskets to break WASH's zone defense

Halftime: Up 39-25

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 50%, WASH 33%
  • Fast break: UCLA 16, WASH 4

2nd Half

We're hardly making shots, and WASH slowly coming back

Career Game #374

Pac 12 tournament semifinals

Mar 12, 2011: (2) #11 Stanford (23-6, 14-4) vs (1) #5 UCLA (27-4, 17-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, flex
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Fr PG Mike Fleming 19.2, 6.0 rpg, 5.4 apg, #2 in Norton list
  • Notes: Seems fitting that the 2 best teams meet in the tournament finals. We beat STAN earlier, 85-68, in a game where SG Dickey Walton got his a=career high of 26 pts

1st Half

Highly entertaining 1st half with plenty of scoring.  STAN's offensive rebounds giving us problems early.  When C Chris COndill came in for the 1st time, he provided the needed muscle for us to dominate the paint.  We built up a 15pt lead, but STAN has too many offensive weapons, and they were able to cut half of our lead before the break

Halftime: Up 47-40

Key stat(s)

  • Paint: UCLA 30, STAN 14
  • Fast break: UCLA 14, STAN 8

Key Players

  • UCLA: C Chris COndill 14 pts, 5-5 FG

2nd Half

STAN's PG Mike Fleming a non factor so far, just 5 pts, and sitting on the bench with 4 fouls.  Our defense picking up here in the 2nd half
11:48, Up 65-50

STAN has not done much to close the gap
5:21, Up 78-60

STAN with no answer to our explosive offense today.  Pac 12 Champs!  We may have a shot at a (1) seed in the NCAA tournament

Final Score: Stanford - 71, UCLA - 88

Box Scores
McFadden 20, 6, 4, 2 stls, 5 tos, 2 3s (*)

Scouting Report

  • Offense:
  • Defense:
  • Key Players: So C John Payne 13.7 ppg, 4.5 rpg

How they got here

  • Automatic selection (Champs, Patriot tournament)
  • (1st Rd) Def UC San Diego, 68-60 (Payne 13 pts, 10 rebs)

1st Half

Our defense and rebounding not to the level where I expected us to be.  We found ourselves still trailing by 1 midway in the 2nd half.  We finally put the clamps down, coming up with a 11-0 run, and took control of the game from there.

Good all around game by SG Jim McFadden, plus we got plenty of scoring from our big men

Halftime: Up 40-28

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 55%, LEHIGH 31%
  • Paint: UCLA 28, LEHIGH 10

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Jim McFadden 10 pts, 5 rebs, 3 asts
  • LEHIGH: C Jay Payne 9 pts, 6 rebs

2nd Half

Starting to pull away.  We have dictated this game with our defense
9:04, Up 66-42

Didn't see the need to bring back our starters.

Final Score: Lehigh - 57, UCLA - 84

Career Game #376

2011 NCAA Tournament 3rd Round

Mar 19, 2011: (9) East Carolina (22-9, 15-3) vs (1) #4 UCLA (29-4, 17-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, shuffle
  • Defense:1-3-1, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr PG William Woods 13.8 ppg
  • Notes: ECAR on a hot streak, winning 8 of their last 10 (both losses came against #5 Houston).  ECAR one of the best shooting teams in the country, at 47.3% FG (#14 Nat'l) and 39.6% 3PT.  This team is a dangerous opponent

How they got here

  • At-large selection (2nd place, CUSA regular season)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Washington, 68-60 (Woods 18 pts; ECAR 9-21 3PT)

1st Half

Perimeter defense will be key for us in this game, and so far, we've done a relatively good job against ECAR's outside shooting.  ECAR's PG William Woods scoreless so far.  We have to lessen our turnovers though, as ECAR has gotten off a good number of transition baskets out of our errors

Halftime: Up 34-28

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 46%, ECAR 30%
  • Fast break: UCLA 8, ECAR 10

Key Players

  • UCLA: C Anthony Burton 8 pts, 7 rebs, 2 blks
  • ECAR: PG William Woods 0 pts, 0-3 FG

2nd Half

A succession of errors by ECAR; 6 turnovers already here in the 2nd half so far.  SG Jim McFadden and PG Emeka Dixon also beginning to heat up after a quiet 1st half
10:47, Up 58-44

We are pounding the offensive glass with impunity. to keep ECAR at bay
5:33, Up 69-54

More turnovers for ECAR, but are managing to stay close
1:59, Up 71-58

A 3 by PG William Woods gave ECAR some hope, reducing their lead to 10.  But 2 inside baskets, 1 was from an offensive rebound, and the other out of a low post play, gave us an insurmountable 15 pts lead with less than a minute remaining.  That should do it

On our way to the Sweet 16!

Final Score: East Carolina - 66, UCLA - 76

Box Scores

Blevins 16, 5, 1, 7-7 FG
Dixon 16, 2, 4, 2 stls, 3 tos, 2 3s (*)

Watson 8, 4, 2, 2 stls
Fuhs 2, 1, 1, 2 stls

Team Stats

FG: 43-44%

Rebs: +15

TOs: -3

Mar 24, 2011: (4) #21 Duke (22-9, 14-4) vs (1) #4 UCLA (30-4, 17-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, triangle
  • Defense:m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Fr SG Ashley Zinn 20.1 ppg; Sr C Joe Holloway 11.5 ppg, 10.0 rpg (#4 Nat'l), 2.5 bpg (#4)
  • Notes: In 2 tournament games, DUKE has turned the ball over just 9 times per game.  DUKE's 3PT defense not that good, 37.8% opp 3PT for the season

How they got here

  • At-large selection (2nd place, ACC regular season)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Belmont, 79-69 (Holloway 18 pts, 7 rebs)
  • (3rd Rd) Def VMI, 65-55 (Holloway 14 pts, 9 rebs, 7 blks)

1st Half

We are running plays for our big men to attack inside early, resulting in 2 quick fouls for DUKE's C Joe Holloway.  Without Holloway to man the middle, we had a field day inside the paint, and taking advantage of 2nd chance opportunities.  On the other side, DUKE's jump shots have been on target.  However, their opportunities have been limited because of turnovers

Halftime: Up 47-37

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 49%, DUKE 57%
  • 2nd chance: UCLA 15, DUKE 2
  • TOs: UCLA 5, DUKE 11

Key Players

  • UCLA: C Anthony Burton 14 pts, 8 rebs (7 offensive)
  • DUKE: SG Ashley Zinn 10 pts, 2 3s

2nd Half

We're doing a better job now in contesting shots; DUKE just 5-19 FG in the 2nd half
10:44, Up 62-50

But DUKE has been patient in staying close, and saw the chance to make a run earlier.  Despite all the positive things we have done so far, this is still anybody's game
7:26, Up 64-59

PF Julian Irvin, who was just inserted earlier, scored our last 5 pts, and even came up with a steal
5:36, Up 69-59

SG Jim McFadden now taking over our offense.  We are in the penalty
3:02, Up 75-63

C Anthony Burton has fouled out.  DUKE hits 2 FTs.  Up 10.  We miss.  Another foul on us.  DUKE splits.  Timeout
2:14, Up 75-66

PF Justin Blevins scores inside.  Up 11.  We get a steal and scores on the break.  Up 13.  A turnover by DUKE.  We started to slow down, and wasted away precious seconds.  DUKE not even bothering to foul in the end.

On to the Elite 8!

Final Score: Duke - 69, UCLA - 83

Post game observations

  • (+): Collectively, our big men have done a good job neutralizing DUKE's C Joe Holloway who finished with just 6 pts and 4 rebs, and subsequently we won the battle inside the paint.  It also helped that we shot 16-19 FT (84%)

Career Game #378

2011 NCAA Tournament West Regional Finals (Elite 8)

Mar 26, 2011: (2) #14 Pepperdine (25-6, 13-3) vs (1) #4 UCLA (31-4, 17-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, flex
  • Defense: m2m, press about half the game
  • Key Players: Fr PG Titus Moss 14.5 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 7.6 apg (#1 Nat'l), #3 recruit this season; Fr SG David Howard 14.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg
  • Notes: In 3 tournament games, PEPP has gave up just 51 ppg; it should be noted though that PEPP has yet to face a single-digit seed team until now.

How they got here

  • At-large selection (1st place, WCC regular season)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Hampton, 73-66 (Howard 21 pts)
  • (3rd Rd) Def La Salle, 61-39 (Moss 14 pts, 7 asts, 5 blks)
  • (Sweet 16) Def Minnesota, 51-49 (Bench 26 pts)

1st Half

Slow start on offense.  But eventually our shooting picked up during the latter part of the 1st half, and our big men started contributing as well.  Defensively, we made life difficult for PEPP's freshman guards; PG Titus Moss and SG David Howard combined for just 9 pts on 2-13 FG.  More importantly, we limited Moss to just 1 ast.  Both teams with 9 turnovers each

Halftime: Up 38-25

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 56%, PEPP 30%
  • 3PT: UCLA 1-4, PEPP 1-8

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Jim McFadden 15 pts, 5 rebs
  • PEPP: PG Titus Moss 4 pts, 1-5 FG

2nd Half

Managing to keep our double digit advantage.  A bigger concern though is the foul trouble on our guards
11:58, Up 50-39

Our 4 main guards in our rotation all have 3 or fouls.  If we could somehow hold our fort for a few minutes, we should be ok
7:53, Up 56-44

SG Dickey Walton has fouled out earlier.  We are in the penalty
4:21, Up 57-50

SG Jim McFadden missed a shot.  2 FTs made by PEPP's Titus Moss.  Up 5.  McFadden got blocked on our next play; no foul.  McFadden picked up his 4th foul.  PEPP splits.  Timeout
3:02, Up 57-53

PG Emeka Dixon missing his jumper; Dixon is 0-8 FG today.  PEPP's PG Titus Moss missed, rebound by Moss, another miss by Moss.  We finally get the ball.  We get it inside to C Anthony Burton who powers himself inside and score!  We desperately needed that.  Up 6.  Moss turns it over on the other end!  SG Jim McFadden drives, draws the defense, drops off the short pass to Burton, and Burton scores!  What a nice play by McFadden.  Up 8.  PEPP throws the ball away again!  PEPP with 18 turnovers
1:28, Up 61-53

PG Emeka Dixon with a bad pass; our 15th turnover.  Foul called on us.  PEPP splits.  Timeout
0:59, Up 61-54

PEPP fouls intentionally, and they entered penalty.  PG Emeka Dixon makes 2 FTs, his 1st set of pts today.  Up 9.  All we need to do now is defend their 3.  Their guards can't get a shot, and has to force a 3.  Miss.  Another foul on PEPP, and Dixon makes 2 more FTs.  Up 11.  That should do it.

Final 4!

Final Score: Pepperdine - 54, UCLA - 67

Box Scores

McFadden 19, 11, 1, 4 tos (*)
Burton 14, 6, 0

Post game observations

  • (+): We kept our discipline on defense, and in the end, the inexperience of PEPP's back court buckled down on the pressure against our veteran guards
  • (-): We gave up 16 offensive rebounds, resulting in 14 2nd chance points for PEPP

Career Game #379

2011 NCAA Tournament National Semifinals (Final 4)

Apr 1, 2011: (1) #4 UCLA (32-4, 17-1) vs (4) #15 Gonzaga (27-9, 11-5)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: slow pace, outside, princeton
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Jr SG Vidal Satchell 15.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 45% 3PT; Jr SF Troy Harris 12.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 45% 3PT
  • Notes: An efficient offensive team, shooting 46.7% FG, and committing only 12.1 topg.  While Satchell and Harris gets most of the attention on offense, PG Damon Collier has been playing well so far in the tournament, averaging 10 pts and 6.5 apg

How they got here

  • Automatic selection (Champs, WCC tournament)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Long Beach St, 69-44 (Satchell 14 pts)
  • (3rd Rd) Def #8 Toledo, 72-61 (Satchell 20 pts)
  • (Sweet 16) Def #6 St John's, 69-59 (Collier 19 pts, 4 asts)
  • (Elite 8) Def #5 Houston, 74-65 (Satchell 20 pts, 7-10 FG)

1st Half

ZAGA off to a good start hitting their outside shots.  ZAGA's shooting was very consistent the entire 1st half.  We never had the chance to get a good run, because of ZAGA's transition defense limiting our fast break opportunities.  We need to figure out a way to stop their offense in the 2nd half, and get quick pts ourselves

Halftime: Down 27-36

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 56%, ZAGA 59%
  • Fast break: UCLA 2, ZAGA 4

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Jim McFadden 10 pts, 2 asts
  • PEPP: PG Damon Collier 5 pts, 2 asts

2nd Half

Good news is that we'er making some improvements on defense.  Bad news is ZAGA is playing better defense than us
11:56, Down 38-49

ZAGA's SG Vidal Satchell caught fire from the outside, hitting 4 triples.  PG Damon Collier added another one from deep.  We're in trouble now
7:44, Down 50-67

We just have to do this one stop at a time.  We still have a fighting chance here
4:23, Down 60-69

A crucial turnover and a missed FT somehow slowed our momentum.  A dagger 3 by ZAGA's SF Troy Harris puts them up by 11 with less than 3 mins remaining.  Still down 10 with 2 mins to go.  Had several chances to cut our deficit, but we turned the ball over on consecutive possessions
1:20, Down 63-73

ZAGA wasting time.  We get a steal and scored.  Down 8.  But with time winding down, we had to foul.  SG Jim McFadden picked up his 5th foul, and perhaps the end of his college career.  We had 4 shots on our next possession, and we missed them all.  2 more FTs by ZAGA ended our season.  We kept ourselves most of the time, but that explosion by ZAGA's SG Vidal Satchell was just too much to overcome.  Satchell finished the game with 20 pts and 4 3s.

Still a good season.  Only a few people may have expected us to be this far in only my 2nd year at the program.  We still have a shot next year.  All of our big men are back.  SG Jim McFadden and PG Emeka Dixon are gone, but SG Dickey Walton is ready to take on a bigger role next season.

Final Score: UCLA - 65, Gonzaga - 75

Box Scores

McFadden 19, 2, 3, 2 stls, 2 blks, 6 tos, fouled out

Fuhs 3, 1, 0
