Career Game #294

Injury

  • SG Winston Waldon (21.6 ppg) slightly injured with a sore leg.  He said he can play but I won't force the issue, and just let him rest

Jan 26, 2009: #13 Washington (18-2, 9-0) @ UCLA (6-12, 6-3)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, shuffle
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Jr SG Trey Cleveland 10.1 ppg
  • Notes: PG Al McDonald (13.2 ppg) is injured, so both team's top scorers unavailable today

1st Half

We got off to a good start courtesy of PG Chris Simmons' hot shooting.  Our bench contributed well also.  We led by as many as 19, but our foul trouble allowed UCLA to chop off some of that lead.

  • 3PT: WASH 8-18, UCLA 3-8
  • Fast break: WASH 9, UCLA 4

2nd Half

UCLA starting to shoot better here in the 2nd half

11:55, Up 52-45

We're forcing a lot of contested shots from the outside.  I already told the team to bring the ball more inside.  PG Joey Petty has fouled out

6:59, Up 56-51

We got a couple of clutch FGs earlier to slow down UCLA's uprising

3:10, Up 62-56

We've got to pay solid defense.  We made a stop.  PG Chris Simmons converted a 3pt play opportunity.  Up 9.  UCLA splits their FTs.  Up 8,  UCLA fouls, and they are also in the penalty.  PG Brent Green hits 2 FTs.

2:23, Up 67-57

PG Brent Green has been clutch, scoring a FG and 2 more FTs, to offset the 2 baskets that UCLA scored.  Lead remains at 10 with just over a minute to go.  UCLA scored a 3, but that was the last basket they scored.  We hit 6 more FTs in the end

  • Key Players: So SG Darcel Nelson 15.2 ppg
  • Notes: Has won 3 of their last 4 home games, including against #11 Stanford

1st Half

ORST with a lot more sense of urgency than us.  Not only we turned the ball over 9 times, we have allowed a lot of easy baskets to ORST.  Our advantage in 3pt shooting gave us the lead, but we must improve our defense in the 2nd half

Halftime: Up 42-34

  • Asts: WASH 9, ORST 11
  • 3PT: WASH 5-10, ORST 2-6

Key Players

  • WASH: PG Chris Simmons 8 pts, 2 stls, 2 3s

2nd Half

I challenged my big men to take the ball strong to the basket.  PF Joey Petty has responded with 13 pts on 5-5 FG.

11:45, Up 60-50

Not satisfied with PG Brent Green's performance so far (5 tos), I opted to bring in Fr PG Tim Jones for the 1st time in this game.  Jones and PG Chris Simmons combined to score all of our last 16 pts (8 pts each)

6:47, Up 76-60

ORST putting in their last stand in this game, coming up with an 11-2 run.  We're in the penalty.  Timeout

3:07, Up 78-71

We had 2 unproductive possessions.  On the other hand, ORST scored a FG, and 2 FTs.  Timeout

2:00, Up 78-75

We finally score, on a jumper by SG Winston Waldon.  Up 5.  SF Michael Davis gets a steal.  Outlet to a streaking Waldon, and Waldon scores plus a foul!  Waldon hits the bonus.  Up 8.  C Courtney Whaley fouls out.  ORST splits.  Up 7.  Less than a minute left.  ORSTopted to give up fouls.  We converted 4 FTs, while ORST turned the ball over on consecutive possessions.

  • WASH: PF Joey Petty 8 pts

2nd Half

My halftime talk wasn't friendly, to say the least.  I challenged everyone to show some tenacity on defense, regardless whether they foul out or get exhausted.  The players got my message.  We clawed our way back.  The last 3 by SG Winston Waldon puts us in the lead.  We get another stop.  Tim Jones scored, and capped a 27-7 run.

12:30, Up 67-62

WASHST recovered and took a 4 pt lead, but we scored 5 straight pts to get the lead back.

5:56, Up 77-76

SF Michael Davis scored our next 5 pts, before PF Joey Petty had a successful inside incursion.  Davis gets another steal which he converted to an easy layup.  C Courtney Whaley has fouled out.  Both teams in the penalty

2:48, Up 86-79

After a miss by WASHST, SG Winston Waldon puts up a 3, and we lead by 10.  We slowed down.  WASHST gave up fouls, and we connected on most of our FTs in the end.  We outscored WASHST in the 2nd half, 54 to 27

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, shuffle
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr PG Al McDonald 12.8 ppg
  • Notes: We won our only meeting so far, 77-64, where we limited UCLA to just 8 pts in the paint

1st Half

Both teams struggling to make shots, but our defense was slightly better.  We have to do a better job on securing defensive rebounds

Halftime: Up 32-24

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 46%, UCLA 32%
  • Rebs: WASH 11, UCLA 19

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Winston Waldon 11 pts

2nd Half

UCLA started strong, and even took a 3 pt lead earlier.  UCLA still dominating the offensive glass.

9:35, Tied at 46

We have the right idea of taking the ball strong to the hoop, but we're not making shots consistently.  We're in the penalty

5:44, Up 52-49

PG Brent Green and Chris Simmons each hit a 3 to give us a more comfortable lead

4:31, Up 58-49

We have certainly stepped up our defense the last 8 mins, giving up just 2 made FGs to UCLA

1:31, Up 63-53

UCLA made 3s in each of their last 2 possessions, but they had to give up fouls on the other end to stop the clock.  PG Brent Green making 4 straight FTs

0:33, Up 67-59

UCLA missing their next 3pt attempt.  That should do it

Pac 12 Tournament Semifinals

Mar 8, 2009: (5) Oregon (18-11, 10-8) vs (1) #10 Washington (26-4, 16-2)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, flex
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Fr C Greg Bruton 12.5 ppg, 5.6 rpg
  • Notes: OR on fire in their current 5-game win streak, averaging almost 88 ppg.  We won our only meeting, 80-66; we scored 29 fast break pts in that game

1st Half

Flawless shooting at the start of the 2nd half, allowed us to build a 16 pt lead.  OR then played tough physical defense, and we started missing a lot of shots.  OR's C Greg Burton has been dominating our big men

Halftime: Up 44-38

Key stat(s)

  • Paint: WASH 14, OR 24
  • 3PT: WASH 6-11, OR 0-4

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Winston Waldon 12 pts 5, rebs, 4 asts
  • OR: C Greg Bruton 17 pts, 8-11 FG

2nd Half

We started clogging the lane.  It prevented OR's C Greg Bruton from scoring, but their perimeter players hitting us with perimeter shots.  I have npo choice but to make defensive adjustments again

10:58, Down 55-60

Our turnovers have also been a problem so far here in the 2nd half.  We're in the penalty

7:00, Down 59-68

Cut it down to 6 with less than 3 mins remaining.  But our foul trouble has allowed OR to keep scoring on the line.  Not enough time to complete a rally.  This loss might have cost us a (2) seed in the NCAA tournament

Career Game #305

2009 NCAA Tournament 2nd Round

Mar 17, 2009: (15) TX Pan American (17-14, 5-9) vs (2) #12 Washington (26-5, 16-2)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, high post
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Jr PG Nate Hill 11.4 ppg
  • Notes: TXPA's bench is averaging almost 41 ppg

How they got here

  • Automatic selection (Champs, Great West tournament)

1st Half

Trailed 15-16 midway in the 1st half.  I decided to stay with my 2nd unit the remainder of the 1st half.  Not only did our reserves shot better than our starters, they also played good defense, and we led by as many as 17.  A late run by TXPA cut their deficit to single digits

Halftime: Up 39-30

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 41%, TXPA 37%
  • Rebs: WASH 24, TXPA 18

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Chris Simmons 11 pts, 4 rebs, 3 3s
  • TXPA: PG Nate Hill 8 pts, 2 asts

2nd Half

Tough to put TXPA away because they have improved their shooting and rebounding here in the 2nd half.  We were holding on to just a 5 pt lead earlier, before we went on a 14-4 run
10:23, Up 64-49

Key baskets by our reserves kept TXPA at a safe distance.  Still a 15 pt lead with 5 mins remaining.  TXPA never had the opportunity to make a run after that

Final Score: TX Pan American - 68, Washington - 87

  • (-): Giving up 68 pts is not exactly what I had in mind for an opening match; if we don't improve our defense, we might find ourselves exiting early

Career Game #306

2009 NCAA Tournament 3rd Round

Injury

  • Tim Jones (4.7 ppg) out for 5 dyas with a sore hip

Mar 19, 2009: (10) Oklahoma (16-14, 8-8) vs (2) #12 Washington (27-5, 16-2)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, princeton
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Jr PG Sam Williams 11.5 ppg, 4.0 apg
  • Notes: Balanced team, with 7 players averaging at least 6.0 ppg.  Definitely a tough challenge, even for a (10) seed

How they got here

  • At-large selection (7th place, Big 12 tournament)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Purdue, 64-58 (C Eli Beerbohm 19 pts, 6 rebs; PUR 39% FG)

1st Half

Both teams inconsistent with their outside shots, esp OK.  Most of the scoring is being done inside the paint at both ends of the court.  PF Joey Petty doing well to challenge the interior defense of OK, 9 pts on 4-4 FG.  C Courtney Whaley with 3 fouls, trying to stop OK's C Eli Beerbohm

Halftime: Up 33-29

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: WASH 3-10, OK 0-9
  • Paint: WASH 18, OK 10

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Winston Waldon 14 pts, 3 3s
  • OK: C Eli Beerbohm 12 pts, 5-5 FG

2nd Half

SF Michael Davis, scoreless in the 1st half, has hit 2 triples.  PG Brent Green, with only 2 pts in the 1st half, also connecting twice from downtown.  PF Joey Petty continues to be effective inside with 13 pts.  We took a gamble and decided to challenge OK's outside shooting, hoping to limit C Eli Beerbohm's production.  So far so good, a 19-5 run to start the 2nd half
14:40, Up 52-34

Only 4 FGs so far for OK midway into the 2nd half, while SG Winston Waldon resumed his scoring ways.
9:41, Up 62-38

I took to opportunity to rest some of our key players.  It turned out a window of opportunity that OK is waiting, and they are now making a run.  I called timeout to break momentum, and bring back my starting 5.  This is far from over
5:14, Up 66-53

A clutch hit by SF Michael Davis, who has scored all of his 8 pts here in the 2nd half.  Davis also grabbed an offensive rebound, which turned into a 3pt shot by SG Winston Waldon
3:10, Up 71-55

Still up by 14 with 1 minute left.  I told the guys to slow down.  OK never even bothered to give up fouls, and we were happy to just run the clock away

We're moving on to our 4th straight Sweet 16!

Final Score: Oklahoma - 61, Washington - 75

  • (-): Committed 15 turnovers, and gave up 18 fast break pts to OK

Career Game #307

2009 NCAA Tournament West Regionals Semifinals (Sweet 16)

Mar 24, 2009: (6) Pittsburgh (22-11, 9-7) vs (2) #12 Washington (28-5, 16-2)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, high post
  • Defense: 2-3, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr SG Robert Price 22.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg
  • Notes: One of the best rebounding team, averaging 37.5 rpg (#5 Nat'l).  3 starters are freshmen, which probably explains their measly 12.6 apg (#330) average

How they got here

  • At-large selection (6th place, Big East regular season)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Massachusetts, 63-60 (Price 14 pts)
  • (3rd Rd) Def #18 Ohio St, 65-51 (Price 17 pts, 5 rebs)

1st Half

No matter what happens, our plan is to harass at all times this relatively inexperienced PITT team.  At first, it seems to be not working as we're committing almost the same number of mistakes as PITT.  But it was during the last 4 mins when our efforts starting to pay off, finally getting those steals that lead to easy baskets.  Down 25-27, we finish the 1st half on a 16-4 run.  Before we head to the locker, I had some heated discussions with the refs regarding the discrepancy on fouls.

Halftime: Up 41-31

Key stat(s)

  • Fast break: WASH 18, PITT 6
  • Fouls: WASH 8, PITT 0

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Michael Davis 14 pts, 4 stls, 7-7 FG; SG Winston Waldon 14 pts, 4 3s
  • PITT: SG Robert Price 7 pts, 4 tos

2nd Half

We started the 2nd half on a 9-0 run, and take a commanding 19 pt lead.  Just as when everybody thought PITT is done, they came back with a 13-2 explosion.
11:21, Up 52-44

All I ask for the 2nd unit is to be able to hold the lead as long as possible, before our starters get back to the floor.  The reserves did their job; PG Tim Thomas chipped in all of his 5 pts here in the 2nd half, while SF Pat Canal has 8 pts off the bench.
7:15, Up 59-48

With a well-rested starting unit back on the floor, it was clear which team had more energy
3:31, Up 65-50

SG Winston Waldon answered back a 3 made by PITT earlier.  Still up 15.  We're i the penalty.  Interestingly, PITT has yet to commit a foul even up to this point of the game (37+ mins gone by).  PITT made 2 FTs.  On our nest possession, Waldon buries in another dagger 3, and that could be the finishing blow
1:56, Up 71-55

We slowed down afterwards.  And we're 1 away from another Final 4 appearance!

Final Score: Pittsburgh - 57, Washington - 71

Box Scores

Waldon 26, 3, 2, 6 3s (*)

Career Game #308

2009 NCAA Tournament West Regionals Finals (Elite 8)

Mar 26, 2009: (2) #12 Washington (29-5, 16-2) vs (1) #11 Arkansas (26-5, 13-3)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: slow pace, balanced, 5 out
  • Defense: 2-3, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr SG Jared Butler 30.1 ppg (#1 Nat'l), 4.6 rpg, 42% 3PT (Norton Award last season, best scorer the past 2 seasons)
  • Notes: We go up against the best offensive player in the country.  Their 100-67 win over Kansas in the last round showed how devastating Butler can be when he's in the zone.  But that is just half of our problems.  Aside from being an explosive offensive team, ARK is also one of the best defensive teams; 55.6 opp ppg (#1 Nat'l), 37.4% opp FG (#3)

How they got here

  • At-large selection (1st place, SEC regular season)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Charleston, 61-41 (Butler 36 pts, 10 3s)
  • (3rd Rd) Def North Carolina St, 66-54 (Butler 11 pts, 2 3s)
  • (Sweet 16) Def Kansas, 100-67 (Butler 51 pts, 16 3s)

1st Half

We had initial success in defending ARK's SG Jared Butler but he eventually found his groove.  Nothing separates much both teams.  It is still anybody's game.  The key would be to minimize our turnovers, and not let the other ARK players (other than Butler) make some damage on the offensive end

Halftime: Down 29-35

Key stat(s)

  • TOs: WASH 10, ARK 10
  • 3PT: WASH 5-14, ARK 5-18

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Winston Waldon 12 pts, 3 asts, 2 3s
  • ARK: SG Jared Butler 20 pts, 4 3s

2nd Half

ARK's SG Jared Butler adding 4 more 3s; he now has 8 triples in the game, 32 pts.  Our shooting not able to keep up
11:25, Down 38-52

Our deficit even grew while ARK's SG Jared Butler was on the bench.  Our reign as 2-time defending champs quickly coming to a close
3:35, Down 45-70

Not only we got beaten by a better player, we got beaten by a better team.  ARK's SG Jared Butler finished with 41 pts, 6 rebs, 11 3s!

Still a good season though, considering the revamped lineup we had.  Our rebuilding continues
