Start of Season

Coaches Classic

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, some freedom, triangle
  • Defense: m2m, presses half of the game
  • Key Players: Fr PG Ed Lyday, #1 recruit this season
  • Notes:

1st Half

We outplayed GT in many aspects of the game, but we can't build a big lead.  GT's PG Ed Lyday is very difficult to contain, and we committed a lot of fouls against him

Halftime: Up 41-34

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 48%, GT 32%
  • Stls: WASH 7, GT 1

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Lawrence Fox 9 pts, 4 rebs
  • GT: PG Ed Lyday 14 pts, 3 3s

2nd Half

We got into early penalty once again.  Our starting back court each has 4 fouls.  But SG Winston Waldon has stepped up off the bench, with 13 pts.

11:25, Up 61-47

We have 2 starters already out with 5 fouls.  We had a 17 pt earlier, but GT looks poised to make run.  We are playing just to hold on

3:30, Up 76-61

We somehow were able to manage the clock, and hold on for the win.  NCAA finals hero SF Darius Chatman came up with huge contributions once again, scoring all of his 7 pts down the stretch.  GT is a team to watch out during the NCAA tournament later this season

Final Score: Washington - 81, Georgia Tech - 68

  • (+): We were making our jump shots today, including 9-21 3PT (39%)
  • (-): If there is one thing that worries me about our lineup is the backup PG position.  PG Alex Watson and PG Chris Simmons had to play many minutes because of the foul trouble on PG Brent Green; Watson and Simmons combined for 6 turnovers today.  We committed a total of 24 fouls

  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr PF Phillip Williams 14 pts, 11 rebs in the 1st ga,e
  • Notes: GA defended the perimeter well, forcing their opponent to just 2-22 3PT shooting in their 1st game

1st Half

SG Ronnie Peppers with a good start, scoring our 1st 11 pts of the game.  That set the tone on another good offensive performance

Halftime: Up 45-31

Key Players

2nd Half

For a while, I thought GA's Mike McCullough can shoot his team back into the game, when they came to within 12.  But our defense continuing to force a lot of turnovers on GA, and we are getting much more opportunities to score.

11:16, Up 62-41

The lead gave me an opportunity to play our reserves more.  GA's PG Mike McCullogh had a game-high 24 pts (8 3s), but did not get sufficient contributions from the other players

  • 3PT: WASH 2-11, DUKE 3-6

Early in the penalty again.  We can't get much traction on the defensive end because of our fouls

DUKE extended their lead to 7.  But SF Lawrence continued to carry us here in the 2nd half, and get us back

3:24, Down 59-61

A basket by DUKE plus a foul.  They made the FT.  Down 5.  SG Ronnie Peppers missed a 3.  DUKE also missed.  We get another chance.  Peppers wants to make it up.  peppers fires up another 3.  It's good!  Down 2.  A miss by DUKE.  But Peppers made a bad pass.  We threw that opportunity away.  And DUKE made us pay, by scoring on a put back the other end.  Timeout

1:40, Down 62-66

Another turnover, this time by PG Brent Green.  And then DUKE breaks our press and scores!  Timeout

1:13, Down 62-68

We started taking 3s, plus fouling on the other end.  We missed 3 straight from deep, before SG Ronnie Peppers finally made, but it was too late.  Good effort in trying to come back.  We fell short today.  DUKE with 6 players scoring at least 9 pts each

1st Half

Pleased to see that we are crashing the offensive glass, esp C Shamel Anderson, and getting a lot of 2nd chance opportunities.  We also got our transition game going.  PUR making a game out of this match, by hitting their 3s

Nov 28, 2007: #10 Washington (5-1) @ Wichita St (3-2)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, shuffle
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Fr PG Darrell Fox 15.4 ppg, 4.2 apg
  • Notes: WICH 3-0 at home, scoring 82 ppg

1st Half

We showed our depth in the 1st half.  We still managed to score a lot of pts, despite our season leading scorer SF Lawrence Fox going scoreless.  Our outside bombs are falling in.  Both teams shot 50% FG, but we had way more opportunities to score because of WICH's turnovers

Halftime: Up 47-31

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: WASH 7-15, WICH 4-8
  • Turnovers: WASH 4, WICH 16

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Ronnie Peppers 17 pts, 3 3s

2nd Half

SG Ronnie Peppers scoring in every imaginable way.  But almost going unnoticed is PF Carlin Bogans, contributing 10 pts off the bench

11:46, Up 64-41

WICH must be scratching their heads with this loss.  They shot reasonably well from the field, made 23-23 FTs, and limited our best offensive player to just 2 pts.  And yet, they still lost by a wide margin

Final Score: Washington - 88, Wichita St - 67

Box Scores

Team Stats

FG: 51-46%

Rebs: -2

Asts: +4

TOs: -19

Pts in paint: +28

2nd chance: Even

Fast break: +14

Post game observations

  • (+): Our bench had the same output (44 pts) as our starting unit.  Forced WICH to a whopping 28 turnovers
  • (-): I'm not concerned much on SF Lawrence Fox low output today.  But we have to involve C Andrea Martin on offense more, and not rely too much on our perimeter shots; Martin is averaging just 4.6 ppg so far this season

  • Key Players: Sr C Desmond Jackson 7.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg
  • Notes: OSST not a good shooting team at 37.5% FG and 27.6% 3PT

1st Half

We have defended the perimeter well.  But we committed too many turnovers than what I would have liked, allowing OSST to go toe to toe on us in terms of fast break pts.

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: WASH 4-11, OSST 2-12
  • TOs: WASH 10, OSST 7

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Lawrence Fox 11 pts, 3 rebs

Led by 10 early in the 2nd half.  Looks like we're ready to blow this game away, but OSST suddenly making their outside shots, and has even taken a 3pt lead earlier.  This is turning out to be close match

11:07, Down 51-52

As he as he came in, SG Winston Waldon scored 11 pts as part of an 15-0 run, pushing our lead back to double digits.

6:20, Up 66-52

OSST storming back to cut our lead to 7, but we were able to trade baskets the remainder of the game to hold on for the win.  We got complacent in this game.  Fortunately we woke up just in time, and came up with a nice run earlier

  • Notes: WASHST with a decent recruit in 7'2 Hampton, who will be battling against 7'3 C Andre Martin

1st Half

SG Ronnie Peppers and SF Lawrence Cox engineered a 14-0 run at the start of the game.  WASHST tried to stay close by slowing down their offense focusing on C Jon Hampton.  But when we started forcing turnovers on WASHST, our transition game opened up

AZST somehow successful at the start of trying to slow down the game, and keeping the scores low.  Just as when we were starting to ramp up our scoring and leading by 9, we committed a string of turnovers that led to easy AZST pts.  We had zero fast break pts in the 1st half

Career Game #255

Jan 19, 2008: Arizona (8-8, 5-2) @ #4 Washington (18-1, 7-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, motion
  • Defense: 2-3, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: So SG Doug Whitworth 18.5 ppg
  • Notes: ARIZ losing their last 2 road games, averaging just 46 ppg

1st Half

We made our 1st 2 attempts from deep, but missed 11 of our next 12.  We got a lot of fast break pts towards the end of the 1st half, which is the main reason why we estabnlished a double digit lead

Halftime: Up 35-22

Key stat(s)

  • Fast break: WASH 19, ARIZ 4
  • TOs: WASH 6, ARIZ 13

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Darius Chatman 8 pts, 4 stls

2nd Half

Our 5-12 3PT shooting in the 2nd half considered a big improvement as compared to our performance in the 1st half.  Last season, we blew away a 19 pt lead to ARIZ leading to a sorry loss.  Not this time.  SF Darius Chatman's contribution was felt not just on offense, but also equally on defense.  C Lee Martin with a solid double-double.  ARIZ's SG Doug Whitworth finished with 16 pts, but no other ARIZ player in double figures

Final Score: Arizona - 46, Washington - 79
