Career Game #219

Jan 30, 2007: #13 Oregon (15-7, 6-4) @ #7 Washington (19-2, 8-2)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, flex
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr PF Clinton Tahid 19.7 ppg (#1 Pac 12), 6.2 rpg
  • Notes: OR is conference's best rebounding team with 36.1 rpg (#10 nat'l)

1st Half

A forgettable 1st half performance.  Our defense was not bad, but our offense looked lost

Halftime: Down 23-33

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 29%, OR 36%

Key Players

  • WASH: C Lee Martin 6 pts
  • OR: PF Clinton Tahid 12 pts, 6 rebs

2nd Half

A little bit of improvement on offense, but not enough to counter OR's hot outside shooting here in the 2nd half.  We are being embarrassed here in our home court

11:52, Down 38-55

We were able to cut our deficit down to single digits in the last minute, and there wasn't enough time to run this game around.  We had no answer against OR's PF Clinton Tahid, who exploded with 31 pts and 10 rebs.  Our 3rd loss in the last 4 games.

Final Score: Oregon - 83, Washington - 74

Post game observations

  • (+): Good effort by SG Ronnie Peppers in trying to carry the offense in the 2nd half, but we can't win with efforts coming from 1 player alone esp against a quality team like OR
  • (-): We lost the battle on the boards for the 2nd straight game.  Disappointed on C Andrea Martin; if you're 7'3 and played 25 minutes, getting only 1 defensive rebound is clearly not enough

2 consecutive turnovers by AZST were turned to easy baskets on our end.  Up 14.  We slowed down the game.  Game is closer than what the final score indicated.  We almost slipped up on this one

Good outside shooting by UTAH, but we were able to protect our lead safely the entire 2nd half.  C Andrea Martin made a living exclusively inside the paint, both on offense and defense, and he used his 7'3: frame to his advantage

Career Game #229

2007 Pac 12 Tournament Finals

Mar 8, 2007: (3) #6 Oregon (25-7, 14-4) vs (1) #9 Washington (28-3, 15-3)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, flex
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr PF Clinton Tahid 20.5 ppg, 6.6 rpg
  • Notes: OR riding high with a 10-game win streak, which started with a win against us at our place.  Tahid bulldozed his way to 31 pts and 10 rebs in that game

1st Half

We are determined to put our stamp on defense, using our last home loss to OR as a motivation.  8 steals and 8 blocks are indication of that commitment to defense.  We made life for difficult inside for OR's PF Clinton Tahid, limited to just 6 pts on 1-4 FG

Halftime: Up 41-31

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 43%, OR 20%

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Louvon Davey 9 pts, 2 stls

2nd Half

OR starting to make a push by making their outside shots

9:20, Up 60-48

SG Ronnie Peppers scoring 7 of his 10 pts here in the 2nd half to help keep OR at bay

4:57, Up 73-54

A 3 pt play opportunity converted by PG Brent Green put us ahead by 22.  Let the celebrations begin.  If we can play at this level against top 10 teams, then we could make a surprise in the NCAA tournament

Mar 16, 2006: (14) Monmouth (20-10, 8-6) vs (3) #6 Washington (29-3, 15-3)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: slow pace, balanced, some freedom, flex
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Jr SG Ryan Robinson 12.6 ppg
  • Notes: MON's peaking at the right time, at 71 ppg on their current 5-game win streak

How they got here

  • Automatic selection (Champs NAC)

1st Half

We are simply too strong and too quick.  MON only able to grab their 1st defensive rebound at the 11:54 mark.  Some 3PT shots by MON the only reason why their deficit did not reach 40

Halftime: Up 58-26

Key stat(s)

Key Players

Career Game #231

2007 NCAA Tournament 3rd Round

Mar 18, 2007: (6) #20 Oklahoma (21-9, 12-4) vs (3) #6 Washington (30-3, 15-3)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, princeton
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Fr C Ericson Duckrey 13.5 ppg, 11.4 rpg (#2 Nat'l), 3.2 bpg (#3), #5 recruit this season
  • Notes: Problem for OK is that Duckrey is slightly injured, and is not even sure if he can play

How they got here

  • At-large selection (2nd place, Big 12 regular season)
  • (2nd Rd) Def St John's, 77-75 (Duckrey 23 pts, 15 rebs, 4 blks)

1st Half

OK's Eric Duckrey will play, but clearly not 100%

OK defended relatively well, limiting SG Louvon Davey and SF Lawrence Fox to a combined 2-11 FG.  It was SG Ronnie Peppers who provided firepower off the bench.  OK is keeping this game close with their rebounding

Halftime: Up 36-25

Key stat(s)

  • Rebs: WASH 11, OK, 23

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Ronnie Peppers 11 pts, 3 3s
  • OK: C Ericson Duckrey 4 pts, 7 rebs, 2 blks

2nd Half

We can't seem to shake off this pesky OK team, as they continue to win the rebounding battle.  We are in the penalty.  We are not out in the woods
11:13, Up 48-36

We went with a 3 guard lineup, with both SG Louvon Lavey and SG Ronnie Peppers on the floor.  It helped opened up our gap by speeding up the game, and made our pressure defense more effective.  C Lee Martin has fouled out
7:13, Up 62-43

We were able to hold off OK until the end, despite the numerous FTs they shot in the 2nd half.  Admirable effort by OK's Ericson Duckrey who despite being injured, still came up with 12 pts, 13 rebs, and forced our 2 7-footers to foul out

We're going back to the Sweet 16!

1st Half

Our shooters struggling with their perimeter shots.  We have to go heavy inside in the 2nd half.  Our deficit could have been worse, of not for the 7 missed FTs by MD.  If we can knock down some shots, and minimize our fouls, we can still turn this game around

It was our turn to throw away possessions, and MD promptly coming back

MD's SG Mark Hill hits another 3 to bring his total to 20 pts.  But MD committing more turnovers.  C Shamel Anderson continues to play well, scoring 2 more FGs.
4:11, Up 73-63

The 2 teams exchanging baskets.  We got our lead up to 13.  But MD scored on a 3 on their last play.  Timeout
2:15, Up 80-70

SG Ronnie Peppers hits a 3!  Up 13.  MD missed a 3.  We turned the ball over.  But Peppers came up with a steal off our pressure defense, and scores a layup.  Up 15.  Another missed 3 by MD.  We slowed down.  We move on!  Both teams scored well; we just played a little better on the defensive end, plus our bench delivered.  SF Lawrence Fox was consistent, and PG Brent Green with a career-high in assists

Off to the Elite 8, my personal best so far

How they got here

  • Automatic selection (Champs, Big 12 tournament)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Fresno St, 78-55 (Friend 21 pts, 8 rebs, 15 asts!; Gregory 30 pts, 8 3s)

    • OKST's PG Joel Friend's tournament averages so far in 3 games: 18.0 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 11.0 apg, 4.3 spg

1st Half

We accomplished 2 objectives in teh 1st half.  First is to generate a lot of turnovers on OKST and score easy baskets.  On defense, we figured it would be next to impossible to stop OKST's Joel Friend, so our other objective is to contain the rest of their team.  Friend and SG Buddy Gregory combined for 32 pts; the rest of OKST had only 4 pts

Halftime: Up 37-36

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: WASH 3-8, OKST 6-9
  • TOs: WASH 6, OKST 16

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Louvon Davey 8 pts, 4 stls
  • OKST: PG Joel Friend 23 pts, 6 rebs, 3 asts, 7 tos

2nd Half

SG Louvon Davey has been the centerpiece of our pressure defense, who now has 8 stls.  OKST now with 25 turnovers, 13 by PG Joel Friend.  But despite those stats, Friend and SG Buddy Gregory continues to shoot well from the outside, combining for 48 pts.  I told the team to just keep their focus, and stick to our game plan.
11:39, Up 58-54

Our penalty situation and costly turnovers allowed OKST to take the lead
7:46, Down 64-65

OKST continues to troop to the line.  We managed to stay put, and set up an exciting finish
3:54, Down 73-74

C Andrea Martin comes up with a block, and recovered the ball.  SF Lawrence Fox misses.  OKST rebounds. OKST's SG Buddy Gregory missing a 3.  Timeout
2:56, Down 73-74

SG Louvon Davey missed.  Davey and SF Lawrence Fox has been shooting the ball well today, but came up empty the last 2 plays.  OKST with the ball.  Another miss by OKST.  Fox buries a big 3 and we take the lead!  Up 2.  But OKST's Buddy Gregory answers back also with a 3!  Wow.  Down 1,  We go inside to C Lee Martin,  Martin shoots.  Missed.  Martin gets the offensive rebound.  2nd serving also no good but there was a foul.  Martin makes both.
1:28, Up 78-77

C Andrea Martin gets a steal!  SG Louvon Davey drives.  No good.  But C Lee Martin with another offensive rebound, and scores on the put back!  Timeout OKST
0:51, Up 80-77

OKST's SG Buddy Gregory missing his shot.  OKST's PG Joel Friend has become gun shy the past couple of minutes, perhaps because of fatigue.  We get the rebound.  Timeout
0:36, Up 80-77

We expected OKST to give up a foul.  They did.  1-and-1 for SF Lawrence Fox.  1st trip to the line for Fox today.  Makes the important 1st, assuring us of a 2 possession lead..  Our fans beginning to celebrate.  Not yet.  Fox makes the 2nd also.  Timeout OKST
0:24, Up 82-77

It was not PG Joel Friend taking the 3 for OKST, but SF Shea Calvert.  And Calvert scored his 1st 3 of the game! Timeout
0:12, Up 82-80

OKST not fouling, trying to go for a steal (?)  SF Lawrence Fox puts up a 3 with 1 sec to go, and it even went in!  Questionable defensive decision by OKST, but we'll take it.  What a game.  26 lead changes and 15 ties!  We just made the right plays towards the end.  OKST's PG Joel Friend and SG Buddy Gregory combined for 60 pts and 11 3s.  Friend also had 9 rebs, 6 asts, 2 blks, but committed 13 turnovers

Heading to the Final 4!

Career Game #234

2007 NCAA Tournament National Semifinals (Final 4)

Apr 1, 2007: (2) #7 Iowa (29-5, 16-2) vs  (3) #6 Washington (33-3, 15-3)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, inside, good deal of freedom, motion
  • Defense: 1-3-1, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr SG Rodney Cox 20.0 ppg, 5.3 rpg
  • Notes: Arguably the best defensive in the country; 54.1 opp ppg (#1 Nat'l), 37.8% opp FG (#1), 29.9% opp 3PT (#5), 9.6 spg (#10)

How they got here

  • At-large selection (1st place, Big 10 regular season)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Howard, 76-59 (IOWA bench 42 pts; HOW 41% FG)
  • (3rd Rd) Def Seton Hall, 84-56 (Cox 36 pts, 7 rebs, 7 3s; SH 39% FG)
  • (Sweet 16) Def Pepperdine, 72-59 (Cox 28 pts, 5 rebs, 6 3s; PEPP 37% FG)
  • (Elite 8) Def #9 Houston, 61-46 (Cox 14 pts, 4 rebs; HOU 30% FG)

Injuries

  • SG Ronnie Peppers, out for 3 more days with strained abdominal he suffered during our Elite 8 game

1st Half

IOWA's perimeter defense is very good, so what we're trying to do in the 1st half was to go inside as much as possible.  We were getting the shots we want, but most are not falling.  Defensively, we were able to generate turnovers on IOWA but only converted a few to transition baskets.  Overall, I think we are executing our game plan, and if we can get more easy fast break pts in the 2nd half, we have a chance here

Halftime: Tied at 29

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 29%, IOWA 39%
  • Fast break: WASH 6, IOWA 12

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Lawrence Fox 10 pts, 4 rebs, 2 blks
  • IOWA: C Simon Edwards 7 pts, 9 rebs

2nd Half

A wonderful start.  SG Louvon Davey, who was 0-9 FG in the 1st half, has made 3 shots, including a couple of 3s.  PG Brent Green has added 5 more pts, to put his game total to 11.  C Cory Wethers scored our 1st set of bench pts.  A 17-2 run.  IOWA has yet to make a FG here in the 2nd half
13:40, Up 46-31

Nobody expects IOWA to just roll over.  IOWA's SG Rodney Cox, exploding for 14 of his 17 pts here in the 2nd half, carrying his team back
7:53, Up 53-47

We settled down and created a wider gap with a 12-0 run, punctuated by a 3 each from SF Lawrence Fox and SG Louvon Davey.  Almost there!
3:50, Up 65-47

IOWA scored 6 unanswered, including a 3 by SG Rodney Cox.  Timeout
2:35, Up 65-53

An inside basket by C Andrea Martin to stop IOWA's run.  Up 14.  C Lee Martin comes up with his 3rd blk of the game.  We recover the ball.  PG Brent Green missed a 3, but we used a lot of clock there.
1:26, Up 67-53

Foul called.  No need to do that.  We are in the penalty.  IOWA makes both.  Timeout
1:04, Up 67-55

IOWA needed to give up 6 straight fouls to get into penalty.  PG Brent Green heads to the line.  Green makes both.  Up 14.  Green added 2 more FTs at a later play.  And what a relief when I heard the final buzzer.  It was a great 2nd half performance, and a total team effort.  One more game left!

We're playing for the national title!

Career Game #235

2007 NCAA Tournament National Finals

Apr 3, 2007: (1) #3 Louisville (28-6, 14-2) vs  (3) #6 Washington (34-3, 15-3)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, flex
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr SG Maurice Marvel 16.3 ppg, 5.5 rpg; Jr PF Felipe Perry 13.4 ppg, 7.8 rpg
  • Notes: Unlike our previous 2 opponents whose main scorers were guards, LVILLE is more balanced having 4 players averaging double figures.  LVILLE is also one the best rebounding teams i the country at 37.1 rpg (#4 Nat'l).  LVILLE offensive stats include 76.1 ppg (#7), 16.7 apg (#8), and 40.1% 3PT (#14).

How they got here

1st Half

Cold shooting start at 1-9 FG, including 0-6 3PT.  After trailing 2-10, we settled down on defense, and came up with 12-2 run

11:33, Up 14-12

LVILLE's bench outplaying our 2nd unit.  LVILLE already with 7 offensive rebounds

6:14, Down 18-25

We did a relatively good job of not letting LVILLE get away.  We need to minimize our turnovers; 7 of our turnovers were committed by the bench.  We have 20 minutes to make corrections.  This is still anybody's game

Halftime: Down 24-29

Key stat(s)

  • TOs: WASH 10, LVILLE 8
  • Off Rebs: WASH 2, LVILLE 8

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Lawrence Fox 10 pts, 2 3s
  • LVILLE: SG Maurice Marvel 6 pts, 3 res, 2 stls

2nd Half

Good start defensively, allowing just 1 FG (a 3) for LVILLE
14:36, Tied at 32

Scoring has been a luxury so far.  LVILLE shooting 4-22 3PT, while we're at 2-15.  LVILLE with 9 blks already, but our big men managed to sneak in a couple of inside baskets earlier.
10:23, Up 37-35

LVILLE hit their last 2 attempts from 3.  Not a good sign.  We went down by 1, before SF Darius Chatman scored 7 unanswered pts including a 3.  Chatman has come up with quality minutes off the bench, 11 pts on 5-5 FG.
5:39, Up 49-43

A basket by LVILLE's SG Maurice Marvel (14 pts).  C Andrea martin answers with an inside incursion.  2 FTs made by LVILLE's PF Felipe Perry (9 pts, 13 rebs, 6 blks).  We got LVILLE into penalty, and SG Louvon Davey scores 2 FTs also
4:27, Up 53-47

LVILLE's SG Maurice Marvel scores on a put back.  Up 4.  SG Louvon Davey traveled on his penetration.  A miss by LVILLE.  Ball out of bounds in our favor.  Timeout
3:17, Up 53-49

I put back SF Darius Chatman replacing SG Louvon Davey.  Chatman with the height advantage, shoots over LVILLE's Maurice Marvel for a 3, and it's good!  Chatman with 14 pts on 6-6 FG.  Up 7.  LVILLE missing a 3.  SF Lawrence Fox with a hurried 3.  Miss.  We wasted that possession.  But Fox comes up with a steal, and goes all the way with a slam!
2:01, Up 58-49

Another steal!  This time by C Lee Martin.  We go back to SF Lawrence Fox.  Fox with the right idea of taking it strong to the hoop.  Blocked.  Ball out of bounds, in favor of LVILLE.  I was asking for a foul, but play continues.  LVILLE to inbound.  SF Darius Chatman comes up with a steal on LVILLE's back court.  Chatman lays it in for 2!  Chatman still perfect at 7-7 FG, 16 pts
1:21, Up 60-49

Another steal by SF Darius Chatman!  Chatman with another layup.  Fans starting to celebrate. And why not.  We can already taste the title.  Up 13.  SF Lawrence Fox with a block!  We bring it up.  Chatman wants the ball.  Chatman drives, and he scores again!  What a performance by Chatman.  LVILLE can't even make a FT.  LVILLE stucked at 49 pts until the end.  What a 2nd half reversal, outscoring LVILLE 40 to 20, with Chatman scoring 16 of his 20 pts

Unbelievable run.  We had to beat the #1, #2, and #3 ranked teams to win the title.  Very sweet!

Final Score: Louisville - 49, Washington - 64

Post game observations

  • (+): We made good plays, both offensively and defensively, when it counted the most.  Starting from the Sweet 16 game, we outscored our opponents in the 2nd half by an average of 14 pts.  SF Darius Chatman was averaging less than 4 ppg in the 1st 5 tournament games; after today's game game, he now becomes a household name.
