Career Game #162

2005 NCAA Tournament 2nd Round

Mar 17, 2005: (9) Washington (22-8, 13-5) vs (8) Louisville (19-11, 11-5)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, some freedom, princeton
  • Defense: 2-3, rarely press
  • Key Players: Jr Ernest Hughes 20.9 ppg, 4,9 rpg, 42% 3PT
  • Notes: LVILLE best rebounding in the Big East with 39.2 rpg (#2 Nat'l).  They are also a very good defensive team, allowing just 38.2% opp FG (#6 Nat'l).  This is a very tough (8)-seed team

How they got here

  • At large selection (3rd Big East)

1st Half

LVILLE displayed their outside shooting ability, while on the other hand we're firing blanks.  The score is not indicative of how we were dominated during the 1st half; LVILLE's production was even limited with their 11 missed FTs

Halftime: Down 30-43

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: WASH 3-16, LVILLE 6-10
  • Rebs: WASH 14, LVILLE 24

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Ronnie Peppers 13 pts, 4 rebs
  • LVILLE: SF Ernest Hughes 14 pts, 4-4 3PT

2nd Half

C Cory Wethers picked up his 4th foule early in the 2nd half.  Many might have thought we were done at that point, but the players showed great determination to come back.  The last 3pt shot by PG Jeryl Milton gave us a 19-6 run to tie the game!
14:29, Tied at 49

LVILLE able to regroup.  Our backup big man PF Carlin Bogans has fouled out, forcing me to bring back early C Cory Wethers.  It is still a manageable deficit
7:31, Down 55-60

We finally have taken the lead and the LVILLE fans are stunned!
3:40, Up 66-64

We got called for another foul.  LVILLE splits.  LVILLE with a 32 to 9 advantage in FTAs.  Up 1.  PG Jeryl Milton missing a 3.  LVILLE able to score on a put back.  LVILLE with 13 offensive rebounds.  TImeout
2:35, Down 66-67

SF Darius Chatman missed.  LVILLE missed a 3.  We go back to Chatman, who drives, and got fouled.  Chatman converts both FTs.  Chatman has been huge in this game with 18 pts off the bench.  Up 1.  A turn over by LVILLE.  SG Ronnie Peppers hits a big 3!  Up 4.  Not over yet as LVILLE able to respond with a quick FG.  Timeout
1:00, Up 71-69

C Cory Wethers goes inside and scores!  Wethers able to nurse his 4 fouls and keep himself in the game for quite some time now.  Timeout LVILLE
0:46, Up 73-69

LVILLE hits a jumper.  Timeout
0:34, Up 73-71

LVILLE not fouling.  I told the team to keep the ball, but freshman SG Ronnie Peppers fires up a shot, missed, and LVILLE got the rebound.  Timeout LVILLE
0:11, Up 73-71

LVILLE's SF Ernest Hughes scores off a double team.  If only we held on the ball earlier, this wouldn't have happened.  Timeout
0:03, Tied at 73

We were not able to get a shot.  We go to OT

End of Regulation: Tied at 73

LVILLE opened up scoring with 2 FTs.  After that, PG Jeryl Milton and SF Darius Chatman scored back to back 3s!
3:26, Up 79-75

Teams trading misses.  LVILLE then scored on another put back.  Up 2.  We had 2 shots on our next possession, but we missed both.  LVILLE's SF Ernest Hughes missed.  We have a chance to increase our lead, but SG Ronnie Peppers missed a wide open 3.  This time LVILLE scores
1:28, Tied at 79

We have not scored in more than 2 mins.  No one wants to take the shot.  SF Darius Chatman made a bad pass.  Less than a minute.  LVILLE with the ball.  PF Alex Johnson came up with a block.  I use my only timeout
0:40, Tied at 79

SG Ronnie Peppers hits a 3!  What a big time shot!  Timeout LVILLE
0:33, Up 82-79

When the pass went to LVILLE's C Dusan Oliver, we immediately fouled.  Oliver is currently 1-12 FT.  Oliver missed the 1st.  Makes the 2nd.  No timeouts left
0:27, Up 82-70

LVILLE fouls quickly.  LVILLE just entered the penalty.  SG ROnnie Peppers to shoot 1-and-1.  Makes both!  Last timeuot by LVILLE
0:24, Up 84-80

We press, and LVILLE traveled on the back court.  We're moving to the next round!  Trailed by 13 at half time.  Unbelievable effort!

Final Score: Washington - 84, Louisville - 80 OT

Career Game #163

2005 NCAA Tournament 3rd Round

Mar 17, 2005: (9) Washington (23-8, 13-5) vs (1) #4 Villanova (28-6, 13-3)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, outside, some freedom, flex
  • Defense: 1-3-1, press at points
  • Key Players: Sr SG Mike Simpson 19.5 ppg, 3.8 ppg
  • Notes:NOVA forces its opponents to 19.4 topg (#2 Nat'l)

How they got here

  • At large selection (2nd Big East)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Navy 78-66 (Simpson 22 pts, 6 rebs)

1st Half

Was not able to keep up on NOVA's fast paced game, and gave up too many pts.  Foul trouble on PF Alex Johnson affected our rebounding

Halftime: Down 24-41

Key stat(s)

  • FG: WASH 31%, NOVA 44%
  • Rebs: WASH 11, NOVA 24

Key Players

  • WASH: SG Ronnie Peppers 10 pts, 3 rebs
  • NOVA: SF George Davis 12 pts, 6 rebs

2nd Half

We started the 2nd half with 4 turn overs.  After a few minutes, all of a sudden we're staring at a 35 pt deficit.  When we cut the lead to 24, the crowd might have sensed a miraculous comeback will soon happen.  But we have no match against NOVA's explosive offense.  NOVA had 4 players scoring at least 14 pts.  It was still a good season for us, surpassing the expectations of many

Final Score: Washington - 52, Villanova - 84

Key Players

  • WASH: C Shamel Anderson 8 pts, 8-8 FT

10:53, Up 53-49

Now our turnovers are piling up, slowing down our offense
5:38, Up 57-53

Earlier CHRL hits a 3 to take the lead.  Teams traded 2 FTs each afterwards

CHRL called for 3 successive fouls getting them into penalty.  C Lee Martin missed the front end of his 1-and-1.  Another turnover by CHRL.  We still need to score here.  SG Louvon Davey takes it strong to the hoop, and got fouled.  Davey hits both.  Timeout CHRL

  • Key Players: Sr C Stephen Jackson 11.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg
  • Notes: NH shooting 54% FG in their 1st 2 games

Career Game #167

Alaskan Classic

Nov 25, 2005: (5) Stephen F Austin (2-1) vs (4) Washington (3-0)

Current streaks on the line

  • 3-game Alaskan Classic win streak (champs last year)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, triangle
  • Defense: m2m, press at points
  • Key Players: Sr SF Beau Patrick 14.0 ppg, 54% FG
  • Notes: SFA shooting just 28.6% 3PT

1st Half

With 11 turn overs and lots of fouls given up in the 1st half, we should consider ourselves lucky being down by just 1.  We should minimized our errors in the 2nd half

Halftime: Down 42-43

Key stat(s)

  • Rebs: WASH 20, SFA 16
  • Turnovers: WASH 11, SFA 7

Key Players

  • WASH: SF Darius Chatman 11 pts, 4 rebs

2nd Half

Bad decision on my part to go zone early in the 2nd half, as SFA shooting consistently from the outside.  We still can't control our turnovers and fouls.  C Cory Wethers has fouled out

11:24, Down 52-61

Starting to get some stops

7:02, Down 61-66

We can't afford to just trade pts with SFA.  We also missed 3 of our last 4 FT attempts.  Wasted opportunities.  PG Jeryl Milton also fouled out

3:44, Down 68-72

A miss by SFA.  PG Brent Green was fouled on his attempt, and he made 2 FTs.  Down 2.  We let their PG get away with an uncontested layup.  Timeout

2:20, Down 70-74

PF Alex Johnson takes it inside and scores.  Johnson with a good game today, 12 pts and 6 rebs.  Down 2.  We made a stop.  Chance to tie here.  Timeout

1:42, Down 72-74

PG Brent Green got fouled again, and he calmly sinks both FTs.  Tied game.  SFA's center hits a medium range jump shot.  We can't seem to make that play that will put us on top.  Timeout

1:07, Down 74-76

We go to C Lee Martin down low, and Martin scores.  Tied again.  SFA not calling a timeout.  SFA turns the ball over.  Chance to take the lead.  SG Louvon Davey, who has been quiet today, takes a jump shot.  Missed but got fouled.  Lucky break there.  Davey to shoot 2 FTs.  Makes both, and we finally take the lead for the 1st time here in the 2nd half.  Timeout SFA

0:26, Up 78-76

SFA hits a jump shot to tie the game!  I called my last timeout

0:19, Tied at 78

C Lee Martin about to take his man inside, but he got fouled.  1-and-1 for Martin, who is not a good FT shooter.  Martin makes the important 1st FT.  And also makes the 2nd.  Timeout SFA.

0:13, Up 80-78

We made some substitutions for defensive purposes.  We press to waste some time.  5 secs left.  SFA passed it to PF Derricus Kincaide down low.  Kincaide trying to take it inside.  1 sec left.  Kincaide puts up a tough shot against a double team.  It's in!  We played the best defense possible.  We go to OT

End of Regulation: Tied at 80

OT

We got 1st crack, and SF Darius Chatman hits a 3.  Up 3.  SFA had 3 consecutive unproductive possessions.  C Lee Martin increased our lead with a basket.  Up 5.  We get a steal and scored on the break

2:22, Up 87-80

Another miss by SFA.  SG Louvon Davey scored a FT.  Up 8.  SFA cut it to 5.  Timeout

10:06, Up 53-51

MD responded with an 8-0 run.  I had to bring back PG Jeryl Milton before this game gets out of control.  We tried to stay close

3:54, Down 61-62

Had a couple of chances to take the lead, but we let it go.  C Lee Martin split his FTs to tie the game.  After a MD turnover, C Shamel Anderson missed on the low post on what could have been a go ahead basket.  Another miss by MD.  Timeout

2:24, Tied at 62

We thew away the ball.  Damn.  But MD turns the ball over also.  Another timeout

1:41, Tied at 62

Not happy with the team during the timeout.  We wasted too many chances already.  SG Ronnie Peppers missed a 3.  MD's C Andrew Carson got away and scores on a dunk.  Down 2.  C Lee Martin responds with an offensive rebound put back. Tied.  We gave away another inside basket to MD.  Poor defense in the last 2 sequences.  Timeout

1st Half

Our big men were effective early in the game, even against USD's zone defense.  But we begin to falter once again, after PG Jeryl Milton had to sit with 3 fouls. We threw away an 18 pt lead and let USD come back quickly

11:16, Up 64-57

No we couldn't hold our lead once again, and even let USD take the lead.  Our 18 pt lead sometime during the 1st half was a distant memory

8:28, Down 64-65

We regrouped.  SF Darius Chatman carried our offense.  We took a 7 pt lead earlier, but for what has been a familiar pattern here in this game, USD quickly came back once again.  Timeout

We missed.  USD extended their lead with another FG.  Timeout

2:15, Down 77-80

SG Ronnie Peppers wanted to win outright, but he missed his 3PT attempt this time.  We gave up a foul. We're in the penalty.  USD scores 2 FTs.

0:31, Down 80-84
