How I started.. Playing Sports Sims

Recommended Posts

I started playing GM games in the mid to late eighties. I got my first computer at nine which was a Spectrum +3. With it came a floppy disk with a game called Soccer Boss.

The Boss

You took charge of a club in either Division 2, 3 or 4 and had to win promotion to Division 1 (Now the premier league). Me and best best friend spent hours on this game unable to win promotion to the top division, no matter what we did we always seemed to start the season really well and then loss a lot of game at the end to miss out on promotion. Then by some grace of god I managed to finish 3rd in the league and was promoted. The next two seasons we won Division 1 as easy as pie and won two FA Cups...Great times and it started me down the road of manager games.

I started with OOTP23 and really enjoyed it.  It was my first sim style vs controller sports game.  Branching out to the other sports this year despite not being as familiar with players and strategy.

I am watching TV, after hard work, so will make this quick,

I too will live a whole life with memory challenges,

In introducing myelf thread, there is a ton more about this sort of stuff,

I too have always loved that stats. made it easier to define performances in sports, really FB has always been king & it is not close. The love for GM Games (more than just Techno Bowl, EAS' & Such Fluff FootBall Games that yes, I did play a lot of before FPS: FBP series started) was started through Front Page Sports: FootBall Pro series & it's best has ever been plays-game plans-profiles creating/customization, & reached peak in '98 version.

I bought my first baseball sim game long before computer sims were available.  In junior high, I started with Program IV Baseball then progressed to Sherco (I really enjoyed the unique gameboard).  Later, I played the C& D version of Statis Pro for a few years but then off to college when I left baseball sims behind for a while.  I later came back when I needed a hobby, first using SSI's Baseball Strategy, then Micro League and finally Earl Weaver before I saw that APBA had come out for the PC.  Tried that for a few  years but have preferred Strato in recent years.  Have tried several but enjoy trying new sims and comparing them.

I've played countless iterations of baseball video games, but I think my love of sims goes back to paper cards in Strat-O-Matic baseball.  That was the magic I was after with trying sims rather than games like The Show that really don't care about their Franchise modes, and haven't for 10 years.  The best I've ever played is OOTP Baseball and I've tried them all.  Except PureSim, which is why I'm here.

I started by playing strat-o-matic in 1967 when I was 14. Never completed a season with cards but am still playing many of the computer games today.
