Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, heavy outside, triangle
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: So SG John Gregory 15.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg
  • Notes:

1st Half

We are trampling IAST on the boards, and scored a lot on 2nd chance opportunities.  C Aaron Lappas already with a double double

Halftime: Up 45-27

Key stat(s)

  • 2nd chance: UCLA 16, IAST 6
  • Paint: UCLA 30, IAST 10

Key Players

  • UCLA: C Aaron Lappas 14 pts, 10 rebs

2nd Half

Not even IAST's improved outside shooting in the 2nd half can bring them back, and they could only watch as we pile up on our inside pts.  SG Dickey Walton is proving to be a more effective player when coming off the bench, as compared to being a starter last season.

Final Score: Iowa St - 54, UCLA - 78

  • Key Players: Fr SG Brandon Patrick 18.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg
  • Notes: BC scored 99 pts in the last round; Patrick had 33 pts in that game

1st Half

We seem sluggish at the beginning.  In came SG Dickey Walton and PG Eugene Tucker, and they helped speed up and bring energy to the game; the two combined for 12 pts.  Defensively, we forced BC to a lot of turnovers

WS Midwest Invitational Finals

Nov 23, 2012: (7) Santa Clara (3-1) vs (1) #7 UCLA (4-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, heavy inside, flex
  • Defense: m2m, presses only in close and late situations
  • Key Players: Jr C Delano Huge 14.3 ppg
  • Notes: SNTCL averaging 75 ppg in the tournament.  They also won the road against Georgia, a team that went to the Final 4 last season

1st Half

Good shooting 1st half for SG Mark Pettway,  We were unchallenged in rebounding.  Only SNTCL's outside shooting kept them from being blown away

Halftime: Up 44-31

Key stat(s)

  • 2nd chance: UCLA 9, SNTCL 0
  • TOs: UCLA 6, SNTCL 9

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Mark Pettway 19 pts, 3 3s

2nd Half

Starting to pull away as SNTCL's turnovers piling up, and we're defending better against their outside shooters

11:14, Up 67-46

Our guards doing most of the scoring today.  But a "big" (literally) factor was 7'1 C Aaron Lappas' intimidating presence in the middle.  SNTCL could do nothing but be content in shooting jump shots.

Career Game #419

Nov 25, 2012: Georgia Tech (0-2) @ #7 UCLA (5-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, princeton
  • Defense: m2m, press most of the time
  • Key Players: Fr PF Josh Boythe 14.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 5.0 bpg, #2 recruit
  • Notes: GT has the #1, #2, and #3 recruits this season!  But their collective talent hasn't translated to win yet, averaging just 59 ppg

1st Half

Forget about their 0-2 record; if you have the top 3 freshman in the country in your starting lineup, you certainly have a good team.  GT's big 3 posed a great challenge to defend; they combined for 27 pts (rest of GT: 7) and 15 rebs (rest of GT: 3).  We were trailing 25-32, but got ourselves a good finish with a 15-2 run.  But our work not yet done

Halftime: Up 40-34

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 46%, GT 38%
  • Rebs: UCLA 12, GT 18

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Mark Pettway 16 pts, 3 rebs, 3 asts
  • GT: PF Josh Boythe 10 pts, 6 rebs, 3 blks

2nd Half

GT with 10 turnovers already here in the 2nd half.  But we haven't maximized much of our opportunities

11:45, Up 54-40

We were successful in pushing GT's Josh Boythe away from the basket, and Boythe has to force a couple ill-advised 3s.  We led by 23 with 8 mins remaining, and we protected our comfortable lead the rest of the game

Final Score: Georgia Tech - 63, UCLA - 79

Scouting Report

  • Offense: slow pace, heavy outside, triangle
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Fr SF Tevis Temple 21.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2.8 bpg, #6 recruit
  • Notes: UNC committing just 10.5 topg

1st Half

A sensational 1st half for Fr PF Chris Lucas, showing us what he can bring to the program for the next 4 years.  UNC's SF Tevis Temple had a good start, sc oring his team's 1st 10 pts, ut has been quiet since

Halftime: Up 41-28

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 57%, UNC 29%
  • Asts: UCLA 11, UNC 4

Key Players

  • UCLA: PF Chris Lucas 15 pts, 4 rebs, 2 blks
  • UNC: SF Tevis Temple 12 pts, 2 3s

2nd Half

It seem's we got UNC's SF Tevis Temple's number, who hasn't been much of a factor his his explosion at the start of the game.  Temple shooting just 5-22 FG, 14 pts

11:23, Up 61-41

UNC momentarily cut our lead to 14, but that was the best they could do.  PF Chris Lucas and the rest of our big men reasserted their dominance in the paint, to compliment SG Mark Pettway's outside sniping

Final Score: North Carolina - 63, UCLA - 83

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, shuffle
  • Defense: m2m, press about half the game
  • Key Players: Fr SF Travis Whitehead 11.0 ppg, 4.8 rpg
  • Notes: MINN scoring just 52.8 ppg (6th lowest Nat'l)

1st Half

We led 10-0 less than 2 mins into the game, and that served as an indication of the many transition baskets we scored in the 1st half.  SG Mark Pettway getting more confident as the season progresses

Halftime: Up 49-31

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 58%, MINN 38%
  • Fast break: UCLA 16, MINN 5

Key Players

2nd Half

MINN's efforts to deliberately slow down the game here in the 2nd half didn't do much to affect our lead

10:06, Up 65-46

We never gave MINN a chance to get a good run, as SG Mark Pettway resumed his outside shooting.

  • Key Players: So SG Larry Trombley 17.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg
  • Notes: TEMP shooting 48.4% FG and 40.0% 3PT

1st Half

We got to 31 pts without getting a single contribution from our season-leading scorer SG Mark Pettway,  And then all of a sudden, Pettway exploded to score 13 of our last 22 pts of the 1st half.

Halftime: Up 53-28

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 80%, TEMP 42%
  • Rebs: UCLA 17, TEMP 8

Key Players

  • UCLA: C Aaron Lappas 16 pts, 7-7 FG

Career Game #423

Dec 13, 2012: #2 Houston (9-1) @ #3 UCLA (9-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: very fast pace, balanced, flex
  • Defense: m2m, only press in close and late situations
  • Key Players: Sr SG Joel Schuller 17.2 ppg, 5.7 rpg
  • Notes: You won't see HOU up high in offensive rankings, but their defense has been superb so far; 20.3 opp topg (#1 Nat'l) and 37.2% opp FG (#14)

1st Half

HOU maybe winning games because of their defense, but they have great shooting skills i the 1st half.  Got my 1st technical of the season for excessive complaining due to the number of fouls our guys are getting.  We were down by as many as 10.  I had to turn to my reserves just to keep us close, and they did a good job.  But we have to work hard on defense in the 2nd half, and minimize our turnovers

Halftime: Down 52-55

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 57%, HOU 63%
  • Fast break: UCLA 4, HOU 15

Key Players

  • UCLA: C Aaron Lappas 12 pts, 3 rebs
  • HOU: SG Joel Schuller 11 pts, 4 rebs

2nd Half

We finally showed some urgency on defense.  Started the 2nd half on a 15-4 run.  But since then, the pace of the game has gone from fast to break neck speed, as both teams trying to outrun one another to score easy baskets.  Both teams shooting well over 60% FG

10:03, Up 89-80

We are able to just hang on, and answer whatever HOU is producing.  Both teams in the penalty

5:18, Up 98-91

HOU making a few more stops than us.  Timeout

2:22, Up 102-98

SG Dickey Walton, who is 2-9 FG so far, hits a clutch jumper.  Up 6.  HOU hits 2 FTs.  Up 4.  SG Mark Pettway missed a 3.  Another foul called.  HOU scoring 2 more from the line.  Timeout

1:18, Up 104-102

SG Dickey Walton drived.  Missed.  Timeout HOU

0:59, Up 104-102

C Aaron Lappas gets a steal!  Outlet to SG Dickey Walton, who missed the shot, but got hacked.  Walton hits both FTs.  Timeout HOU

0:42, Up 106-102

We are playing good defense.  HOU forces a 3.  Missed.  Out of bounds.  Our ball!  0:19 left.  HOU fouls.  PG Troy Cotton, a reliable FT shooter, splits.  Up 5.  HOU with a 3.  Missed.  Game over.  What a match!  We had 6 players in double figures; HOU had 5

Final Score: Houston - 102, UCLA - 107

Career Game #424

Dec 20, 2012: UNLV (6-4) @ #3 UCLA (10-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: slow pace, heavy outside, 5 out
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Sr PG Dexter McConnell 17.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 4.9 apg
  • Notes: McConnell has made 17 3s in their last 2 games

1st Half

Great defense, limiting UNLV to just 7 made FGs.  It would have been almost a perfect 1st half, except for the head-scratching numbers we had.

Halftime: Up 35-18

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 62%, UNLV 18%
  • TOs: UCLA 13, UNLV 7

Key Players

  • UCLA: C Aaron Lappas 13 pts, 4 rebs

2nd Half

We suddenly don't look like a team that has won 10 straight games.  We're missing a lot shots, and continue to turn the ball over.  Our lead was cut down to 10 earlier, before we scored the last 4 pts

11:45, Up 43-29

It was just a 12pt lead with 6 mins remaining.  Everyone, except C Aaron Lappas, was sluggish on offense.  We went on a small 6-0 run to lead by 18, and that removed any hopes on UNLV making a major comeback

Final Score: UNLV - 51, UCLA - 68

Career Game #429

Jan 10, 2013: #2 UCLA (15-0, 4-0) @ California (6-7, 3-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: very fast pace, inside, triangle
  • Defense: m2m, press only in close and late situations
  • Key Players: Sr SG Jamahl Abrams 12.5 ppg
  • Notes: CAL is 3-0 on conference home games, with an average winning margin of almost 25 pts

1st Half

I wasn't pleased with our turnovers.  CAL is a good shooting team, and we can't risk giving them more scoring opportunities.  We led by as many as 14, but that was easily wiped away due to our turnovers.  CAL is also getting easy inside baskets

Halftime: Up 42-40

Key stat(s)

  • TOs: UCLA 8, CAL 5
  • Paint: UCLA 16, CAL 22

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Mark Pettway 13 pts, 3 rebs

2nd Half

Both teams shooting well from the outside.  We're showing a little better performance in applying defensive pressure.  CAL with 5 turnovers already in the 2nd half.

10:21, Up 64-58

We increased our lead to 10, but CAL just hit another 3 in their last play

5:24, Up 73-66

SG Mark Pettway involved in our last 3 baskets; he hit a 3, and assisted on the other 2 FGs, to keep CAL at bay

3:07, Up 80-71

CAL coming to within 6 by hitting another 3.  SG Mark Pettway answers back with jumper.  Up 8.  C Anthony Burton comes away with a block.  With less than a minute left, we went on time wasting mode.  CAL didn't make an effort to give up fouls, and just let us dribble and passed the ball

Final Score: UCLA - 85, California - 74

  • Notes: UTAH allowing opponents to shoot a conference-worst 47.6% FG

1st Half

Because of our tight defense, UTAH had to take a lot of forced shots towards the end of their shot clock.  We didn't particularly shoot the ball well, but still managed to end up with a comfortable lead

Key stat(s)

  • 2nd chance: UCLA 10, UTAH 2

Key Players

Career Game #431

Jan 17, 2013: #1 UCLA (17-0, 6-0) @ Oregon St (2-13, 0-6)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: slow pace, balanced, 5 out
  • Defense: m2m, only press in close and late situations
  • Key Players: Jr SF Idris Peterson 14.8 ppg, 4.1 rpg
  • Notes: ORST on a 13-game losing streak

1st Half

Very flat start.  Sometimes the most dangerous opponents are those whose backs are against the wall.  Not only we're not making shots, but also turning the ball over a lot.  Down 11-21 with 8 mins remaining.  In came SG TJ Jones, who scored 6 pts as part of a 14-0 run that saw us take the lead.  ORST with a strong finish though

Halftime: Down 29-31

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: UCLA 1-4, ORST 3-8
  • Asts: UCLA 3, ORST 9

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG TJ Jones 6 pts, 3-3 FG

2nd Half

Still not shooting well, and probably we won't for the rest of the game.  We're relying on rebounding and defense to stay afloat

11:53, Up 39-36

Our offense showing some improvement, but ORST not letting themselves to get far behind

4:16, Up 55-53

We went on a small 7-0 run, with SG Mark Petteway making 2 baskets.  Prior to that run, Pettway has been shooting a woeful 1-12 FG

1:44, Up 62-53

ORST made a split FT, and later on a basket, to get themselves closer.  Up 6.  But on our next play, SG Mark Pettway hits a huge basket to give us a 3 possession lead

0:47, Up 64-56

Even though ORST hit a 3 after, time was running out, and they had to give up fouls.  PG Troy Cotton sealed the game for us by making his FTs.  SG Mark Pettway found the right time to contribute, scoring 7 of his 9 pts in the last 3 mins of the game.  Teams combined for 42 turnovers

Career Game #432

Jan 20, 2013: Stanford (13-4, 7-0) @ #1 UCLA (18-0, 7-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: very fast pace, balanced, princeton
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Fr C Joey Karcher, 14.1 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 2.5 bpg
  • Notes: STAN on a 9-game winning streak, limiting their opponents to less than 60 pts in 6 of those wins

1st Half

SG Mark Pettway was hot since the beginning of the game.  It appeared to be a no-contest when we led by as many as 22.  STAN suddenly caught fire towards the end, to cut our lead to just 11, but we scored the last 4 pts of the 1st half.  STAN's C Joey Karcher made it difficult for us to get as much production on our half-court power game, so we turned to our running attack and got plenty of easy fast break pts.

Halftime: Up 49-34

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 50%, STAN 40%
  • Fast break: UCLA 15, STAN 3

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Mark Pettway 21 pts, 2 stls
  • STAN: C Joey Karcher 4 pts, 6, rebs, 3 blks

2nd Half

C Aaron Lappas has done a good job defending against STAN's C Joey Karcher, who hasn't been much of a factor offensively (3-11 FG).  SG Dickey Walton has provided scoring support to SG Mark Pettway

10:20, Up 65-43

I am glad we gave brought in our A-game, against possibly the 2nd best team in the conference
