Career Game #58

Current streaks on the line

  • 9 game win streak
  • 5 game road win streak

Feb 18, 2002: #9 Delaware St (23-3, 12-2) @ Howard (13-12, 8-6)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, some freedom, flex
  • Defense: 3-2, rarely press
  • Key Players: So PG Lou Foreman 13.8 ppg, 3.6 apg
  • Notes: HOW averaging just over 11 3pt shot attempts per game

1st Half

We have not defended the paint well, allowing HOW to get a lot of inside pts and shoot a high percentage of their shots.

Halftime: Down 35-39

Key stat(s)

  • FG: DELST 44, HOW 68%

Key Players

  • DELST: SG Lewis Lepore 13 pts, 3 3s

2nd Half

We still can't make stops.  HOW shooting close to 70% FG now, and we have 5 team fouls already

15:52, Down 38-48

Got some shots going but can't sustain momentum due to our fouls.  HOW not only shooting well from the field, but also from the line at 17-20 FT

9:37, Down 47-62

Finally we have an extended run going,  Cut down our deficit to 6 earlier.  HOW made a basket.  We got fouled.  SF Nick splits his FTs.  C Brandon Braun comes up with an offensive rebound, but he missed a follow up.  Down 7.  We get a steal, and scored on the break.

3:10, Down 61-66

We got called for foul.  I am getting warned by the refs for complaining.  HOW splits.  Timeout

2:52, Down 61-67

C Jason Winter able to free himself down low and scores inside.  Down 4.  Another foul on us, against a PF attempting a jump shot.  I didn't see any contact there, but the refs say otherwise.  HOW splits.  Down 5.  SG Lewis Lepore drives.  Blocked, no foul.  I was furious with the no call.  HOW gets the ball.  We get the ball back with a steal.  Lepore shoots a 3 from top of the key.  It's good!  Down 2.  We forced HOW to take a tough shot with their shot clock winding down.  They made it!  Timeout

0:59, Down 66-70

HOW fouls.  PG Sidney Petteway sinks 2 FTs.  Down 2.  HOW missed.  Loose ball.  HOW retains possession.  0:43 left, 0:22 on the shot clock.  HOW missed a 3.  But they get the offensive rebound, and converts on the 2nd try.  Damn, we wasted that.  Timeout

0:34, Down 68-72

Not necessarily we need a 3, but I have 3 shooters on the floor.  C Brandon Braun takes a quick shot inside.  Missed, but got fouled.  Split.  Down 3, 0:22 left  We give up the quick foul.  HOW converts both FTs.  Timeout

0:20, Down 69-74

Now we need a 3.  We missed.  That's about it.  Upset not because we couldn't make stops at a crucial time, but we dug ourselves a big hole in the 2nd half (down by as many as 17).

Career Game #64

2002 NCAA Tournament 2nd round (32)

Mar 19, 2002: (5) #25 Louisville (20-10, 9-7) vs (4) #9 Delaware St (28-4, 13-3)

Scouting Report

  • Strengths: 38.8 rpg (#5), 57.3 opp ppg (#10), 36.8% opp FG (#5)

How they got here

  • At large bid; 5th Big East
  • NCAA 2nd rd, def Charlotte 73-52 (5 players in double figures)

1st Half

Doing a good job defensively, forcing LVILLE to be a jump shooting team.  Their best player, PF Michael Eschmeyer with only 2 pts.  On the other hand, we had 4 players hitting a 3.  We led by as many as 24, but LVILLE had a late surge to keep themselves within striking distance.

2nd Half

SF Nick Fleming scored our 1st 6 pts of the 2nd half, before SG Kevin Stokes buried his 4th triple of the game

15:27, Up 55-39

Our defense remains consistent, forcing LVILLE to take a lot of contested outside shots and not giving an inch inside.  Earlier SG Lewis Lepore became our 5th player in this game to hit a 3.  SF Nick Fleming has scored 10 of his 16 pts here in the 2nd half

10:26, Up 62-43

Another 3 by SG Lewis Lepore earlier gave us a commanding 24 pt lead.  LVILLE came up with a string of baskets, but C Brandon Braun and SG Kevin Stokes making sure we protect our lead.

3:58, Up 78-55

We started to chew up some clock. The 2nd unit played the last 3 mins.  Our biggest win so far.  A total team effort; 8 players scoring at least 6 pts each.  We're going to the Sweet 16 for the 1st time in school history!

Career Game #65

2002 NCAA Tournament West Regionals Semi Finals (Sweet 16)

Mar 24, 2002: (4) #9 Delaware St (29-4, 13-3) vs (1) #1 Temple (34-1, 16-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, inside, some freedom, triangle
  • Defense: 1-3-1, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr SG Dan Miles 22.0 ppg
  • Strengths: 77.6 ppg (#1), 17.8 apg (#1), 10.0 topg (#1), 54.8 opp ppg (#4), 39.5% opp FG (#13), 18.4 opp topg (#4)
  • Notes: Starting PF/C combo combine for 24.0 ppg and 16. rpg.  They have the best offense, and ranks in the top 5 in defense! Only loss was a road game against Syracuse, 85-90, where they gave up 48 pts in the paint

How they got here

  • Won A10 Tournament
  • NCAA 2nd rd, def Navy 76-52 (Miles 19 pts)
  • NCAA 3rd rd, def Creighton 78-50 (Miles 23 pts)

1st Half

Our plan is to dump the ball to our big men, and let them operate inside.  So far so good, with C Jason Winter and C Brandon Braun combining for 23 pts on 11-16 FG.  Our defense has also held its own, forcing TEM to shoot low percentage shots.  Problem is we gave up a lot fouls, with Braun and Winter having 3 each.  We'l just continue what we are doing, hope our big men keeps away from foul trouble, and we could score a major upset here

Halftime: Up 32-28

Key stat(s)

  • Pts paint: DELST 26, TEMP 4
  • FTs: DELST 4-6, TEMP 14-18

Key Players

  • DELST: C Jason Winter 15 pts, 7-8 FG
  • TEMP: C Gerard Fife 10 pts, 4 rebs

2nd Half

We have 4 turn overs already in the 2nd half; we only committed 2 in the entire 1st half

14:41, Up 36-34

7 2nd half turn overs.  Both teams have score very little.  C Brandon Braun has 6 of our 8 2nd half pts

11:07, Up 40-34

We get our 1st 3 of the game, courtesy of SG Lewis Lepore,  We get another inside basket, this time from C Jamal Swift.  Swift added 2 more FTs.  All of a sudden, we're ahead by double digits.  TEMP got nailed at 34 for about 9 mins now.  TEMP shooting a dismal 2-22 3PT

7:26, Up 47-34

TEMP's star player, SG Dan Miles held to just 6 pts and 2-17 FG.  Miles trying to put his team back, scored 4 straight pts.  Up 9.  C Brandon Braun answers with a clutch inside basket.  Up 11.  Miles hits a 3 to get TEMP to within 8.  Miles beginning to wax hot now.  Teams traded misses.  SG Kevin Stokes drives, and missed.  Stokes has struggled today, 1-12 FG.  TEMP gets a basket.  Up 6.  We miss again.  And Miles puts up another 3, and just like that, TEMP has reduced this to a single possession game after being down by asmany as 13 a few minutes ago.  Timeout

3:36, Up 49-46

We get it to C Jason Winter down low.  Winter missed.  But C Bandon Braun is there to collect the offensive rebound and scores the put back.. A much needed basket.  Up 5.  TEMP also scores inside,  Up 3.  We get it back to Braun, but he was called for steps.  TEMP's SG Dan Miles hits a 3 to tie the game!  Timeout

2:40, Tied at 51

C Brandon Braun gets the ball but he is being defended well.  Braun made a bad pass, and TEMP scores on the break to take the lead.  A 19-4 run by TEMP.  Down 2.  C Jason Winter with the ball.  But Winter decided to kick out the pass.  SG Lewis Lepore dives, missed.  TEMP hits another 3!  22-4 run now by TEMP.  Timeout

1:30, Down 51-56

C Jason Winter gets his 1st FG of the 2nd half.  Down 3.  Just need t play honest defense.  C Brandon Braun gets a block, and we recover the ball.  Timeout

0:41, Down 53-56

C Brandon Braun gets a quick 2.  Good play.  Down 1, 0:32 left.  We had to give 2 fouls to get into penalty.  TEMP to shoot 1-and-1.  Split!  Down 2.  We have no timeouts left.  C Jason Winter gets it inside, and Winter ties the game!  0:16 left.  We still have to pay defense.  0:06 left.  TEMP's SF Greg Marshall drives.  Miss.  But TEMP's Joel Route is there to pick up the offensive rebound.  Route able to put up the shot before the buzzer.  Shot goes in!  Oh what a painful way to lose a game!

My players were devastated, but it was great effort, pushing the #1 team in the country to the limit.
