Career Game #32

Nov 13, 2001: Longwood (0-0) @ Delaware St (0-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: slow pace, balanced, some freedom, flex
  • Defense: m2m, press at points
  • Key Players: SF Steve Brown
  • Notes: LONG with only 7 scholarship players

1st Half

LONG having turn over problems, plus we're gobbling up offensive rebounds, resulting to a huge possession advantage.  We have a much deeper lineup now as compared to last year, so I have the luxury of fielding in fresh legs without much drop in quality

Halftime: Up 35-13

Key stat(s)

  • Turn overs: DELST 3, LONG 12
  • 3PT: DELST 3-8, LONG 0-11

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 10 pts, 4 rebs

2nd Half

Our shooting is rusty, but we still get a comfortable win because of our defense.  Our lone freshman, PG Anthony Turner, had a solid debut

Final Score: Longwood - 56, Delaware St - 71

Career Game #33

Nov 16, 2001: Delaware St (1-0) @ UC Davis (0-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, some freedom, 5 out
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: So SG Alan Sawyer
  • Notes:

1st Half

UCDAV competitive during the 1st 10 mins hitting their outside shots, but later on succumbed to the depth of our lineup.  A total of 9 players have scored on our side.  We're missing more inside shots that outside, but the number of offensive rebounds we're getting is insane.

Halftime: Up 44-23

Key stat(s)

  • Off Rebounds: DELST 15, UCDAV 2
  • Turn overs: DELST 6, UCDAV 11

Key Players

  • DELST: C Jason Winter 8 pts, 11 rebs

2nd Half

4 turn overs at the start of the 2nd half; took more than 5 mins before we scored our 1st FG.  We're went early in the penalty also.  UCDAV able to trim our lead to 13.  When C Jason Winter got his 4th foul, backup C Jamal Swift stepped in and we didn't lose our rebounding advantage.  Didn't take long for UCDAV to also be in the penalty, and we were able to restore our 20+ lead.  Refs were busy the entire 2nd half, both teams just trading lots of FTs, not enabling UCDAV to make another run.

Final Score: Delaware St - 85, UC Davis - 60

Box Scores

  • Notes: COLG shooting just 40.4% FG and 27.3% 3PT

1st Half

Trailed by 10 early partly due to our turn overs.  COLG's 53% FG made it difficult for us to rally quickly, but we did came back because of the efforts our big men.  C Brandon Braun and C Jason Winter combined for 28 pts.  We were leading by 3, until COLG hits a buzzer beating 3.  COLG hit 4 3s in the 1st half

Had a good offensive start led by C Brandon Braun and SF Nick Fleming.  Tapered off when our 2nd unit was on the floor, but we recovered nicely towards the end of the 1st half.  Our defense is also holding its own against this high-scoring UCRIV team

1st Half

We made 9 of our 1st 11 shots, but missed 12 of next 16.  We also missed 11 FTs.  We also had trouble containing CSC's PG Anthony Drayton

Our defense remained solid the entire 2nd half.  We steadily increased our lead, and was on top by 16 with 3 mins left.  Just glad that this game didn't come down the wire, or else our poor FT shooting might have played a factor.  CSC's PG Anthony Drayton limited to just 5 pts in the 2nd half

Career Game #45

Current streaks on the line

  • 10 game win streak
  • 3 game road win streak

Jan 4, 2002: #21 Delaware St (12-1, 1-0) @ Florida A&M (11-1, 1-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, some freedom, flex
  • Defense: 2-3, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr PG Gershone Carroll 23.3 ppg (#1 MEAC), 46% 3PT
  • Notes: FLAM averaging 77.6 ppg (#6 Nat'l) and 41.1% 3PT

1st Half

Poor start with 5 early turn overs, and we trail by 10.  We couldn't hit enough outside shots to counter FLAM's zone.  Our half coutr defense is doing ok, but FLAM has turned most of our turn overs into easy baskets.  Plus, has done a better job in preventing us to get offensive rebounds

Halftime: Down 31-38

  • 3PT: DELST 2-10, FLAM 5-14
  • Off Rebs: DELST 2, FLAM 6

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 6 pts, 3 rebs

2nd Half

More turn overs.  FLAM hitting outside bombs.  All of a sudden, we find ourselves down 21 early in the 2nd half.  We tried to shoot ourr way back.  Got some momentum going, and reduced our deficit to 11.  FLAM quickly killed it by making back to back 3s.  We're having one last late push

6:44, Down 62-71

We couldn't score on 4 of our next 5 possessions.  FLAM added 2 more triples, en route to a 10-2 run.  We're down by 17 with less than 4 mins remaining.  Can't make any shots in the end.  FLAM came up with a lot outside firepower today, led by PG Gershone Carroll with 22 pts and 6 3s.  The things that we hoped to take advantage of, like fast break and rebounding, were matched up by FLAM

  • Notes: BETH averaging just 60.6 ppg

1st Half

Our good defense having limited effect on the score line because our FG shooting hasn't surpassed 30% yet

11:42, Up 41-38

Finally some string of baskets, including our 1st 3 of the game.  11-0 run

9:18, Up 52-38

As it turned out, that one big spurt at middle of the 2nd half was all we needed.  Our good defense prevented BETH from making a run the rest of the game, and we maintained our lead until the end.  This was a hard-fought defensive battle.  C Brandon Braun and C Jason Winter combined for 21 pts in the 2nd half

After the game was tied for the 3rd time at 6-all, we put up a 14-0 run capitalizing on HOW's turn overs.  We made 15 of our 1st 16 shots, and continue building our lead.  Not a bad shooting performance by HOW also, but we just happen to be in the zone offensively during the 1st half

Current streaks on the line

  • 2 game win streak

Jan 14, 2002: #18 Delaware St (14-2, 3-1) @ Lipscomb (12-3, 4-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: slow pace, balanced, not many freedom, 5 out
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: So PG Linton McKenzie 12.9 ppg
  • Notes: LIPS good at slowing down the game, and limiting opponents to just 60.3 ppg (#1 MEAC)

1st Half

We were able to control the pace but unfortunately, we're not making our shots.  We're doing a good job on the boards.  We just need to minimize our turn overs in the 2nd half.  C Brandon Braun not a factor so far, just 3 pts on 1-6 FG

Halftime: Tied at 33

Key stat(s)

  • FG: DELST 34%, LIPS 42%
  • Turnovers : DELST 8, LIPS 6

Key Players

  • DELST: SG Kevin Stokes 8 pts, 2 rebs

2nd Half

PG play has been disappointing so far.  PG Sidney Petteway has 4 fouls, while PG Anthony Turner has 6 turn overs.  LIPS starting to pull away

14:29, Down 37-47

We still cant get a good run because of LIPS' defense

6:42, Down 50-57

We cut id won to 5.  Teams exchanged a 3pt shot each

4:49, Down 55-60

After a LIPS turn over, we had 2 shots on the next possession, which we both missed.  LIPS scored.  Down 7.  C Brandon Braun splits his FTs.  We have missed 6 Fts here in the 2nd half

3:35, Down 56-62

LIPS got 2 offensive rebounds on their next possession, and was able to use up a lot of clock.   And worse, we picked up our 7th team foul.  LIPS made 2 FTs.  Timeout

2:38, Down 56-64

SF Nick Fleming hit 2 FTs.  Both teams in the penalty.  Down 6.  LIPS missed.  Out of bounds.  LIPS retain possession.  LIPS able to easily score inside.  Very poor defense.  Down 8.  Foul on LIPS.  SG Lewis Lepore missed the front end, but we get the offensive rebound.  Follow up by C Brandon Braun is no good, but there was a foul.  Braun hits both.  Down 6.  Better rotation on our defense this time.  LIPS called for steps.  Timeout

1:23, Down 60-66

SG Kevin Stokes drives and scores.  Down 4.  LIPS answers back with a successful penetration,  Down 6.  SG Kevin Lepore missed a 3.  0:44 left.  We had to foul.  LIPS makes both FTs.  Down 8.  SG Kevin Stokes quickly hits a 3.  Down 5.  We had to foul again.  This time LIPS missed the front end.  Timeout

0:18, Down 65-70

SG Kevin Stokes puts up a 3.  Miss.  LIPS got the rebound.  We gave up a foul.  LIPS hit 2 more FTs to seal the game.  We hit a meaningless 3 at the buzzer.  Disappointing loss

Career Game #51

Current streaks on the line

  • 2 game win streak
  • We have yet to win a road conference game

SF Erik Fleming with a minor injury.  He'll play limited minutes

Jan 25, 2002: #19 Delaware St (16-3, 5-2) @ Norfolk St (13-5, 6-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, outside, some freedom, princeton
  • Defense: 2-3, rarely press
  • Key Players: Fr PG Marcus Stevens 12.1 ppg
  • Notes: NORST with the conference-best defense, limiting their opponents to 60.6 ppg

1st Half

POssible ways we can score against NORST's zone defense is to get easy fast break pts and/or hit outside shots.  We've done a little bit of both.  Problem was our penalty situation, and NORST doing a much better job at the line

Halftime: Down 30-35

Key stat(s)

  • FT: DELST 0-4, NORST 8-10
  • Turnovers : DELST 6, NORST 11

Key Players

  • DELST: SG Lewis Lepore 9 pts, 3 3s

2nd Half

We're making our outside shots, and we have finally taken the lead

13:28, Up 45-41

We have made 10 3s already.  SG Lewis Lepore and SF Anthony Jefferson have combined for 23 pts off the bench.  But NORST not going anywhere, as they managed to keep within striking distance

8:09, Up 57-49

Lead extended to 11 with less than 4 mins remaining.  Both teams came up empty on tehir next 2 possessions.  NORST made a FG to cut our lead to 9, but SG Kevin Stokes scored 5 straight pts.  Up 14 with just over a min left.  We slowed down the game, and take a very important road win.  We outscored NORST in the 2nd half, 40-24

Final Score: Delaware St - 70, Norfolk St - 59
