Carpenter Closes Out Billikens Recruiting Class

ST. LOUIS | Lamar Carpenter is officially a Billiken. The Illinois shooting guard signed his Letter-of-Intent today and joined Italian power forward Dominic Moretti in the Saint Louis 88 recruiting class.

Carpenter narrowed his college choices down to the Billikens and Western Illinois. After waiting over three weeks from the beginning of the signing period, he finally decided he wanted to be a Billiken and signed with them.

Carpenter is 5-foot-10 and comes from Tri-Valley High School in Downs, Illinois. He was ranked as the No. 115 shooting guard in his class and has the potential to make an immediate impact at Saint Louis. Carpenter was targeted early in the recruiting process by Billikens coach Jeremy Knight due to his great athleticism and perimeter shooting. He needs to work on his defense, but he should be one of the Billikens top two or three 3-point shooters from the moment he steps foot on campus.

With his ability and the lack of depth at the guard position, Carpenter should see the floor quite a bit this season. While Carpenter enters a situation with a thin backcourt, Moretti will enter a very crowded, and well-established, front court.

Moretti, at 6-foot-7 and 225 pounds, boasts a frame made for banging in the low post. He appears to be slightly more athletic than most of the post players on the Saint Louis squad, but he is still very raw. The best scenario for him would be to redshirt the upcoming season and adjust to the American style of basketball while working on his game. If he doesn’t redshirt it’s highly unlikely he will see much playing time with so many established post players returning.

Entering the recruiting period many thought that Knight would sign two guards due to the lack of depth and his view that you can never have too many guards. It certainly seemed feasible that he could also take a guard and a wing player to help space the floor. Knight certainly got a guard that can space the floor with Carpenter. Most doubted that he would sign a post player unless it was the right player that could develop and take over next season when Randy Erhardt and Dennis Ross graduate. Is Moretti the right post player? Time will only tell, but he is certainly very raw and somewhat of a risky signing at this point.
