Entry: December 1^st 2015

 

A 9-5 record over the month of November and the Red Wings remain in first place in the Atlantic Division by one point. Our newest rivals the Bruins are nipping at our heels and though the season is still young I can already tell that unless something drastic happens the road to the eastern conference title will go through either Detroit or Boston or both.

 

In the front office we’re working feverishly to determine our strategy ahead of the coming offseason. We’ve got approximately $12 million coming off the books which obviously is good to have that cap space but we already know we want to resign several players (if not all) and we also need to look to the future of the franchise. Meaning we need to sign some of our draft picks including Connor McDavid.

 

If that’s not enough, the team has just over $33 million coming off just the NHL roster during the 2016-17 offseason so we’re ultra-conscious of how we need to set the table in the coming months for when the roster suddenly gets flipped upside-down.

 

We don’t know at this time if Pavel, Henrik, or Johan are considering retirement after next season when all of their contracts are up but if so it will be a struggle to replace all that experience and all of that offense. That’s why we’re working our tails off now to make sure the roster is ready when we open the new arena on opening night in October of 2017.

            In my position on the off season is that it’s never too early to start preparing and the next two are going to be absolutely crucial. I’m excited for how we’re were able to bring the current squad together with a nice mix of defensive size, speed and skill with the forwards, and a good combo of veterans and young guys.

            All that patting myself on the back for the 2015-16 squad is short lived as the 2017-18 team will likely look completely different. This coming offseason we have five UFAs and seven RFAs plus the likelihood that we’ll sign Connor McDavid and possibly Michael Dal Colle as well. So fairly hectic but doable right? The rub is that the following year (2018 off season) we’ll have 18 free agents!! We’ve only got nine players that are signed beyond the 2017-18 season.

 

            This happens, these are the challenges of being the general manager of a professional sports franchise and, frankly, I love it. But it does keep me up at night. And the above numbers are what make me believe that this coming off season is so crucial to set the table for 2018.

 

            We’re going to have to target guys like Justin Abdelkader, Joakim Andersson, and Xavier Oulett to set the table for the franchise over the long term. Of course I have confidence in the people I have around me in the front office and I believe in the end we’ll be able to lock down all, or at least, most of our targets. But there is always the outside chance that somehow none of them do & we’ll have to stock up on AHLers and the meager talent that actually does hit the open market. That’s what keeps me thinking at night.

 

            Fortunately right now the team is five points up on Montreal in the division and just four back on Carolina for the best record in the NHL. Unfortunately though we’ve just lost Brendan Smith for two months. Smith was having a very solid season, not quite the breakout performance we’d hoped for but he’s clearly established himself as the clear number two behind Niklas Kronwall on our blue line. Also he’s become a solid vocal leader in the locker room.

 

            We’ve brought up Xavier Oulett to fill in and get him some valuable NHL minutes which is a positive for him but we’ll be missing Smith for sure.

Entry: February 1^st, 2016

           

            The team went 7-3-2 in the month of January and we sent three guys (Datsyuk, Tarasenko, & Kronwall) to the All Star game. The highlight of the twelve game stretch came on the 2^nd when they beat the Bruins in OT 3-2. The game was absolutely thrilling and after the war the two teams engaged in on December 27^th it felt great to run our record against them to 3-0 on the year.

 

            The end of the months leaves us with the second best record in the conference and five points up on Montreal for the division lead. None of this means we’ll be resting on our laurels but it’s looking like we’ll be able to sit comfortably where we are come deadline day. Hopefully this time it won’t bite us in the rear.

           

            One thing that is leaving us smarting right now is our lack of depth in Grand Rapids. Teemu Pulkinnan, Anthony Mantha, and Josh Shalla have all gone down with fairly significant injuries leaving the staff scrambling to find warm bodies to take the ice. I’m now regretting not locking McDavid down for a contract.
