The regular season finale was yesterday where the team beat the Maple Leafs 3-2 to finish the season on a three game win streak. On the season we won 51 games and accrued 108 points both of which are high water marks during my tenure as general manager and I’m certainly proud of these facts though not overly surprised. I went into this season with a lot of confidence in the players we have on the roster and although I thought we had a good chance of winning the President’s trophy, Carolina ran away with it.

Nevertheless we secured a playoff spot comfortably and beat out the Canadiens for the division title by just one point. Montreal actually beat us twice in a row 3-2 each time in very close games in the second to last week of the season. Whole those losses sting, Brendan Smith suffered a concussion in the second game and will be out for the remainder of the season. This is his second major injury on the year and will cause us to shuffle our blue line going into the playoffs.

We’re in a fairly fortunate position depth wise as we can just bring up Danny DeKeyser to fill in. I know he’s hungry to prove himself and the guys in Grand Rapids have reported all season that he’s been keeping a good attitude despite begin back in the AHL. Lots of guys who spend a significant amount of time in the NHL and then are sent down for a spell get down and their play suffers. Sounds like Danny hasn’t let that happen but we’ll have to see.

Our first round opponent is the Boston Bruins after all so we know it will be one hell of a series. I’m nervous about facing a team that is such a challenging matchup for us but I know the players couldn’t be happier. The team is hungry to win the cup and they want to dispatch the Bruins, Canadiens, Hurricanes, and Kings in that order before lifting the trophy.

We decided to stay where we are at the deadline as we basically couldn’t be happier with how the team is showing. 9-4-2 in March and first in the division it’s looking like we’ll be able to secure a 2 seed in the playoffs as long as we can hold of a hot Canadiens team. Carolina ran away with the conference and though there is an outside chance of catching them they’re nine points up as of today.

Henrik Zetterberg really came into form in the March putting up 16 points over the 15 games. He’s been a boost as some of the other veteran’s legs are getting heavy. The younger guys can look at him in the locker room and take after his example.

Looking ahead to the playoffs we have no idea who our first round opponent will be but I personally want to avoid the Bruins at all cost. Their roster is built around bullying opponents all over the ice with grinders and power forwards everywhere. Matching up with teams like Boston is why we were so intent on adding size this past offseason. Its worked out of the course of the year but their style of play just doesn’t allow for our skill guys to find space to get off shots.

In the front office we’ve had advance conversations with Joakim Andersson and Justin Abdelkader and are pleased that both are interested in signing long term deals. Now we’ll just have to find the right price. Abdelkader specifically has been a beast all year on the top line. Anyone you put up there with Datsyuk and Tarasenko is going to accrue points but he plays with such energy that he’s never not in on a scoring play. We’ve been very pleased with his play all year.

On the ice the team went 7-3-0 in February and looked rather sharp despite the dog days of the season being upon us. Coach Blashill is keeping the guys on their toes by occasionally mixing up the line parings and giving some of the veterans nights off here and there.

The early part of the month was punctuated by a crucial eight day four game road trip where we lost the first game 6-1 in Chicago and the second 5-1 in Ottawa. After that though the squad rebounded big time by beating the Canadiens (second place in the Atlantic) in a 3-2 thriller and then the league leading Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in overtime. Both the Montral and Carolina games were broadcast nationally on NBC’s new Hockey Night in America show.

That the guys got smoked by Chicago and Ottawa worry me that they might look past our first round matchup if it’s not a strong opponent, however, I know they’re capable of performing when the bright lights are on them with those big wins to close out the road trip.

We’ve been fortunate recently in terms of injuries for the most part as our only major casualty has been Stephen Weiss going down with a fractured collar bone on the first against the Oilers. Corey Emmerton was the first call up and he’s been a decent fill in though not spectacular. The team misses Weiss’ ability on the penalty kill the most.
