GHL s10 power rankings.

Recommended Posts

To combat some Monday boredom, I went ahead and calculated some average overall stats from GHL teams. Overall doesn't of course paint the full picture of a player's capabilities, and thus is only a vague approximation of what a team can do, but it's the only easily available number for comparison.

Team overalls here are comprised of the average of a team's best 18 skaters (12 centers/forwards, 6 defenders) and the starting goalie. OFF/DEF come from the same players, but are simply rounded up/down to the closest full number for clarity. SG is simply the assumed starting goalie (best overall). Calculations made on day 5 of S10.

Here are the numbers - teams are in order starting from best OVR.

1.  West Chicago Protons (GM: Richard Feynman - bouncer)

OFF: 89 DEF: 91 SG: 95 OVR: 89,5

2.  Deadwood Vandals (GM: Kim Vandaele - koekefix)

OFF: 87 DEF: 89 SG: 96 OVR: 88,4

3.  Harrisonville Sabercats (GM: Hurja Herra)

OFF: 88 DEF: 89 SG: 88 OVR: 87,6

4.  Rome Trojans (GM: Yann Rock)

OFF: 87 DEF: 88 SG: 91 OVR: 87,5

5.  Cedar Rapids Minutemen (GM: Richard Armour)

OFF: 86 DEF: 88 SG: 93 OVR: 87,1

6.  Eldred Elite (GM: Steven Bennett)

OFF: 86 DEF: 89 SG: 93 OVR: 87,0

7.  Canmore Grizzlies (GM: Matt Muffett - themattinthehat)

Also, I think this shows the true difficulty new teams coming into the GHL from SHL face trying to be competitive.  Had you run these numbers on Day 1, I guarantee Pegasus and Heroes would have been much lower averages.   Maybe it is too much to expect newly promoted teams to be competitive in Season 1, but this really quantifies the uphill battle they face on Game 1.

Missing the poffs seems like even more of a disappointment now :D

I guess with the update and ppl refraining from abusing CPU it's going to even out even more in the future instead of the opposite. Atleast I  atm. believe and hope so.

It's not like IRL promoting teams compete for the cup the next year. (excluding top tier players making new team and starting from bottom and winning pretty much 99% of matches till they'r back at the topleague and maybe even could compete there or millionaire burning some millions, but it can't happen in GPH.)

Obviously, I can't use promotion as my excuse any longer, haha.

But what I think would help reduce this 'unfair GHL promotion' bias that some state is inherent in the system and the CPU trading abuses is if we were to have a non-promotion, NHL style league.  No ups or downs (could lock CPU rosters, perhaps) and each season, we know all the 16-32 (whatever) teams in our league will be and the pool of players we are up against.  It's the same game, but gets rid of the biggest complaints players have with the current design.

Anders is working on a NHL style game world.

As for "unfair" promotion position it is going to just be a natural issue jumping from the SHL to the GHL regardless of any trade abuse. So few 80+ overall players are interested in playing in the SHL and those that are willing are exceptionally expensive so SHL teams cant afford many of them. On the other hand 80+ overall players are going to be exclusively bottom of the lineup type of players for GHL teams. That means that there ends up being a notable skill gap between SHL teams and GHL teams that any promoting SHL team has to find a way to overcome. A massive majority of SHL teams try to carry over a large number of players and that just isn't a viable tactic if you actually want to stay in the GHL, especially when the margin for error for a GHL team in terms of making the playoffs or being at risk for demotion has become so small.

By the way I was wanting to do my own version of these before this season started but alas I just couldn't find the time before the first game.

Going to update the rankings once playoffs start. Also revising the formula for team OVR calculation to bring the value of defense up to par with offense, as well as increasing the value of the goalie.

New formula being:

Team OVR = (OFF + (DEF x 2) + (SG x 2))/26

where

OFF = Combined overall of 12 best centers/forwards

DEF = Combined overall of 6 best defenders

SG = Overall of starting goalie (best overall goalie in team)

You know what would also be interesting is you compare the payrolls to outputs (wins, goals, standings, etc).  I do this similar with my guys when looking at contracts, but have never looked outside my roster.  Curious which manager got the "most bang for the buck" with someone and who overpaid for a big dud!  After all, those are the fun real life hockey stories each season.

I can tell you the bolded one, but don't tell the fans and media!
