1930 Hall of Fame Results

In his eighth year on the ballot right fielder Elmer Flick finally crossed the 75% threshold, receiving 85.5% of the vote.  His vote totals increased steadily after receiving 38% on his first year on the ballot.  Flick won three Gold Gloves during his career, nine Silver Slugger Awards, and went to two All-Star Games.

 

A .303 career hitter, Flick drove in 1038 runs during his career, scored 1265, and stole 326 bases.  With 69.5 career WAR, Flick's JAWS score of 54.5 was his only Hall of Fame metric better than average.

The 1931 Hall of Fame ballot is an exciting one, with at least two sure things in Walter Johnson and Tris Speaker, and two other players appearing on the ballot for the first time that have a good shot, Ray Collins and Eddie Collins.

1931 Hall of Fame Results

 

Three players appearing on the ballot for the first time were elected to the Hall of Fame this year.

The leading vote getter was 401 game winner Walter "Big Train" Johnson who appeared on 97.6% of the ballots.  A nine time Matt Kilroy Award winner who had a 401-249 record with a 2.47 ERA.  Johnson added both an MVP Award and Rookie of the Year Award to his trophy case in 1907 when he went 27-13 with a 1.52 ERA as a rookie.  Johnson also struck out 3302 batters in 5867 2/3 innings with 140.8 WAR during his career.  All five of Johnson's Hall of Fame metrics were above average.

The second place finished was Tris Speaker, who appeared on 96.4% of the ballots.  Speaker was a .311 career hitter with 3046 career hits, 1406 RBI, 569 stolen bases, and 1488 runs scored.  Speaker won seven MVP Awards during his career, eight Gold Gloves, and eleven Silver Slugger Awards.  Like Johnson, all five of Speaker's Hall of Fame metrics were above average.

Ray Collins was the third player elected to the Hall of Fame this year with 94% of the votes.  Collins went 305-186 during his career with a 2.74 ERA.  Twice Collins won the Matt Kilroy Award.  Collins had 92.9 WAR during his career and only his HOF Standards score of 61 was better than average, with his Black Ink score exactly average.

1932 Hall of Fame Results

 

Two players were elected to the Hall of Fame this year, both appearing on the ballot for the third time.

Former Pirates' hurler Ray Caldwell led all players with 84.2% of the vote.  During a 14 year career in Pittsburgh Caldwell went 256-191 with a 3.21 ERA, striking out 1659 batters in 4015 2/3 innings.  Caldwell won a pair of championships with Pittsburgh, one Gold Glove, and one Silver Slugger Award.  All five of his Hall of Fame metrics were below average.

Rube Marquard finished second in the voting with 79.9% of the votes.  Marquard played 16 years in the majors, all with the St. Louis Browns, where he went 251-193 with a 2.65 ERA.  He struck out 1966 batters in 4084 1/3 innings and won two Matt Kilroy Awards, one in 1912 (23-13, 2.29) and one in 1915 (21-11, 2.09).  All five of his Hall of Fame metrics were below average.
