Career Game #486

2014 NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional Semifinals (Sweet 16)

Mar 23, 2014: (4) #13 Creighton (27-7, 13-3) vs (1) #1 UCLA (33-1, 18-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, heavy outside, high post
  • Defense: m2m, presses on occasion
  • Key Players: Fr SG Joe Murray 17.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 41% 3PT; Sr PG Eugene Stockman 19.0 ppg, 5.0 apg (tournament averages)
  • Notes: CREIGH riding high on a 16-game winning streak.  They shoot well at 47.2% FG (#14 Nat'l), but thier perimeter defense gives up 39.1% opp 3PT (7th worst Nat'l)

How they got here

  • Automatic selection (Champs, MVC tournament)
  • (2nd Rd) Def Western Illinois, 84-67 (Stockman 22 pts, 6 asts)
  • (3rd Rd) Def #14 Gonzaga, 75-67 (Stockman 16 pts, 5 asts)

1st Half

CREIGH had difficulty breaking our pressure defense.  We jumped off to a 29-5 lead, and never looked back

Halftime: Up 37-19

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 46%, CREIGH 29%
  • Stls: UCLA 8, CREIGH 0

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Mark Pettway 15 pts, 5 stls

2nd Half

SG Mark Pettway went berserk scoring 18 pts in the 1st 7 mins of the 2nd half.  Our defense remained air-tight despite our big lead, and that's what I wanted to see heading into to the more difficult matches of this tournament

Final Score: Creighton - 53, UCLA - 83

Career Game #487

2014 NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional Finals (Elite 8)

Mar 25, 2014: (3) #16 Duke (24-8, 14-4) vs (1) #1 UCLA (34-1, 18-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, balanced, shuffle
  • Defense: m2m, only press in close and late situations
  • Key Players: So C Anthony Walker 15.6 ppg, 10.3 rpg (#5 Nat'l), 3.6 bpg (#1); Jr SG Matt Chambers 15.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg
  • Notes: We lost to DUKE in our season opener, the only that has beaten us the past 2 years.  DUKE leads the nation in blocks at 6.5 bpg.  Chambers is slightly injured, but he might play

How they got here

  • At-large selection (2nd place, ACC regular season)
  • (2nd Round) Def Northeastern, 70-50 (Chambers 19 pts, 5 rebs)
  • (3rd Round) Def Syracuse, 74-55 (Walker 23 pts, 3 rebs)
  • (Sweet 16) Def Wake Forest, 76-61 (Walker 18 pts, 10 rebs, 6 asts, 7 blks)

1st Half

We took advantage of our mismatches.  SG Mark Pettway had an easier time against DUKE's SG Matt Chambers who is not 100% today.  While DUKE's C Anthony Walker was busy defending against our centers, PF Chris Lucas able to get scoring opportunities on the other side of the post.  Chambers only has 2 pts on 1-7 FG; Walker was held scores, although he was dominant on the boards with 11 rebs already to go along with 4 blks

Halftime: Up 37-16

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 52%, DUKE 26%
  • Paint: UCLA 22, DUKE 4

Key Players

  • UCLA: PF Chris Lucas 11 pts; SG Mark Pettway 10 pts, 4 stls

2nd Half

The only thing that worries me coming into the 2nd half is DUKE's offensive rebounding.  So far, it hasn't been a factor

11:52, Up 50-28

SG Mark Pettway heated up from the outside.  Our lead was 34 with 5 mins remaining.  Game over.  DUKE's offense out of sync today; SG Mat Chambers finished with just 7 pts on 3-13 FG while C Anthony Walker had 2 pts (2-10 FT), 15 rebs, 6 blks

Final Score: Duke - 39, UCLA - 80

Career Game #488

2014 NCAA National Semifinals (Final 4)

Apr 1, 2014: (1) #1 UCLA (35-1, 18-0) vs (6) #21 Kansas (25-12, 11-5)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, princeton
  • Defense: 2-3, only press in close and late situations
  • Key Players: Sr C Mike Baily 15.1 ppg, 14.0 rpg; Sr SG John Townsend 18.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg; Fr PG Brian Bayyan 21.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 4.5 apg (tournament averages)
  • Notes: Townsend unlikely to play due to an injury.  KAN ranks high in rebounding at 42.1 rpg (#1 Nat'l), and allows only 36.5% opp FG (#1).  KAN is just an average scoring team at 67.8 ppg and shoots only 39.9% FG.  The absence of Townsend would further affect their offense, but Bayyan is someone we should keep an eye on

How they got here

  • At-large selection (4th place, Big 12 regular season)
  • (2nd Round) Def Kansas St, 79-64 (Townsend 26 pts, 5 rebs)
  • (3rd Round) Def #15 Pepperdine, 60-47 (Townsend 28 pts, 5 rebs, 4 blks)
  • (Sweet 16) Def #7 Oklahoma, 65-56 (Baily 20 pts, 17 rebs, 4 blks)
  • (Elite 8) Def #10 Indiana, 71-58 (PG Brian Bayyan 31 pts, 7 rebs)

1st Half

Everything going right in the 1st half.  We're scoring a lot of pts off KAN's turnovers.  Unbelievable number of turnovers KAN has committed in the 1st half.  By playing a 3-guard lineup most of the time, our outside shooting has helped neutralize KAN's zone defense.  KAN also did not show their supposed-to-be advantage in rebounding

Halftime: Up 56-22

Key stat(s)

  • FG: UCLA 54%, KAN 36%
  • TOs: UCLA 6, KAN 22

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Mark Pettway 29 pts, 9 stls; C Anthony Burton 10 pts,  5 rebs
  • KAN: C Mike Baily 2 pts, 6 rebs, 2 blks; PG Brian Bayyan 6 pts, 12 tos!

2nd Half

KAN must have felt like they were playing 4-on-6 whenever their PG Brian Bayyan was on the floor.  Bayyan gives giving the ball to us, tallying a horrendous 26 turnovers!  This has got to be one of the most lopsided games in Final 4 history

Career Game #489

2014 NCAA National Finals (Championship)

Apr 3, 2014: (3) #4 Houston (32-6, 15-3) vs (1) #1 UCLA (36-1, 18-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: very fast pace, balanced, high post
  • Defense: m2m, only press in close and late situations
  • Key Players: Fr SG Russell Hobbs 20.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg; So SF Sean Robbins 12.5 ppg, 6.4 rpg
  • Notes: A very good defensive team allowing just 58.9 opp ppg (#14 Nat'l) and 38.7% opp FG (#5).  They also force their opponents to 18.2 topg (#5).

How they got here

  • Automatic selection (Champs, CUSA tournament)
  • (2nd Round) Def North Carolina A&T, 79-64 (Hobbs 20 pts, 7 rebs)
  • (3rd Round) Def #6 UNLV, 66-55 (Hobbs 16 pts, 5 rebs)
  • (Sweet 16) Def #18 Georgia Tech, 79-73 (Hobbs 23 pts, 6 rebs, 3 stls)
  • (Elite 8) Def #20 St John's, 75-58 (Hobbs 26 pts, 4 rebs)
  • (Final 4) Def #8 Kentucky, 66-59 (Hobbs 23 pts, 4 rebs)

Comparison (tournament averages)

  • Points For: UCLA 86, HOU 73
  • Points Opp: UCLA 44, HOU 62
  • Rebounds: UCLA 38, HOU 36
  • Turnovers: UCLA 10.8, HOU 11.0
  • Steals: UCLA 15.2, HOU 9.2
  • Blocks: UCLA 5.4, HOU 4.8
  • 3PT%: UCLA 33-78 (42%), HOU 28-106 (26%)

1st Half

Two teams that likes to play fast, but we're doing most of the scoring in the early goings.  HOU's top 2 players, SG Russell Hobbs and SF Sean Robbins both on the bench with 2 fouls each.
11:14, Up 23-11

SG Mark Pettway also picked up his 2nd foul, forcing me to sit him much earlier than I would have wanted to.  But our bench stepped up, and Pettway's prolonged absence on the floor did not hinder us.  We also milked HOU's early situation.  HOU's SG Russell Hobbs and SF Sean Robbins combined for just 3 FG attempts.

Halftime: Up 48-29

Key stat(s)

  • FT: UCLA 16-17, HOU 3-6
  • Bench: UCLA 27, HOU 8

Key Players

  • UCLA: SG Mark Pettway 10 pts, 2 stls; SG Dickey Walton 10 pts, 2 blks
  • KAN: SG Russell Hobbs 2 pts; SF Sean Robbins 1 pt

2nd Half

SG Mark Pettway "only" 13 pts so far, but his biggest contribution is on the defensive side against HOU's SG Russell Hobbs.  Hobbs, who is averaging 22 ppg in this tournament, limited to just 2 pts so far on 1-6 FG.

10:19, Up 61-41

We got into penalty.  HOU trying to build up momentum for one last push, down by 17 with less than 6 mins left.  And then, SG Mark Pettway hits back-to-back 3s to quash away any hopes by HOU

4:40, Up 76-53

My 4 seniors were on the floor to finish the game.  The players' commitment to defense the past 6 games has been nothing short of admirable, and I couldn't have asked for more.

Back-to-back national champs!

Final Score: Houston - 55, UCLA - 80
