QUINN's slow pace game was evident in the 1st half, but their offensive execution in disarray, forcing a lot of bad shots.  QUINN also committed 9 turn overs.  Our 2 starting big men dominated the inside, combining for 19 pts and 11 rebs

Career Game #19

Current streaks on the line:

  • 5 game home win streak

Jan 23, 2001: Norfolk St (12-6, 4-3) @ Delaware St (14-4, 6-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, outside, some freedom, triangle
  • Defense: 2-3, rarely press
  • Key Players: Jr SG Erik Carroll 9.8 ppg
  • Notes: No double digit scorer but each starter averages at least 8 ppg.  NORST's defense concedes just 37.6% opp FG (#4 Nat'l)

1st Half

NORST's defense came prepared against our inside plays; both C Brandon Braun and C Jamal Swift held scoreless.  We got our production mostly from our guards with their perimeter shooting.

Halftime: Tied at 37

Key stat(s)

  • 3PT: DELST 7-15, NORST 1-3
  • Pts in the paint: DELST 10, NORST 12

Key Players

  • DELST: SG Kevin Stokes 17 pts, 3 3s

2nd Half

We opened up the 2nd half with a 10-0 run; C Brandon Braun finally getting his 1st basket.  SG Kevin Stokes continues to wax hot from the outside, adding 10 more pts here in the 2nd half for his game high of 27.

11:03: Up 55-45

NORST's defense starting to make its presence felt.  PG Sidney Petteway has fouled out, and 2 other starters with 4 fouls.  This is not looking good

4:10, Up 58-54

SG Kevin Stokes buries another 3!  We badly needed that basket.  Up 7.  C Brandon Braun gets a block, and ball is going to our favor.  SF Anthony Jefferson got fouled on the act of shooting.  Jefferson makes both FTs.  Up 9.  A turn over by NORST.  SG Lewis Lepore makes a 3 from top of the circle!  An 8-0 run.  Another turn over for NORST.  Stokes drives, but he missed.  Time running out for NORST now

2:04, Up 66-54

C Jamal Swift with a steal.  On our play, SG Kevin Stokes added another triple!  Up 15 with less than 2 mins left.  NORST got a 3 back.  We slowed down the game, used up a lot of clock, and hold on for the win.  C Brandon Braun with a career low 3 pts, but the performance of our 2 SGs more than made it up

Final Score: Norfolk St - 58, Delaware St - 71

Career Game #20

Current streaks on the line:

  • 6 game home win streak

Jan 28, 2001: North Carolina A&T (11-8, 6-2) @ Delaware St (15-4, 7-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: slow pace, balanced, some freedom, motion
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: So SG Brian Dillon 14.5 ppg, 52% 3PT
  • Notes: NCAT best 3PT shooting team in the conference at 42.4% (#5 Nat'l)

1st Half

We went down 0-9, and then came up with a 9-0 run of our own.  Game has been close since then until the end, where we scored the last 10 pts of the 1st half.  I spent a lot of time complaining to the refs, as we were called for a lot of fouls

Halftime: Up 40-34

Key stat(s)

  • Turn overs: DELST 3, NCAT 8
  • Fouls: DELST 11, NCAT 6

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 18 pts, 3 rebs

2nd Half

Our defense has focused on minimizing NCAT's 3pt shooting strength, and that has been the difference thus far; NCAT just 2-8 3PT so far.  And perhaps because of my excessive "working of the refs" in the 1st half, calss have been tilted to the other side now as NCAT goes to the penalty early.  Love these refs ...

11:38: Up 56-43

C Brandon Braun and SG Kevin Stokes' production enough to keep NCAT at bay.  We're still leading by 16 with 2:34 left.  Consecutive turn overs by NCAT ended any small hope of a miracle comeback for them.  We took good care of the ball today; even PG Sidney Petteway had zero turn overs

Final Score: North Carolina A&T - 66, Delaware St - 80

Career Game #21

Current streaks on the line:

  • 3 game win streak

Feb 1, 2001: Delaware St (16-4, 8-1) @ Morgan St (8-12, 6-3)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, some freedom, flex
  • Defense: 2-3, press at points
  • Key Players: Jr PF James Costa 9.6 ppg, 8.7 rpg (2nd in MEAC)
  • Notes: MORG may not have a high powered offense, but they are winning because of defense; 40.5% opp FG (#32 Nat'l)

1st Half

A very disappointing 1st half in terms of taking care of the ball.  MORG has taken control of this game with their defense.

Halftime: Down 32-46

Key stat(s)

  • Turn overs: DELST 12, MORG 6

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 12 pts, 2 blks
  • MORG: PF James Costa 6 pts, 5 rebs, 3 stls

2nd Half

Our deficit has even increased.  18 turn overs now.  And our shooting in the 2nd half has taken a nose dive.  SG Kevin Stokes scoreless at 0-11 FG, even missing a break away layup earlier.

9:43: Down 38-59

Topping 75 pts is very much possible for us, even on a road game.  But with 22 turn overs, we didn't had enough possessions to turn this game around.  2 road losses in the conference, both were blow outs

Final Score: Delaware St - 58, Morgan St - 75

Box Scores

Post game observations

  • (+): C Brandon Braun played better this time (9-18 FG), as compared to the last time he faced a predominantly zone defense.  The problem is our guards had difficulty getting him the ball without committing a turn over
  • (-): Consistency; last game we had just 9 turn overs, now we had 22

Career Game #22

Current streaks on the line:

  • 7 game home win streak

Feb 4, 2001: MD Eastern Shore (12-9, 7-3) @ Delaware St (16-5, 8-2)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, outside, lots of freedom, princeton
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Sr SG Sonny Martin 13.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg
  • Notes: MDES leads the conference with 7.1 spg

1st Half

Our turn overs giving us problems once again, putting us down by as many as 12.  We got our act together, and finally grabbed the lead at 34-33.  However, MDES had a strong 8-2 finish which included a couple of triples.  Those turn overs we had were turned to a lot of easy fast break pts by MDES

Halftime: Down 36-41

Key stat(s)

  • Fast break pts: DELST 4, MDES 16
  • 2nd chance pts: DELST 4, MDES 12

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 10 pts, 5 rebs
  • MDES: SG Sonny Martin 10 pts

2nd Half

MDES hitting 4 of their 5 attempts from deep, putting even more pressure on us

15:41: Down 46-56

Deficit increased to 12.  It seems MDES can't stop hitting from the outside.  C Brandon Braun doing his best just to keep us within striking distance.  We finally get a couple of stops

10:27: Down 59-65

Cut down the lead to 3.  Gave C Brandon Braun a bit of rest, and MDES increased their lead to 7.  Braun back on the floor with less than a min of rest in the 2nd half.  We will go heavy inside now.  MDES in the penalty.  We can't afford to just trade baskets.  took a while to get the deficit back down to 3 again

5:27: Down 72-75

Getting a coupe more stops.  Tied the game with a basket from C Brandon Braun.  Braun later got a split to give us the lead.  We get another chance to build on our momentum further, but we threw away our possession

3:57: Up 76-75

MDES hits a 3, their 9th of the game.  Down 2.  C Brandon Braun missed inside.  We get a steal, and scored on the break!  Tied game.  MDES missed.  Chance to regain the lead here, but another turn over.  Aarrghh.

2:39: Tied at 78

MDES hits a jumper plus a foul.  They convert the bonus FT.  Timeout

2:24, Down 78-81

C Jamal Swift with a spin move, and scores inside.  Down 1.  MDES missed a 3, but they get the offensive rebound.  Putback is no good, but there was a foul.  MDES hits both.  Down 3.  SG Kevin Stokes puts up a 3, and its good!  We're tied once again.  We need a stop.  We failed once again, as MDES able to score inside.  Timeout

1:36: Down 83-85

C Brandon Braun called for traveling.  That was huge.  But we're not yet out of this.  We press, but MDES breaks it and scores on the break!  Timeout

1:02: Down 83-87

I switched to balanced focus.  We have 4 shooters on the floor.  Bu we gave it back to C Brandon Braun who was isolated down low, and this time Braun made sure.  Down 2.  A turn over by MDES.  I called my last timeout

0:41: Down 85-87

SG Lewis Lepore puts up a 3.  Miss.  MDES gets the rebound.  0:25 remaining.  We tried to get a steal, but we couldn't.  With 0:12 left, we had no choice but to foul.  MDES makes both.  2 possession game.  We missed a 3, and so goes our chance.  2nd loss in a row.  We couldn't make stops when we needed them.  MDES with 6 players in double figures

Final Score: MD Eastern Shore - 89, Delaware St - 85

Post game observations

  • (+): Our output 85 pts is even higher than our nation-leading scoring average, which makes this loss even more perplexing
  • (-): Even considering MDES' hot shooting in the 2nd half, I think we were able to match or even slightly ahead in terms of half court offense.  What gave MDES the advantage was those "extra" pts - 15 2nd chance and 22 fast break pts.  We got outworked today

  • Notes: We had to come back from a 16 pt deficit to beat CSC the last time we met

1st Half

We took care of the ball this time, and was able to pound the ball inside to C Brandon Braun.  We played with more sense of urgency, as evidenced by our rebounds.  CSC not able to keep up with our offense, despite making 7 3s

Career Game #24

Current streaks on the line:

  •

Feb 11, 2001: Delaware St (17-6, 9-3) @ Florida A&M (13-10, 7-5)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, not many freedom, high post
  • Defense: 2-3, press at points
  • Key Players: Sr SG Clinton Price 18.7 ppg (#2 MEAC), 4.7 rpg
  • Notes: FLAM had 30+ attempts from 3 in each of their last 2 games (both lost)

1st Half

We got the raw end of the calls.  Early in the penalty, and worse, C Brandon Braun picked up his 3rd foul before midway of the 1st half.  Our guards kept us in the game, knocking down outside shots

Halftime: Down 38-39

Key stat(s)

  • Fouls: DELST 13, FLAM 4

Key Players

  • DELST: SG Lewis Lepore 15 pts, 5 asts

2nd Half

Can't get any tighter than this; no team has led by more than 2 pts here in the 2nd half.  Miraculously, we haven't been called for a foul so far in the 2nd half

8:51: Up 57-56

We made a string of turn overs, at least 6 during the last 3 mins.  All of a sudden, we have 6 team fouls

3:53: Down 59-63

We got into penalty.  FLAM makes 2 FTs.  Down 6.  C Brandon Braun got fouled.  Braun missed 2 FTs.  We got called for another foul; 8 fouls in the last 5 mins.  FLAM added 2 more FTs.  This is slipping away.  Timeout

3:18: Down 59-67

C Jamal Swift scored inside.  Down 6.  A miss by FLAM.  Short jumper by PG Sidney Petteway is good.  Down 4.  C Brandon Braun gets a block, and recovers the ball.  PG Sidney Petteway missing a 3.  FLAM's SG Clinton Price drives and scores.  Timeout

1:07: Down 63-69

I fielded in a more perimeter oriented team.  SG Lewis Lepore missed.  We started fouling and shooting 3s, but FLAM was decent from the line, shooting 24-34 today.  Another loss.  We were still very much in the game, until those turn overs killed us again.  C Brandon Braun scored 5 pts early in the 2nd half, but has been a non factor on offense for the most part of the game (just 7 FG attempts)

Final Score: Delaware St - 66, Florida A&M - 75

Post game observations

  • (+): Our shooting was decent enough; in fact our FG% was higher than that of FLAM.  When we faced next a team that plays zone, we'll go for a more balanced offense focus
  • (-): We committed 25 fouls; for a team that has only 7 players receiving major minutes, we can't afford getting into foul trouble

Career Game #27

Current streaks on the line:

  • 2 game win streak

Feb 22, 2001: Delaware St (19-7, 11-4)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: slow pace, balanced, not many freedom, 5 out
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Fr PG Linton McKenzie 12.0 ppg
  • Notes: McKenzie was still slightly injured when we last played them, but still scored 19 pts in 13 mins.  We have lost 3 of our last 4 road games

1st Half

We're playing very flat on defense, perhaps due to the fact that this is a non-bearing game for us.  We're locked in at 2nd place, and MDES is assured of 1st since they own the tie break against us.  But still, we have a chance to salvage this game and bring some momentum towards the conference tournament

Halftime: Down 38-45

Key stat(s)

  • FG: DELST 54%, LIPS 57%

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 17 pts, 3 rebs

2nd Half

LIPS opened up the 2nd half with 6-0 run, and we got down by 13.  We played catch up for the entire 2nd half.  Still down by 11 with 4 mins to go.  But we could only get 1 FG the remainder of the game.  Our defense clearly not in this game.  Looking forward to the conference tournament, which is what matters most

Box Scores

Career Game #28

2001 MEAC Tournament

Mar 2 2001: (10) Bethune-Cookman (11-17, 5-11) vs (2) Delaware St (19-8, 11-5)

BETH scored an upset win over (7) Morgan St in the last round

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, inside, not many freedom, 5 out
  • Defense: 2-3, press at points
  • Key Players: Sr SG Johnny Jackson 13.5 ppg
  • Notes: We swept BETH this season, but both games were very competitive.  BETH made 10 3s in their last game against MORG

1st Half

This time our defense has done its job, not only forcing turnovers, but also we defended the interior.  Scoring has been balanced, with 4 players having at least 7 pts each

Halftime: Up 38-26

Key stat(s)

  • FG: DELST 46%, BETH 32%
  • Turn overs: DELST 6, BETH 11

Key Players

  • DELST: SF Anthony Jefferson 10 pts, 2 3s
  • BETH: SG Johnny Jackson 9 pts

2nd Half

PG Sidney Petteway picked up his 4th foul early in the 2nd half.  We continue to keep BETH under 40% FG, and on the other hand, we're making a decent amount of outside shots

11:58: Up 51-34

Fouls have mounted up on us, with 3 guards having 4 fouls each.   Still a safe lead, but anything can happen esp since we're in the penalty

5:44: Up 58-44

BETH cut down our lead 11 earlier, but PG Sidney Petteway and SG Kevin Stokes able to deliver clutch baskets

3:12 Up 66-51

BETH made a turn over, and then missed their FTs on consecutive possessions.  That should do it.  We slowed down the game, and move on to the next round

Final Score: Bethune-Cookman - 51, Delaware St - 72

Box Scores

Jefferson 17, 5, 2, 4 stls, 3 3s (*)

Stokes 16, 5, 1

Braun 13, 11, 2, 2 stls, 3 tos

Lepore 12, 4, 3, 2 3s

Swift 5, 7, 0, fouled out

Petteway 5, 1, 6, 5 tos

Murphy 4, 1, 1

Team Stats

FG: 47-36%

Rebs: Even

Asts: +2

TOs: -9

Pts in paint: +8

2nd chance: +8

Fast break: +6

Post game observations

  • (+): Defense stepping up; aside from 22 turn overs by BETH, we made it difficult for them to get good looks outside (just 3-17 3PT)
  • (-): Foul trouble, but fortunately it didn't became a factor

Top seed MD Eastern Shore was upset by 8-seed Belmont.  Race to the title is wide open

Mar 3 2001: (3) Norfolk St  (19-9, 10-6) vs (2) Delaware St (20-8, 11-5)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: normal pace, outside, some freedom, triangle
  • Defense: 2-3, rarely press
  • Key Players: Jr SG Erik Carroll 10.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg
  • Notes: We won in our only meeting this season, but NORST has gone 7-2 since that loss.  NORST still the best defensive team in the conference, both #1 in opp ppg (61.5) and opp FG (38.9%).  C Brandon Braun had his career-low 3 pts in that game against NORST

1st Half

NORST still doing a relatively good job defending against C Brandon Braun (8 pts) but our guards are stepping up once again.  NORST wants to game to be a defensive battle, but we're having the better defense so far

Halftime: Up 35-27

Key stat(s)

  • FG: DELST 48%, NORST 31%

Key Players

  • DELST: SG Kevin Stokes 14 pts, 3 3s

2nd Half

A 12-3 run to start the 2nd half; C Brandon Braun scored 3 inside baskets during that stretch.  We led by 17.  NORST momentarily cut their deficit to 12, but we responded with a 13-2 blast, evaporating any chance of a comeback.  Reserves got plenty of action in the end.

Final Score: Norfolk St - 58, Delaware St - 76

  • (-): Would be better if can cut down some of that 15 turn overs

Career Game #30

2001 MEAC Tournament Finals

Mar 4 2001: (2) Delaware St (21-8, 11-5) vs (8) Belmont (15-15, 8-8)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, lots of freedom, motion
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Fr SF Jaquay Young 12.2. ppg, 5.5 rpg
  • Notes: BEL gave us a good beating in our only meeting this season, scoring 88 pts.  BEL has scored 80+ pts 5 times already this season, so more than ever, we need to bring our best defensive effort

1st Half

We came up with a good start, and C Brandon Braun on attack mode, forcing BEL to give up 17 fouls.  We led by as many as 17, but BEL had a good finish, and showing they have the capability to turn this game around in the 2nd half

Halftime: Up 44-34

Key stat(s)

  • FT: DELST 16-24, BEL 8-10
  • 3PT: DELST 6-14, BEL 0-2

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 17 pts, 8 rebs, 9-14 FT

2nd Half

We went exclusively zone in the 2nd half, knowing that BEL is not comfortable taking outside shots.  BEL made just 1 of their 1st 10 attempts from deep, before making 4 during garbage time when the game was already long decided.  We led by as many as 27.  C Brandon Braun, who scored only a combined 27 pts during the 1st 2 games of the tournament, has surpassed that total in this game.  SG Kevin Stokes also had a sensational 2nd half.  Overall, this was probably the finest game we played all season, saving the best when it mattered most.

Career Game #31

2001 NCAA Tournament 2nd Round (64)

Mar 16 2001: (13) Delaware St (22-8, 11-5) vs (4) #11 Memphis (25-7, 18-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, lots of freedom, shuffle
  • Defense: m2m, press a lot
  • Key Players: Jr C Kyle Granville 10.7 ppg, 9.0 rpg
  • Notes: MEM had a 21 game win streak before losing in the CUSA tournament finals

1st Half

Judging from MEM's 64% FG performance alone, one would think this is already a blow out.  But C Brandon Braun has other things in mind.  Playing in front of a national audience, Braun put up 33 pts and grabbed 6 offensive rebounds.  If we can just put up a sequence of defensive stops in the 2nd half, and continue to go to Braun offense, we might have a chance to pull this off

Halftime: Down 43-45

Key stat(s)

  • FG: DELST 40%, MEM 64%
  • Off Rebounds: DELST 10, MEM 3

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 33 pts, 8 rebs

2nd Half

Defense has been the priority of both teams in the 2nd half.  C Brandon Braun getting limited touches.

11:28: Down 52-54

We got into the penalty; PG Sidney Petteway and SG Lewis Lepore both with 4 fouls.  I gave C Brandon Braun just 1 min of rest here in the 2nd half

7:35, Down 62-63

We tied the game twice, but MEM scores each time.  After knotting the score again, we made a stop.  We went back to C Brandon Braun, he delivers once more, and we take the upper hand!  Braun with 47 pts

5:13, Up 69-67

Lead was exchanged twice.  Teams also traded turn overs.  Its going down the wire here

3:52, Up 71-69

MEM with possession.  They missed a shot; we grabbed the rebound.  We cant get it to C Brandon Braun.  C Jamal Swift takes it inside; blocked.  MEM recovers the ball.  MEM missing again.  Timeout

2:48, Up 71-69

Pass intended to C Brandon Braun was stolen, and MEM scores on the break.  Tied game.  C Jamal Swift missed.  We got called for a foul.  SG Lewis Lepore fouls out.  MEM makes both FTs.  Timeout

2:15, Down 71-73

I keep on encouraging the team.  Lots of time left.  SF Anthony Jefferson drives.  Miss.  MEM with the rebound.  We're scoreless in the last 3 minutes.  MEM missed on their next possession.  Another chance here.  But we turned the ball over.  Foul; PG Sidney Petteway fouls out.  MEM splits.  Timeout

1:21, Down 71-74

SG Kevin Stokes shot was blocked!  MEM with 9 blks in the game.  MEM with the ball.  MEM scores a jumper.  Timeout

0:40, Down 71-76

We would need a 3.  PG Brandon Perry missed a 3.  We gave up a foul.  MEM makes both FTs and were down 3 possessions.  We missed another 3.  Season over.  We were held scoreless in the last 4+ mins.  It was still a gallant effort.  Outstanding freshman season for C Brandon Braun.  Looking forward to his improvements in the off season, plus with a deeper team, we'll make some noise again next year

Final Score: Delaware St - 71, Memphis - 81

Box Scores

Braun 47, 8, 1, 3 stls

Lepore 7, 3, 5, 3 stls, 5 tos
