NJD - 2 EDM - 4 The Oilers opened with 3 ES goals in the first period. RW Nail Yakupov scored his second goal of the game in the second period and LW Linus Omark had a goal and an assist as Edmonton proceeded to hold off the Devils despite giving up 2 third period goals and 31 shots overall.
NYR - 0 LAK - 2 The Rangers traveled west to meet the Kings at Staples Center and entered the game undefeated. They left with a .500 record. Kings G Ben Scrivens backstopped the Kings, stopping all 23 shots and first period goals by RW Jeff Carter and RW Dustin Brown would be all the offense Los Angeles needed tonight.

In Other News
TOR - The Maple Leafs continue wheeling and dealing and this time their dance partner was the Ottawa Senators. Promising blueliner D Jake Gardinier (6.5b/7.5b) and C Tony Cameranesi (4.0e/6.0e) are headed to Ottawa in exchange for seasoned greybeard 36 y/o D Joe Corvo (6.5b/6.5b) and college prospect LW Jeff Costello (5.0e/6.0e). There are widely varying opinions blasting out of both towns sports radio stations. Gardinier,a former first round pick certainly has the pedigree to make this a steal of a deal. Both Corvo and Gardinier are in the last year of approximately $900K deals
DAL - Reports this morning put 21 y/o D Patrick Nemeth (6.5d/7.5d) on the shelf up to a week after getting injured in practice. Nemeth has not seen game action yet for the Stars, so no roster moves are expected.

Oct 8th - Trade Interest

FLA- I'm talking game planning against Philly tonight with the coaches over coffee in the hotel restaurant, when my cell phone rings and it's Jo (the shapely and attractive office assistant back in Sunrise), who after a few questions then tells me a man named MacTavish called and he just wants to talk.

I quickly excuse myself and go back into my hotel room, knowing its Craig MacTavish and he is Edmonton's GM. Maybe my first trade offer? I have put feelers out and something is coming back a week later? Excellent!!!

After greetings and salutations, Craig (he told me to call him that...) says he hears I'm unhappy with a few players on my team and he's is in a similar position. I ask who and he coyly replies "I called you to find out who you have available..." I see..." is my non-witty reply (wishing I didn't sound like a kid asking for his first date...) Finally I figure enough of this and just tell him that I was considering Captain Brian Campbell and Scottie Upshall, but I now am keeping Campbell as he has proved himself worthy of his contract. Craig replies asking if there is anybody else and I tell him everyone is available for the right price...

The call concludes with him e-mailing his NHL list of players available to my phone and asking for the same from me. I return to the meeting and tell the coaches and immediately Coach Ramsay blurts "Hemsky!". After a few seconds both Coach McCabe and Coach Pauwelyn are agreeing we could/should pursue this opportunity to upgrade our offense. I assign Coach Pauwelyn and call scout Frank Mahavolich to look at Hemsky and report back ASAP.

Since I figure MacTavish is going to try to take advantage of the new guy, I call the owner and tell him I want to make a trade offer of Upshall for Hemsky. Of course the first question is "how much more is Hemsky?" I didn't do that homework (BAD GM!!!) and I tell him its around a million point five, but I would have to check. (luckily I hit the number on the head, thank you lucky stars!) Surprising me the owner tells me as long as I don't CAP out the budget and call him before making the trade, he's ok with it just as long as I don't give up any draft picks... I agree and hang up. As I leave the room I send the e-mail to MacTavish asking if he will take Upshall for Hemsky straight up. There has been no reply and its just before game time

Game 3 @ Philadelphia Oct 8
Game three of the season opening road trip, one more at Tampa Bay, then back to Sunrise for a couple games in the friendly confines... As agreed at the morning skate Coach Ramsey wanted to dress LW Jesse Winchester (6.5a/6.5a) in place of LW Sean Bergenheim (6.5a/6.5a)to see if the defense was any better from that position. Obviously unhappy Sean Bergenheim just shrugged and said he was a professional and just needed to work harder to gain our trust. Jesse Winchester was obviously delighted and had a noticeable jump in his stride at practice.

The first period was a lot of middle ice play by both teams, until a quick line change called by Coach Ramsey caught the Flyers with only one defenseman back and RW Bobby Butler scored his first goal of the season. Only 38 seconds later another quick line change and a great clearing pass by D Eric Gudbranson led to a tic-tac-toe goal by Butler with his linemates again picking up the assists. That quieted the Wells Fargo Center and the normally boisterous crowd never got back in the game.

The final score was 4 -0 and First Star G Tim Thomas turned away all 28 shots. LW Jonathan Huberdeau scored the Panthers first short handed tally this season late in the third period and the Panthers peppered Flyers starter G Steve Mason with 44 shots.

COL - 6 TOR - 1 The Avalanche used two PP goals and three goals in the third period to pull away and dominate the Maple Leafs. Six different players scored for the Av's and G Semyon Varlamov (8.0c/8.0c) stopped 28 or 29 shots for his third straight win
CAR - 5 PIT -3 LW Nathan Gerbe (6.5b/7.0b) and RW Alexander Semin (8.0b/8.0b)each scored twice as Pittsburgh remained winless this season. The Hurricanes G Cam Ward (8.0b/8.0b) had to virtually stand on his head as the Penguins fired 14 shots in the final 20 minutes and yet it was the Hurricanes who scored the final two goals on just five shots to get and seal the win.
NJD - 3 VAN - 2 All five goals were scored in a exciting first period, then tight checking defenses and great goaltending by both backup goalies over the next 40 minutes made the score final.
ARZ - 7 NYI - 5 Coyotes players RW Radim Vrbata (7.5b/7.5b) had two goals and an assist, and D Derek Morris (7.5c/7.5c) contributed three assists in a wide open affair that wasn't as close as the score indicated.
TBY - 3 BUF - 4 the surprising Sabres are 3-1 on the season after getting by visiting Tampa Bay on a shootout winning goal by RW Steve Ott (7.5c/7.5c) Lightning RW JT Brown (6.5c/6.5c)scored two goals and an assist helping secure a point for the so far winless Bolts.
NYR - 5 SJS - 1 The Rangers continued their west coast swing, this time dropping in the Shark Tank otherwise known as HP Pavilion. The Blueshirts showed no kindness to the host team, jumping out to a three to zero score after one period and just increasing the pressure throughout the game. G Henrik Lundqvist (8.5c/8.5c) made 29 saves and brought his GAA to 1.33 and his save percentage to an astounding .952 on the season!
MIN - 3 NAS - 1 Twelve minor penalties set the tempo of this game as all three Wild goals were scored via the PP. The outcome was in doubt until the last 10 minutes of the third period when four minor Predator penalties gave Minnesota its opportunity to ice the game and they did.

CHI - 6 STL - 3 Bitter rivals clashed at Scottrade Center and the visitors used a second period for the ages to crush the Blues magical start of the season. Eight goals were scored by the teams in the second stanza, five of the goals went the Black Hawk's way, including two PP goals and an PP assist by C Jonathan Toews who surprisingly ended up a -2 on the night.
MTL - 5 CGY - 6 This matchup may not inspire a rivalry like the Maple Leafs for the Canadiens, but don't tell the Flames that! 6 of the 9 penalties called were against the Flames and Montreal capitalized three times but still fell short against this inspired club. 18 y/o youngster C Sean Monahan (6.5b/8.0b) scored twice and D Chris Butler (7.0d/7.0d) had a PP tally and an assist ending with a +2 on the evening. LW Max Pacioretty (8.0b/8.0b) placed himself squarely in the scoring race with a hat trick including two PP goals.
OTT - 2 LAK - 0 G Craig Anderson (8.0b/8.0b) sparkled in a shutout performance, stopping 27 shots. RW Erik Condra (6.5d/6.5d) and C Jason Spezza (8.0d/8.0d) scored ES markers and each team squandered 5 power play opportunities in a chippy game.

Group Participation Blow...
For all the Monty Python fans....

Anyway - FEEDBACK!!! I see over 700 reads and greatly appreciate it, but no written feedback is disconcerting. I really want to hear what you think - yes even if its criticisms (constructive criticism preferred). I am certainly not a professional writer, but I am drawing on quips and comments I've heard over the 40+ years I've watched hockey games played and read the articles in the paper. AM I too chatty? Too little info? too many .jpg's? poor editing/ cropping skills? ( I KNOW I'm guilty of that one!)

I consistently see in Dynasties here and elsewhere that there is not enough background or stories to the teams. The second thing is people ask for updates on other teams than the Dynasty is portraying. I am attempting to do a nightly summary of all the games in the NHL and just by doing that, some anomalies I have discovered myself are that WAY more players having two goal games in the first week than happened IRL. Goalies play an additional two seconds in the games than the game clock allows. Reserve goalies pressed into service during games do not get credit for the game in the summaries. That goalies apparently never get pulled for an extra attacker during games. are these gamebreakers? Not hardly.

For those that want NHL stats I will be posting the jpg's of the skater and goalie leaders pages on the 1st and 15th of each month. While I have my own style and certainly some will not like my writing, I am willing to adapt and try to give the readers what they want.

Thanks for reading!

Game 4 @ Tampa Bay Oct 10th

Tired of living out of suitcases, the team is very lackluster at morning skate. The coaching staff is just as bad and after an hour of this nonsense Bonehead has seen enough, he calls the practice to a close, tells the team to get some rest and be back on the buses at 430pm.
There is a particularly nasty exchange between Coach McCabe and Coach Tyulin but they break apart before Bonehead can make it across the room to them. Neither offers any reason for the exchange just a difference of opinion they both say. Coach Ramsay suggests C Shawn Matthias (6.5/6.5)get a break, so C Drew Shore (6.0/7.0)can shake off some rust. LW Sean Bergenheim is reinstated to the lineup and LW Jesse Winchester goes back to the bench with a pat on the butt. Neither defensive coach has any recommendations for changes.

The opening period is very similar to the previous three games with a decent shot advantage and this time no score after one period. The second period sees Scott Gomez stuff home a PP rebound for his second goal of the season as the equalizer from an earlier TB score. Shots after two periods are a comfortable 26-17 lead.

During the intermission the earlier words between the coaches flare back up again and this time Bonehead is there to hear it... Coach Tyutin is convinced we need to move our best defensive pairing to the top line and give them major minutes to keep the shots down in the third period, Coach McCabe is believing the current set-up will work fine and the previous games are history. Bonehead sets them both apart and agrees they will modify the lineup but D Gudbranson and D Weaver will play the second pairing and with equal minutes to D Campbell and D Gilbert .

The grand defensive plan doesn't work out quite the way we hoped. Although the Bolts shots on goal are limited to just six in the third period, the Gudbranson/Weaver pairing are on the ice when Tampa scores the go ahead goal with 5:50 remaining. We don't get the equalizer and the Lightning are off the schneid with thier first win of the season.

The post game press conference is short and Bonehead admits he's not happy with the offense getting 36 shots and only scoring one goal, but notes the goal is a PP goal and obviously the coaching had everything to do with that. The room breaks up with laughter as intended. Bonehead closes out the conference with the reminder that they get some home cooking tomorrow against Pittsburgh and the chance to correct the problem

COL - 3 BOS - 2 The Bruins can't make a early first period goal by D Zdeno Chara (9.0c/9.0c) hold up and fall behind in the second period to three ES goals by the Av's. Both goalies close the door in the third period and the Avalanche continues its four game unbeaten streak.
ARZ - 2 DET - 3 G Jimmy Howard (7.5d/8.0d) let in 2 PP goals but stopped 38 other shots in getting a narrow win over the Coyotes. He is another goalie on a tear, sporting a 1.33 GAA and an impressive .963 save percentage.
WPG - 1 MIN - 2 The Wild made a two goal first period lead hold up and Josh Harding stopped 35 of 36 shots to drop the hard luck Jets to 1 - 3 on the season.
NYR - 4 ANA - 1 LW Benoit Pouliot scored first then spent the rest of the game in the penalty box, or so it seemed, as he had three minor penalties in the game. G Henrik Lundqvist is still crazy good allowing one goal and lowering his GAA to 1.25 and upping his save percentage to .957.
CBL - 3 BUF - 4 The surging Buffalo Sabres won for the fourth time, this time building a three goal lead and then surviving a furious third period comeback effort by the Blue Jackets. First Star LW Thomas Vanek (8.0d/8.0d) had a goal and an assist in the win.
MTL - 2 EDM - 3 The Habs used a two goal performance by LW Alex Galchenyuk to get an OT point in a downright nasty penalty filled game. 11 penalties were called in the regular session, seven against Montreal, before RW Jordan Eberle (8.0b/8.0b) scored a PP goal on yet another Montreal penalty in OT.
CAR - 3 WAS - 1 The Hurricanes won behind 29 y/o G Cam Ward (8.0b/8.0b) who turned away 35 or 36 shots to get his third win.
TOR - 3 NAS - 2 Maple leaf C Nazem Kadri (7.5b/8.0b) and Predator C Mike Fisher (7.5c/7.5c) both scored once and had an assist in this shootout thriller. *** Shootout was wrong, extra TOR shooter scored after first 6 was allowed even though only TOR. Cody Franson scored on 5th shot. ***
SJS - 2 VAN - 5 Canucks RW Alex Burrows (7.5d/7.5d) and RW David Booth (6.5d/6.5d) both scored twice in a easy win over the Sharks at home. Booth's goal a game pace through the first five games cannot possibly last, but is good at keeping him a scoring leader in the NHL race.

Game 5 vs Pittsburgh Oct 11th
Walking in at 7:30 am Bonehead is surprised to see both defensive coaches have obviously been there at least a few hours. Questioning whats up, they say they worked out a compromise plan for the defense and want me to sign off on it. Campbell/Gilbert remains the top pair with Gudbranson/Weaver moving up to second pairing and Kulikov/Gilroy dropping to third pairing. Since both coaches agree with this plan I quickly agree to try it tonight. "Thats not all" they say They want a little extra muscle in the lineup tonight so Colby Robak will play in place of Gilroy who is our least physical D man. The minutes played will strongly skew towards the top four with Kulikov and Robak essentially spelling the top four. Again its their show I tell them. Coach Ramsay will be out today on an approved leave day. (HIPPA rules you understand) but will be there tonight, he left his changes in an envelope and I implement the changes before the morning skate. C Gomez and LW Fleischmann move to the top line, while youngsters LW Huberdeau and C Bjugstad move to 2nd line to counteract the "Crosby effect".

The first period is a very nice surprise, we are finally outshot for the period 12-10, but four of our shots find the back of the net! Most surprisingly the new defensive pairing result in Kulikov/Robak being a plus three for the period and Kulikov scoring just :18 into the game. (even though it's only an impossible :02 seconds after the first FLA goal...)

The Penguins use the second period to storm back into the game on two goals by RW James Neal (8.0a/8.0a). The good news is we held the Pens to 7 shots on goal and we closed the shots gap to one at 19 -18.

What a third period!, 16,864 fans are treated to a three goal third period and seven goals on the night! The final score is 7 - 3 and the players are mobbing each other by G Tim Thomas... There is definitely a feeling of relief among the coaches and we savor the moment before heading to the dressing room.
C Shawn Matthias (6.5a/6.5a)and C Nick Bjugstad (7.0a/8.0a) both score twice tonight, while First Star D Brian Campbell (8.0a/8.0a) had two assists and a plus three rating for the evening.

ARZ - 4 PHI - 5 The Flyers taking 8 of 10 penalties in the game does not sound like a winning formula. Flyers C Brayden Schenn had two goals including a PP tally and a helper to get Philly it's first win of the season. Coyotes C Mike Riberio (7.5b/7.5b) also scored twice, and the Yotes had 3 PP tallies in the losing effort.
NYI - 0 CHI - 2 Backup G Nikolai Khabibulin (6.5c/6.5c) got the start and the shutout, turning away 24 shots, and D Duncan Keith (9.5b/9.5b) and C Jonathan Toews (9.5b/9.5b) provided the offense for the undefeated Blackhawks fourth win.
LAK - 2 CAR - 6 The Kings were not treated like royalty by the hometown Hurricanes. LW Alexander Semin (8.0b/8.0b) got the hat trick with an assist and D Mike Komisarek (6.5d/6.5d) had three helpers in dismantling the visitors from the west coast.
DAL - 1 WPG - 3 If there wasn't bad blood before this game - there is now! Hooking, holding, roughing and various cheap shots finally boiled over into a early third period heavyweight match between DAL Antoine Roussel and WPG Zach Bogosian who went at it for almost three minutes before refs were able to separate the two. The teams still hacked and tripped each other right to the final buzzer and glares were plentiful as the refs stayed on the ice til the teams retired to their respective locker rooms.
NJD - 2 CAL - 4 Defense was definitely an afterthought tonight at the Scotiabank Saddledome arena. NJ fired 41 shots in the contest to Calgary's 39 shots and CAL RW David Jones (6.5c/6.5c) had a goal and an assist to pace the winners. NJ fell to 2 - 3 on the season and Calgary improved to 3 - 2.

A trade virgin no "moore"

The surprising news came in a funny way. When I last logged out of FHM the news inbox was empty. When I opened the inbox today the news below appeared!

Bonehead makes the early morning call to the owner, who sleepily approves the deal. Confirmation e-mails to Craig MacTavish and the NHL offices are prepared and sent... Equipment personnel are instructed to clear up Upshall's locker and make it ready for it's new occupant. The players entrance security team is assigned the responsibility to intercept Scottie when he arrives at the arena, since he already left his house this morning. The anticipation builds in Bonehead as his coaches start coming into the "war room".

EDM - 3 TOR - 4 The Oilers used two third period goals by LW Taylor Hall (8.5d/9.5d) to force the game into overtime, but D Cody Franson (6.5b/7.5b) again provided the shootout winner to give the home team two points. ( Note the shootout format again allowed a 7th shot after Franson's goal was scored on the sixth shot.)
COL - 2 WAS - 6 Alex Ovechkin (9.5b/10.0b) had two goals including a PP tally and a three point night, while C Nicklas Backstrom (8.5d/8.5d) added three helpers to give the Capitals their first win of the season.
NYR - 3 STL - 1 Rangers LW Chris Kreider (7.0c/7.5c) had a Gordie Howe hat trick - a goal, an assist, and a fight, (actually two fights) to continue the magical road trip. G Henrik Lundqvist's early season stats are just staggering, 1.20 GAA and a .957 save percentage.
MTL - 6 VAN - 2 The Canadiens bracketed three goals into the first and third periods to overwhelm their opponents tonight. C David Desharnais (7.0d/7.5d) scored and had two assists to lead the Habs scoring.
PHI - 4 DET - 3 The visiting Flyers tied the game early in the third period and then survived OT with RW Wayne Simmonds (8.0c/8.0c) shootout score making the difference at Joe Louis Arena.
BOS - 2 CBL - 1 Bruins RW Jarome Iginla (8.0d/8.0d) had the GWG in the third period and D Zdeno Chara (9.0c/9.0c) scored another first period goal to pull past the tough Blue Jackets squad.
NYI - 4 NAS - 5 The Predators jumped out to a 4 goal lead in the first period and then struggled all game holding off the furious comeback attempt by the Islanders. Nashville's RW Patric Hornqvist (7.5b/7.5b) scored twice and C Mike Fisher (7.5c/7.5c) added three helpers in the win.
OTT - 3 SJS - 1 Newcomer D Jake Gardiner (6.5b/7.5b) scored the insurance goal in the third period leading his team past the frustrated 1 - 4 Sharks squad.
PIT - 3 TBY - 1 RW James Neal (8.0a/8.0a) has scored twice in his last two games, this time successfully leading the Pens past the Bolts.
BUF - 3 CHI - 2 The surging Sabres (5- 1) used two third period loads by LW Marcus Foligno (7.0b/8.0b) and D Jaime McBain (7.0b/7.0b) to get past the previously undefeated Blackhawks (4 -1) at Chicago's United Center Arena.
DAL - 2 MIN - 1 The visiting Stars got the GWG from C Cody Eakin (6.5b/7.5b) in the second period and G Dan Ellis (6.5a/6.5a) made the lead stand up for the teams second win.

In other NHL news;
FLA - The Panthers announced that they completed a trade with the Oilers for the services of RW Ales Hemsky (6.5a/6.5a) for RW Scottie Upshall (6.5a/6.5a). Sports radio stations in Edmonton were celebrating their "steal" of Upshall citing the "million dollar savings" and his recent play. Sunrise area sports talk was much more reserved saying both players were in the last year of their deals and it's too early to judge.
PIT - When C Evgeni Malkin (10.0b/10.0b) did not come out of the locker room for the third period, TV announcers replayed video of his big check and think he may have suffered an upper body injury as he only returned to the ice for two short shifts before the end of the period. No official announcement has been made.
CHI - The Blackhawks not only lost the game, they may have lost RW Marian Hossa (7.5d/7.5d) to an elbow injury. In the postgame interview the Chicago head coach reported that Hossa was still in the trainers room and it didn't look good for his dressing for the next game.
WIN - RW Blake Wheeler (8.0d/8.0d) left practice early and did not return. No report on the severity of any injury and no one was talking after practice either. Players leaving all uttered the same phrase "See the Head Coach" when asked about their teammate.
MIN - LW Zach Parise (8.5d/8.5d) made the surprise announcement after practice that he has a sore left wrist and may be out for a couple games. Team officials seemed surprised and scrambled to respond. The Wild finally issued a press release saying Parise may miss up to two weeks with the wrist injury.

Game 6 vs. Los Angeles Oct 13th
When both defensive coaches are again sitting in the war room as Bonehead enters, "uh-oh" is his first thought... Setting his coffee down on the conference table, he grins at the coaches and says "what's shakin with our bacon?" Coach Tyulin looks at him blankly and Bonehead groans inwardly then quickly offers "what has you guys in here so early?" Coach Tyulin brightens and replies "We have come to a decision... Robak over Gilroy" and emphatically sets his coffee cup down! Bonehead glances at Coach McCabe who winces a little and then adds his agreement to the idea. Both coaches point out that the skills of both players are nearly identical and while overall they would like a better D man, having both players play exactly the same style isn't helping the team. With that, Bonehead asks them if Gilroy should be on the trade list and Coach Tyulin wastes no time agreeing... followed by Coach McCabe.

The opening lines have been set and Coach Ramsay inserts newcomer RW Ales Hemsky on the first line with C Gomez and LW Fleischmann who are the most offensively gifted and he sticks them together to see if there is any chemistry. All four lines are starting the game at equal time (15 mins) and Robak gets his second start on D while the previous set up of the top four getting 25 mins + the bulk of special teams will stay.

Finally the opening faceoff puck is ready to be dropped and... After one period the Panthers are already down 2-0. Shots are nearly equal at 11-10 Panthers and Gomez is given a questionable diving penalty that led to a Kings PP goal. The 1st line is now 20 mins and the third line is down to 10 mins. Defense is reverted to Kulikov/Robak is now 2nd pair and Gubranson/Weaver are back to third pair and all three pairings are at 20 mins. the third pair remain on PP/PK special teams.

The second period is definitely leaning the Panthers way as RW Brad Boyes scores an ES marker and the shot advantage grows for the Panthers to 22-17. Bonehead goes crazy when RW Dan Carcillo (7.0a/7.0a) virtually chases down and runs over LW Jonathan Huberdeau (7.0a/8.0a) to welcome him to the league. Huberdeau wastes no time and drops the gloves with Carcillo, but is clearly not in the same class as the noted pugilist. 1st Line and 4th line are given 20 min shifts and the 2 & 3rd lines have 10 mins each. Defense is same for the third period.

The tightly played third period yields no goals for either team and LA skates away with the victory. Bonehead defends the play of the team in the postgame press conference. There are several questions all coming back to continued offensive troubles, when the exasperated Bonehead interrupts and points out they just scored 7 goals the last game! He further points out that the Kings are considered a top team and they held that high flying offense to just two goals. No further questions occur and Bonehead wraps up the conference.

Panthers Week 2 Oct
October 7th - 14th 2013

The weekly call to the owner goes well and even though the Panthers record is still a .500 winning percentage, he was happy with the close loss against LA and very happy with the blowout win against the Penguins. I update him on the players being offered as trade bait. and he cautions me that some of the deals should include draft choices to improve the future of the team.

As I hang up I suddenly realize I have not actually seen the owner since the press conference introducing me. Jo reported he stopped in briefly while we were on the road but did not stay long. Hmmm...

Here's the weekly stats;

In other NHL news;

Bruins interested?

A chance phone call to the Boston GM Peter Chiarelli while following up on some prospects from their deep farm system, led to trade talks and possibly a trade. Touting Daniel Paille to me and acknowledging he was the odd man out on the LW in Boston, would I be interested in him? I offered D Gilroy and he laughed, "With what else?" he replied. Scanning my roster I notice that LW Bergenheim is $2.75M and not producing and both players are defensively oriented so surprising me he told me to write it up and send it to him for his consideration.

Game 7 @ Nashville Oct 15th
Due to a late arriving flight in Nashville, the team must do a short practice then get ready for the game. Bonehead jumps into the gameplan as soon as the coaches have the players skating drills set. Defensive coaches want to remain with the top four getting the bulk of the minutes and Bonehead is agreeable. Coach Ramsay also is advising no changes for this game, but cautions everybody that Nashville is a dangerous team even though its not showing up on the scoresheet yet.

15,887 is the announced crowd at Bridgestone Arena and its loud and rocking as the opening faceoff occurs. Predators C David Legwand (7.5b/7.5b) opens the scoring from the near post on a rebound past G Tim Thomas who had no chance. Surprisingly the Panthers answer right back just 10 seconds later when RW Ales Hemsky (6.5a/6.5a) lights the lamp off the feed from Tomas Fleischmann. The first period ends with no more scoring and the Predators leading in shots 12-9.

The second period is pretty even until the Pred's young D Seth Jones (7.0b/8.5b) is called for hooking at the 9:42 mark. Hemsky tallies his second goal of the night on the PP and the Panthers have a slim 2 - 1 lead. Things get testy late in the period when the Predators captain D Shea Weber (9.0b/9.5b) gets called for a major penalty for an illegal check to the head that will be surely reviewed by the league disciplinarians. The PP is productive but also gives up a SH tally before the end of the period. The Panthers have the lead 3 - 2 and have caught up in shots and now lead by a slim margin of 20 - 19 after two periods.

Bonehead makes defensive changes in the 2nd intermission and all three blueline pairs will get equal ES ice time, over Coach Tyulin's obvious displeasure. This turns out to be a good move as the third period plays a much more physical style from the Predators. The first fight breaks out in front of the Panthers net after Pred's C Legwand takes an extra whack at a covered up puck and Colby Robak showed him why that's not a good thing to do. Less than three minutes later Nashville LW Richard Clune (6.0b/6.5b) offers to drop the gloves with Panthers D Eric Gudbranson (7.0a/7.5a) while the coaching staff is screaming for Gudbranson to skate away, Gudbranson ignores them and engages Clune for the second fight of the period. Bonehead is seething and now only has four D for the next two minutes and five D-men for the next five. Fortunately for the Panthers C Shawn Matthias (6.5a/6.5a) finds the back of the net just after the penalties expire and provides the breathing room as the game ends 64 seconds later.

Boneheads post game conference is riddled with questions about the recent acquisition scoring his first two goals in a Panthers uniform. He praises Hemsky but makes sure everyone is aware hockey is a team game and everybody pitched in to make this victory possible. Bonehead heaps praise on the 4th checking line for completely shutting down the Predators 1st line tonight.380288d1422503169-dynasty-florida-panthe380289d1422503169-dynasty-florida-panthe380290d1422503180-dynasty-florida-panthe

Game 8 vs. Boston Bruins Oct 17th
The morning skate is subdued with he sudden injury to Hemsky, so Bonehead decides to talk to the team and cut the practice short.

As the head coach Bonehead tells the team his moves to the lineup;
He's calling up LW/RW Joey Crabb (6.0/6.0) from San Antonio and was moving Versteeg to first line RW from 3rd line LW. Jesse Winchester was inserted into the 3rd line spot for his efforts this season. C Nick Bjugstad is moved to 1st line C and Scott Gomez drops to 2nd line C. RW is also flopped with Brad Boyes going to 3rd line and 3rd PK forward with Jesse Winchester as C. Billy Butler was now 2nd line RW for this trial period.

The dressing room is relaxed before the game and a lot of ribbing is going on surprising Bonehead. Coach Pauwelyn says he thinks the team chemistry is going to be fine and we should be competitive with Boston tonight. Coach Ramsay is somewhat doubtful that C Bjugstad is ready for +20 minutes ice time as first line C, but he will monitor his play and report to Bonehead. Coach Tyulin reports the pairings is as usual 25/25/10 and Kulikov/Robak are limited 3rd pair.(no PK/PP time).

The first period is played and the score is tied at 1 - 1 and the shots are equal at 10. C Nick Bjugstad (7.0a/8.0a) has the first goal of the game on the PP, pleasing everybody, and its LW Milan Lucic (8.0c/8.0c)getting the game tying goal later in the period.

The second period sees an early PP goal from RW Bobby Butler on a redirect of a Brian Campbell slapshot. Again its just past mid period when C David Krejci scores from the slot on the rebound of a LW Milan Lucic induced scrum to the side of the net. The shots are 18 - 17 Bruins and Bonehead feels the game is slipping away... So he tells Coaches Tyulin and McCabe to go 20/20/20 defense and put Kulikov/Robak on 2nd pair and on the 2nd PP.
The third period immediately proves Bonehead wrong as Kulikov stops skating and pulls down the Bruin forward deep in the Panthers zone with a hook right in front of the referee. It only takes Boston 8 seconds to ram home a Iginla power play tally to take the lead 3 - 2. Coach Tyulin stares at Bonehead but Bonehead won't acknowledge him and encourages the lines to skate hard and get open. This works as RW Brad Boyes also brings home the bacon 2 minutes later on an even strength marker. The game is slightly leaning the Panthers way but still tied at 3 when Coach Ramsay taps the checking line to go out against the Bruins top line with just over two minutes to play. D Kulikov redeems himself by stripping RW Iginla of the puck along the boards and passing to his defensive partner Robak. Robak's pass is tape measure to LW Sean Bergenheim and a 3 on 2 develops as the Panthers defensive pair skates to the bench for a change. Marcel Goc SCORES!!! 1:42 left in the game and the arena is rockin!!! The Panthers successfully kill off the clock and gladly take the win as the Bruins look shocked.

The postgame interview is short and Bonehead does some boasting of his own. "2 PP goals, a win against a playoff caliber team, and players embraced the new roles and produced, what more could the press want???" of course the questions fly about why aren't the Panthers actively going after a replacement RW???, Does Bonehead really think Versteeg had a good game tonight??? Bonehead points out Hemsky had to play two games before he got his goals for the Panthers, and Versteeg is a professional hockey player who will rise to the occasion. Bonehead says he is not ruling out looking for help, but with his current squad playing this well it's not a pressing need at the moment. The press conference breaks up after the players comments are solicited.

STL - 6 CHI - 5 The visiting Blues used RW Chris Stewart's (7.5a/7.5a) two goals and assist to run out to a 6 - 2 lead then hung on in a furious third period rally by the Blackhawks who wasted a fine two goal performance by LW Patrick Sharp (8.5b/8.5b) in the loss. A two hander across LW Brandon Bollig's (6.5b/6.5b) head by RW TJ Oshie (8.0a/8.0a) in the third period caused Oshie to get a 5 min penalty and the ire of the United Center fans. Bolling recovered and stayed in the game.
DET - 1 COL -3 Three first period goals including two ES goals by Matt Duchene (8.0d/8.5d) was more than the visiting Red Wings could handle. Av's G Semyon Varlamov (8.0c/8.0c) faced only 22 shots and got his league leading sixth win of the season.

STL - also injured in the game in Chicago tonight LW Brendan Morrow (7.5b/7.5b) was holding his right glove against his body after an uncalled slash by Chicago late in the second period. Morrow is expected to return to St. Louis for x-rays and his timetable for return is uncertain.
PIT - A surprise trade has caught everyone flatfooted, D Brooks Orpik (7.0c/7.0c) a stalwart longtime Penguin blueliner is going to the Chicago Blackhawks for a seventh round pick in this years upcoming draft.
