Mariners/Reds trade...

Recommended Posts

Seattle sends:

  • P Brad Brach
  • LF Jack Cochrane (AAA)

Cincinnati sends:

  • P Daniel Wolford (salary 100% retained by Cincinnati)

Seattle is looking for extra bullpen options for the 2022 season and Daniel Wolford fits that bill. In exchange, we give up Brad Brach and Jack Cochrane, who performed very well in the spring in Peoria, but is just blocked in our org. Looking forward to seeing Cochrane launch some rockets at Great American Ballpark. Thanks to Jason for the quick and easy deal!

Reds confirm.

We like Wolford's ratings, but he had a horrible year last year, is 33, and was borderline for making the team. We have a lot of talented pitchers coming up, and by the time we're competing he'll be in his mid-30s and expensive. We wish him well in Seattle, where he'll likely win a Cy Young or something.

Brach will likely give up a homer or two per game, but if he does we can just cut him. We've got budget room, and unlike certain other salary dumps recently, Brach is only a one-year deal.
Cochrane is obviously the main prize. Our outfield is pretty stacked (in theory), but despite inviting about 40 first basemen to spring training, none of the ones that were MLB-ready were actually any good. So having a guy like Cochrane, who has excellent 1B defence and has versatility to move to LF as a genuine fielder and not someone hiding out there, could be very useful. We also think his bat is a great fit for GAB. I can't wait to tell Jose Ramirez the good news. Cochrane will start the year in AAA though.
