[XEG Football] - Welcome to the Table Top Football League (TTFL)

Recommended Posts

Utilizing the very creative team creation tool located within XEG Football (which uses season stats to populate positional attributes), I converted a 10 team league I created with the Flash Football table top game into the TTFL utilizing the XEG Football engine for game play.  The game is free and located at https://xegstudios.com/.  Though XEG Football does not have the capability for season play yet, the game does have a very nice feature where you input the prior season stats for the teams and the game automatically ages the players, improving some or declining others based on their stats and years experience.  Utilizing Excel and the exportable CSV files the game generates, you can easily track weekly, seasonal, career stats, while letting the game engine play out the game (and the game designer provides very copious notes showing you what is underneath the hood for the engine and how the play results are determined).  Simply put, this game is tailor made for those looking to replay old NFL, College, USFL, etc seasons.  Build your rosters, input your team player stats and away you go.

My league has 10 Teams:

Eastern Division - Madison (WI) Pandas, Newark (DE) Bees, Norfolk (VA) Swans, Orlando (FL) Warthogs, Rochester (NY) Cockatiels

Western Division - Albuquerque (NM) Gazelles, Aurora (CO) Coyotes, Eugene (OR) Frogs, San Jose (CA) Mandrills, Wichita (KS) Cheetahs

The league plays a 9 game schedule and the top 2 teams from each division make the playoffs.  I have currently completed Week one of schedule with the following results

Newark Bees 27	@	34	Aurora Coyotes
Albuquerque Gazelles 17	@	21	Rochester Cockatiels
Orlando Warthogs 35	@	28	Eugene Frogs
Norfolk Swans 9	@	48	Wichita Cheetahs
San Jose Mandrills 45	@	49	Madison Pandas

The next few posts will give a broad overview of the teams.

EASTERN DIVISION

MADSION PANDAS - Led by dynamic 2nd year QB Abdur Greer (last game: 22/26 450yds 6 td 0 int; 6 car 14yds 1 td), the Madison offense is very explosive.  Their tandem WR corps of Raiden McClellan (8/168 3td) and Stanley Ewing (6/125 2td) will give defensive backfield nightmares.  Their run game is used to supplement their strong passing game.  Defensively, Madison is not very strong, so must lean on the offensive to outscore teams. Their secondary will get picked on, so it is up to their stout front 4 to bring pressure on the passing game to help protect these cornerbacks and safeties.

NORFOLK SWANS - Offensively, they stress the short passing game behind 2nd year QB Tony Harvey (last game: 23/30 171yds 0 td 0int) while also utilizing a committee of half backs of HB Artur Fitzpatrick (5/38 1 td), HB Akeem Moore (12/37 0 td) and HB Shane Lancaster (5/15 0 td).  The lack of explosiveness on offense will be an issue all year long as their best receiver is actually TE Ronaldo Hills (6/49 0td).  This is team that will struggle to stop teams running the ball (gave up 219 rushing yards and 4.6 yards a carry last game) as their front 7 are fairly pedestrian.  Last game, they lost their best defensive backfield player, CB Adeeb Croft, to a season ending Achilles tendon injury (yes, the game has injuries).

ORLANDO WARTHOGS - Featuring an offense based on spread concepts, this teams airs the ball out with dual threat 2nd year QB Terrell Kingston (last game: 41/50 370yds 4 td 0 int; 7 car 21yds).  Running the ball is an afterthought to this team.  Defensively, their front 4 is the strength of the team and boy, do they get after the quarterback (33% QB pressure rate).  They will need that pressure weekly as their secondary is not strong and can be exploited.

ROCHESTER COCKATIELS - The 'Rock Cocks' as I lovingly call them, are led by veteran 8 year QB Tahmid Zavala who brings a potent passing game to the table (34/44 361yds 3 td 0 int).  The offense really has no featured receivers as last game, all 8 wide receivers and tight ends caught a pass.  Defensively, Rochester is very balanced at all three levels of the defense and has no real weakness.  This team will be tough all year and a favorite of mine to make noise in the post season

NEWARK BEES - One of the more balanced offenses in the TTFL, 2nd year QB Kayden Nicholls has gunslingers tendencies that will turn the ball over at times (24/33 314yds 2 td 2int).  To help balance him out, Newark has a nice running game led by HB Rayhan Ventura (10/98yds 1 td).  On defense, DE Tai Bostock is their best player who gets after the quarterback (5 QB hurries).  This team will have issues stopping the pass though as their secondary is a bit on the weak side.

I predict Madison and Rochester will be playing for the division title in the playoffs.

WESTERN DIVISION

AURORA COYOTES - Probably having the most balanced offense in the TTFL, Aurora is led by 3rd year QB Roscoe Draper (29/36 288yds 2 td 1 int; 9 car 18yds) and 7th year HB Magnus Lowe (21 car 104yds).  WR Antonio Cobb (10/130 1td) is their best receiver and will catch most of the passes on offense.  Defensively, OLB Ianis Gay is a sideline to sideline stud (6 tckls, 1 sack, 1 int) and NT Omer Boyle provides plenty of push and pass rush up the middle (3 tackles, 2 sacks).

ALBUQUERQUE GAZELLES - One of the few teams to actually focus on running the ball, their passing game is play action based with 5th year QB Remi Jeffery (16/24 211yds 1 td) seeking to feed the ball to their all world TE Corrie Field (10/159yds 1 td).  HB Nazim Armitage (20/72yds 1 td) and HB Keenan Williamson (13/34yds)  for a strong duo that can wear defenses down and run play clocks all game long.  Defensively, they blitz all game long, which leads to big defensive stops as well as big offensive gains.  I love their aggressiveness.

EUGENE FROGS - Highlighting a very strong passing game led by 3rd year QB Franco Drummond (36/49 392yds 3 td 1 int; 5 car 22yds), Eugene's strength is really their trio of pass catchers WR Donald Bell (7/93yds 1 td), WR Laith Travis (10/150yds 1 td) and TE Timur Hardy (8/64yds).  Defenses will have to pick their poison with this pass offense.  On Defense, they are led by DE Subhan Cook who is a monster off the edge (2 tckls, 1 sack, 7 QB hurries; 2 tckls for loss) and their Nickel back, CB Emory Bain, is the best Nickel back in the league.

WICHITA CHEETAHS - This team is the class of the TTFL, featuring a ground and pound running game led by HB Atticus Nichols (24/144yds 2td) and supplemented by the great play of 3rd year QB Wyatt Odom (15/18 231yds 4 td 0 int; 5car 15yds).  WR Keyan Fowler (4/159yds) is their big play receiver and is a blur running down the field.  Wichita's offensively line is the best in the game and are adept at protecting in the passing game and plowing holes in the running game. Defensively, Wichita have good players at all 3 levels with very good blitzing linebackers.  This team is my favorite to win in all.

SAN JOSE MANDRILLS - Another well balanced offense led by 7th year QB Youseff Gaines (28/36 358yds 2 td 0 int), their passing offense has an awesome trio of receivers (WR Naseem O'Brien (5/115yds 1 td), WR Ibrar Paul (6/85yds and TE Giorgio Davidson (10/118yds 1 td)) as well as a great running game led by HB Eugene Pritchard (21/117yds 3 td).  On defense, San Jose is very well rounded  with no real holes though they could stand to have their front 4 provide more pressure on the QB (only has 3 pressures all game long).

I think Wichita and San Jose will meet in the playoffs.

Rochester practically begged Newark to win this game.  Rochester missed 3 FGs, had 1 FG blocked as well.  Late in the 4th quarter, Rochester executed a PERFECT goalline stand from the half yard line, denying Newark the TD 4 times.  Newark did not help their cause there as they passed 4 times in a row trying to score the game winning touchdown.  But as luck would have it, Rochester took over at their own 1 yard line and immediately gave up a safety!  Thankfully, Rochester's defense held Newark in check for one more drive to secure the win.

From the looks of it, Eugene QB Franco Drummond played lights out, but a subpar first half (9/18 70yd 0 td 0int) allowed Aurora to take a 17-6 lead at halftime.  The 2nd half was pretty much a shootout, minus a late 100yd kickoff return TD by Aurora KR Adam Ramos, but had the Eugene passer converted some of those 1st half misses into 1st downs, this game could have been a lot closer.  As for Aurora, QB Roscoe Draper showed what kind of damage he can do with his legs and his arm and despite a couple of interceptions, he was great.  The two defenses struggled this game, but a couple of standouts were:

  • Eugene LB Zayden Eastwood had 2 interceptions
  • Eugene DE Subhan Cook continued his dominance with a sack and 4 QB pressures
  • The Aurora Pass rush harassed the Eugene quarterback mercilessly with 21 QB pressures/sacks for a 41% pressure rate, which is amazing

This game was a tale of two halves for the Albuquerque Gazelles.  They were actually up 14-3 on the strong Wichita team until a very late 2nd quarter touchdown by Wichita brought the score to 14-10 going into halftime.  The 3rd quarter proved decisive for Wichita.  The first play from scrimmage after halftime, from their 9 yard line, Wichita QB Wyatt Odom hit WR Bogdan Livingston on a hitch route. The defender fell down and Livingston scampered 90 yards down to the Albuquerque 1 yard line.  A quick punch in by QB Wyatt Odom and just like that, Wichita takes the lead.

After (2) Albuquerque field goals and a 57 yard TD run by fleet-footed HB Atticus Nichols, we head into the 4th quarter with Albuquerque down 24-20.  Midway through the 4thquarter and down 27-20, Albuquerque QB Remi Jeffery threw a back breaking interception to Wichita FS Martin Reese, giving Wichita the ball at the Albuquerque 35 yard line.  Seven plays later, QB Wyatt Odom threw a 7 yard TD pass to WR Bogdan Livingston sealing the win.

Again, Wichita is the cream of the TTFL and proved it in decisive fashion.

Some defensive standouts for the game were:

  • Wichita NT Jaidan Field was a force on the inside of the defensive line with 8 tackles (2 for losses) and a sack
  • Albuquerque NT Damian Tang was equally impressive notching 6 tackles (3 for losses)
  • Albuquerque's defensive front 4 brought steady pressure while combining for 3 sacks

The Madison Pandas were rolling along offensively behind their MVP caliber QB Abdur Greer, who threw for 2 TDs and ran for 1, leading to Madison to a 28-14 halftime lead.....the disaster struck.  Early in the 3rd quarter, TE Coen Cuevas played the part of a turnstile pass blocking against Orlando DE Moses Lucero; who then nailed QB Abdur Greer, knocking him out of the game (luckily he should be back next week).  The game went downhill from there as the Madison offense only scored 10 more points the remainder of the game.  There is no doubt in my mind that had Greer not been injured, this game would have turned out differently.

Orlando QB Kingston Terrell was amazing, consistently keeping the Madison defense off balanced between his accurate passes and his scrambling ability.  He destroyed the Madison secondary!  Late in the 4th quarter with 1:15 left on the clock and down 38-34, Orlando QB Kingston Terrell found a streaking WR Glen House behind the defense for a 68yd bomb and a score and that sealed the game.  Amazing comeback by the Orlando Warthogs!

Defensive Standouts were:

  • Madison CB Milton Bender had a great day with 6 tckls, sack, interception and 3 pass breakups
  • Orlando DE Moses Lucero not only put a quarterback out of the game, he also had 5 tckls, sack and 2 tackle for loss

Despite the other-worldly performance of Norfolk QB Tony Harvey, Norfolk defense's shoddy play and untimely penalties hampered Norfolk's ability to win this game.  This really was a quarterback duel.  Each quarterback was unstoppable.  Practically every throw was on target and the defenses were helpless for the most part.  Norfolk scored a late touchdown with 1:00 to go in the game, but they failed to recover the subsequent onside kick.  Even though San Jose QB Yousef Gaines was amazing, 4 rushing touchdowns proved to be decisive.

Some defensive standouts were:

  • Norfolk NT Iolo Jordan was a beast in the middle of the defense with 3 tackles for lost
  • Norfolk's defensive line combined for 7 total tackles for loss, shutting down

  • If you look above at the 3rd down conversions and the penalties, you can understand why Eugene blew Newark out the water all game
  • The Eugene 3-headed monster of QB Franco Drummond, HB Simeon Conway and WR Donald Bell were dominant
  • Eugene LT Luke Horton was awful with 3 penalties, 5 QB hurries allowed and a sack allowed
  • Eugene DE Subhan Cook showed why he is the premier pass rusher in the TTFL with a sack and 9 QB hurries
  • Eugene DT Charles Shaples had 2 sacks and is probably the best interior pass rusher in the TTFL
  • Newark ED Rahul Webster was also dominant and was constantly in the offensive backfield with 7 QB Hurries
  • Newark CB Rafferty McGregor had an interception and a pass break up

INTERESTING NUGGETS

  • Late in the 4th quarter and down 20-16 (look at the missed extra point above), Aurora gets the ball on their own 6 yard line and executes a beautiful 15 play 90 yard drive down to the Madison 4 yard line.  On 4th and 1, Aurora QB Roscoe Draper is flushed from the pocket and sees WR Cruz O'Connell open.  He fires the ball, it hits O'Connell in the chest.....and HE DROPS IT! Ball game.
  • Madison QB Abdur Green was not his normal self and I attribute that to lingering effects of the injury he sustained last week. Hopefully he heals quickly, because his team can not succeed if he isn't playing well
  • Madison's defense got torched by the Aurora passing game and missed 11(!) tackles in the running game
  • Madison LB Wilfred O'Quinn had 2 sacks and was all over the field making plays
  • Madison SS Lincoln Thatcher had and interception

  • Down 16-0 at halftime, Albuquerque could have easily folded up and laid down....but they didn't.  The put on a defensive onslaught with consistent pressure on the San Jose quarterback that absolutely shut San Jose down offensively
  • Late in the 4th quarter, Albuquerque drove down to the San Jose 40 yard line with the hope of kicking the game winning field goal.  San Jose's defense held firm and shut down the drive to preserve the win
  • In the first half, San Jose TE Giorgio Davidson was unstoppable catching 11 passes.  San Jose shut him down in the second half and he did not catch another ball
  • San Jose FS Sayed Byrne and SS Abdullah Hale each had interceptions
  • Albuquerque's defense racked up 3 sacks and provided pressure on 16 out of 38 dropbacks in the passing game (42% pressure rate)

INTERESTING NUGGETS

  • Down 28-27 in the 4th quarter, Wichita was driving until a fumble by reserve HB Maddison McMahon gave Newark all of the momentum they needed to seize the game, win their 1st game of the year and give the undefeated Wichita team their first lose of the year
  • Wichita QB Wyatt Odom was injured during a critical stretch of the second quarter, with the back up getting sacked on a big 3rd down play as well as throwing a bad interception in that quarter; luckily he was able to shake off the injury and play well
  • Wichita HB Atticus Nichols was the only thing that kept Wichita in the game during that bad stretch of play in the 1st and 2nd quarters
  • Neither team's defense really showed up as combines, there was almost 1,000 yards of total offense between the two teams
  • Newark QB Kayden Nicholls has struggled this season, but he broke out big time in the game with a historic performance (6 TDs is the league record for passing TDs in one game
  • Wichita CB Reuben Ramos was the sole player in the secondary to play well for Wichita as he only allowed 1 first down catch on 9 targets; he shut down everything else in front of him
  • Newark CB Rafferty McGregor had a sack and an interception

INTERESTING NUGGETS

  • This game was bananas!
  • Behind the heroic efforts of backup Madison QB Olivier Goines, who came in the game for an injured QB Abdur Greer, brought back Madison from a 41-24 deficit in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime
  • With 999 yards of total offense between the teams, you can tell very little defense was played in this game.  It truly came down to who had the ball last in overtime
  • Madison QB Abdur Greer has a fractured collarbone and will miss the next month
  • Madison Offensive line gave up 20 pressures and 4 sacks; Eugene DE Subhan Cook had 9 of those pressures
  • Eugene QB Franco Drummond was simply unstoppable

  • Unfortunately, the 59 yard FG attempt was short and Norfolk won their 1st game of the year
  • Norfolk LB Shakeel Spencer had a 30 yard interception return for a touchdown
  • Norfolk starting HB Artur Fitzpatrick strained his hamstring and will miss the next 2 games
  • Norfolk backup DL Francis Huffman dislocated his shoulder and tore some ligaments and will be out for the rest of the year

INTERESTING NUGGETS

  • Two ill-fated plays cost Orlando this game sending to their 1st lost of the season while giving Albuquerque their 1st win of the year; the first was a failed 4th and 1 call that was blown up on the Albuquerque 42 yardline and the second was a red zone interception in the end zone
  • Orlando's inability to run the ball puts too much pressure on QB Kingston Terrell to be perfect and when he isn't, the team struggles
  • Albuquerque's defense had 5 tackles for loss and NT Damien Tang was especially a beast in shutting down Orlando's run game with 4 run stops and a tackle for loss
  • Albuquerque SS Hanan Barnett had the interception in the end zone
