USFL 2K | FBPro98

Recommended Posts

It has been quite a while since I updated this thread, so let me bring you up to date:

- I am now using XEG Football to simulate the 2006 2KFL season which will be the 7th season I have simulated (2004 was finished in FBPro98; the 2005 season was actually simmed in Draft Day Sport 2021)

- Before the 2005 season, the 2KFL expanded to 18 teams (Memphis Showboats, Pittsburgh Maulers, Houston Gamblers, San Antonio Gunslingers, Oklahoma Outlaws and Jacksonville Bulls).  The Pittsburgh Maulers were the lucky team to win the number one pick and selected QB Aaron Rodgers.  Some other notable rookies chosen in the 2005 draft were QB Ryan Fitzpatrick  going to the Houston Gamblers, QB Alex Smith going to the San Antonio Gunslingers and DE DeMarcus Ware going to the Boston Breakers and CB Pacman Jones going to the Washington Federals who seem to love stacking their secondary with front-line elite prospects in the draft.

- The Washington Federals ended up winning the 2004 2KFL Bowl defeating the Chicago Blitz.  The 2004 League MVP was Tampa Bay QB Marc Bulger.  The Defensive Player of the Year was Philadelphia Stars CB Damon Moore.  The Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year were Birmingham Stallions WR Wes Welker and Washington Federals S Sean Taylor.

- The Los Angeles Express defeated Tom Brady (who also won 2005 League MVP award) and the Philadelphia Stars to win the 2005 2KFL Bowl.  The Defensive Player of the Year was Michigan Panthers S Earl Little.  The Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year were Oklahoma Outlaws HB Ronnie Brown and Washington Federals CB Chris Harris.

As an aside, I will be providing weekly update recapping each game with interesting things that happened during the game

The 2006 2KFL Draft took place a couple of weeks and the results are below:

The first Conference we will highlight is the Eastern Conference:

ATLANTIC DIVISION

Philadelphia Stars - After the surprising retirement of QB Tom Brady (passed for 4388 yards and 43 TDs last season), who retired in the locker room after losing the 2005 2KFL Bowl declaring he has a supermodel wife at home and he doesn't need the heartbreak of losing his one shot at glory, the Stars will turn to 12 year veteran free agent pickup QB Akili Smith (formerly the long time starter of the Oakland Invaders who threw for 3394 yards and 27 TDs last season) to helm the quarterback position.  The Stars totally revamped their wide receiver corps in 2005, drafting WR Lance Moore, WR Cedric Wilson and  WR Bryant Johnson.

Washington Federals - They are getting a bit long in the tooth on offense with mainstays 8th year QB Matt Hasselbeck, 10th year and future 1st ballot Hall of Famer HB Edgerrin James and 8th year WR Peter Warrick.  The strength of this team is their secondary with CB Pacman Jones CB Chris Harris, S Sean Taylor and rookie S Reed Doughty.  Washington was sitting pretty last season at 7-2 when they lost their starting quarterback and his backup for the season in consecutive plays, leading to a 5 game losing streak behind 3rd string QB J.P. Losman, who was awful.  Finishing the season with a .500 record has been their worse season since this league started.

Boston Breakers - 8th year QB Daunte Culpepper still leads the offense with stud 5th year HB LaDainian Tomlinson (who was 2nd in the league in rushing yards last season with 1284 yards)  effectively running the ball last season.  Their team strength are their all-world defensive ends DeMarcus Ware  and Cameron Wake.  10th year LB Chris Claiborne still captains the defense and is still very effective in the middle of the defense.  They finished a disappointing 5-9 last season and hope their fortunes change with a new offensive philosophy.

New Jersey Generals - After the retirement of long-time starting QB Brian Griese after the 2005 season, the Generals turn to 2nd year player QB Charlie Frye to be their new starting QB.  He is a pretty mobile quarterback and New Jersey will be looking to take advantage of that mobility.  Their wide receiver group is strong (7th year WR D'Wayne Bates, 3rd year WR Lee Evans and rookie WR Greg Jennings) and lead running back HB Frank Gore had a strong rookie year in 2005 (906 yards rushing and 9 rushing TDs).  Defensively, they are a tad mediocre, but are still led by 8th year DE Patrick Kearney and 3rd year S Bob Sanders.

Pittsburgh Maulers - In their first season as a franchise last year, the Maulers finished with a surprising 7-7 record led by then rookie QB Aaron Rodgers (3447 yards passing and 30 TDs) who was complimented by a 1-2 running back punch of 8th year HB Olandis Gary (873 yards and 4.8 yards per carry) and HB Michael Bennett (499 yds and 4.8 ypc).  This season, the Maulers sign WR Santana Moss away from the Philadelphia Stars to lead their young wide receiver group and give Rodgers a steady hand to lean on.  Defensively, the Maulers also sign free agent and  last year's Defensive Player of the Year S Earl Little away from the Michigan Panthers, which is a huge signing.  They hope his presence will help their young defense gel.

Staying in the Eastern Conference, we now highlight the :

SOUTH DIVISION

Jacksonville Bulls - In their franchises first season, the Bulls actually won the division with an 8-6 record behind the dynamic play by the then rookie duo of QB Kyle Orton (4228 yards passing and 28 TDs) and WR Troy Williamson (1558 yard receiving and 9TDs).  Their entire team is very young, so with more seasoning, they expect to build on last year's successes.  They didn't sign a lot of veterans in free agency, so the front office is confident that their approach is sound moving forward.

Memphis Showboats - During their inaugural season last year, the Showboats  battled Jacksonville all season for the division, but finished in 2nd place also with an 8-6 record.  Their team featured a heavy ground based offense, led by the leading rusher in the 2KFL last season HB Dominic Rhodes (ran for 1653 yards and 10 rushing TDs).  He was truly unstoppable last season and the only reason why the Showboats didn't win the division last season was their uninspired passing game, lead by QB Brock Berlin ( 2586 yards passing and 15 TDs).  This season, the Showboats with be led by rookie QB Tavaris Jackson who features was more mobility and arm strength.  The play action game should improve greatly this season. On defense, the Showboats are very young, but 4th year LB Larry Foote hopes to lead these guys and help them grow.

Birmingham Stallions - Long time Stallions QB Peyton Manning retired last season, so the team drafted and will start rookie QB Matt Leinhart to man that position.  To help him, Birmingham sign some veterans on the offensive line (G David Loverne being the best of them) which seems to be the strength of the offense.  Rookie HB Leon Washington should benefit from this big offensive line flowing holes for him to run through.  Birmingham's defense, led by S Ed Reed and LB London Fletcher, added 2 rookie studs (DE Mario Williams and run-stuffing DT Kyle Williams) which may give the Stallions the top defense in the division.

Tampa Bay Bandits - The perennial contenders took a big step back last season finishing last in the South division with a 6-8 record.  6th year QB Marc Bulger is back, but the Bandits lost future Hall of Famers WR Randy Moss (left in free agency) and HB Fred Taylor (retirement), so their offensive identity will be reshaped this season which could lead to more struggles this year.  Though the defense is led by all-world CB Jeremetrius Butler (4 interceptions last season), they are very young on the backend, so expect the struggles to continue.  They did sign DE Mike Rucker away from the Washington Federals, so this should add some juice to their pass rush and help that secondary.

We now head over to the Western Conference and start with the:

MIDWEST DIVISION

Michigan Panthers - The Panthers have been one of the most consistent teams from year to year and last year was no different finishing 9-5 behind a great year from a dynamic three headed monster consisting of QB Michael Vick (3482 yards and 33 TDs), HB Shaun Alexander (942 yards and 16 TDs) and the best wide receiver taken in the 2005 draft WR Roddy White (1350 yards and 15 TDs).  QB Michael Vick has been implicated in some serious legal issues (evidently concerning some dogs), so luckily, Michigan was able to select QB Vince Young in the 2006 draft to be their starting quarterback. Defensively, Michigan is still led by 7 year DE Jevon Kearse and 6th year DT Booger McFarland.  The last couple of years, Michigan has drafted some really good linebackers such as LB Jonathan VilmaLB Channing Crowder, and LB Shawn Merriman, so this will be a strength of the defense.

San Antonio Gunslingers - Another surprising upstart team that finished 8-6 last season behind the stellar play of then rookie QB Alex Smith (2807 yards and 21 TDs), then rookie HB Darren Sproles (1161 yards and 9 TDs) and 3 year WR Reggie Wayne (1010 yards and 12 TDs).  This year, the team hopes to build on that success while also solidifying their offensive line with the addition of rookie T Jerome Clary.  On defense, San Antonio will start (3) rookie linebackers in their 3-4 defense (LB A.J. Hawk LB Jamar Williams and  LB Anthony Schlegel) so there may be a learning curve to start the season, but I expect this defense to be very tough.

Oklahoma Outlaws - Another brand new team that had a great year, finishing 8-6, the Outlaws picked up 3rd year QB Drew Brees in the expansion draft and he played amazingly last season (4252 yards and 39 TDs).  Sadly, Brees decided to retire as he did not want to be in football any longer and decided to get into broadcasting instead.  QB Matt Cassel, who was the backup last season, will start this year and he will lean heavily on 2005 Rookie of the Year HB Ronnie Brown (1266 yards and 15 TDs) and free agent pick ups 8th year (and future Hall of Famer) WR Randy Moss and 12th year WR Hines Ward.  Pro Bowl TE Emanuel Donlon (840 yards, 9 TDs and 19.1 yards per catch) will also do his part to ease the new QB into his position.  On defense, the Outlaws are extremely you as none of their starters have more than 4 years experience, but they played very well last season and there is no reason why they shouldn't this year.

Chicago Blitz - Chicago finished last season with an 8-6 record as well, being led by QB Eli Manning (3762 yards and 33 TDs), HB Robert Edwards (986 yards and 6 TDs) and WR Donald Driver (1244 yards and 14 TDs).  QB Eli Manning got hurt in a freak surfing accident over the offseason and will be out for the beginning of the year, so 6th year QB Joe Hamilton will step in for him.  The Blitz defense is lead by DT Tommie Harris and DE Jovan Haye, and let me tell you, those two are menaces in the trenches.  The Blitz will be starting (2) rookie cornerbacks this season (CB Tim Jennings and CB Jarrad Page), so there will be some bumps in the road early in the season.

Houston Gamblers - Their first year in the league did not go as well as other teams (the finished 6-8), but they have some promising players on offense such as QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (3000 yards and 17 TDs), HB Travis Henry (636 yards and 5 TDs), and WR Chris Henry (925 yards and 5 TDs).  This team has a very young defense as have most of the expansion teams, but they are hoping  DE Jaren Allen becomes a player for them on the edge.

And lastly, we focus on the final division in the Western Conference as well as the weakest division in the 2KFL:

PACIFIC DIVISION

Los Angeles Express - The defending 2KFL Bowl champions return mostly everyone, with the exception of rookie QB Brad Smith who will start over 2005 2KFL Bowl MVP QB Charlie Batch (3679 yards and 31 TDs).  This move is very controversial and will be scrutinized all season long, but the coach felt the rookie's skillset better matches the offensive philosophy as of now.  I always thought if it aint broke, dont fix it, but I could be wrong.  The rookie QB will still have plenty of firepower at his disposal as HB Clinton Portis (973 yards and 5 TDs) and the best offensive line in the game, led by C Olin Kreutz and G Benji Olson.  Defensively, the Express are strong and have added DE Rob Ninkovich, CB Jonathan Joseph and S Donte Whitner to the mix which should continue their excellence.

Oakland Invaders - The Invaders struggled last season (5-9) and it might not get much better this season despite drafting QB Jay Cutler, who should be a beast from the very start. His weapons will need to be upgraded in subsequent drafts, but having the QB in place solves a lot of problems.  On defense, DE Robert Mathis is their best player, but again, the talent is just not there to compete with Los Angeles.

Denver Gold - Their front office really just rearranged the chairs on the Titanic-like team.  Their long time starter QB Shaun King (who only started 7 games last season due to an injury) is back and besides bringing in new offensive linemen, nothing real of note was changed, much to the chagrin of the Gold fanbase especially since they passed on can't miss QB prospect QB Jay Cutler in the draft.  The fanbase sure loved that move (heh) and will be be doubly excited to see Cutler play their team in the division for years to come (double heh).  The hope is a full season of King along with an upgraded offensive line will be enough to improve the offense this year.  Their defense is very experienced, but a potential superstar may emerge this season in 2nd year DT Jay Ratliff, who was unblockable during training camp.  We will see how he plays.

Arizona Wranglers - The Wranglers were awful last season (2-12) and made the strange decision to stick with 11 year QB Ryan Leaf and choosing rookie WR Brandon Marshall over rookie QB Jay Cutler.  Though Leaf is a passable QB (he started 6 games last season due to injury) ad Marshall will be a great receiver, it is curious to have the top pick in the draft and pass on a can't miss QB prospect.  This move will be debated for years to come since Cutler is in the Wranglers' division.  It will be interesting to see how badly Cutler slices the Wranglers up throughput the years.  On defense, their core is strong (DT Kris Jenkins, DE Terrell Suggs and LB Bart Scott), but will need to play better if the offense does not improve.

JAX	27	@	10	BIR
OAK	26	@	19	DEN
LAX	29	@	14	ARI

As you can see, the road teams pretty much dominated the home teams this week.  Here are a few game-by-game nuggets

New Jersey 17  Philadelphia 16 : The Player of the Game was NYJ WR Greg Jennings (8 catches 87 yards 2 TD). Philadelphia K Shayne Graham missed a 53 yard field goal with less than 2:00 left in the game.

Washington 19  Pittsburgh 13 The Player of the Game was PIT WR Santana Moss (8 catches 126 yards).  Pittsburgh scored a late touchdown but was unable to execute a successful onside kick.

Michigan 34  San Antonio 13 : The Player of the Game was MIC HB Shaun Alexander (16 carries 99 yards 1 TD).  In his 2KFL debut, MIC QB Vince Young played well (16/24 208 yards 1 TD).

Chicago 27  Oklahoma 7 : The Player of the Game was CHI QB Joe Hamilton (13/21 228 yards 2 TD).  Penalties killed any offensive continuity Oklahoma had (9/92 yds) .  Chicago's ground game (158 total yards ) was the difference in the game.

Boston 30  Houston 17 : The Player of the Game was BOS S Tyrone Culver (2 INT, 1 TD).  Boston WR Marques Colston (7 catches 102 yards) and WR Travis Taylor (4 catches 94 yards 1 TD) punished the Houston secondary all game long.

Memphis 32  Tampa Bay 7 : The Player of the Game was MEM DE Ray Edwards (3 sacks).  The Memphis pass rush harassed TB QB Marc Bulger all game long, sacking him (9) times.  In his 2KFL debut, MEM QB Tavaris Jackson was efficient (17/27 205 yards 1 TD) and used a strong running attack that held the ball for nearly 35:00 time of possession.

Jacksonville 27  Birmingham 10 - The Player of the Game was JAX QB Kyle Orton (22/29 265 yards 2 TD 2 INT; 15 carries 97 yards 2 TD).  With the exception of 2 interceptions, Orton was dominant while leading an amazing running attack (214 total yards).

Oakland 26  Denver 19 - The Player of the Game was OAK QB Jay Cutler (20/25 308 yards 2 TD).  The rookie debut of  Cutler says it all as he begins his revenge tour of all the teams in the Pacific Division that passed on him.  On defense OAK, DE Justin Smith and S Lance Schulters each had (2) sacks.

Los Angeles 29  Arizona 14 - The Player of the Game was LAX QB Brad Smith (20/29 240 yards 2 TD). The his 2KFL debut,  Smith was stellar and was support by the bruising running of LAX HB Clinton Portis (18 carries 78 yards 1 TD) and the big play ability of LAX WR Mark Clayton (7 catches 105 yards 2 TD).  The top pick in the 2006 2KFL draft, ARI WR Brandon Marshall was magnificent (7 catches 131 yards 1 TD) in his debut as well.

Boston Breakers 37 New Jersey Generals 9 - Player of the Game was Boston HB LaDainian Tomlinson (17 carries 152 yards 2 TD). Michigan Panthers 37 Houston Gamblers 3 - Player of the Game was Michigan HB Shaun Alexander (30 carries 161 yards 1 TD; 1 catch 21 yards).  The Michigan's strong running game (216 total yards) and Michigan QB Vince Young deadly play action game (13/16 223 yards 1 TD) proved to be too much for the struggling Houston Gamblers.  Michigan DT Boogar McFarland (4 tackles 1 sack 2 TFL) was a menace all game long.

San Antonio Gunslingers 24 Chicago Blitz 16 - Player of the Game was San Antonio HB LenDale White (24 carries 113 yards).  San Antonio's running game was strong leading to a 37 to 23 minute time of posession advantage.

Los Angeles Express 34 Oakland Invaders 16 - Player of the Game was Los Angeles WR Mark Clayton (7 catches 84 yards 2 TD).  Los Angeles continues their strong start to the season, dominating Oakland while harrasing Oakland QB Jay Cutler (25/47 359 yards 2 TD 3 INT) for 6 sacks and numerous QB hurries.

Arizona Wranglers 29 Denver Gold 19 - Player of the Game was Arizona QB Ryan Leaf (19/30 292 yards 3 TD 1 INT).  Denver was actually leading this game 19-15 going into the 4th quarter, but two Arizona 4th quarter TDs proved too much for the struggling Denver Gold.  Arizona DE Terrell Suggs had 2 sacks and numerous pressures during the game.

2006 Week 4

Washington Federals 24  Philadelphia Stars 14 - Player of the Game was Washington HB Edgerrin James (35 carries 159 yards 1 TD).  Midway through the 4th quarter, Philadelphia S Adrian Wilson blocked a punt which was scooped up by Philadelphia LB Ian Gold for a 35 yard TD return, closing the score to 17-14 in favor of Washington.  The score would get no closer and Washongton HB Amos Zereoue scored a late TD to seal the win.  Washington's Pass defense held Philadelphia QB Akili Smith to 9/27 65 yards 2 Int.

Boston Breakers 44  Pittsburgh Maulers 19 - Players of the Game was Boston QB Daunte Culpepper (21/29 256 yards 2 TD) and Boston HB LaDainian Tomlinson (20 carries 124 yards 2 TD).  Boston continues their dominant start to the season by destroying the hapless Pittsburgh squad.  For Pittsburgh, QB Aaron Rodgers (25/41 265 yards 1 TD 1 Int) was decent, but it was no where near enough.

Michigan Panthers 22  Chicago Blitz 16 - Player of the Game was Michigan HB Shaun Alexander (28 carries 169 yards 2 TD).  Chicago was actually leading 16-14 very late in the 4th quarter until Michigan QB Vince Young completed 7 of 8 passes in their final drive, marching the Panthers down the field capped off by a 4 yards TD plunge by HB Shaun Alexander, stealing a win and staying undefeated.  Michigan DE Jevon Kearse was a beast with 2 sacks and numerous QB pressures.

Oklahoma Outlaws 24  Houston Gamblers - Players of the Game was Oklahoma QB Matt Cassell (25/40 248 yards 2 TD) and Oklahoma WR Hines Ward (10 catches 102 yards 2 TD).  The undefeated Houston team was actually leading 21-3 going into the 4th quarter, but a total defensive breakdown allowed Oklahoma to score 18 unanswered points, stealing the victory.  Houston S James Butler had 3 sacks and Oklahoma S Jim Leonhard had 2 sack, which is quite a rare feat seeing safeties blitzes this effective in a game.

San Antonio Gunslingers 23  Memphis Showboats 13 - Player of the Game is San Antonio HB LenDale White (30 carries 108 yards 2 TD).  This game was a defensive battle most of the game and though Memphis was able to score 13 late 4th quarter points, San Antonio's defensive effort was too much for Memphis to overcome.

New Jersey Generals 38  Oakland Invaders 19 - Player of the Game is New Jersey HB Frank Gore (23 carries 137 yards 2 TD).  The New Jersey pass rush sacked Oakland QB Jay Cutler (26/34 265 yards 2 TD) 8 times and punished him all game long with additional pressures and hits.  The Oakland O-Line just could not protect their QB.  Oakland DT Spencer Johnson had 3 tackles for losses and a sack while New Jersey DE Antonio Smith had 2 sacks.

Los Angeles Express 27  Birmingham Stallions 13 - Player of the Game is Los Angeles HB Clinton Portis (17 carries 120 yards 1 TD).  Los ANgeles defense only allowed Birmingham to gain 216 yards all game long and was able to knock out Birmingham QB Matt Leinhart for the game with a toe injury.  He will miss next week's game.  Birmingham S Ed Reed had 2 interceptions.

Arizona Wranglers 23  Jacksonville 0 - Player of the Game is Arizona WR Brandon Marshall (8 catches 165 yards).  Disaster struck early for Jacksonville midway through the 1st quarter when Jacksonville QB Kyle Orton was sacked by Arizona DT Kris Jenkins.  Orton's knee got hit the wrong way, tearing the ACL, ending Orton's season.  The backup QB's Marcus Conner (5/15 63 yards 1 Int) and Cody Pickett (2/7 4 yards 1 Int) were ineffective.  Tough break for Jacksonville and I suspect they will struggle the rest of the season due to their sub-standard backups.

Tampa Bay Bandits 34  Denver Gold 7 - Player of the Game is CB Jeremetrius Butler (6 tackles 1 int 1 TFL 4 PBU).  The Tampa Bay secondary intercepted Denver QB Shaun King 5 times, killing numerous Denver drives and giving the Tampa Bay offense short fields to work with all game long.

Utilizing FBPro98 with the VPNFL files, rating system and renamed stock gameplans, I am currently playing a 12 team, USFL league.  I GM all 12 teams in regards to roster management, drafting, free agency, etc. The renamed stock gameplans take care of the gameplans and profiles) that started in the year 2000.  I am currently in week 9 of the 2001 season.  I am digging this league so much, I decided to share on this forum.  The first couple of posts will show the history of the inaugural season (season stats, standings, playoffs, etc.).  Then I will provide week by week results with interesting notes from that week.  Hope you will follow along!

This is a great idea!

END OF SEASON HOUSE CLEANING BEFORE NEW LEAGUE YEAR STARTS

The following potential free agents either resigned with their teams or were franchised.  The Players with an (F) after their names did not agree to contract terms and were Franchised.  All others agreed to contract terms.

Gramatica Martin Arizona K
Finn Jim Birmingham FB
Booker Marty Birmingham WR
Adams Flozell Boston T (F)
Surtain Patrick Chicago CB (F)
Nguyen Dat Chicago LB
Chavous Corey Denver CB (F)
Williams Josh Denver DT
Azumah Jerry Denver S

Liwienski Chris Los Angeles G
Ricks Mikhael Los Angeles TE
Coleman Roderick Michigan DT
Alexander Shaun Michigan HB
Lindell  Rian Michigan K
Porter Joey Michigan LB
Becht Anthony Michigan TE
Bailey Champ New Jersey CB
Williams Jamal New Jersey DT (F)
Jackson Brad Oakland LB
Schulters Lance Oakland S
Heiden Steve Oakland TE
Burress Plaxico Tampa Bay WR (F)
Meester Brad Washington C
Rucker Mike Washington DE (F)

It looks like a number of players have agreed to contract terms with their teams, while others have been franchised. Franchising a player means that the team has designated him as a "franchise player," which allows the team to keep the player for one more year at a specified salary, even if the player wants to become a free agent. It seems like some notable players who were franchised include Flozell Adams of the Boston team, Patrick Surtain of the Chicago team, Corey Chavous of the Denver team, Jamal Williams of the New Jersey team, and Plaxico Burress of the Tampa Bay team. These players are likely to play for their respective teams for one more year unless a trade or a release occurs. On the other hand, some players who have agreed to contract terms with their teams include Martin Gramatica of the Arizona team, Jim Finn of the Birmingham team, Marty Booker of the Birmingham team, Dat Nguyen of the Chicago team, Chris Liwienski of the Los Angeles team, and Anthony Becht of the Michigan team. These players are likely to continue playing for their respective teams for the upcoming season.
