Is the 98 football manager game that good?

It really is.  22 years later, there still isn't a graphical football simulator out there that can do what this game can do.

Fourth Quarter
Oakland - Feely 32 FG, 0:23
New Jersey - Hayes 1 pass from Pennington (Vanderjagt kick), 3:58

New Jersey's offense, due to the stellar play of HB Amos Zereoue, ran all over the Oakland defense and the New Jersey defense, led by rookie LB Bart Scott, absolutely dominated Oakland's offense.  New Jersey has clinched a playoff spot and could win the division with a win next week.  After a 3 game layoff due to injury, Oakland QB Tim Couch struggled all game long and could not consistently succeed in the red zone.

Los Angeles - Rackers 41 FG, 12:36
Los Angeles - Westbrook 25 run (2-Point conversion failed), 13:44
Birmingham - Dwight 5 pass from Manning (Manning run), 15:00

Overtime
Birmingham - Dawson 18 FG, 2:24

Wow, the last 4 minutes of the 4th quarter was about as wild as I have seen.  Here is the timeline:

1.  With 3:57 left in the game Birmingham K Phil Dawson kicked a 29yd field goal to give Birmingham the lead 14-13

2.  In the ensuing kickoff, Los Angeles WR Dennis Northcutt returns the kickoff return 56 yards to the Birmingham 29 yard line.

3.  After a 3 and out, with 2:30 left on the clock, Los Angeles K Neil Rackers kicked a 41yd field goal to put Los Angeles ahead 16-14.

4.  With 1:38 left in the game, Birmingham QB Peyton Manning finds WR Marty Booker in the flat who is then immediately stripped of the ball by Los Angeles CB Ike Reese; Los Angeles LB Julian Peterson picks up the ball and returns it to the Birmingham 25 yard line!

5.  On the very next play, Los Angeles HB Bryan Westbrook takes a sweep off tackle and runs down the sideline for a 25yd TD!  For some weird, idiotic reason, Los Angeles lines up for a 2pt conversion.  Los Angeles fails to convert the 2pt conversion and the score is now 22-14.

6.  After a squib kick,  Birmingham executes a clutch 10 play 63 yard drive down to the Los Angeles 5 yard line with :03 left in the game.

7.  With the clock at zero, Birmingham QB Peyton Manning throws a dart in the back of the endzone to WR Tim Dwight for the TD!

8.  Birmingham lines up for the 2pt conversion.  Ball is snapped to QB Peyton Manning who runs a delayed keep to convert the score! Onto overtime we go in the most clutch fashion I think I have seen in 22 years playing this game!

In overtime, Birmingham won the toss and never looked back as WR James Williams return the kickoff 47 yards to the Los Angeles 37 yard line and the Birmingham offense moves the ball down to the 1 yard line for the game winning 18yd field goal.

Just an amazing sequence of events extremely late in the game.  And in retrospect, a terrible decision by Los Angeles to go for the 2pt conversion. There was no need to do it.

Washington has lost 3 of their last 4 games and this loss clinched the Atlantic division for New Jersey and worse, if Arizona wins their game, Washington would be tied for the wildcard spot with Arizona.   Washington is going to struggle to defend their championship; the team is just too up and down.  Michigan has clinched the Central division title for the 2nd time in the last 3 years.  If they can get consistency from QB Aaron Brooks, they could make some playoff noise.

Chicago QB Joe Hamilton came into a tough situation.  He started the year as the 3rd string QB and then watched the team fall to 1-6 with two struggling QBs in front of him.  To try to give the team a spark, the coach turned to Hamilton and after 4 games, his stats are: 51% completion %, 1069 yards 8 TD 0 INT.  The Blitz are 2-2 in his starts.  The other two quarterbacks in 8 previous games were: 55% completion %, 1329 yards 4 TD 8 INT and the Blitz were 1-6 in these games.  Hamilton has been a revelation.

On the flipside, what a miserable season for Tampa Bay.  To go from 10-2 last season to 3-8 this season speaks to huge problems that is going to require bold action next year.  Their front 7 will need to be rebuilt.  And the team has to focus on not turning the ball over; that has killed them this year.

With this win, Arizona ties Washington for the final playoff spot.  The last game of the season will decide the last playoff spot.  As for Denver, hopefully this game was an anomaly.  They don't need any let up on their way to the playoffs.

The last wildcard spot is on the line between Washington and Arizona.  Washington win and they are in.  Washington loses and Arizona is in.  If they both win or lose, Washington gets in on the basis of the tiebreakers.  Will be pretty crappy to see Michigan, as a division winner get in over a potential 8 win team (Arizona), but it is what it is; division winners get into the playoffs.  Maybe one day, I will reseed, but not today.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Offensive - Chicago QB Joe Hamilton

Defensive - Denver CB Corey Chavous

New Jersey - White 61 pass from Pennington (Vanderjagt kick), 10:27

Boston finishes the season winning 5 of their last six games.  Had Boston not lost 3 games in a row during weeks 4,5 and 6, they would be a playoff team and a strong one at that.  I think they are going to be very strong next season.  New Jersey is on the way to the playoffs, but their offensive struggles are going to hinder them.  If they are not running the ball well, their offense shuts down.  We will see how they hold up in the playoffs.

With the win, Washington clinches the wildcard spot, so the Arizona Wranglers will be shut out of a playoff spot.  Can they defend their title? We shall see.  On the other end of the spectrum, Philadelphia clinches the 1st pick of the 2003 2KFL draft.  The top 6 players coming in the draft are:

Gross Jordan   T
Romo Tony   QB
Williams Kevin   DT
Polamalu Troy   S
Barnett Nick   LB
Johnson Andre   WR

Philadelphia QB Tom Brady has been sack a league leading 47 times this season so selecting a potential franchise Left Tackle seems like the logical pick.  Though picking a linebacker would be VERY tempting as Philadelphia has a sub-par linebacking corps, protecting the quarterback has to be job one next season.

Chicago Blitz (3-9) 0 7 3 3 -- 13

First Quarter
Birmingham - Finn 1 run (Dawson kick), 5:19
Birmingham - Dawson 26 FG, 14:45

Second Quarter
Birmingham - Collins 13 pass from Manning (Dawson kick), 5:16
Chicago - Taylor 11 pass from Hamilton (Edinger kick), 11:12

Third Quarter
Chicago - Edinger 21 FG, 11:42

Fourth Quarter
Chicago - Edinger 30 FG, 4:09

With this victory, Birmingham could sneak their way into the playoffs with a Michigan loss (via winning the 2KFL Central division).  The only thing holding Birmingham back from being a perennial playoff contender is their failure to establish an offensive identity. With this defense, this team should be contending for division titles yearly.

Chicago clinches the 2nd pick in the 2KFL draft and with the play of former 3rd string QB Joe Hamilton, Chicago will have to think long and hard about drafting QB Tony Romo as their QB of the future or rolling with 3rd year vet.  If Hamilton can improve his accuracy, he could be a star since he is so careful about turning the ball over.  Fascinating decision ahead for Chicago.

With no time left on the clock, Michigan QB Aaron Brooks throws a 28yd TD pass to WR Antwaan Randle-El for the game-winning TD.  The win clinches the division for Michigan.  Michigan usually plays to the level of thier competition, so hopefully they can raise their games in the playoff.

Tampa Bay concludes a nightmare season that saw them lose 7 more games than they did last season.  Drafting defense will be thier main priority in the draft.

The 2KFL is such a tough league, there are (3) teams with winning records that will not be playing in the playoffs.  Two of them played here (Boston is the 3rd team).  Arizona losing 3 of their last 5 games killed their playoff hopes.  Oakland Finishing 3-3 in their last six games is what doomed them.  Teams have to play more consistently during the year as only 33% of 2KFL teams make the playoffs.  Arizona and Oakland's inconsistency will have them watching the playoffs at home this year.

Denver limps into the playoffs after ;losing 2 games in a row.  Despite finishing with the leagues best record, you would think a team needs momentum going into the playoffs.  We will see what happens.  Los Angeles lack of pass defense haunted them all year long despite a very good offense.  I suspect the are going to look to upgrade their secondary next year.

WILDCARD PLAYOFF GAME 1

Washington Federals (8-4) 0 3 15 10 -- 28

Washington - Warrick 7 pass from Hasselbeck (McGuire kick), 7:59
Washington - McGuire 27 FG, 11:48
Denver - Enis 29 pass from Griese (Brown kick), 13:34

In a rematch of last year's 2KFL Bowl, Denver gets their revenge and will return to their 2nd consecutive 2KFL Bowl by taking down the team that defeated them last year to win the title.  With :35 left in the 4th quarter, Denver QB Brian Griese a 29yd strike to backup HB Curtis Enis for the game winning touchdown and a trip to the 2KFL Bowl.  Washington's championship title defense comes to an end as their defense could not stop Denver's 9 play, 67 yard game-winning drive.

Washington's main issue was running the ball after HB Edgerrin James went to the Injured Reserve for the year.  Backup HB Rudi Johnson was not able to sustain the success Washington had on the ground with James.  On defense, Washington subpar Cornerbacks must be address in the draft to help a pretty strong defense overall.

WILDCARD PLAYOFF GAME 2

Michigan Panthers (7-5) 3 3 3 14 -- 23
New Jersey Generals (8-4) 0 7 0 3 -- 10

First Quarter
Michigan - Lindell 37 FG, 4:22

Second Quarter
New Jersey - Zereoue 6 run (Vanderjagt kick), 12:45
Michigan - Lindell 45 FG, 14:09

Third Quarter
Michigan - Lindell 37 FG, 9:46

Fourth Quarter
Michigan - Brooks 1 run (Lindell kick), 3:52
New Jersey - Vanderjagt 53 FG, 8:05
Michigan - Bryson 50 run (Lindell kick), 10:37

Michigan goes on the road and defeats New Jersey to get their 2nd trip in 3 years to the 2KFL Bowl.  New Jersey QB Chad Pennington was knocked out of the game early in the 4th quarter with a concussion after a vicious sack by Michigan S Earl Little which limited their ability to come back.  Though New Jersey's inconsistency on offense was ultimately their downfall this game, the New Jersey run defense got gashed for 232 yards, the most they have given up this season.

Michigan will go into the 2KFL Bowl a big underdog to Denver, but I do not count this team out as they have the ability to pass the ball downfield and will be getting back stud HB Shaun Alexander from injury.  This will be a good game.

As for New Jersey, this is a very disappointing end to their season, but their future is very bright as they have the best young defense in the league (led by LB Bart Scott, a rookie, LB Antonio Pierce, 2nd year player, DE James Harrison, a rookie, and 5th year vet 2KFL MVP S Deon Grant) and the ability to fix their offense by drafting or acquiring in free agency a better Wide Receiver than they had this year.  WR Hakim Az-Zahir will be back from his year-long suspension during game 7 next year, so getting better wideouts is imperative.

2KFL Bowl MVP - Michigan WR Antwaan Randle-El

With 5:17 left in the fourth quarter and Denver leading 24-20 from their own 26 yard line on 3rd and 18,  Denver QB Brian Griese throws a crushing interception into double coverage to Michigan CB Fakhir Brown, who returns the ball to the Denver 35 yard line.  Griese had WR Brandon Stokely matched up one-on-one going down the seam and he had FB Rock Cartwright in the flat wide open, yet he makes the awful decision to throw to a double-covered WR Dane Looker and it cost his team the title.

In the ensuing drive, Michigan HB Shawn Bryson, a game day starter when HB Shaun Alexander was a late game day scratch due to his injury, was able to punch the ball in from the Denver 8 yard line for the game winning touchdown, on the road in Denver, for the 2KFL Bowl championship.  3 Denver turnovers (2 int, 1 fum) were really the difference in the game as everything else was really evenly matched (Michigan gained 319 yard in total offense, Denver gained 317 yards in total offense, Michigan was 5/13 on 3rd downs, Denver was 6/13, etc.).

Denver should be very disappointed in their loss, but those 2 late season loses, after a 9-1 start, was foreshadowing their weaknesses.  The Denver safeties in their secondary will need to be address for this team to stay strong.

Congratulations are in order for the Michigan Panthers.  They were a study in perseverance as their up and down season showed.  To go on the road twice and beat heavily favored home teams was a testament to their ability to rise to the challenge and fight through to the end.  Michigan has a strong offensive roster and a good defensive roster but they need consistency in order to defend their title next year.

2003 RETIREMENT

The following impact players decided to hang up the cleats and retire:

Los Angeles DE John Abraham, the best defensive end in the league the last 3 season decided to retire.  This is a huge loss for the Express and not one they can easily replace.

New Jersey WR Troy Edwards decided to retire.  He was a starter last year after WR Hakim Az-Zahir was suspended for the year.  New Jersey's need for a receiver just got that much bigger.

Michigan CB Fahkir Brown, the hero of 2KFL Bowl III, decides to retire.  He was a strter the last two years and was effective.
