So, the battle for playoffs heats up the east... I must say that this Cage GHL is much more thrilling and competetive then Buzzer.

Very true.  I suppose it would be cool to see a handful (or two) of players in every league developing faster than they currently are.  But with veteran players now decreasing earlier, I just don't see how you could balance the two.  Vets get the performance bonus, but younger players would become much more valuable than older players from a trade perspective.  Right now it looks like the best 21-22 year olds are improving at a rate of 1-2 overall per season, while the lesser developers are lucky to gain a single overall in 2-3 seasons.

I'm ok with the current, slower development schedule.  Also, having the draft for Season will also give teams a chance to juice their development by ideally getting 1 or 2 players that can slide into their starting lines either the current season or 1-2 seasons down the road, very similar to NHL now.  I like how some, not all, older players are tanking.  I find it realistic, if annoying to have one of those guys.  But not everyone plays to 35 as a top 6 player, nor should we expect them to.

I definitely don't want to see FAs pop up during the season.  As for trading, it's tough to find the perfect balance.  I see both points above.  I do like the idea of allowing trades and holding them until the end of the season.  It's a bit unrealistic, but does allow some "backroom" deals that go on between real GMs to be played out.  In fact, maybe not even have the game announce them until after the playoffs are over?!?!  Like a big trade/FA day in NHL!  Tune in to just see where everyone moved!

Chemistry between players is a bit of a thing actually. Some players will just work with others better. It's not that big a thing because too much of this is easily a bad thing. This is as I understand things currently and I could be wrong.

In terms of more tactical options line wise for individual players that would be interesting. As for different lines while it might not be exactly as you mean an energy line will throw their bodies around more.

As for player development Paul I think Peek is more talking about the fact that many younger players, once they hit about 20-21 their development suddenly stops to a crawl. It is a consistent thing across most players in 2 game worlds that I have noticed. It might be because the players are reaching their skill cap that we cannot see however if that is the case a 21yo 81 overall player should not be listed as showing great potential with excellent trade value for the GHL for example. Also in terms of preventing what we had before remember that each player has a growth cap for each skill. Not every player can get to 90+ in everything anymore.

    Hey,

I am still somewhat a n00b, but here is what I collected so far after the new game started (season and some little in Buzzer and almoust a season in Cage)... as I said, take it with a grain of salt, maybe someone more experienced will have some more things to add.

    In no particular order...

    - Development of players: They seem to progress too slow. Especially the young ones... I would expect them to grow a bit more. Can't say I have older players regress quick, as I don't have too many.

    - Underestimation and overall performance of players: Now, regarding this I already notified Anders, but current Buzzer GHL season is really weird. Top team on Eastern division is performing way above their players skill (even the goalkeepers). There is also team in Western that is 5th or 6th, that has even worse players (both teams are promoted from SHL). Also, players on Buzzer with most points are 80 to 82 rated, with some serious flaws in their skills (like shooting for example, but still topping the charts). Now sure what is going on there, looks like a bug to me.

    - Signing free agents during season: I was one of those who asked for that to be removed, however I do think that whole idea would be better if there would be a player or two that showed on free agents. I would keep them in lowish average rating tho. No superstars popping up. Just a journeyman, now and then. That way, people could patch a whole or two, without unbalancing the whole league, or devalueing players too much/if any.

    - Trading when playoffs start for non playoff teams: Now, here is the tricky one. I almoust wanted to get knocked out of playoffs last season (eventually I did, but due to being outplayed by better team) so I can start trading as soon as possible and having advantage over those who are still there and want the same players I do. Not sure how to approach this one, but current system is somewhat abusable. For example, the best player in Cage GHL (Elie-Breton) is in possibilty of getting relegated trough possible playoffs and manager could trade him to some teams for picks or prospects before he losses him due to 1w contract. Teams that are out of playoffs can move in for him if he relegates, since they will have small chance of signing him for free later due to team reputation, while many other teams are still locked in playoffs. Its just a stupid example, but its abuseable. Maybe to allow all teams to trade when playoffs start, but those trades would start being effective last day of the season when everything is played and before relegated people lose players to contracts.

now to suggestions... (I am sure someone already suggested some of those, but still...)

    - Chemistry between the lines: We need more micromanagment, please. To give more control in putting our lines/teams togeather. Maybe even of personality effect of how certain people blend with each other.

    - More tactical options: Possiblity to set playstyle individially, like for example, telling players individually to go tough or gentle. That way we could have certain lines doing that, or even just players. Not just entire team. This is just an example, but I would get things complex here, I dunno, FM style The more we feel in control of our team, the more we will dive into the game.

The dream is dead.  After getting 34 points during a recent stretch of 16 games, it looked like Elite were poised to not only climb out of the basement, but make a run for 10th place and avoid regulation.  Now losers of four straight against less admirable opponents than during that 16 game stretch, one against said 10th place team last night, there is just too much ground to make up.  Still playing for the play-in game is the best we can hope for.  My only hope is to beat up on Turkey Creek during the two times I will likely meet them in the play-in playoffs!

I'll start with these two, because I love both suggestions.  IMO, the more in depth, the better.  About a year ago, I made a suggestion that teams should not be limited to a single offensive or defensive tactic.  Instead, it would be cool if we were allowed to play different tactics per line.  For example, Line 1 could use Possession, Line 2 is Dump and Chase, Line 3 could Crash the Net and so on.  Or if we wanted to limit it in any way, allow teams to become familiar with 2 offensive and defensive tactics, each, instead of all of them.  That way we could build a more versatile team, which would drive interest.

This one I don't agree with.  I think player progression is right where it should be.  One of the main reasons for the game refresh was to get ratings back in check.  If players increased like they used to, every GHL team would again be full of 90+ players and it would take a lot of the strategy out of it.  IMO, it's good to see some top line players in GHL that have an attribute flaw here and there.  Also, I've seen some younger players who are improving quite nicely.  But overall, I think current development is optimal for the game long term.

*Edit: either that, or we increase the rate of improvement, which would add some excitement, but start the ratings much lower.  Top 6 guys in GHL draft right now are 85-88.  We could start them at 75-78.

My original suggestion was for a trade deadline around day 66, which happens now, and for it to be locked through end of season.  Anders went a different direction and opened it up again during playoffs for a few reasons (1) to keep eliminated managers interested (2) to allow the team that got relegated via playoff a chance to make moves before next season.  Both of these are understandable.  To your point, it definitely is not the most fair approach, but the goal should be to make the playoffs and try to win it all.  If eliminated teams are making moves during that time, then it is what it is.

I think there is a simple solution here.  Teams who are still in the playoffs can make verbal offers.  If I'm in 11th or 12th place and have to battle for relegation, I would already be talking to all the playoff team managers and coming up with a plan in case of relegation.  But I guess I'm also optimistic that relegating managers would accept the "best" offer for their players to keep things fair and not the very first offer thrown their way.

This is also the reason why I think players should ask for a bit of money during negotiations, so it's harder to score a guy like Elie Breton and also have a lot of depth.  I feel that if you have a few 94+ players on your roster, they should come with a high cap hit and there should be holes in your roster elsewhere.

This topic is definitely worth a lengthy discussion.  Interested to keep it going and see what others have to say.

    Player Advanced

To start this section off I will give the biggest mistake I see regularly from many managers regarding players. Overall fixation. Overall means nothing. Yes, it means nothing. Seriously it means nothing. No really. It means nothing. Ok, it means something. But only what you can expect a player to ask for when it comes to contracts. Beyond that it means about as much to you as the favorite color of that person you don't know driving a boat somewhere in an ocean nowhere near you that you will never meet. The player's individual skills are what is important. Let me give you an example. 2 players. Player one (P1) has an overall of 80. Player two (P2) an overall of 79. The mistake I see many managers make is going for higher overall players in FA when they don't need to and playing higher overall players higher in their lineup over more skilled players. There are at least two mismanagement issues happening here that I will get into much more deeper later. Let's look at the skills of the players I gave as examples.

            P1 | P2
    Spd  85 | 75
    Pas  75 | 85
    Pct   85 | 85
    Sht   75 | 85
    Def   75 | 75
    Phy  85 | 75
    Spi   75 | 75
    End  85 | 75
    Fof   85 | 85

P1 is nothing more than a 4th line SHL or GHL checker or a poor choice for a BHL offensive forward whereas P2 is a player, depending upon the talent of the league, that can potentially play a 2nd or 3rd line offensive role in the GHL.

Player roles. How to identify them and using that to determine how to put your team together.

To be good at doing this yourself requires that you do a little bit of homework. Specifically scouting. More specifically scouting your league. To identify what roles a player can fill you need to know what the general "best" of your league is. You basically want to find out what the best 20 of x look like in your league. For instance I know that I have two of the best 9 playmakers (passing and puckhandling skills combined) in my game world (I used to have 3 of them but I believe in giving something to get something from the AI aka I like to make fair trades with the AI) in Mikulas Rakita and Waide Rose, yet they are 84 and 83 overall respectively. They are the two lowest overall of the top 9 but there is no reason they should not be in any other teams top 6 forward group. There are only 7 other players that are as good playmakers in the entire game world. How about a more extreme example. There is a 79 overall player in my game world that is one of the top 19 playmakers of the entire game world. The next closest of the rest of the 19 on overall is 83. That player should be playing a top 6 forward role in the GHL because again there are only 18 other players in the entire game world as good as they are as a playmaker. Yes, the player is pretty much crap outside of his offensive skills but he is the perfect example of a role player. He is an amazing offensive GHL talent relative to the current league and should be playing in a top 6 role. That is how you identify the roles a player can potentially play but how do you determine where to play them in your lineup?

Creating a lineup sounds easy to do however it is a lot easier to mess it up than it is to get it right. This is where I see a lot of managers getting it wrong. The first thing I do when making a line is to decide on whom I am building that line around. Choose a player for each line and then find 2 complimentary players to play alongside them. I prefer to build around my centers. It makes things rather straightforward. No matter the 4 players you choose the next step is building the lineup around those players via finding players that complement the players you are building each line around. The key to doing that well is identifying the strengths of your players. If the player you chose for your first line is a sniper you want to get a playmaker to play with him and the third be good, but not great, at both just in case either one of the other two players have a bad game to prevent the line from being shut down. Likewise, if the player for the 2nd line is more of a playmaker you want to be finding a shooter and another who can do a bit of both. What about if the player is a two way forward? Well, the key thing to remember is that, at the end of the game, the goal is to score more points than your opponent. This means that you want your more defensive lines to be able to contribute offensively as well every once in a while. Thus when building those lines take a look at their offensive skills and build them with that still in mind but with less emphasis.

So this is my IHL team's roster.

Something you will notice is a lot of centers. It wasn't intentional. That said let me go over how I built the lines and why I did what I did. First I chose who I would build the lines around. As I said I prefer to build my lines around my centers. The 6 best centers I have are, in no particular order, Chenard, Keef, Gagnier, Spiva, Sibelius, and Sibley. Of those 6 I went with Gagnier, Chenard, Sibelius, and Spiva.

I built my first line around Gagnier. He is my best offensive center and you want your first line to be your best offensive line. That said Gagnier is a do everything offensive player which means I want to pair him with a playmaker and a scorer. The idea behind that is if any one player on that line has a bad game the other two can comfortably take up the slack without much difficulty as, no matter what, there is still a playmaker and shooter. My best playmaker and my best scorer are Fausher and Mckennon respectively so I put them with Gagnier. For an offensive line you want to focus on offensive talent no matter what tactics you are using nor the rest of the skill set of the player in question. Even if everything else skill wise is bad if the player has some of the best offensive skills on your team play him in your top 6.

I built my second line around Chenard. At this point, things got tricky for me because you want your 2nd line to be your 2nd best offensive line however that couldn't have been done if I gave Keef his own line as he is my 2nd best playmaker and I don't really have a suitable 3rd playmaker for a top 6 playmaker role. Thus instead of giving Keef his own line I put him on the wing here and gave the line a shooter in Markkula for the best offensive balance I could manage.

The 3rd line is where you ideally want to start really striking a balance between offense and defense. While this line isn't ideal in that manner I know it should be an ok line as it was my best line in the LIHL the season prior. The center is Sibelius and the two wingers are Hoy and Lymburner. Again if you look you see a playmaker, scorer and a third that can do a bit of both on that line. As I said prior this helps assure offensive balance on the line making it harder to shut down.

The 4th line can easily be a do anything line that you can scrape together for specialist purposes. I've created checking and energy lines with my 4th line and found success with such set ups both times by finding the right players. However, this line is just what is left with what I have. It is centered by Spiva with Stpeter and Wahlstrom as the wingers. While it isn't ideal and is kind of ho-hum with nothing really interesting going on I didn't really have an option at this point.

Im rather new in gameplanhockey, but not in gm games general. This game has by far most potential from all i have played. I have few suggestions that i think would make this game better.

    1) Games could be spectaded live. Maybe watching play-by-play instead straight knowing the score? So simulating the one play-by-play. That would make game much more thrilling to watch. Cant imagine the mind in GHL playoff final spectating overtime play-by-play live!

    2) Trophies after refular season and playoffs too. More the better, both team and player based.

3)Stats of player selected stars of the week in that week.

4)If possible, adding some pictures to headlines etc. Maybe picture of player scoring in his team jersey when selected to stars of week. Picture of players celebrating goal when opening preview of game? Goalie making save etc. They could be standard faces alltime, only changing jerseys name and number. This would make gameworld more alive.

    5) interview of manager in some situations. Questions that manager can choose answer and then posted in headlines. Maybe in big trades, winning or losing streaks, player breaking trough etc.

    6) feature to compare two players ratings, profile, contract everything

Just few ideas. Would like to know if some sre good and allso if you think some or all are terrible. Thanks and sorry for bad english.

Ugh, I actually hate the B's jersey and therefore Paul's!  haha.  But yes, it is subjective.  I prefer to see people's jersey's that are original, give me something I haven't seen before and memorable.  I actually really like Sheshegwaning Dragons jersey a lot!  Also, it's just a fun team name to say, if not spell!

Related, I wish there was a way to incorporate our jerseys more into the game.  Honestly, other than in our signature on here and on our team homepage, does it even show up anywhere?  Our emblem shows up on the scores and recaps, but not the full jersey.  I think it would be kind of cool (although graphic heavy from a programming standpoint!!!) to see the jersey next to the team name on the Preview and Recap screens, plus in the standings.  Just a very minor opinion.

I also think that had you bothered to scroll down to the bottom of the standings, you would have loved The Elite's jersey as well!  haha.  Still miss my old emblem shown here as my avatar.  Couldn't find anything remotely close.

I've got 2 suggestions that I hope can be added into that 20 day trade lock rule.

    1) Entry level players do not have the restriction. They were allowed to be traded as prospects before having signed any deal, it just makes sense to me that they don't have the restriction handed to them as soon as they finally sign a deal.

    2) This one only applies to mid-season free agent signings. The restriction would essentially be that any free agent signing (preferably entry level contracts excluded) after day 6 would be unable to be assigned to the minors for 20 days. If we go back to the start of Dangles, its big problem was that 1 team was essentially able to sign nearly every free agent with a snowball effect at less than most managers were offering. This was possible for 2 reasons; reputation and the minors. Coming back to when the new updated worlds were released, everybody was given an equal reputation to prevent an unfair advantage to the older managers as well as the managers that played fast worlds over slow worlds. And that worked all fine and dandy as it was mostly best offer gets the player with a little bit of random luck.

However, the snowball effect is still possible. Now that the seasons have all begun, the team reputations are shifting up and down to reflect how well teams are doing. The reputation thing itself isn't a bad idea; my issue starts with the fact that I've noticed good free agents popping up and then are snagged by better teams with better offers than some worse off teams made. To me, this is still acceptable since a free agent probably wants to go a more successful team than a team looking towards relegation. Where I really develop a problem with the system is when these rare free agents appear and better teams snag them up and then immediately get assigned to the minors. If a team plays him, fine, I have no issue, but if the player is immediately assigned its basically telling me a manager is being super greedy and signing players just so that other teams cannot sign new free agents and improve themselves. This is rather unfair for managers less fortunate at the start of the season. It also enables the snowball effect to continually exist as managers are able to assign players for a fraction of their cost and then once again make more offers for the limited number of free agents that appear mid season.

My reasoning for the 20 day mid-season free agent assignment restriction is that it prevents teams for going after every new free agent solely in an effort to prevent other teams from getting them and essentially abusing the minor system. If a team actually wants to play the player, then the restriction wouldn't really affect the manager as he/she can still do so. I suggest that this happens for only mid-season signings since there is a lot of free agent movement during the preseason and sometimes managers get 2 out of  2 free agents they aimed for while only expecting to possibly get 1. It also makes sense from a players perspective. If a strong free agent can expect to be paid millions, why would he go with a team that's going to immediately assign him to the minors and then only make a few hundred thousand. Yes 1-way/2-way deal exist, but I don't think good players sign 2-way deals expecting to be immediately sent down.

This. Any sort of FA spawning should be kept to minimum, and timed at one certain point (start) of a season.

The most frustrating thing is when you acquire a player in a trade, and then see a better one magically appear in FA a day later.

To be fair, this was occurring in the old worlds as well.  Starting around day 40, every 4th day or so, players would randomly appear in the FA list.  There was a group of about 15 managers (myself included) who would bid on them.  I was in SHL at the time and whenever a GHL manager bid it was game over.  The difference was the players were always SHL caliber players (SHL starter/GHL affiliate), not GHL starters.  But anyways...

I also agree with Steve that we can't fault the managers who are bidding.  If it's in the game it should be fair play.  But agree with the overall theme here that it should be changed because there's too many loopholes and a certain unfairness to it all.

There should be NO Free Agents after the initial list generation at the beginning of the season UNLESS a player gets cut!  Having these random players show up is ONLY going to reward players that have hours a day to follow the FA list, which is unfair to the majority of players.  I'm not faulting the manager that picked up the latest one, but the SYSTEM!  This is almost as bad as pay-for-play style systems.  The point of GPHM is that we all compete as managers evenly on that skill level, not on how much time we can devote to the game (stats analysis not included).

There is a thing with FA, that somehow allows loopholes in trading system. I will try to explain the logic behind it:

I trade 2 of my 88 guys for a 92 guy (for example). Then I sign FA player, the stronger the better. Then do it again. Etc. In some time I will have team stacked with much better players. If I am careful, salary cap won't be a problem, you can always waive.

If FA players keep appearing they are devalueing players we currently have.
