I'm torn. I'm currently 1 point out of the 8th and final playoff spot with 8 games remaining. I'm 14 points clear of 13th. My conundrum is, what value is there to pushing to make playoffs? I doubt I can upset either of the top-2 seeds. So, in essence, I'd just be screwing myself out of a good draft pick. Is there any value to making playoffs? Do players develop a lot in a short period of time? Does team rep go up and players sign for cheaper? What are the pros of that outcome? With as weak as this year's draft is, it seems a lot more pragmatic to play my youngsters the rest of the year to give them GHL development time and take (hopefully) a top-5 pick.

In my experience, playing in the playoffs will give you more manager and team reputation which in turn will let you get high rated players for a cheaper price. Depending on the player, they can either grow a lot or stay stationary. I once had some guys jump from a 88 to a 90-91, but that was also the year I won the cup. Other years, they usually grow 1 overall or stay stationary. the pros of making the playoffs is gaining reputation and maybe a possible overall jump for some players. The cons of making the playoffs is that if you aren't a top team, you wont get every far and you lose a potential top 5 pick as you mentioned, but also there is the lack of fulfillment of not making the playoffs(wheather its exiting early or not making them at all). If the draft class is decent enough I would risk going into the playoffs, but since this years is a bit weaker than previous years, I would suggest playing younger players so they can "get used to" the big club and vs big league teams.

Thanks for your reply and comments. I fell short and landed 9th last year, a significant reduction in draft value from previous seasons. I'll give it another game or two and see what I can get. I suspect, unless I keep this winning roll going, the last 5+ games will be a young squad for reasons you mentioned. Good luck the rest of the year!

You bring up a great point.  I suppose if the top 5-6 draft prospects are that much better than the players who would go 7-16, I might consider tanking to get that stud player.  But being in a Slow world, I put more emphasis on short term.  I play to win.  Always.  If there's a chance I'd make the playoffs I'd go for it and try to pull a few upsets.

There will always be that tough decision between going for the cup or staying low enough to get a top 5 pick. Since Howitzer is a fast paced world, I would risk dropping spots to gain a better prospect, but this year's draft is pretty disappointing to tank for. I would actually try to win in the playoffs so that your team can gain some reputation and so that players get used to playing in playoffs. Anyways Good Luck on the rest of the season, and possibly the playoffs if you choose to go for it!

I've won 9 of my last 10 and just beat the top team. I think my team is telling me what I should do. All-in it is! Up to 6th now setting up a potential series vs a team I've consistently done well against for some reason.

Penultimate game of the year could be a big one given how close we are!

And just like that, lost all the recent games. 2 points up on 9th playing 2nd when 9th is playing last. I may go through all this and miss playoffs anyway - finishing with a mid-round pick as a reward.

So, best finish every in the regular season - finishing 5th. Ended up sweeping the 4th seed in a lopsided affair which was quite surprising. Surprised to find I play 8th in round 2. I'm not complaining, but 5v8 and 2v6 seems a bit odd. Is it a fixed bracket playoff thing? 1v8 and 5v4 on one side and 2v7 and 3v6 on the other?

Thanks! Lucky for me, the first seed (and runaway season winner) lost game 3.

I hate my team. LOL. I thought the year would go great since I got some of my key veterans returning, but all it did was just sink me in 16th early on. It took me 10 games to actually get out of 16th only to be stuck in 15th for 5-8 games. I stayed mediocre for the rest of the season then my team finally woke up but it was too late. I made a playoff push and on the last day of games, I beat my opponent 5-2, which I thought would seal my playoff hopes, but no I lost out the #8 seed to another team that had a goal differential of +4 and I had +3. It was quite disappointing and quite upsetting since this was my second time of not making playoffs in franchise history. I just wanted to share my story...BE Prepared no matter how good you think your team is! Good Luck to all teams in playoffs and everyone BE PREPARED, I WILL BE BACK! lol

And just like that my top player is out the rest of this round and I lost game 1 (at home) in a shootout. Grrrrr

I know im late but i wanted to reply to this. I been playing over 30 seasons and from what i saw , almost any team can win the playoffs. The game seems pretty weird to me. Sometimes you get the bad teams win against the good teams. The 8th position beat the first. It dont seem to be stable results at all. Sometimes you have a low rating player performing better than the higher rated. It seems to be pretty much anything from what i have seen. My team can be really bad for a period of time and suddenly start win games one after the other when i did no change at all. Its pretty weird. I doubt that the reputation of your team or the team spirit has anything to do. My team spirit can be all good and my team play against a team with bad team spirit and my team still lose anyway and i am wondering if this is just there for fun and have no impact at all. Sometimes i see a 39 year old player get full points while my young player with higher rating sucks... This season playoff i saw the first team get beaten even if it had a huge gap tetween the others and my team also got beaten by a lower rank team. It makes me want to quit the game sometimes. I feel that whatever i do does not have much influence on the results. Its almost like rolling a dice. For sure if you only have crappy player you risk lose but as soon as u get at some point , it seems to be pretty much nothing else than luck and computer decision. Sorry if i am so negative but thats what i personally observed. You know when your team gets beaten by the last rank team and then win against the first the next day and that it happens so often , there are reasons to believe that something is not right. Yes it can happen once in a while that the better team lose but it seems to happen alot and the results are only up and down for me and my teams. Its sad that we cant really know who is the better manager because whatever you do and whatever your team does dont mean that u did better. Just that the computer decided that it would be this way. Thats my opinion and i know some will not agree but i wont change my mind. The game is up and down and the stats dont follow the results.

I would be nice to know a bit more what knobs we have to turn and how they may influence the results. There is a fine line between not giving away enough and giving away too much from a developer point of view. I wish there was some thorough literature somewhere where we could read up on things. In any case, I'm "one roll of the dice" away from the title - only a couple years removed from struggling to stay up. I'm pretty happy about that but definitely do not expect a similar showing next year - I still consider myself a 7-12 team.
