Hi everyone,

I thought it would be cool to create national teams. I started off with Canada and USA as they have the biggest pool of players to select from. Please note that this is just a shortlist I created and what I thought are the best OVR players in Biscuit. I changed some centers to forward as they would be better in that position ofcourse.

Please feel free to change or discuss the teams. And if you want to create one of your own or from another country, that would be nice as well. So I always selected 6 centers, 10 forwards, 8 defenders and 3 goalies.

I wonder how these teams would end up in a best of seven :-)

Great post!

Quickly scraped together a Finnish team, had to go down to SHL to fill some spots. If I missed any players, just point that out and I'll edit the team.

I really like manager games with national teams, but it is complicated thing in here as nationality is only randomly generated for players. It would be nice, if manager country would play role - like that the team you are getting at the beginning is filled only with players of your nationality and the draft respect how many teams play at different levels - let's say if there are 5 managers from Canada, 5 from USA, 3 from Russia and 3 from Sweden in GHL, so you will have 5 Canadians and 5 Americans, 3 Russians and 3 Swedes in top16 places of the draft. Or something like that...

Because if you are from Belgium, there should be enough GHL level players from Belgium, so you can at least have a chance in making national team. That would support national identity and motivate you to get friends from your country to play this game. That would be my idea at least.

If there is not change like this and you want to start national teams now, you can in princple make 3 or 4 teams: Canada, USA, Europe... maybe West Europe and East Europe (although this naming would be incredibly unfortunate and could make a lot of people angry, especially those who were living in times of Soviet Union, but trying to be normal European democratic country now...). Those teams could have real managers based on some votes.

I will try to suggest the rosters for Europe...

Great goalies, really shitty defense, Erzac  :)  But it is actually slightly better than what I was excepting from single European country. Maybe one can make at least Sweden, Finland and Russia + the rest of the Europe teams.

Ok, I was quite surprised that I can make a decent team from even small country like Czech Republic.

But to compete with Canada or USA, I guess Europe need to merge some teams... I can work with Slovakia for example and called it Czechoslovakia. I just hope no Slovaks play Biscuit, they would hate me... maybe :D

I guess you can see why I would merge the two - Slovakia does not have enough centers, Czech Republic has only few forwards and basically nothing for LW, separately they both suck at D, Slovakia has really bad goal-tending etc.

Together this might be team that can play even matches with USA, but no one can match the defense of Canada, which is unreal.

Amazing idea for a post!  Love this type of stuff.

Although I am from the United States, I am of 100% Italian descent.  Therefore I have put a team full of Italians together.  Forza Azzurri!  And even though we would probably get relegated to IHL by mid-season, we have the most beautifully sounding team. ;)

Cool, Paul! I guess we need a nationality filter... NOW!

Btw. the names for Czech and Slovak are mixed up - many Slovaks in the game sound Czech and vice versa (Kantárik is very good example of that). But I don't mind and I guess most of people wouldn't see the difference :) Back in the prototype all Russians had ladies names, that was hilarious :D

I love this post!

Speaking of names being mixed up, have you noticed some Italian players in GPHM have Spanish sounding names?  Laurent Diego Alves, for example.  For roleplaying purposes, I pretend the player was born in Italy to an Italian mother and Spanish father. :)

Yes, I remember having a Susan and a Jessica on my team!  It was even more fun to say them with Russian accents.  I pretended that due to translation error, they filled out the visa form incorrectly.

I'm liking this more and more. Can we somehow convince Anders to include this into the game? NTs would be playing some games independently, 1 per week, or only before/after regular season as some World Cup/Championship. It would be interesting to have this also with injury risk and experience added to players. Each NT should have manager, elected from the managers in the world, I guess. And the manager will make the selection.

Love it!  Maybe a 16-team single elimination tournament that runs simultaneously with the playoffs.  NT managers are limited to choosing players who are NOT playing in their team's playoffs.  Or the other option is to run it during "Silly Season" and all players are eligible.

Checking through the top players, the following 16 countries could field teams.

Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czech Rep, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, Norway, Ukraine, Denmark, Austria, Latvia, Belarus (OK, that's 17...)

How to convince Anders

I agree - this is a great idea and awesome thread concept. Also nice to see one of my guys snuck in there from the SHL.  I know Anders was trying to figure out what playoffs looked like in the future, this may be a good solution for those not participating in the playoffs...I like electing a limited amount of players to go play for an alternate All Star team of sorts. This wouldn't give managers a ton of interaction as they wouldn't be managing it but it would be something to monitor and would be better than nothing. It would be fun to have its own interactive message area where managers can also comment and remark. Great ideas everyone!

I wouldn't be surprised if National Teams are on Anders' to-do list.  Probably not for a while, but maybe on the back burner.

I've brought this topic up before, and maybe I can add to it in this thread.

Based on Paul's 16 teams, its possible that national teams will only consider managers from teams equal or greater than their prestige.

For example, Canada and the United States would be both extremely highly reputable teams, and your team rep would need to be at least honoured in GHL to be considered, and I guess you'd have to be considered World Class yourself.

Moving down to Russia and Sweden, they both would only consider GHL managers with teams reputed in the green, and you would have to be at least successful.

Then to Finland and Czechia, any GHL manager would suffice, but must be minimum successful.

And Slovakia and Switzerland would consider any successful manager in the GHL or SHL.

Once you get to worse teams such as Italy, Austria, or Denmark, they would consider almost any manager.

The only issues I see now with the proposed national teams is how long managers are able to stay on the teams (in order to give others a chance to manage). Maybe one or two World Tournaments? As well as how the national teams would choose a manager. Maybe you would have a window, such as silly season, and you can apply to national teams that you are eligible to manage, and at the end of silly season, the national team chooses a manager (probably with the highest reputation in terms of themselves, and team they manage currently). Another issue is games between national teams. How often would they play, before the "World Tournament"? It would have to not get national managers bored, but at the same time be a realistic amount. What you could have is something like the IIHF World Championships, where they play some sort of round robin, and then there is a knockout round. Instead of relegation, the last two finishers make the knockout stage (cause there would be 16 teams?). Instead of 7 games, they could maybe play 30 "season" games.

I think a competition like this would be awesome, but my guess is Anders will need to get better servers in order to support even more games.

IneffableLeafs: I'm not sure manager's reputation should be the only decision for NT manager (as the top reputated managers could manage any NT forever). I would simply introduce user elections. You have now 77 managers in Biscuit right now. Let's say there will be rule you have to play at least 2-3 months to be eligible for NT manager, so we are 60-70 managers. If you really have 16 NTs (to me it is too many for such a small world), you have ~4 managers eligible per team. I guess not all would be interested, so there would be NTs usually with 1-4 managers interested in. For this, you can make a simply voting - each 77 managers can vote for all NTs in form of a poll. This can repeat each season (maybe better each 2 seasons).

IIHF World Championships format sounds fine. But 30 seasons games is a bit too many. Note that this should be played during playoffs or silly-/pre-season, not during regular season (and If, I would rather see 1 game per week, so not too many). This also depends on format - if you get experience, injuries from NT or not. In that case it is not so many more games and the server should take it easily - among 16 NTs, you play 8 games. If this is outside regular season (when 40 games are played each day), it should be just fine and even during regular season, 40/48 is not so big difference.

How I would see the national games being using a tournament style during playoffs / off season. The players would play in their respectable teams roster, but that wouldn't affect the player at all, no experience and no injuries. The games could be simultaneous during the real playoff games so you would have some players playing 2 games at once. This would take away from the realism part, but at least that way we could have the top players in each country's team (I for one at least would not give any of my players away for a national team to play them even if they had 1% chance to get injured or would miss real world games).

I understand your point, jusatin. I also thought about the NTs being completely independent with no effect on player and that might be easier to implement. On the other hand the NT games might be played only in silly/pre-season, where no team games are played and thus the player will not miss any time in your team and experience/confidence boost might over-weight the injury chance.

This is an awesome thread. I reckon having the world championships start at the same time as playoffs would be good. Currently there are teams that sit for over a week (slow worlds 3 weeks) with nothing to do. If the WC started on the same day as playoffs you would have your team built primary of players from teams that didn't make the playoffs, like in real life with the NHL playoffs and IIHF world championships and then as players get eliminated they could go join the national team to play out the rest of the tournament.
