Cubs send:

OF Jay Bruce (MLB, cleared waivers)

C Scott Smith (AA-Tennessee)

RP Jose V. Kline (A-South Bend)

OF Will Ward (Rookie-Mesa)

SP Melvin Ward (Rookie-Mesa)

Rays send:

OF Jose Pena (MLB, claimed by Cubs)

Jay Bruce was one of our most important contributors this year, both offensively (132 OPS+) and defensively (1.042 EFF). His concussion the day after the trade deadline was fairly devastating. We've played well since then, going 8-2 in our last ten to crawl within 1 game of the Wild Card, but we really wanted to replace Bruce. Jose Pena is just about the closest thing in the league. He's a great defender, he's got more power with a bit less average, and a great clubhouse presence for our final 50-ish games. We give up a solid prospect package in return, as well as Bruce to help even out the money, but the Cubs felt this deal was necessary.

Thanks John, Rays to confirm.

GO CUBS GO ... to the playoffs!

Rays confirm. Honestly, we dealt for Pena likely as a bit of an over-reaction to Moncrief getting hurt. While we love what Pena has done in his short stay here, this return on our investment is too great to pass up. The AL East is a dogfight, and we can't afford to extend Pena, so not taking this for a 25% shot at the playoffs which is then a 12.5% shot at a title, would've been a mistake.
