Season 2, Games 5 through 8

Game #5, Akron: Another defensive gem. We take a 30-21 halftime lead and then leave Duquesne in the dust, winning 61-39Rob Ferguson stars with 18 points and 10 boards. Joey Brown picks up 13 points, Antonio Greer scores 11, and Dalron Jones finishes with 9. (5-0)

Game #6, UTEP: Our offense takes over in this game as we spurt out to a 43-25 halftime advantage. The 2nd half is nearly a repeat of the first and we come away with an 87-50 victoryDalron Jones scores 20 while adding 7 rebounds and 5 assists, Joey Brown gets another double-double (11 points and 11 rebounds), Rob Ferguson scores 14, and Antonio Greer adds 9. (6-0, Ranked #1, RPI: 1)

AwardDalron Jones is the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

Game #7, Southern Illinois: We hit shots from all over the floor in the 1st half and built a 53-30 halftime lead. The team kept the Salukis from making any serious runs in the 2nd half and went on to win 90-71Joey Brown dropped in 21 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Dalron Jones scored 19, Valder Greene came in off the bench to score 14, Johnnie Campbell put in 12 points, and Rob Ferguson added 10. (7-0)

Game #8 @ North Carolina St.: This was a close game almost the entire 40 minutes. At the half, we led 33-29, and could not pull away in the 2nd half. We pulled out a narrow victory, 66-62. Dalron Jones took high-point honors with 21 points, but Joey Brown had another awesome game with 15 points and 15 rebounds. (8-0, Ranked 2nd, RPI: 2)

AwardJoey Brown again won both the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week and Freshman Player of the Week awards.

Great Story!
I read a lot of the Dynasty stories and enjoy them all, but I check for updates to this one as soon as I get here. Can't wait to see how Coach Bradbury and his Tigers progress. Looking forward to the next chapter!   [Copied from post by CoachVN in Wolverines Studios forums]

Thanks, CoachVN! I too wonder how long he will get away with his corrupt ways.

Season 2, Game 9 thru 12

Game #9, #8-ranked North Carolina: North Carolina sported a small lead early in the game, but by the half we were ahead 41-31. We then pulled away in the 2nd half to win easily 81-60Dalron Jones dropped in 25 points plus grabbed 9 rebounds and Rob Ferguson added 10 points. (9-0, Ranked 3rd, RPI: 3)

Game #10, Tennessee: Remembering how the Vols stomped us last year, our guys wanted revenge. We did a great job of doing exactly that in the 1st half and pulled away to a 45-24 halftime advantage. Our defense was porous in the 2nd half, but we continued to score well and put together an 87-65 victoryDalron Jones achieved a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Rob Ferguson scored 17, and Antonio Greer and Johnnie Campbell both scored 16 points. (10-0, Ranked #3, RPI: 2)

AwardDalron Jones was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

Game #11 @ St. Bonaventure: St. Bonaventure controlled the tempo in the 1st half, built as much as an 11 point lead. We finished the half trailing 37-30. Even though we weren’t hitting our shots and were taking too many bad shots, our defense bailed us out in the 2nd half, as we leap-frogged by the Bonnies and won 68-60. Dalron Jones scored 15 but the game MVP went to Rob Ferguson with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Valder Greene also scored 14 and Antonio Greer added 10 points. (11-0, Ranked 4th, RPI: 2)

Ineligibility: SF Bradley Ides, a sophomore SF walkon, finished the term with a 1.9 GPA. My reaction was that I wanted to cut him, but my assistants convinced me to keep with since he’s been practicing our sets for 18 months. We got him a tutor.

Game #12, Tulane: We came out flat and could only manage a 33-33 tie at the end of the first half. We led most of the 2nd half, but could never put the game out of reach, finishing with a 73-63 victory in our first conference game of the season. Dalron Jones had 22 points and 8 assists and Joey Brown and Rob Ferguson both had double-doubles, 13 points and 10 rebounds for Brown and 14 points and 10 rebounds for Ferguson. (12-0, 1-0, 1st place tie)

Season 2, Games 13 thru 16

Game #13 @ Houston: We played heads up ball in the 1st half and rolled to a 45-24 lead at the half. Houston closed on us in the 2nd half, but we held them off for a 67-56 victory. Joey Brown carried us with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Our starting guards, Antonio Greer and Dalron Jones scored 13 and 11 points, respectively. (13-0, 2-0, 1st place tie, Ranked #3, RPI: 2)

Awards: Joey Brown once again both the conference Player of the Week and the Freshman Player of the Week awards.

Game #14 @ Connecticut: In the early stages of the first half, we played well and held a small lead but by the midpoint of the half, Connecticut turned things around and by the end of the half led 42-33. With the refs called things tight on us, our players simply lost their aggressiveness. I was all over the refs. The zebras definitely noticed, because they came out with a vengeance in the 2nd half, whistling our players for just looking at their opponents. Connecticut took full advantage of this and opened a 25 point lead. In the latter stages we tried to make a comeback, but the difference was just too great. We dropped our first game of the year by a score of 76-61. Shooting, turnovers, and rebounds were very equal between the two teams. What wasn’t equal? We were called for 10 more fouls. Dalron Jones played only 18 minutes and scored just 8 points because of continual foul problems. The Huskies got to the foul line 20 more times than we did! And they scored 16 more points on free throws...more than the final difference in the score. In other words, we were jobbed! Rob Ferguson scored 14 points and pulled down 7 rebounds and Joey Brown scored 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. (13-1, 2-1, 2nd place tie)

Game #15, Cincinnati: The Bearcats entered the game in 1st place in the American Athletic Conference. We came out playing a withering defense that immobilized Cincinnati in the first half and led us to a 40-25 lead at the half. The Bearcats came out in the 2nd half hitting their shots and trimmed our lead a little but we never let them get close enough to put a real scare into us. We came away with a 74-65 victory that got us back into a tie for the top spot in the conference. Antonio Greer led our scoring with 19 points, but Rob Ferguson scored13 points and had 12 rebounds while Joey Brown knocked down 10 points and hauled in 11 rebounds while getting 3 steals and blocking 2 shots. Dalron Jones scored just 10 points but had 6 assists and 6 rebounds plus 2 steals and 2 blocks. (14-1, 3-1, 1st place tie, Ranked #3, RPI: 2)

AwardJoey Brown again won the Freshman Player of the Week Award for the American Athletic Conference.

Stats thus far for our 3 main players: SG Dalron Jones (18.0 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.6 spg, 0.5 bpg); C Joey Brown (12.5 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 2.0 apg, 2.1 spg, 0.9 bpg), and PF Rob Ferguson (12.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 1.1 apg, 2.0 spg, 1.3 bpg).

Game #16 @ Central Florida: Good defense crushed Central Florida in the first half allowing us to achieve a 39-21 half time lead. We put it on cruise control in the 2nd half. Central Florida scored well, particularly PG David Holman who finished with 26 points, but we never let them get close. We won 79-68. Rob Ferguson led us with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Dalron Jones put 14 points on the board, Joey Brown had 13 points, and Johnnie Campbell added 12. (15-1, 4-1, 1st place tie)

Season 2, Games 17 thru 20

Game #17, SMU: SMU came in with a 9-6 record, but we destroyed them. We shot extremely well in the first half which drove us to a 48-34 halftime lead. Then we clamped down defensively, allowing the Mustangs to score just 16 points in the 2nd half and won handily 79-50Antonio Greer scored 17 and dished out 6 assists. Joey Brown also scored 17 plus he had 7 rebounds. Dalron Jones picked up 11 points, and Howie Tyler came off the bench to score 14. (16-1, 5-1, 1st place, Ranked #2, RPI: 3)

Game #18 @ Temple: The first half is a battle. We outshoot Temple but they out-rebound us and get to the free throw line more. We escape with a 42-38 lead at the break. We come back on the floor in the 2nd half and rapidly expand our lead to as much as 22 points as our shooting remains extremely hot. We finish by hitting 65% of our shots. We won decisively, 88-72Rob Ferguson dropped in 22 points, Dalron Jones tossed in 18, Joey Brown and Antonio Greer both added 12, and Adrian Banes scored 10 points off the bench while playing just 14 minutes. (17-1, 6-1, 1st place)

Game #19, South Florida: The guys came in expecting an easy game. But this turned out to be no walk in the park. The teams slugged it out the entire game. We held a slim 41-37 lead at the half. The game remained tight in the 2nd half. We were generally out-played but South Florida’s 19 turnovers let us squeak by for a 66-63 victory. South Florida’s PG Jon Montgomery burned us for 26 points plus had 7 assists. Dalron Jones regained his shooting form and scored 20 to lead our scoring. Antonio Greer continued to score well, dropping in 17 points. Joey Brown hit for 15 points plus pulled down 7 rebounds. (18-1, 7-1, 1st place, Ranked #3, RPI: 3)

Game #20 @ Tulsa: The lead in the first half see-sawed back and forth. We ended up on the short end of a 34-30 halftime score. Again the refs took us out of this game in the 2nd half and Tulsa continually went to the line to pull steadily away. We took a 78-62 beating. The Golden Hurricanes went to the line 27 more times than us and outscored us by 18 points on free throws. That was more than enough to beat us. Tulsa’s C Derick Paige poured in 26 points. Dalron Jones knocked down 20 points. Rob Ferguson added 18 points while pulling down 8 rebounds. (18-2, 7-2, 1st place tie)

Recruiting: We were on pins and needles throughout this week awaiting the SAT scores for recruit Ruben Rohwer. His 2.1 GPA didn’t bode well for him to get a qualifying score, but we figured out a way to make sure he got some SAT tutoring before the test. We also were closely watching to see how three highly rated high school recruits performed. Two of them also had 2.1 GPA’s and one has a 2.0 GPA, so the SAT was a big hurdle for both. If they get high enough SAT scores, we'll go after them like a cat goes after catnip.

Season 2, Games 21-24:

Game #21 @ Tulane: We gradually pulled away in the first half to take a 32-23 halftime lead. We then opened a 21 point lead in the 2nd half and held on for a 69-53 winDalron Jones hit for 20 points, Johnnie Campbell scored 15, and Joey Brown added 12 points while pulling down 9 boards. Rob Ferguson hauled in 10 rebounds. (19-2, 8-2, 1st place, Ranked #5, RPI: 6) The loss to Tulsa earlier in the week took a big hit on our fortunes with the poll voters and with the RPI computer.

Norton AwardDalron Jones, Joey Brown, and Rob Ferguson all were named quarterfinalists for the Norton Award.

Game #22, Houston: Our play in the first half was awesome. We ran away to a 42-22 halftime advantage. We went into cruise control in the 2nd half, but won 68-47Joey Brown had a big game with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Rob Ferguson wasn’t far behind with 17 points and 9 boards. Dalron Jones added 14 and Antonio Greer scored 11. (20-2, 9-2, 1st place)

InjuryAntonio Greer left the game late with a strained thigh and likely will miss one or two games.

SAT resultsRuben Rohwer’s SAT score was 890...just enough to be above our 880 minimum. Phew! The news for 3 recruits we liked who were ranked #12, 18 and 26 wasn’t as good. None of the 3 were even close to scoring an 880. Ugh! That’s a big disappointment to our recruiting fortunes. The loss of these 3 studs alters our recruiting strategy since there are no longer extremely strong high school seniors left to recruit meaning we may go after a JC player.

Game #23, Connecticut: We again put together a big first half and finished the half with a 42-22 lead that was identical to our previous game. Although we eased up in the 2nd half, there never was any doubt and we won 78-66 to avenge our earlier loss to the Huskies. Valder Greene started at PG and played adequately but continued his penchant for getting into foul trouble and eventually fouled out. Dalron Jones lead our scoring with 20 points and had 8 rebounds, Joey Brown put 18 points on the board plus grabbed 13 rebounds, Rob Ferguson also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Howie Tyler came off the bench to score 12 points. (21-2, 10-2, 1st place, Ranked #4, RPI: 4)

AwardJoey Brown was chosen as the American Athletic Conference’s Player of the Week and Freshman Player of the Week.

Game #24 @ Cincinnati: I told the guys it was time to come up big against a good team on the road. The first half was a dog-fight with Cincinnati coming away with a 40-35 lead at the break. I jumped all over the players during the half about playing defense. They responded by shutting down the Bearcats in the 2nd half. We retook the lead and gradually opened an 11 point lead. Cincinnati hit some late shots but we won 70-63 by allowing the Bearcats to score just 23 points in the 2nd half. While we couldn’t control SG Rodney Walton who finished with 24 points, no other Cincinnati players scored in double figures. Dalron Jones popped in 20 points, Rob Ferguson had 16 points, and Antonio Greer came back of the injured list to add 11 points. Joey Brown was surprisingly held scoreless but pulled down 12 rebounds. Valder Green scored 9 points in 10 minutes of play but also picked up 5 fouls during the short time. (22-2, 11-2, 1st place)

Season 2, Games 25 thru 28

Game #25, Central Florida: We blistered the nets in this game. By the end of the first half we were ahead 58-40. We finished our offensive onslaught by hitting 62% of our FG attempts, 60% of our 3 pointers, and 90% of our FT’s. We buried the Knights 98-71Dalron Jones dropped in 25 points, Antonio Greer added 15, Rob Ferguson scored 12, and Johnnie Campbell and Valder Greene both scored 11. (23-2, 12-2, 1st place, Ranked #4, RPI: 4)

Norton AwardDalron Jones and Joey Brown were both named semifinalists for the Norton Award.

Game #26 @ SMU: We came out flat and stayed flat. We trailed 34-19 at the half and while we cut into their lead in the 2nd half, we could never really get it together. The result was an embarrassing 55-46 loss. We hit just 31% of our shots, but surprisingly the Mustangs only hit 30% of theirs. But they controlled the boards and again we were beat at the free throw line where we got to the line 16 fewer times and scored 11 fewer points than SMU. Our only player to score in double figures was Joey Brown with 13 points. (23-3, 12-3, 1st place)

Game #27, Temple: Temple out-played us in the first half and sported a 40-36 halftime lead. But in the 2nd half we combined a potent offense with a solid defense and ran away from Temple for an 87-64 shellacking. We outshot the Owls 51% to 39%. Dalron Jones put on a 30 point offensive show and also dished out 7 assists and pulled down 6 rebounds. Valder Greene came off the bench for his best game of the season with 19 points (hitting 100% of his shots including 5 from 3 point land). Rob Ferguson scored 14 and Joey Brown added 12. (24-3, 13-3, 1st place, Ranked #4, RPI: 4)

Game #28 @ South Florida: In this game we played solidly throughout both halves. While not impressive offensively and while allowing the Bulls to hit too high a percentage of their shots, we recorded a fantastic 18-5 turnover advantage. The result was that we led 34-28 at the half and expanded that lead in the 2nd half to as much as 20 points while finishing with an80-68 winJoey Brown had a big game scoring 19 and pulling down 12 boards. Dalron Jones also popped in 19 points along with recording 6 assists. Antonio Greer scored 17 and Rob Ferguson had 14 points and 8 rebounds. (25-3, 14-3, 1st place)

Season 2, Game 29 and end of regular season

Game #29, Tulsa: Tulsa played tough in the first half and came away with a 39-38 halftime lead. But we tightened our defense in the 2nd half and pulled away to win big, 78-60 in the final game of the regular season. Rob Ferguson came up with a big game in his final game at home as a senior, scoring 22 and hauling down 9 boards. Antonio Greer scored 13 and Dalron Jones, Johnnie Campbell, and Valder Greene each chipped in 10 points. (26-3, 15-3, 1st place, Ranked #4, RPI: 4)

xt7673nui0j2b2t6g.jpg

Players declaring for the draft: Two of our players declare for the pro draft: Antonio Greer and Valder Greene. Greer is a SG who has been starting at PG and Greene is a true PG who was his primary backup. To complicate matters, our SG Dalron Jones is graduating. While we have a couple other good PG’s who could develop into strong players next year, we still are going to be short of guards. So our spring recruiting strategy has changed. We need to come up with a SG who can step right in and contribute.

#10 seed Connecticut vs #7 seed Tennessee: Connecticut loses 65-63

#10 seed Cincinnati vs #7 seed North Carolina St.: Cincinnati loses 75-52

Game #33, #15 seed Central Arkansas: The game went back and forth early in the 1st half and we trailed by as much as 7 points, but by the end of the half we had taken a 45-38 lead. Then we caught fire in the 2nd half and built a 22 point lead before finishing with an 85-70 victory. We won by dominating the boards 32-21 and having a 19-12 turnover advantage. Antonio Greer starred with 28 points. Dalron Jones scored 13 points. Rob Ferguson had 12 points and 9 rebounds. Joey Brown scored 10, pulled down 12 rebounds, had 4 assists, 5 steals, and 3 blocks. Terry Jones came off the bench to add 10 points.

Round 2:

Game #34, #10 seed North Carolina: The first half was exciting as the lead continually flip-flopped. When the buzzer sounded we had a slim 31-29 lead. We soared early in the 2nd half and opened a 22 point lead before North Carolina made a run that cut our final winning margin to 76-62. Again, turnovers were the difference, as we made just 8 turnovers while North Carolina turned the ball over 20 times. Dalron Jones led our scoring with 21 points. Antonio Greer and Valder Greene both scored 14 points. Rob Ferguson added 12.

Round 3 (Sweet 16):

Game #35, #3 seed Ohio State: We jumped out on top and never relinquished the lead. By the half we were on top 38-26, as our defense sparkled. We continued our dominance in the 2nd half and won going away 71-48. We only allowed the Buckeyes to connect on 27% of their shots and didn’t allow any of their players to score in double figures. Joey Brown had a big game, scoring 22 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. Rob Ferguson scored 11 and Dalron Jones and Antonio Greer both added 10 points.

Round 4 (Elite 8):

Game #36, #1 seed Arkansas: Neither team could pull ahead in the first half. We trailed 31-30 at the break. But Arkansas came out scoring in the 2nd half and we gradually faded, losing to the tune of 78-64. Arkansas’ SF Andrae Thomas dumped in 26 points. Antonio Greer was our top scorer with 18 points. Joey Brown scored 13 and Dalron Jones hit for 10 points.

Spring Recruiting

We decided to pursue an international player from Turkey, PF Ufuk Oztorun (his parents gave him the first name, I didn’t). I made a quick visit after our exit from the NCAA Tourney which went well but only moved us up to #5 on his top 10 school list. I made him a $5000 offer to hang with a school celeb. He liked it and said it would factor into his decision. We moved up to #4 on his favorites list.

I also visited SG Lamont Holiday, a JC SG. While the visit resulted in us moving to the top of his favorite’s list, I decided to try to nail it down and offered him a $5000 bribe, He was uncomfortable with it and refused it.

The 3rd player I visited was C Adam Wallace, a high school senior from Wisconsin. Even though the visit went well we still weren’t in his top 10. My $5000 offer sounded good to him and he said it would factor into his decision.

Although I didn’t visit SG David Wrenn, a high school senior from North Carolina, I also offered him $5000. He also was tempted by it and said it would factor into his decision.

On April 2nd, we offered the final two scholarships to SG Lamont Holiday and PF Ufuk Oztorun.

I re-visited Ufuk Oztorun, SG Lamont Holiday and SG David Wrenn. I also visited SG Tim Vershaw from Alabama.

On April 16th both players we had offered scholarships to signed LOI’s to attend Memphis next year.

Recruits we landed this season:

PF Ruben Rohwer, 6-7 HS Sr, Cincinnati, OH. 2.1 GPA (890 SAT). 26.3 ppg, 4.6 apg, 16.1 rpg, 5.3 spg, 5.9 bpg. This guy is simply outstanding. Great shooter (inside and outside, scorer, rebounder, defender, passer, shot blocker, ball stealer. He has a tremendous work ethic and doesn’t have many problems with injuries and doesn’t cause problems. Rated as the #2 recruit in the nation. Overall rating: A.

SG Lamont Holiday, 6-1 JC So, Elmwood Park, NJ. 2.6 GPA. 18.9 ppg, 4.0 apg, 7.3 rpg, 2.6 spg, 2.6 bpg. Very good outside shooter and scorer. Very good ball handler. Great leader on and off the court. A hard worker who doesn’t have many problems with injuries. Ranked as the #58 recruit in the nation. Overall rating: B.

Season 3

Meeting with the AD

My meeting with Steve Forester went well. I met all his goals for this year. He and the administration are pleased that we made it to the Elite 8 this year. His goals for next year are substantially higher though: Win 20+ games, Win the Conference Tournament, Maintain School Prestige, Sign a 4-star recruit, and Reach NCAA Final 4.

I ask for a facilities upgrade but the request is denied.

Players Declaring for the Pro Draft

Losing players to the pros is to be expected, but losing our two starting guards (Valder Green and Antonio Greer) was a difficult pill to swallow. I’m happy that C Joey Brown didn’t go to the pros. Fortunately we landed 3 very good recruits, including the phenomenal Ruben Rohwer who together with Joey Brown will form a dominating interior for us this coming season.

Summer and Autumn Recruiting

We landed the 10th best recruiting class last year. Those schools ahead of us were Kentucky, North Carolina, Louisville, Michigan State, Oregon, Kansas, Virginia, Duke, and UCLA. We'd like to do even better this year.

We will have 6 scholarships to fill unless we pick up a transfer player. We order the basic editions of the Southeast and the National Reports. We also make plans to attend the Indy Elite Camp and the Memphis Hoop Summit.
Looking over the list of transfers, we decide to pass since we feel there’s a good chance of picking up better players and would prefer to get players we are likely to have for 4 years.

I’m excited by the number of high-ranking recruits who become interested in Memphis. Now if we can just land some of them. Again we will employ whatever methods needed and do whatever it takes to get them to commit to us, but first we need to try to determine which of them may be most likely to be influenced by our inducements. We focus on family finances. But then factoring in who is most likely to be willing to take what we offer and who will be turned off by what we offer becomes pretty much a guessing game. Determining integrity (and the lack of it) is elusive. This year many of the top-ranked recruits come from families who are well off so we may have to gain their interest in more traditional ways and save our “offers” for some a bit lower in the rankings.

Towards the end of August, we decide to try to solidify interest with some key recruits by hopefully making them an offer they could not resist (number in parentheses is that player's national ranking and number of +'s indicates level of interest in our program):

PG Joel English (#5)—family lower middle class—$10K cash offered but he's not interested, +++ dropped to ++ (he eventually signed with Mich St)

SF Greg Brooks (#8)—family lower middle class—$10K cash offered, he found it tempting offer and indicated it will factor into his decision—he was already +++ but we're not in his top 10 and still are not after the offer.

SG Michael Walcutt (#3)—family upper middle class—$10K cash offered, he also found it to be a tempting offer and said it will factor into his decision—already +++ but we weren't in his top 10 but became 8th on his top 10 list after the offer (he eventually signed with Mich St)

C Ryan Welch (#4)—family middle class—$10K cashoffered, he was not interested, +++ dropped to ++ (he eventually signed with Stanford)

SG A.J. Hahn (#12)—family poor--—$10K cash offered, he said it was a tempting offer and that it will factor into his decision— we went from ++ to +++ after the offer, but not still were not in his top 10 (he eventually signed with Syracuse)

PF Scotty Jackson (#2)—family upper middle class--$10K cash, he said it was a tempting offer and that it will factor into his decision—we were already + but we moved up to ++ after the offer, but still were not in his top 10 (he eventually signed with Mich St)

Our scholarship offers on 9/5:

SG Walcutt, #3—we were 8th on his top 10 list at that point (he signed with Mich St)
PG Mckie, #6—we were 3rd on his top 10 list at that point (he signed with Kentucky—but we had moved up to 2nd on his top 10—damn!--close but no cigar)
PF Jackson, #2, we weren't listed on his top 10 list (he signed with Mich St)
SG Hahn, #12, we weren't listed on his top 10 list (he signed with Syracuse)
SF Brooks, #8, we weren't on his top 10 list—VERBAL to MEMPHIS on 9/11 (hooray)
PG Smiley, #7—we weren't on his top 10 list at that point (he signed with UCLA, but we were 5th on his top 10 when he made his decision)

Bribe offered on 9/18:

PG Brennan Best (#16)—family poor)--$10K cashoffered--he said it was a tempting offer and that it would factor into his decision— ++ went to +++, but we still were not in his top 10 (he eventually signed with Mich St)

Our Scholarship offers on 9/18:

PF Akins (#1), 2.1 GPA)—we were #1 on his top 10 list—VERBAL to MEMPHIS on 10/9
SG Farmer (#21, 2.3 GPA)—we were #1 on his top 10 list—VERBAL to MEMPHIS on 9/18
PF Kirklin (#13)--we were #7 on his top 10 list (he signed with Arkansas)
PG Best (#16)—we weren't on his top 10 list (he signed with Mich St)

Our scholarship offers on 9/25:

PG Jerian Sarchet (#27)—we weren't on his top 10 list (he signed with Duke)
PF Angelo Craft (#34)—we were 2nd on his top 10 list—VERBAL to MEMPHIS on 9/25

10/2 Bribe:

C Larry Ress (#38)--$5K offer to hang with school celebrity, he found it to be a tempting offer and said it will factor into his decision—already +++ but we were not in top 10 and still not after the offer (he eventually signed with Stanford)

Our Scholarship offer on 10/2:

C Ress (#38)—we were not on his top 10 list (he signed with Stanford)

Michigan State and Stanford simply blitzed our recruiting efforts. Therefore we opened our sites to looking at highly rated JC players at this point.

10/9 Bribe:

PG Jared Keady (#48)--$2K for Entertainment System--he found the offer tempting and said it would factor into his decision--we were already +++ but not in his top 10 but moved up to #7 in his top 10 after the offer.

Scholarship offers on 10/9:

SG Hunter (#32)—we were 3rd on his top 10 list—VERBAL to MEMPHIS on 11/20
PG Keady (#48)—we were 7th on his top 10 list—VERBAL to MEMPHIS on 11/6

Summary of Scholarship Acceptances after summer and autumn recruiting:

PG Jared Keady, 6-3 JC So, Orange, VA, 2.5 GPA. 14.3 ppg, 5.1 apg, 4.6 rpg, 3.2 spg, 0.6 bpg. A very good scorer with a very nice outside shot; great passer and ball handler; outstanding defender; good at stealing the ball. Ranked #47, Overall Rating: A. We will be buying him a $2,000 entertainment center after he arrives.

PF Angelo Craft, 6-8 HS Sr, Lebanon, TN, 2.9 GPA. 18.6 ppg, 1.6 apg, 6.6 rpg, 1.5 spg, 2.5 bpg. Great scorer resulting from outstanding inside shooting; strong rebounder and passer; very athletic; could work harder; has had some attitude and discipline problems. Had a decent showing at the Indy Elite Camp and in the Top 5 at the Memphis Hoop Summit. Ranked #38, Overall rating: A.

SG Dennis Farmer, 6-4 HS Sr, Prairie Grove, AR, 2.3 GPA. 21.7 ppg, 2.6 apg, 4.0 rpg, 3.4 spg, 0.7 bpg. Another risky selection due to his 2.3 GPA which calls into question his ability to meet the minimum SAT score. Excellent scorer with very strong inside and outside shots; great defender; sharp passer and a strong ball handler; extremely good athleticism; a hard worker who doesn’t cause problems; doesn’t have problems with injuries. A Top 10 player in the Indy Elite Camp. Ranked #18, Overall rating: A.

PF Kevin Akins, 6-6 HS Sr, St. Johnsbury, VT, 2.1 GPA. 27.8 ppg, 2.9 apg, 21.2 rpg, 7.3 spg, 3.8 bpg. This guy is a beast...just look at this stats! But do you see the risk also? Yes, he’s sporting a 2.1 GPA, so he’s likely not to make the minimum SAT score...but it was a risk worth taking. Outstanding inside shot and excellent outside shot which creates phenomenal scoring; he absolutely OWNS the boards; a shut-down defender with a nose for the ball with hands that make him an A+ shot blocker and ball stealer; offensively a great passer; a hard worker who doesn’t cause problems. Was in Top 5 at the Indy Elite Camp. Ranked #1, Overall rating: A.

SF Greg Brooks, 6-7 HS Sr, Tenafly, NJ, 3.1 GPA. 27.6 ppg, 2.8 apg, 9.0 rpg, 5.3 spg, 1.2 bpg. The top SF in the recruit pool. An outstanding scorer with a sweet outside shot and strong shooter inside as well; Excellent defender and rebounder; great at stealing the ball and a very strong shot blocker also; excellent passer; a hard worker. Was in the top 25 at the Indy Elite Camp. Ranked #8, Overall rating: A. We need to funnel $10,000 his way when he gets here.

SG Austin Hunter, 6-1 JC So, Harvey, ND, 2.5 GPA. 17.6 ppg, 5.1 apg, 8.1 rpg, 2.3 spg, 1.7 bpg. A big scorer who is a very good outside shooter; excellent passer and very good ball handling skills; excellent rebounder; strong defender; a hard worker who doesn’t have many problems with injuries. Yes, each time we lost another recruit to the Spartans, I got more upset. If the Spartans as much as looked in the direction of someone, that player swooned. mad.gif But this just shows that Memphis isn't ready to compete with the "big boys" for the very top talent (yet). Lassoing the #8 was good though (and we need a very good SF). Our getting the #1 player was only because the "big boys" didn't want to risk going after a guy with a 2.1 GPA (plus they have higher minimum SAT requirements anyway). We lucked out last season by getting a highly ranked recruit with a low GPA to meet minimum SAT numbers for us, but doing it two years in a row might be asking too much. This #1 is SO good though that it was worth taking a flyer on him. Now we all just have to wait until Jan. 28 to see what happens.

Season 3, Game 17 thru 20

PROBATION:

Another team was placed on probation this year for recruiting violations: Auburn was restricted from offering scholarships for 1 year. So they join Georgia Tech (from last season) as the only teams presently on probation.

Game #17 @ SMU: The game was close during the first part of the 1st half, but we then pulled away and built a 41-28 lead at the end of the half. But SMU made things interesting in the 2nd half, narrowing our lead. We finished the game with a 68-59 win. SG Lamont Holiday scored 15, PF Ruben Rohwer dropped in 14, and PG Howie Tyler scored 11. C Joey Brown was held to 8 points but had 10 rebounds. (16-1, 8-0, 1st place, Ranked #2, RPI: 4) (Oregon has a spotless 21-0 season record and 7-0 record in the Pac-12 and is therefore ranked above us.)

Game #18, Tulsa: We steadily pulled away from Tulsa in the first half, finishing it with a 41-29 advantage. The second half was pretty much a repeat of the first half and we cruised to a77-58 winPF Ruben Rohwer led our scoring with 21 points. C Joey Brown had 19 points while playing just 23 minutes. His replacement, Karin Towns scored 11. Cincinnati beat Connecticut so both are 7-2 in the conference and tied for 2nd place behind us. (17-1, 9-0, 1st place, Ranked #2 in the polls, RPI: 3)

Awards: PF Ruben Rohwer was selected as the American Athletic Conference’s Player of the Week and Freshman Player of the Week.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly:

The Good: C Joey Brown was named a Quarterfinalist for the Norton Award.

The Bad: PF’s Terry Jones and Adrian Bains, who were solid subs for us last season, have nearly disappeared this season. This is probably due to the arrival and emergence of future star Ruben Rohwer. Jones has played in just 13 games, averaging 5.5 mpg and a paltry 0.7 ppg while Bains has played in only 5 games with 1.8 mpg on the floor and a 0.2 ppg average. Both are hitting just 33% of their field goal attempts. Jones will be graduating this year, but Bains is just a sophomore and has a lot of talent. Hopefully he will apply himself and make some serious strides forward next season.

The Ugly: We get word that SG Dennis Farmer (the 18th best recruit in the nation this year and who was in the Top 10 at the Indy Elite Camp) and C Kevin Akins (who was the #1 ranked recruit nationally and who was in the Top 5 at the Indy Elite Camp) both failed to meet our rather low SAT requirements and therefore can not play for us next year. The AD’s administrative assistant said she could hear my and my staffs’ wailing and blasphemous lamentations at her desk in the next building. That means we have 2 scholarships to fill this spring from the remaining talent in the recruit pool. We knew we were taking a risk on both players so, while it doesn’t come as a surprise, is a devastating to our plans to significantly improve our team next year. Akins got an 850 on his SAT and Farmer got an 840 so there are some teams (most notably several in the MEAC) that have 840 or lower SAT minimums) where they can play next year, if they so desires and then declare for the pro draft. If it were prior to 2006, Akins could be going pro after he graduates from high school since he’s that good. (FYI: I noted where one guy got a 620 on his SAT, missing even how to spell his name correctly...he’s the 77th ranked recruit in the nation and as a PG can handle the ball but obviously can’t handle much else.)

We’ve been continuing to communicate with recruits, but I now need to get 1st Assistant Coach Ray Schau to focus on the players we will try to get to replace Akins and Farmer. There are some very good JC players, but I think we will try to get two high school seniors even though their skill levels will not be so well developed.

Game #19, Tulane: The first half was close most of the way as Tulane fought us tooth and nail. We escaped with a 35-29 halftime lead. At one point in the 2nd half we opened a 15 point lead, but Green Wave rolled back in and made a game of it. We finished on top 71-61. Lamont Holiday scored 18 points. But the player of the game for us was PF Ruben Rohwer who dumped in 16 points and hauled down 12 rebounds. C Joey Brown contributed 15 points. Tulane’s C Frank Rivera scored 16 and grabbed 9 rebounds. (18-1, 10-0, 1st place)

Game #20 @ Temple: I told the boys this could be a tough game. Did they listen? Noooo! We actually played pretty well in the first half and came out on top 36-27. But then in the 2nd half we folded like a cheap suit. Our defense was non-existent, allowing the Owls to score 47 points in the half and not only overtake us, but give us a sound beating, 74-69C Joey Brown came to play, scoring 27 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. PF Ruben Rohwer also had a pretty good game with 13 points and 8 boards. Trey Frazier came off the bench and tried to save us, scoring 10 points and pulling down 6 rebounds. But the rest of the team stank up the gym. Our 3 remaining starters (SG Holiday, PG Tyler and SF Campbell) stood around and took just 11 shots combined and scored a combined total of 13 points. Meanwhile we let Temple’s PG Boyd Goode drop in 19 points. We simply tanked in this game. (18-2, 10-1, 1st place)
