Career Game #30

2001 MEAC Tournament Finals

Mar 4 2001: (2) Delaware St (21-8, 11-5) vs (8) Belmont (15-15, 8-8)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, lots of freedom, motion
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Fr SF Jaquay Young 12.2. ppg, 5.5 rpg
  • Notes: BEL gave us a good beating in our only meeting this season, scoring 88 pts.  BEL has scored 80+ pts 5 times already this season, so more than ever, we need to bring our best defensive effort

1st Half

We came up with a good start, and C Brandon Braun on attack mode, forcing BEL to give up 17 fouls.  We led by as many as 17, but BEL had a good finish, and showing they have the capability to turn this game around in the 2nd half

Halftime: Up 44-34

Key stat(s)

  • FT: DELST 16-24, BEL 8-10
  • 3PT: DELST 6-14, BEL 0-2

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 17 pts, 8 rebs, 9-14 FT

2nd Half

We went exclusively zone in the 2nd half, knowing that BEL is not comfortable taking outside shots.  BEL made just 1 of their 1st 10 attempts from deep, before making 4 during garbage time when the game was already long decided.  We led by as many as 27.  C Brandon Braun, who scored only a combined 27 pts during the 1st 2 games of the tournament, has surpassed that total in this game.  SG Kevin Stokes also had a sensational 2nd half.  Overall, this was probably the finest game we played all season, saving the best when it mattered most.

2001 MEAC Tournament Champs.  We're going to the Big Dance!

Career Game #31

2001 NCAA Tournament 2nd Round (64)

Mar 16 2001: (13) Delaware St (22-8, 11-5) vs (4) #11 Memphis (25-7, 18-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, lots of freedom, shuffle
  • Defense: m2m, press a lot
  • Key Players: Jr C Kyle Granville 10.7 ppg, 9.0 rpg
  • Notes: MEM had a 21 game win streak before losing in the CUSA tournament finals

1st Half

Judging from MEM's 64% FG performance alone, one would think this is already a blow out.  But C Brandon Braun has other things in mind.  Playing in front of a national audience, Braun put up 33 pts and grabbed 6 offensive rebounds.  If we can just put up a sequence of defensive stops in the 2nd half, and continue to go to Braun offense, we might have a chance to pull this off

Halftime: Down 43-45

Key stat(s)

  • FG: DELST 40%, MEM 64%
  • Off Rebounds: DELST 10, MEM 3

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 33 pts, 8 rebs

2nd Half

Defense has been the priority of both teams in the 2nd half.  C Brandon Braun getting limited touches.

11:28: Down 52-54

We got into the penalty; PG Sidney Petteway and SG Lewis Lepore both with 4 fouls.  I gave C Brandon Braun just 1 min of rest here in the 2nd half

7:35, Down 62-63

We tied the game twice, but MEM scores each time.  After knotting the score again, we made a stop.  We went back to C Brandon Braun, he delivers once more, and we take the upper hand!  Braun with 47 pts

5:13, Up 69-67

Lead was exchanged twice.  Teams also traded turn overs.  Its going down the wire here

3:52, Up 71-69

MEM with possession.  They missed a shot; we grabbed the rebound.  We cant get it to C Brandon Braun.  C Jamal Swift takes it inside; blocked.  MEM recovers the ball.  MEM missing again.  Timeout

2:48, Up 71-69

Pass intended to C Brandon Braun was stolen, and MEM scores on the break.  Tied game.  C Jamal Swift missed.  We got called for a foul.  SG Lewis Lepore fouls out.  MEM makes both FTs.  Timeout

2:15, Down 71-73

I keep on encouraging the team.  Lots of time left.  SF Anthony Jefferson drives.  Miss.  MEM with the rebound.  We're scoreless in the last 3 minutes.  MEM missed on their next possession.  Another chance here.  But we turned the ball over.  Foul; PG Sidney Petteway fouls out.  MEM splits.  Timeout

1:21, Down 71-74

SG Kevin Stokes shot was blocked!  MEM with 9 blks in the game.  MEM with the ball.  MEM scores a jumper.  Timeout

0:40, Down 71-76

We would need a 3.  PG Brandon Perry missed a 3.  We gave up a foul.  MEM makes both FTs and were down 3 possessions.  We missed another 3.  Season over.  We were held scoreless in the last 4+ mins.  It was still a gallant effort.  Outstanding freshman season for C Brandon Braun.  Looking forward to his improvements in the off season, plus with a deeper team, we'll make some noise again next year

Final Score: Delaware St - 71, Memphis - 81

Post game observations

  • (-): We need to add at least 2 more players to our rotation; we didn't had enough gas left in the end game

Career Game #32

Nov 13, 2001: Longwood (0-0) @ Delaware St (0-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: slow pace, balanced, some freedom, flex
  • Defense: m2m, press at points
  • Key Players: SF Steve Brown
  • Notes: LONG with only 7 scholarship players

1st Half

LONG having turn over problems, plus we're gobbling up offensive rebounds, resulting to a huge possession advantage.  We have a much deeper lineup now as compared to last year, so I have the luxury of fielding in fresh legs without much drop in quality

Halftime: Up 35-13

Key stat(s)

  • Turn overs: DELST 3, LONG 12
  • 3PT: DELST 3-8, LONG 0-11

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 10 pts, 4 rebs

2nd Half

Our shooting is rusty, but we still get a comfortable win because of our defense.  Our lone freshman, PG Anthony Turner, had a solid debut

Final Score: Longwood - 56, Delaware St - 71

Box Scores

Career Game #33

Nov 16, 2001: Delaware St (1-0) @ UC Davis (0-0)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, some freedom, 5 out
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: So SG Alan Sawyer
  • Notes:

1st Half

UCDAV competitive during the 1st 10 mins hitting their outside shots, but later on succumbed to the depth of our lineup.  A total of 9 players have scored on our side.  We're missing more inside shots that outside, but the number of offensive rebounds we're getting is insane.

Halftime: Up 44-23

Key stat(s)

  • Off Rebounds: DELST 15, UCDAV 2
  • Turn overs: DELST 6, UCDAV 11

Key Players

  • DELST: C Jason Winter 8 pts, 11 rebs

2nd Half

4 turn overs at the start of the 2nd half; took more than 5 mins before we scored our 1st FG.  We're went early in the penalty also.  UCDAV able to trim our lead to 13.  When C Jason Winter got his 4th foul, backup C Jamal Swift stepped in and we didn't lose our rebounding advantage.  Didn't take long for UCDAV to also be in the penalty, and we were able to restore our 20+ lead.  Refs were busy the entire 2nd half, both teams just trading lots of FTs, not enabling UCDAV to make another run.

Final Score: Delaware St - 85, UC Davis - 60

  • Key Players: So C Aubrey Reed 14 ppg, 69% FG
  • Notes: RMU's bench scored 41 pts in their last game

1st Half

4 games into the season, and we're still hoping for our FG shooting to come back to normal.  Even C Brandon Braun, who shot almost 57% FG last season, is 1-9 FG.  We made it up by winning the possession battle

Halftime: Up 31-29

Key stat(s)

  • Off Rebounds: DELST 14, RMU 6
  • FG: DELST 32%, RMU 39%

  • DELST: C Jason Winter 8 pts, 4 rebs
  • RMU: SF Kevin Williams 10 pts, 2 3s

2nd Half

Our offense starting to hit its stride.  Defense has been consistent as well.  SG Lewis Lepore with 12 pts off the bench

11:09, Up 54-43

Our 2nd unit held its own in protecting our lead.  And then we got into penalty.  C Brandon Braun fouled out with mor ethan 6 mins remaining.  RMU starting to claw their way back..  Timeout

3:03, Up 65-60

RMU came up with a stop, and then hit a 3.  Up 2.  We badly need a bucket.  C Jason Winter missed inside.  Winter came up with a steal on the other end, and we score on the break.. Up 4.  RMU hits another 3!  Timeout

1:35, Up 67-66

RMU fouls.  They are in the penalty.  SF Nick Fleming nails both FTs.  Up 3.  RMU missed a 3.  We get the rebound.  Fleming missed his shot.  Timeout RMU

0:43, Up 69-66

We're not giving them a 3.  RMU shoots a jump shot.  Missed, but there was a foul on PG Anthony Turner.  Bad foul; rookie mistake.  RMU splits.  Timeout

0:14, Up 69-67

I put in SG Kevin Stokes for FT shooting purposes.  RMU fouls Stokes.  Stokes hits 2.  Up 4.  That should do it.  We almost dropped a home game.

  • Key Players: Fr SG Cary Gordon 10.3 ppg
  • Notes: COLG shooting just 40.4% FG and 27.3% 3PT

1st Half

Trailed by 10 early partly due to our turn overs.  COLG's 53% FG made it difficult for us to rally quickly, but we did came back because of the efforts our big men.  C Brandon Braun and C Jason Winter combined for 28 pts.  We were leading by 3, until COLG hits a buzzer beating 3.  COLG hit 4 3s in the 1st half

Halftime: Tied at 39

Key stat(s)

  • FG: DELST 47%, COLG 53%
  • Off rebounds: DELST 10, CHIST 5

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 15 pts, 5 rebs

2nd Half

We put down our defensive clamps and start the 2nd half on a 14-2 run.  COLG stayed close.  Crucial turn overs on our part allowed COLG to come even closer.

5:38, Up 64-59

Teams trading turn overs.  Both teams in the penalty.

3:50, Up 67-61

C Jason Winter gets inside and scored.  Up 8.  COLG answers with a 3.  Up 5.  We go back to Winter, and he got fouled.  Winter splits.  We have missed 6 FTs already.  Up 6.  We get a steal and scores on the break.  Up 8.  Another steal, and another easy lay in.  COLG with 22 turn overs.  Up 10.  COLG breaks their silence and scores.  Up 8.  C Brandon Braun wasting no time, takes the ball inside, and gets hacked.  Braun missed both FTs.  But there is another turn over by COLG, #23 on them.  Timeout

1:35, Up 74-66

PG Sidney Petteway gets a screen, got open for a jumper, and Petteway scores.  Up 10.  Another turn over by COLG.  That should do it.  We slowed down the game, and get an important road win.

Career Game #38

Dec 3, 2001: UC Riverside (4-1) @ Delaware St (5-1)

Scouting Report

  • Offense: fast pace, balanced, some freedom, princeton
  • Defense: m2m, rarely press
  • Key Players: Jr SG jackie Washington 17.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg
  • Notes: UCRIV averaging 78.4 ppg (#11 Nat'l)

1st Half

Had a good offensive start led by C Brandon Braun and SF Nick Fleming.  Tapered off when our 2nd unit was on the floor, but we recovered nicely towards the end of the 1st half.  Our defense is also holding its own against this high-scoring UCRIV team

Halftime: Up 39-29

Key stat(s)

  • FG: DELST 46%, UCRIV 38%
  • Turn overs: DELST 1, UCRIV 5

Key Players

  • DELST: C Brandon Braun 14 pts, 4 rebs

2nd Half

We are scoring in a variety of ways.  Had to take out C Brandon Braun because of 3 fouls, but that didn't prevent us from taking a 23 pt lead midway in the 2nd half.  We just cruised along for the remainder of the game, without the need to bring back Braun to the floor.  Excellent all around performance by SF Nick Fleming

  • Defense: 1-3-1, press at points
  • Key Players: Sr SG Tahric Hall 12.2 ppg
  • Notes: HBU just 28.3 rpg (#304 Nat'l)

1st Half

Wit our double post threat, we dissected HBU's 1-3-1 zone with absolute precision, and we raced to a 26-2 lead.  As expected, we dominated the boards.  HBU got settled down on their offense, but it was too late for them.  Unless a meltdown of gigantic proportions happen in the 2nd half, this game is practically over

Halftime: Up 51-23

Key stat(s)

  • Rebs: DELST 23, HBU 7

Key Players

2nd Half

Not a bad showing by HBU in the 2nd half, but the hole they dug up to themselves in the 1st was too much too overcome for them
