Tournament of Champions: Promotion, Relegation, and Forced Relocation

Recommended Posts

2013 Offseason

With my team in place in its current form and arbitration behind us, I started pressing down on my targets. Without going into a lot of details about the failures, here are the people I had high on my list based on their demands and my needs. My main focus was to build depth in the bullpen, try to find a decent starter, and fill in some needs at 1B, C, and OF.

I had $9.869M available to me for signing these free agents:

SP Li-Ben Chen, 1 year, $2.5M

My most expensive free agent because the veteran would not accept a cent less. I knew he was 40 years old, but he was someone I felt could step in as my third or fourth pitcher and at least hold the fort. Youth would have been money better spent, but there were no young pitchers within my budgetary limits, so I made Chen a Sun.

1B Jose Alaniz, 2 years, $1.6M/year

For posterity sake, hit .303 with 19 home runs and 78 RBI (.387 OBP, .460 slug) for KC in 2012. Offered a definite upgrade over Rivera as my usual starter.

MR Aaron Laffey, 1 year, $598,400
He was looking to improve the competition he faced from his time in the Omega League with Pittsburgh, so I felt I got a bargain at just over half a mill.

MR Pat Neshek, 3 years, $850,000 per year
The longest deal I offered. Neshek was coming off a really good year in Miami, though it is probably pretty easy to have a decent year there. The Towers are freakin' good. Anyway, I felt that Neshek could be my top reliever, so I offered him a three-year deal, and he jumped on it.

LF/C Evan Gattis, 2 years, $975,000 per year
Gattis is one of those dynamic players GMs love to have. My intention in signing him was to make him the starter at catcher and move Kottaras to backup. If my minor league prospect Chen would blast his way into playing time, then I could move Gattis into the outfield without a problem. Regardless, Gattis was a must-get for me for depth purposes.

SP C. Kluber – minor league contract
Former fifth overall pick by the Denver Peaks was there for the taking. I'm not sure if he'll ever "get" it but he has a load of potential talent. Depending where we are in the race, I may try to give him a few late-season shots to see if he can be anything for me in the future.

Draft:
Round  1, Pick 8 – SP Tex Etheridge, Missouri State University, 19 y.o.
Tops out at 96 on the gun. Strong FB and cutter, but needs to work a lot on his changeup before he gets a big league shot. Right now he has good movement, but needs to develop more on his placement to avoid giving up a lot of big hits.

Round 2, Pick 8 – CF Brandon Kirkpatrick, Sioux City HS, 19 y.o.
Drafted him for SPEED. Don't know if he can ever be a great producer on offense, but if he can get on base, he can steal a base or two. Also, great range in the OF gives him a chance to be an everyday player in the future.

Round 3, Pick 8 – SS Cal Ackland, Augusta Chrsitian (GA) HS, 18 y.o.
Defensive gem. Will have to bat eighth in the lineup if he ever makes it to the bigs, but great arm and glove in the infield means he will be a great defensive shortstop for years to come. Pretty good plate discipline could put him in position for good K/BB ratio.

Round 4, Pick 8 – SP Richard Skidmore, Dixie State University, 20 y.o.
Definite project. Not a strong arm, in fact, doesn't make the hard throw. Instead, depends on an array of off speed and moving pitches. Needs to make some huge leaps in improvement to sniff the majors.

Round 5, Pick 8 – 3B Ethan Riley, NY Tech University, 19 y.o.
Another project. May get some early playing time, though, just to see if he has it. Needs to improve his offense, but I can see that happening if he just starts to love the game. Solid defensive player at the hot corner, so he can be an asset there. Wait and see for me, but worth the pick in the fifth round.

2014 Season Notes - The Chopping Block and Team Nickname Change

In the Champions Association, there is a mandatory relocation rule for teams in the Omega League that cannot improve themselves over a five-year period. The reason for the initial rules of so much movement among leagues (5 of 12 teams in the Omega League are promoted each year, for instance) was to ensure that some of the top markets would not get an unlucky draw at first, and then be in danger of losing a franchise. Despite all of the plans put in place, there are still two franchises that are "on the chopping block": the Baltimore Bullets and the Edmonton Freeze.

Baltimore has been the worse of the two franchises, having only had one season where it came close to being promoted. In 2010, the Bullets finished 11th in the OL, meaning that they had no postseason. However, in 2011, despite finishing 10th, Baltimore had a chance to be promoted. They beat 3rd ranked Pittsburgh in the first round of the Omega Cup tournament, meaning they were in a battle where three of four teams would be promoted. However, Baltimore then went on to get swept by Louisville and Buffalo to remain in the OL for a third year. In 2012, Baltimore again finished 10th after defeating Vancouver in the play-in game, but the Bullets were swept by Minneapolis to end their season. In 2013, the Bullets had their highest finish: fifth. Despite that high finish, Baltimore was again swept in the first round of the Omega Cup tournament.

Edmonton has had two higher finishes than Baltimore, but the Freeze also had two terrible season. In 2010, the Freeze finished 7th in the Omega League. However, they exited the first round of the Omega Cup tournament with a two games to one loss to Oklahoma City. In 2011, the Freeze missed the postseason by finishing 11th in the league. They stepped down another slot in 2012 to finish dead last. Despite the back-to-back disappointing seasons, Edmonton seemed to bounce back in 2013 by finishing 7th again. However, a first round exit to Philadelphia means they remain in the Omega League for a fifth season.

Should either team fail to gain promotion this season, they will relocate to the cities waiting. The complication of the situation is that the Champions Association did not make prior rules about what would happen if multiple teams would be forced to relocate. The thought is that the top franchise waiting will get first choice of if they want to take over the Baltimore or Edmonton franchise. Because that’s where the money is, the next location spot is a second Los Angeles-area team in Anaheim. The second choice is a third New York team in Queens. Both franchises have logos and jerseys ready, so all they need is a place in the league.

Also, even if neither Baltimore nor Edmonton relocates, there are talks of expanding the Omega League by two teams. The proposed expansion would mean a total of 14 teams in the league, with possible further expansion trickling up with more teams promoted to eventually expand the Gamma then Beta then Alpha Leagues.

One final note: The Boston Night Hawks have decided to drop the "Night" to become just the Hawks with new logo, color scheme, and uniforms. Logo and newly acquired free agent C.C. Sabathia's baseball card below.

2014 Spring Bowl

We were not allowed to participate in the Spring Bowl because of a low finish in the 2013 BL season, so I just watched for basic scouting purposes. Until my team participates in a tournament, I consider myself to be a spectator. I certainly found the results to be interesting.

Though the Blizzard won the Gamma League a year ago, I didn't consider them to be a major player worth taking the Spring Game. We will be in the same league this season in the Beta League, so they are a team worth watching. Other than Alex Cobb, who won the Spring Bowl MVP as Minneapolis' ace, there are a few other notable players on their team:

CL Matt Belisle - He had limited time last season with Minneapolis but still managed a 0.39 ERA in 23.1 innings with 15 saves. On the season with both Portland and Minneapolis, he was 5-0 with 16 saves and a 1.85 ERA. With the Blizzard, he is the straight up closer, and he is good!

1B Mark Teixeira - .293/.373/.511, 26 HRs, 76 RBI last season, and that was a DOWN season for him.

3B Kevin Youkilis - Came over to the Blizzard in a midseason trade with Toronto. Finished the 2013 season with a line of .330/.413/.595 with 24 HR and 77 RBI.

RF Domonic Brown - The youngster has emerged as a star. Had career highs of .311/.390/.556 with 28 HR and 96 RBI.

2014 Spring Bowl - The Perfect Game

If you didn't notice it on the tournament brackets, the second round of the loser's bracket featured an amazing feat by the Denver Peak's Jeremy Hefner: a perfect game! I have pasted the box score below. As you can see, 27 batters faced, 27 batters retired. Congratulations to Jeremy Hefner and being the first to throw a perfect game in the Champions Association.

2014 Preseason and Preseason Predictions

Our Preseason Games

We had two five-game series to get us ready for the regular season. Basically, what I was looking for in the team was how well the dynamics of batting and pitching would work. This only helped to confirm what I thought I knew: we would be a pretty good offense with an occasional hiccup, our starting pitching would be OK, and our relievers would be well below average or even the worst in the BL.

Series 1: at Detroit
We went 2-3: 9-8, 0-3, 3-0, 4-10, 10-11
The goal was to limit all pitchers' pitch counts each game and to use the entire lineup for the games. No starter threw more than three innings, so arms could be fresh going into the season. Everyone had playing time, which I think was beneficial.

Series 2: vs St. Louis
Again 2-3: 3-0, 3-2, 0-5, 4-7, 0-1
I was more disappointed in how the batters responded in this series, but we were trying out a lot of combos to see who fit where. Gattis played catcher and outfield. I told the manager he was signed to play catcher more because that's where the need is, and we'll think about either calling up the rookie later or looking to free up money to sign another catcher for next year. Anyway, this was preseason, and overall I was happy with how well the starting pitching looked in limited action. Even the game where we gave up 7 was not due to the starter (Myers).

Preseason Predictions by League

2014PreseasonBeta_zps707b82a6.jpg2014PreseasonGamma_zpsfe2b010c.jpg2014PreseasonOmega_zpse6bcd3d6.jpg

I don't know why the preseason predictions are "off." Maybe I simulated some games before generating the predictions report?!? Anyway, I am just using this as a basis to give me an idea of where teams are expected to finish.

For us, 3rd in the Beta League means some good things. Of course, 1st would be better, and anything lower than 3rd would be a disappointment.

The Freeze left fielder posted a .364 batting average with 8 home runs, 18 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

Peavy Tabbed as April's Starter of the Month: Whether Jake Peavy stays in Detroit beyond this season remains to be seen, but while he's here he's making the most of it. In April the 32-year-old certainly pulled out all the stops by winning the Alpha League Pitcher of the Month award.

He put up some fancy numbers with a 5-1 record and and an ERA of 2.52. In 39.1 innings he struck out 44, surrendered 35 hits, 13 walks and proved to be a solid performer in 6 starts last month.

Adam Dunn Named Best AL Batter in April: Adam Dunn has been fortunate enough to kick around the majors for years. Today he was honored for his solid hitting last month. In April, the 34-year-old put up a .313 batting average to win the Alpha League Batter of the Month.

The veteran first baseman tallied 11 home runs, 26 RBIs and 15 runs scored for the month.

Players of the Month

Brooklyn's Gonzalez BL Top Pitcher: Miguel Gonzalez had an outstanding April -- so good that the Beta League presented him with the Pitcher of the Month Award earlier today.

"There's no way to know where the Avengers would be without Gonzalez," one fan is quoted as saying.

In April Gonzalez dominated the competition, running up a 5-1 record, a 1.48 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 48.2 innings.

Great April Gets Johnson BL Best Hitter Award: April was a good month for Ben J Johnson. The Buffalo center fielder had his way with opposing pitchers all month while posting a .352 batting average and was selected as the Beta League Batter of the Month.

Last month Johnson put up some solid numbers: 7 home runs, 21 RBIs, 15 runs scored and a .383 on-base percentage.

Volume V, Issue 2

April 2014

April Schedule
New Mexico 14-14, T-6th

AprilSchedule_zpse3896846.jpg

Best Stretch
The Suns started off the season looking like they were ready to unload on the Beta League when they swept the Memphis Hound Dogs. New Mexico followed up that series sweep by winning three of their next four series to start out the season at 10-4 before . . .

Worst Stretch
. . . the nine game losing streak occurred. After dropping the series finale to Buffalo, New Mexico was swept by Oakland and Minneapolis, and then lost their first two games against Toronto, including an embarrassing 17-3 loss in the first game of the series.

Best Hitter in April
Miguel Cabrera, 3B
The star of the team did exactly what was expected of him, going 39 of 112 (.348) with three doubles, a triple, six home runs, 18 RBI, 19 runs, seven walks, and 23 strikeouts.

Best Pitcher in April
Travis Wood, SP
Wood was not successful win-wise, but he brought the best stuff to the mound for the Suns. In six starts, Wood allowed 13 runs, all earned, on 37 hits in 38.1 innings. He added 15 walks and 30 strikeouts while going 2-2 with a 3.05 ERA.

Injuries and Transactions
Placed CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to 04/01/2014.
Placed CF Ramón Ybarra on the active roster.

New Player Feature
Jose Alaniz, 1B
The former Kansas City Sting first baseman signed on with New Mexico after his time in Kansas City was done. The 32-year-old Venezuelan played for the Sting for four years. Before that, he was a player in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League with the Tigres de Aragua before trying his luck in America in the newly-formed league.

In the Champions Association, he has had decent success. Last season as the full-time starter, Alaniz played every game for the Beta pennant winners and Gold Trophy winners. Alaniz had a career-high .303 batting average and RBI total of 19 and tied his career high with 19 home runs.

This season Alaniz may share some of the first base duties with Justin Smoak, though Alaniz is expected to get the majority of the starts.

New Mexico Suns Monthly, V.3, May 2014

New Mexico Suns Monthly
Volume V, Issue 3
May 2014

May Schedule
New Mexico 27-30, 8th

BMaySchedule_zpsdce38ecf.jpg

Best Stretch
From May 16-20, the Suns found their winning ways, sweeping San Francisco and then winning the first two against Buffalo. Though May was a tough month for injuries, New Mexico finished the month still hovering around .500.

Worst Stretch
Two four-game losing streaks defined May for the injury-depleted roster. So far this season, New Mexico has hated to see Minneapolis, losing all six games against them so far. They have not fared much better against Oakland, only winning one of six. The Suns will need to find a way to take those series when they face them again starting at the end of June.

Best Hitter in April
Evan Gattis, C/LF
Christian Yelich may have led the team in hits in May with 34, but newcomer Gattis lit up the scoreboard, finishing the month with a .293 clip, eight home runs, and 17 RBI. While the Suns missed the big bat of Miguel Cabrera, Gattis helped to keep the offense moving.

Batting Stats

BMayBatting_zps25a0aae1.jpg

Best Pitcher in April
Travis Wood, SP
Wood again was the go-to pitcher in the Suns' rotation, finishing with a 2-1 record and a 1.23 ERA in six starts.

Saturday, May 31st, 2014
Placed SS António Espinoza on the reserve roster.
Activated 3B Miguel Cabrera from the disabled list.
Placed 3B Miguel Cabrera on the active roster.

New Player Feature
Matt Harvey, SP

With a promising young catcher like Kien Chan on the roster, you would think the Suns would be content with the future at that position. But what the Suns had in talent at catcher, they had way less talent in the starting pitching rotation.

That is why New Mexico traded for Matt Harvey. The former Charlotte Pilots pitcher did not have a great record in his first two years in the league, but what he did have was an ability to keep game scores down, allowing the bullpen to hold it or lose it. Before joining the Suns, Harvey was 4-2 with a 4.16 ERA with the Pilots, but the Suns' management team is expecting bigger things from him in Albuquerque.

2014 Season - May

AL Standings

2014StandingsBALMay_zps0566c839.jpg

Players of the Month

AL's #1 Starter is Zimmermann: An outstanding 6-0 record in May earned Jordan M Zimmermann the Pitcher of the Month Award in the Alpha League. When his name was penciled in to start on the Dallas lineup card, it meant trouble for opposing teams.

In 45 innings of work, Zimmermann limited opposing batters to 28 base hits and a .174 batting average. He notched 38 strikeouts, issued 5 walks and had a 1.00 ERA.

So far this season, Zimmermann has logged a 9-2 record with a 1.91 ERA. He has started 12 games, hurled 84.2 innings and registered 68 strikeouts and 10 walks.

May's Best Batter Announced: A hot-hitting Carlos Quentin punished AL pitchers in May, hitting .380 in 28 games while racking up 13 home runs, 29 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

With those numbers it came as no surprise that New Orleans's 31-year-old right fielder earned Alpha League Batter of the Month honors.

Quentin is batting .316 with 19 home runs and 52 RBIs this season.

BL Standings

2014StandingsBBLMay_zpsa15efbaf.jpg

Players of the Month

Beers Starter Named May's Premier Pitcher: Rodrigo Hernández hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning Beta League Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice.

In May the Milwaukee starter earned a 6-0 mark in 6 starts. He threw 42.2 innings, struck out 36 and compiled a solid 1.27 ERA.

To date this season, Hernández has a record of 9 wins and 1 loss and a 1.47 ERA. He has appeared in 12 games and struck out 80 in 85.2 innings.

Torrid May Gets Teixeira BL #1 Batter Trophy: Mark Teixeira was declared the Beta League Batter of the Month today. Minneapolis's first baseman stroked 39 hits in 104 at-bats for a .375 average in May.

He also hit 12 home runs, drove in 34 and scored 24 runs.

Teixeira is hitting .324 this year with 20 home runs and 57 RBIs. He also has an OBP of .392, 20 walks and scored 43 times.

GL Standings

2014StandingsBGLMay_zps97fa072f.jpg

Players of the Month

Duffy Earns GL's Best Pitcher Honor: Denver's Danny Duffy has made fans throughout Gamma League take notice over the past month with an exceptional 6-0 record. No pitcher in the Gamma League threw better in May, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today.

In 6 starts Duffy compiled a 1.06 ERA, putting up a 6-0 record, striking out 43 and tossing 42.1 innings.

To date this year in 12 starts, Duffy has crafted a 10-2 mark with a 1.62 ERA.

GL's Best Batter Picked: Philadelphia first baseman Yeow-whye Cheung put the wraps on a fine May by capturing the Gamma League Batter of the Month honors today.

He put up a .364 batting average and .405 on-base percentage last month while racking up 12 home runs, 29 RBIs, 25 runs scored and 6 walks.

This season Cheung has hit 20 home runs and posted a .301 batting average.

OL Standings

2014StandingsBOLMay_zpsb14566a0.jpg

Players of the Month

OL's Top Starter is Cahill: Trevor Cahill took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the Omega League Pitcher of the Month award for May.

The 26-year-old Buzzards starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 5-0 won-lost record in 6 starts. This month he fanned 39 batters in 43.2 innings and compiled a 2.27 ERA.

This year Cahill has compiled a 7-2 mark with a 3.20 ERA in 12 starts.

Louisville's Ortiz Bags OL Batting Award: David Ortiz is in the final year of his contract with Louisville and today added a timely piece of hardware to his trophy case. Playing in 29 games in May the 38-year-old first baseman ripped Omega League pitchers for a .330 batting average, nabbing him the Batter of the Month award.

He also rang up 9 home runs, 24 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

If Ortiz keeps up this pace, he'll cost someone a lot of money.

This year Ortiz is hitting .342, produced 41 RBIs and 14 home runs, scored 36 times and gotten on base at a .416 rate.

CBA Announces Changes for 2015

May 25, 2014

The Champions Baseball Association has announced that it will change its promotion and relegation system for its sixth year, allowing more establishment in the young leagues.

Beginning in 2015, at least one fewer team will be promoted and relegated per league. With the system in place now, a large number of teams move up and down each season, with the Gamma League having the most movement of nine of 12 teams moving either up or down each season. Starting next year, they will still lead, but will only have six of 12 teams moving up or down.
The 2015 promotion/relegation system will thus change to the following:
* The Alpha League will relegate three teams per season.

* The Beta League will promote three teams and relegate three teams.
* The Gamma League will promote three teams and relegate three teams.
* The Omega League will promote three teams.

The changes make moving up or down more complicated, and it also increases the chances of a team in the Omega League of being forced to relocate. Currently, the Edmonton Freeze and Baltimore Bullets are the only two teams in position to be forced to relocate. The relocation rule states that any team in the Omega League for five consecutive seasons without being promoted is forced to relocate to a waiting franchise location with ownership handed over, also.

The playoff systems have changed also because of the promotion and relegation changes. One of the cups, the Gamma Survivors Cup has been eliminated.

For starters, the Tournament of Champions Bowl will now have an additional four teams, with the Alpha sending its top five regular season teams, the Beta League sending its top four teams, the Gamma League sending its top three teams, and the Omega sending its top two teams. Like before, the teams will be seeded from highest regular season record per league, meaning the Alpha League’s pennant winner will have the highest seed, and the next four teams in the Alpha will have seeds two through five. Then the Beta League pennant winner will be the sixth seed through the fourth place team receiving the ninth seed. The Gamma League pennant winner will receive the tenth seed, with the other two teams having the eleventh and twelfth seeds. Finally, the Omega League pennant winner and runner-up will have seeds thirteen and fourteen.

The Beta League’s playoff format, the battle for the Gold Trophy, will now include four teams. The losers of the first round will then battle for the right to be promoted in a five-game series with the winner moving into the Alpha League the following season. Also, the Beta Cup will now be an eight-team double elimination series tournament. The winner of the entire tournament will hold the Beta Cup Trophy, while there will also be a Survivors Cup series for the right to remain in the Beta League. Series lengths will vary.
In the Gamma League, the top three teams now will battle for the Silver Trophy. All three teams are automatically promoted to the Beta League for the following season.

That means the Gamma Cup and Survivors Cup have been combined for one grand survival tournament. The nine-team field will feature a play-in game between the bottom two seeds, with the loser being relegated. The remaining eight teams then battle in a double elimination tournament, with the final team earning the Gamma Cup. Two more teams will be eliminated in the tournament to become the other two relegated teams.

The Omega League will still have an eight-team Omega Cup battle with seeds three through ten battling it out for promotion, with two changes. The first is that the tournament has also become double elimination. Also, only the Omega Cup winners can be promoted, unlike in the past where three participants in the tournament would be promoted.

There is talk of possibly expanding leagues by two teams each in the future, bringing the total number of franchises in the league to 56. That is something the commissioner’s office has on the table, but there has yet to be any long-term plans added. It is possible, according to a source in the commissioner’s office, that the league may expand slowly, with the Omega League at first adding two teams, and eventually jumping more teams up into higher leagues as more expansion possibilities occur. None of these changes are expected to occur in 2015.

Turn and face the strange: Ch-ch-changes
I tried to post the complete month of June without it working or letting me retrieve it. Sucks for me. The part I hate most about dynasty reports is all of the photobucket grabs and such, which looks to be what I will have to do again to continue my dynasty posts.

With that said, being the GM of the Suns has severely slowed down this dynasty. I'm excited to see who wins tournaments and making banners for the winners, so I am going to change the direction of my dynasty again following the 2014 season.

I prefer to be the commissioner and be able to look in on all squads equally. Being the GM of a team narrows my focus and makes everything too cumbersome. Thus, my first person GM character is moving into the association's front office after one season as GM of the Suns so that I can focus on the fun parts of this particular dynasty. I'll do my GMing offline from now on where I can fail in secrecy.

Now, to repost June standings and top players. Scratch that. Don't feel like fighting with my browser, so standings and a few news and notes about the Suns. Going to try to speed things up and sim through the remainder of the regular season to see how it feels to run a team in the postseason, even if they are only battling for survival.

Hmm... Sorry about the formatting. I have recently given up on Chrome, which was much better for formatting, because of some major lag and lack of cooperation recently. I don't know why that changed for me, but I suspect it's my dying laptop leading towards the problems. Anyway, now I am using Firefox, which is not as good as Chrome for formatting these dynasty posts. In time, I will learn it better, though. I hadn't used Firefox in a few years, but it is much easier on my laptop. My laptop doesn't heat up as much when watching videos and posting in general.

Author's note

Time has not been on my side. However, I will try to come back to this dynasty, with some expected changes back to the way it was. A month from now, I will have much more time, so maybe I can start pushing this dynasty towards more tourneys and banners, like it was intended. I'll never figure out why I wanted to start micromanaging a team when there were so many other "things" to do with this set up. Anyway, my GM will be one and done. He's been offered a promotion to the league front office, thus he will resign at the end of the 2014 season. Then, all focuses will be on the tourneys, promotions, relegations, and potential relocations. Also, expansion!
