Flyers Miss Playoffs for 1st Time Since 1993
72243429_display_image.jpg?1313611820

The Philadelphia Flyers continued their downfall after the lockout, as they failed to make the playoffs. Antero Niittymaki struggled in his first year as the starter in Philadelphia posting a 31-29-9 record with a 2.96GAA and 89.3SV% while Robert Esche continued to struggle after his 2004 Stanley Cup Playoff performance. On offense the Flyers were led by their top line of Gagne-Forsberg-Knuble, but struggled to find secondary scoring particularly from their young up and coming players like Jeff Carter, Mike Richards and RJ Umberger. Joni Pikanen led the Flyers defense but Derian Hatcher and Mike Rathje failed to make the impact they were looked upon since signing their contracts shortly after the lockout ended. GM Paul Holmgren was fired at the end of the season and replaced by Nicholas Ritt, who led the Phantoms to an exceptional season. GM Nicholas Ritt quickly let Ken Hitchcock go and hired John Meckler. Ritt was also quick to ship off some veterans for solid youth and picks

Draft Report

5I8MMQT.png
fUWQsLx.png

Flyers had arguably the best 2nd round due to the three of the first ten picks in the round. James van Riemsdyk was labeled by some scouts as a Top Three selection but fell to #6 while Jonathan Blum and Kevin Shattenkirk could make an impact in a few years. Look for Carl Hagelin to surprise some in the coming years.

San Jose win the Stanley Cup

ezAuDAx.png

DTKvU4M.png

esozYt3.png

Pretty solid draft for us. Columbus came calling about Blum and I managed to get their 1st out of it which turned into Bogosian. Trusted my scouts in this draft. Holtby was a pretty unanimous pick at the 6th overall selection by the scouting staff.

Scout Reports:
Holtby - Starting Goalie, Better Mike Smith
Bogosian - 1-2 D, Better Andrew Alberts
Moisan - 1-2 D, Better Tom Poti
Stepan - 1-2 C, Better Johnny Pohl
McRae - 2nd Line, Like Henrik Zetterberg
Pouliot - 3rd Line, Like Ryan Smyth
Jacquemet - 3rd - Limited, Better Konstantin Baranov
Kessel - 3-6 D, Like Ryan Whitney
Guerette-Charland - 3rd Line, Like Vaclav Prospal

Pretty high hopes for these prospects

My only signing that I was successful at was bringing in Jonas Hiller over from Switzerland. He turned out to be a blessing, keeping us in a lot of games. We were in contention right before the deadline so I didn't move Forsberg, but the 1st game after the deadline he went down with a fractured arm. That led to an implosion with us going 6-19-3 in the final games. Straight down to the bottom of the conference and league, just like that. As far as moves made during the season, I managed to swing a deal to get Keith Ballard(3-6 Dman), Justin Williams, Shaone Morrison, Doug Murray, and an extra 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick

OFFSEASON

Calgary Flames ended up winning the 2008-09 Stanley Cup over Buffalo
Philadelphia Flyers won the Draft Lottery, only made one big move.

Flyers Trade Peter Forsberg to Colorado for 2009 1st(21st Overall)

Kcn0JRn.png

vxR2NLS.png

Easy decision on who to draft. John Tavares is going to be in the Orange and Black in maybe 2 years if not next season if he impresses. Mostly a Forwards draft. There were no goalies ranked in the top 50 and I'm pretty solid on the defensive side of the prospect pool.

Start of free agent, I noticed Pekka Rinne was a RFA for Nashville and quickly offered Boston's 2010 2nd Round for him. So we have a new goalie. Turned around and traded Thibault to Atlanta for their 2010 2nd and sent Sami Kapanen to the Rangers for their 2010 2nd.

As far as signings go the Flyers signed Scott Hartnell, Alyn McCauley, and Jay Pandolfo off of the Free Agent. Also a slew of prospects agreed to Entry Level Contracts. James van Riemsdyk, Carl Hagelin, Brad Malone, Kevin Shattenkirk, Blake Kessel and Kevyn Guerrette-Charland all will either be with the Flyers or the Phantoms next season.

Here is our Team Report going into 2009-10 Season. I'm expecting a playoff berth at the least.

0GXut4o.png

My word is that a sexy Prospect pool. I can't wait for the JVR-Tavares-Giroux line to be unleashed in the 2010-11 season(hopefully)

2009-10 Season

Another disappointing year, but some improvements. Ended up firing John Meckler and replacing him with Bobby Carpenter towards the end of February after a long slide. Start off good, end crappy....we're turning into the Maple Leafs.
Posted Image

Powerplay was crap, PK was great, Pekka Rinne and Jonas Hiller both had over 8.00 AVRs so Goaltending isn't an issue. Managed to improve the team with the additions of Shea Weber, Patrick Kane, Max Talbot and Jay McKee so hopefully that will lead us to the playoffs along with improvements to our players. Jeff Carter is working his way out of my good graces and with John Tavares waiting, I may pull the trigger on a deal. I think we just need time, but I think my leash is getting tight. We need to make the playoffs.

As far as the league. Colorado won another Stanley Cup, beat the Penguins in 7 AFTER BEING DOWN 3-0.
Let's take a moment and laugh at the Pens

Off-season

GFnrqOR.png

Carolina won the lottery and than made a VERY questionable pick......actually quite a few head scratchers... The only major move made was New Jersey sending Zach Parise and their 2010 2nd to Edmonton for their 1st(2nd Overall). The third overall pick is the Hasek regen

k8pkc8f.png
Scout Reports
Tarasenko - 1st Line Potential, Better Loui Eriksson
Bennett - 1st Line Potential, Better David Backes
Stolt - 1st Line Potential, Like Ryan Malone(Mikael Renberg Regen)
Gogolev - 1st line Potential, Like Alex Steen
Evans - 3/4 Potential, Like Nicklas Kronwall
Bjugstad - 3rd Line Potential, Like Eric Lindros
Sobchenko - 2nd Line Potential, Like Daymond Langkow
Svoboda - Back up Potential, Poor Tim Thomas(Roman Cechmanek Regen)

Pretty damn good draft. All those 2nd rounders are paying off. LOL Drafted two ex-flyer regens.

Free Agents

A lot of big name were available and signed.
Some of the big signings.

Atlanta signed Pavel Kubina
Tampa Bay signed Sheldon Souray
Los Angeles signed Marc Savard
Boston signed Sergei Gonchar
New Jersey signed Patrick Marleau
Atlanta signed Jaromir Jagr
Phoenix signed Milan Hedjuk
PHILADELPHIA signed Jason Spezza
Chicago signed Evgeni Nabokov
Calgary signed Brian Rafalski
New York Islanders signed Chris Pronger
Montreal signed Olli Jokinen
Vancouver signed Christian Ehrhoff
Edmonton signed Dany Heatley
PHILADELPHIA signed Kim Johansson

Failed to lure Rafalski, Pronger, or Ehrhoff, but did pull Spezza. Decided to offer him a deal to help that 1st line score and take some slack off Richards and Carter, though Carter could be dealt for a Defenseman. Did sign Tavares, Bogosian and Stepan to ELCs and they'll spend the year with the Phantoms(Baring injuries). Everyone has had a year of development and both JVR and Giroux were "Turning Heads" in Training Camp.

End of Year
Awesome season though the ending was a bit of a tough pill to swallow. Things started with James van Riemsdyk tearing his ACL(Out 7 months), then Mike Richards slightly tore his MCL(3 months), Kim Johannson tore his UCL(3 Months), Spezza had a shoulder issue(2 months), Giroux had a hip flexor issue(1 Month), and last but not least Pekka Rinne had a strained shoulder(3 weeks). All that within the last few weeks of the playoffs. Still managed to take 1st in the conference, but a tough battle vs the Montreal Canadians proved too much(Swept in 4). Ended up trading Jeff Carter and two prospects to Anaheim for Bobby Ryan and Ryan Wilson. The amount of injuries led to John Tavares being called up and he filled the 2nd line slot amazingly well(9-21-30, 8.19 AVR) and secured his roster spot next year. The Phantoms also took 1st in the conference and also fell in the 1st round. Holtby was a monster for them. Thrashers won their 2nd Stanley Cup beating Vancouver 4-3(Series and Game 7 in OT).

A Division Title and #1 Seed should result in a nice playoff run, but things didn't work out that way for the young Philadelphia Flyer squad. Now one year older they look to continue to become a dominant force in the league. They will ice arguably the best Top 9 in the league with Gagne-Spezza-Kane leading the way. John Tavares will center James van Riemsdyk and Claude Giroux on the 2nd line. Tavares performed admirably during his time with the Flyers due to injuries. Bobby Ryan, Mike Richards, and Justin Williams will ice a 3rd line that can play hockey on both sides of the rink. Any of those lines have the potential to take over a game. The 4th line of Alan McCauley-Max Talbot-Scott Hartnell is nothing to scoff at either. They'll be leaned upon as a shut down line and chip in a few dirty goals.

On the back-end Shea Weber and Joni Pitkanen lead a blueline that is only improving. Zach Bogosian was expected to have a spot on the opening night roster, but underperformed during 3 preseason games(6.50AVR) while Jussi Timonen and Adam Pardy secured roster spots with great showings during preseason play. Kim Johansson and Dennis Wideman can do it all and don't be surprised to see a few pucks put behind opposing goalies with these two.

In net Pekka Rinne and Jonas Hiller have quietly become an elite duo and can shut down any offense in the league. Rinne is expected to start between 55-65 games while Hiller will take the rest. Holtby will keep the Phantoms in contention while he waits his turn with the big league.

Prediction: The Rangers and Penguins are breathing down the Flyers neck, but this young team has the potential to take home the President Trophy. 1st in East, 1st in Atlantic. At Least a Conference Final bid.

Rumor Mills: Bobby Ryan is being shopped for a Defenseman under the age of 25. Flyers rumored to be looking at Islanders' Alex Pietrangelo or Chicago's Duncan Keith. Ryan had an iffy preseason and is projected to play on the third line.

Almost had a 2nd division in title in as many years, but the wheels came off a bit towards the end of the year allowing the Penguins to pass. Could have had a better shot at clinching but we dropped the season finale to the Devils and the Penguins picked up a point in their finale vs Toronto. So we get a shot at exacting our revenge vs Montreal in the 1st round. Injuries were a little rough towards the end of the year. Gagne went down for 3 months with a fractured ankle and we lost Giroux in the season finale for possibly the 1st round. Other than that though we were lucky and when we did have injuries our call ups performed admirably.

We did make two moves during the season; sending Bobby Ryan and Nick Bjustad for Alex Pietrangelo and sending Scott Hartnell to LA for Dustin Brown near the deadline. Both these deals worked out for the teams involved. Ryan led the Isles in scoring and held an 8.0+ AVR(better than he did here) and Pietrangelo anchored our 2nd D-line pairing. While Hartnell aided the Kings league leading defense and Brown added some snarl to our potent third line of McCauley-Richards-Brown.

Rinne and Hiller were solid the whole year, but did go through inconsistent patches where they were brick walls for some games and then swiss cheese. Rinne is our #1 goalie and will start during the playoffs but Coach Carpenter isn't afraid to throw Hiller in if Rinne's inconsistent play keeps up.

FLYERS WIN STANLEY CUP

CUAeBWS.png

We did it! Took us a few years in the bottom of the East and League but with a little patience and some solid deals we're Stanley Cup champs. It was an exciting Cup run starting with getting our revenge on Montreal, who swept us last year. We almost swept them, but a 3-2 Win during Game 4 only delayed the inevitable. Everyone chipped in during the series and Pekka Rinne was spectacular allowing only 7 goals in the 5 game series.

Next up was those annoying New Jersey Devils. We took Game 1 in Overtime and then Brodeur took over. He held our potent offense(minus Giroux and Gagne :P) to only 3 goals in Game 2, 3, and 4 and despite Rinne's goaltending we found ourselves down 3-1 going back back to Philadelphia for Game 5. Game 5 was another overtime victory with Spezza scoring all three goals and we finally had some momentum going for us. Rinne threw up a brick wall for Game 6 and suddenly we were tied up. Another shutout from Rinne in Game 7 and we were moving on to a date with the Maple Leafs.

Rinne kept up his goalkeeping clinic as he shut out Toronto in Game 1(3 straight games). Nik Antropov ended Rinne's shutout streak midway through the 2nd period, but that was the only offense Toronto could muster in the whole series as Rinne and the stingy Flyers defense shut the Leafs down in Game 3 and 4, punching a ticket to the Stnaley Cup Finals vs Roberto Luongo and the Vancouver Canucks.

Vancouver fresh off their 7-game series victory over the LA Kings took it to the Flyers in Game 1 and 2 with a 5-3 and 4-2 victory that had Canuck fans counting on a parade coming to Vancouver. Luongo and his 1.28 GAA was stopping the Flyers at every turn and the Sedin brothers were wrecking house. The Flyers were not going to go down so easily though as they took the next two in Philadelphia with Rinne posting his 6th shutout and Simon Gagne making his return. Fans in Vancouver were still confident that the Canucks wouldn't let another Stanley Cup fall through their fingertips. And it appeared to be so as both Pekka Rinne and Roberto Luongo put on a show with a 1-1 tie going into Overtime, but Patrick Kane sent the Vancouver faithful home sad and worrying with his OT winner. The Wachovia Center was rocking for Game 6 and with the Stanley Cup only one win away the fans had every reason to blow the roof off the WC. Wideman and Giroux scored in the 1st, McCauley scored in the 2nd and van Riemsdyk put the nails on the coffin early in the 3rd to give the Flyers a 4-2 win and their 3rd Stanley Cup in Franchise History ending a 36 year drought.

"It's an amazing feeling and everyone in Philadelphia should be proud. I want to thank the fans for continuing to stand by our team during my 1st few years and having faith that we could become Stanley Cup champions." GM Nicholas Ritt told fans during the parade.

2012 NHL DRAFT

unOHbpD.png

Islanders won the lottery and selected Sean Monahan, so no surprise there. The strange pick was at number 3. Florida picked some kid some Korea(I'll have to look in the editer to see his PA). A familiar name went 4th and a few more goalies went in the 1st 20 picks. Unsure if anyone is a regen(I'll take a peek later), but no real big reaches except for the Korean kid and Washington reaching for Ben Mosher.

No major deals went down besides us trading our 1st Rounder to Buffalo for Brian Campbell. Easy decision since we had Detroit's 2nd(32nd overall) and that gives us an unreal Blueline. Weber-Pitkanen, Johansson-Pietrangelo, Campbell-Wideman/Bogosian

Hwyxa9I.png

Our draft went solid. "Reached" for Ristolainen but it was at my Head Scouts recommendation. He was ranked in the 100s for some reason. Same with Pokka. Both are rated at 1-2 Dman(Pronger and Marc Staal respectively). Some solid depth was picked up in the later rounds

Hurme - 3rd Line Potential, Like Ryan Craid

Kurki - 4th Line Potential, Like Jan Bulis

Mullen - 3-4 Dman Potential, Like Andrei Zyuzin

Sinkkonen - 4th Line Potential, like Kris Beech

Lehto - No scouting report(yet)

2012-13 Flyers Preview

93GXrhZ.png
Key Additions: Brian Campbell(TRADE)
Key Losses: Dennis Wideman(Trade)
The Flyers had an exciting playoff run that ended in with them breaking their Stanley Cup drought. Everyone returns from that team and are one year better. GM Nick Ritt added all-star defenseman Brian Campbell to an already tough blueline. A repeat is not out of the question.

OFFENSE:
The Offense returns very much the same from last year with Kane, Giroux, van Riemsdyk and Tavares one year older. The top two lines can be any combination of Giroux, Kane, JVR, Tavares, Spezza and Gagne, causing an numerous headaches for opposing teams. The third line of McCauley-Richards-Williams can shut down a line and score goals while the 4th line of Brown-McClement-Talbot make a very strong 4th line. Waiting in the wings are Sean Couturier, Kyle Palmieri, Vladamir Tarasenko and Carl Hagelin.

Defense:
This group also returns with the addition of Brian Campbell, who is a major upgrade over Dennis Wideman. Look for Zach Bogosian to finally make his debut in the orange and the black, likely pairing up with veteran Kim Johnsson or young Alex Pietrangelo. There is a great mixture of vets and youngsters that will make opposing forwards work very hard for their scoring chances. Coach Carpenter has plenty of combinations that he can utilize on the blueline. Shea Weber, Joni Pitkanen, Alex Pietrangelo and new comer Brian Campbell can all be leaned on for a ton of minutes night in and night out.

Goaltending:
Pekka Rinne is this team's starter and is now regarded as an elite goaltender after his exceptional showing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season. He'll need to be consistent throughout the whole season to be in the running for a Vezina nomination. Look for either Jonas Hiller or Braden Holtby to secure the backup role. Holtby is ready to take over the back up role, but could still stay with the Phantoms if GM Nicholas Ritt chooses to keep Hiller around as the backup. Rumors are that Hiller would like a starting role and may request a move. GM Nick Ritt would not comment on this rumor.
