I can see a legitimate argument for 30 but not much more than that. The bigger thing that will go into fixing a lot in terms of player hoarding and a lack of FAs is having players demand more salary.

To give everyone a perspective on how easy it is to keep an absolutely stacked team together top players ask for around 6-7 million a season tops, unless they are greedy. The cap at the GHL level is 71.5. So top players are only asking for typically, at most, 10% of the cap available to a team. That means that teams can easily hold onto 6-7 of the top players in the league and still have enough room cap wise to fill the rest of their team with high end players. Those high end players playing more depth roles will, because they are playing depth roles, never ask for much more than depth role money even though they are players fully capable of playing top line roles in the league. Compare this to the NHL where top players get paid at least, with new contracts, 15% of the cap when you ignore the AAV adjustments due to back-diving contracts.

Crosby, when he signed his current deal, signed for 8.7 million against the cap, due to the contract being back-diving he was getting paid 12 million actual, when the cap was at 64.3 million. Cap wise he was getting paid 13.5% of the cap while salary wise he was getting paid 18.7% of the cap. It was rumored that Crosby was going to get 10 mil a season average against the cap. He would have if the last 3 seasons of his deal weren't 3 mil each. Either way, we can't back-dive contracts in this game so I am removing those 3 seasons from the discussion. Crosby demanded, and got, 18.7% of the cap.

The next big contract to look at is Malkin. He signed for 9.5 the next season when the cap was at 69 million. That is a cap hit of only 13.8%. Why was his lower? He took a "home team discount," partially forced by Crosby's contract the season prior and partially because Malkin didn't want a back diving contract. His cap hit should be higher as he is clearly the statistical outlier as I will show later.

The next big contracts were the duo of Kane and Toews. They both signed the exact same back-diving contracts of 10.5 aav and 13.8 actual when the cap was 71.4. Because we can't do back diving contracts the actual salary is what we are concerned with and 13.8 is 19.3% of the cap.

The next big contract to look at is McDavid's. AAV of 12.5 but a slight back-diving contract means that his actual early salary is 15 mil when the cap was at 79.5. That is 18.9% of the cap.

We are missing one massive contract example though. Ovechkin's 08-09 resigning. The AAV is just over 9.5 million but his contract was 13 years total with the first 6 being 9 mil a season and the last 7 being 10. So how do we calculate this one as it isn't back diving? It really won't matter as the cap was only 56.7 million that season. It is going to be 16.8% if you use the 9.5 something AAV or 17.6% if you use the 10 mil seasonal pay.

That is what NHL players are getting payed relative to what the cap is. The closest example we have to go by to our cap in the game is Kane and Toews. If we go by that and compare what top player demands are for us in game you will find that top players are asking for about half of what they should be percentage wise. Imagine McDavid getting paid around 7 million a season and how much that would help the Oilers cap wise. That is what is going on in our game at the moment as top players should be asking for about double what they are actually asking for at the moment. This doesn't mean that all players should be asking for about double what they currently are. However, players that fall just under the top rate players should easily be asking for 7-8 million rather than the ~5 million that they are asking for at the moment while 3-4 million players should be asking for 5-6 million.

Players asking for more appropriate salaries relative to their actual skill level, as well as relative to the cap, would go a long, long way into fixing both of the issues presented here. I'd even go so far as to say that a roster limit would be made redundant with the increased salary demands. Also note that I only think that player salary demands need to be adjusted at the GHL level. They seem fairly appropriate at every other level.

Agree with the sentiment, but disagree with some of the reasoning.  This conversation had been had before and I think needs to continue until there is a fix.
I agree that hoarding is an issue.  Not one of the games main issues, but definitely an issue.  So how do we fix it?  I am not a fan of gentleman's agreements, so if the game allows it, it's not cheating.  Asking managers to drop players or trade players is asking them to help the competition and why would they do that?
    My solutions would be:
    1. Roster Limits.  There's no reason a GHL team needs more than 30 players.  I understand this can be tricky with promoting teams, but I don't see how any team would have a major issue with this if managed properly.  It would also force teams to make quality decisions on which players to start, put in the affiliate or drop.
    2. Better contracts.  Right now contracts are way too low and allowing managers to sign players too cheap.  Cheaper players means more players (and/or a team of all 90+ overall players, which is probably an even bigger issue).
Until those two things are resolved, hoarding will happen - and again, it's not against the rules.

But I'm having trouble with why you called out the teams you did given that your roster is 37 players.
    1. The Hawks only have 31 players.  I'm not sure why you guys hate on him so much.
    2. North Shore has 40+, but like you stated, they just promoted as well.  They only have 2 players 90+ on their roster, so any ill will their way is just misguided.  The reason for the post is to help promoting teams, but they just promoted 3 seasons ago and did fine with a not so stacked roster.  That should be appreciated.
    3. Oshawa and Batchawana are on their own.  Their rosters are high and stacked.   Bash that all you want.
Could the bigger issue possible be teams like the Hawks and Black Devils who both have 12 players 90+ overall on their roster??  Number of players aside, this would be a bigger reason why promoting teams don't have success.  At least IMO.

Since we already track all player stats and records season by season, it is even clear post-reset that a historical league leaderboard is needed to make league seem more “living”.
Many of us would see huge value and added motivation if the League History page displayed player categories like Most Career League Goals/Assists/Points  in a Top 20 format.

This could be extended to a team format as well, with categories like Team Wins in [League Level], clearer records like Most Wins in a Season, etc.

With elements like Team Stories and the blog becoming more active, these categories will let us keep better track on the league history and create more storylines to follow for our teams.

Anders, I hope this is something you consider adding, as this was mentioned multiple times by a fair number of managers.

    END OF SEASON UPDATE:

    1)   Elouan Scott - (94 F):                                                                      Ovechkin + Gretzky trophies (Goals, Points*), Most shots*
Close, but went cold in the last 3 games to finish just off in both key categories.
    2)   Simon-Delorme - (92 D):                                                               Most Points by a Defenceman, Highest +/-
Not even close. Hugely disappointing season on a top offensive team. Questioning his necessity to this squad, and may be moving on next season.
    3)   Henry Lux - (86 F (rookie)):                                                            Most Rookie Points
Likely would have got this without the injury that sidelined him for 8 games. Still, hugely impressive debut campaign with limited ice time and often in a defensive role. 41 points, +16, nearly 60% CF.
    4)  D Sharshin, D Nazarov, F Patrushev, C Stalin, C Putin        100 combined points by Russian players
    DONE. 158 points total.
4a)                                                                                          At least 1 goal scored + assisted by ONLY Russian players
Actually did this, Patrushev from Sharshin and Nazarov. Surprising.
    5)   Sagiv Schuppan - (87 G (rookie)):                                                  40 wins
31 wins, 4 shutouts, and finally settled in and been amazing late in the season with a couple of shutouts. Living up to his potential and 40 wins next season is not unthinkable.
    6)   Roger Muller - (92 C):                                                                     FINALLY HIT GODDAMN 50 POINTS
DONE! Just - exactly 50 points on the season. Frustrating, but there is progress.
Team Objective:                                                                                   Score 300 goals, win 45 games
DONE. 54 wins total including OT wins, good for 1st in the East. 318 GF. Record 1866 CF, and 57.9 CF%. This team absolutely destroyed at even-strength.

As many will see, the Big Delta Stealheads will be taking a few steps back in this season's power rankings and will be focusing on developing some younger players.  We plan on remaining competitive in the hunt for the prestigious Golden Cup, but want to have some fun this season with individual player incentives.  Below are a few I will be tracking this season.  Mostly far fetched goals that will be difficult to attain given the tough competition - and frankly, I will be surprised if they are accomplished.  Also important to note that I won't be doing anything out of the ordinary to try and force these goals other than my typical roster and tactical set up.  Feel free to add your own (not limited to GHL).

    1) Rafael Bolduc - 89 OVR Forward ... most GHL goals.
    2) Kvido Zluky - 86 OVR Defenseman ... most GHL Points by a defenseman.
3a) Henri Pohl - 83 OVR Goalie ... I want this guy to win Vezina.  Given his low endurance and the fact that my team wins might be lower than usual, I don't think that is possible.  Instead, I am going to try and get him 50-55 starts with the goal of GHL's best save percentage.
3b)  I will play the hot hand in goal and Pohl will be given a long leash to keep the starting job.  In the event George Mercredi earns the starting job from Pohl, the same goal applies.
    4) Svend Clausen - 82 OVR Forward ... most GHL Points and/or Goals by a rookie.
    5)  Jeremie Cline - 97 OVR Center ... best GHL +/-.
    6)  Any single player on the Stealheads to record a Gordie Howe Hattrick.  If accomplished, that player will earn a $2M roster bonus.

Carrying over a tradition from game world Biscuit, I present the Cage Italian National Team for Season 5.  This was a bit time consuming, but enjoyable to pull together.
Led by 88 overall power forward, Oscar Bresciano, and 87 overall offensive defenseman, Vitaliy Leon - both of whom play for GHL's Eldred Elite.
There are also a few youngsters to watch who will be stars for years to come.  18 year old forwards Leonardo Piatti and Matias Boudianski, who were GHL 1st round picks this past season - along with defenseman Michael Papa Waigo, who was a GHL 1st round pick the season prior.
Captained by 23 year old, 80 overall defenseman, Luca Bonera.

Buzzed by Paul's idea in Cage, I started to put together some small nations' national team squads. I did in 14 F, 8 D, 3 G format, tried to split the 14 into 5 C + 9 F, but where centers were clearly better than the last few forwards there I went with them. Just to be clear, I only looked at overall (what I try to avoid when building my team tho), so it's rather the best team than the right one  Any questions, requests, advice and comments are welcome as well  I also used a bit more colors in the player traits, according to the order of traits in the help files
Let's start with the Gli Azzurri roster here too:
Interesting to see they have a lot of free agents, almost no depth in wingers, and their best goalie is down in the Czech league.
Ones to watch: Pablo Zambrotta, the 87 ovr center and Samuele Perico, the 84 ovr defender, both with plenty of GHL experience, and Cristian Diego Alves, the recent BHL draftee who can grow into an important player for this team.
As you can see, their D-line is getting old, but they try to compensate it with size and toughness

A while ago someone had mentioned a high (non goalie) performance rating and I forget what it was.  Today, Terho Huhtala had a performance rating of 88.  That might be the highest single game performance I've ever had from a skater position.
Interesting story around Huhtala.  I acquired him in an early season 2 trade that sent an all star goalie out West in exchange for Huhtala, Amick and a GHL 1st.  The jury is still out on whether it was a bad trade or not as I still feel like the goalie doesn't perform up to his rating, but on paper I probably shouldn't have made it.  I was hesitant to acquire him given his low Defense and Spirit, but he quickly became one of my top scorers in season 2 and always seemed to score in big moments (I guess that Heroic trait means something afterall).  Going into season 3 free agency, one of the games best forwards, Joesph Rackley, became available via relegation.  I decided to make a play for him, but needed to clear some cap first.  Huhtala became the odd man out and the only option was waivers.  I knew it was a giant risk as it left me with a smidge over 10 million to bid.  But... I tried to be sneaky about it, thinking that I could put Huhtala on waivers for an hour or so and recall him if I didn't sign Rackley (I actually made a suggestion quite some time ago that players should stay on waivers for at least 2 days before being able to call them back so don't judge me 😀).  But being on the East Coast, USA makes that plan difficult as free agents happen sometime between 2-4am.  Well around 1am I threw on on waivers and within 10 minutes someone claimed him.   To add insult to injury, my 10.1M bid was not enough to get Rackley as someone else ended up bidding 12+M (thanks Peekaboo... jerk).  So my high risk, high reward plan backfired greatly.  My offense really struggled last season and that was a big reason as I never managed to replace him.  I think the team that put the waiver bid reached out the following day and asked why I had put him on waivers and I explained my reasoning.  I'm pretty sure the other manager either offered to remove the claim or offer some type of trade for him, but I refused stating that I knew it was risky and that I should live with it and let it play out.  Think he ended up with 7-8 bids and eventually went to another Eastern team.  That team ended up relegating last season and I jumped on the chance to get him back... and it's a good thing because over the first 8 games he leads my team in points (7+4) with a +5 and 80 performance.  We are currently 5-0-2-1, but would probably be 1-0-2-5 without him.
    Good times.

Good memory.  Stang had a career series against me in the season 2 playoffs.
Slight misperception, though, as I don't rage.  At least not a serious rage as I tend to enjoy when non-standard events occur.  I do remember pointing it out and giving my team the hairdryer treatment because of it.  But at this point I've come to realize that a CHL team would take us out in the playoffs (specifically 3 games to 1).
Fairly certain the game coding goes something like
    =IF(AND(Manager="Paul T",Game="Round 1 of Playoffs"),Lose series 3-1,jump to rest of code)

Energy line is about 60% of your answer. Shut down is that but only to the skilled players on the opposing team. The last 40% is the players you put on that line. Most managers seem to be wary of making such a line as the players in question typically lack skill for physicality and spirit.

Edit: The next thing is that you have to give the players enough time on ice to make a positive difference. I see a lot of 4th lines playing 6-8 minutes a night. That is too little time on ice to have a positive impact in the desired role. Don't be afraid to give your 4th line 10-12 minutes a night. So long as you have them in the right role playing the right line style and they are comfortable playing in your system they will do well. Case in point Matthew Stang. Remember when another manager was raging at the fact that Stang essentially won a playoff series for my team? His performance rating is in the green for a very good reason despite his apparent lack of skill.

I'd love a targeting option.  For instance, we already have Left Wing Lock, why not have a target for certain player, etc.  I also wish we could differentiate between lines the tactic they use.  Some I want to be assholes, others I want to only take a punch and walk away.  Having everyone on the team with the same tactic takes away the point of having different lines.  But realize I am nitpicking at this point!  But there are teams where all I really care about is hurting them as much as possible no matter the final score, haha.  Just give us THAT option and I'll be happy!

We are the Lords of the Overtime! We are huffing and puffing and always find ourselves in an uphill battle, and if we don't lose in regulation time, then comes the lucky escape! I have a suspicion that there will be no lucky escape against the Sebastian Storm. They have a superior squad, and Dave "granpubah" Calloway is a very experienced manager with great tactical skill. I have learnt a lot about the game's tactical aspects just watching his team, and analyzing our battles. My team started the career in the LIHL, the Storm is a well settled SHL team, so it will be a great challenge.
Smashvilles4Real is going to travel to the Knights, they have a terrific team, so Smash need to dig deep if they want to steal some points!:) The Knights offered me Dawkins in a trade, and I feel some regret because I rejected the offer.
    That's an interesting trade:

From Knights (SHL) to Twisters (BHL)
    SHL level 1st round pick
    SHL level 2nd round pick
    SHL level 2nd round pick

    From Twisters to Knights
    CHL level 1st round pick
    CHL level 2nd round pick
    CHL level 1st round pick
    BHL level 2nd round pick
    J. Marquardt (C) 31, years enforcer overall rating 71.

Tomorrow in the early hours (here in Hungary) the Steam will have a big-big challenge, they are going to head-to-head with the Big Ducks. The Portland team found their captain and some magic formula and they won 4 games in a row! :) Packer the Steam's center has 14 points after 11 games (4+10), Tage Thomsen has 7+9 so he is the most effective attacker in the other team. This will be a great game, I am going to check the result after I wake up! :)

    Good stuff... thanks, Wendel!
I am surprised my goalie doesn't bump my ranking down more.  He's only better than teams 11-14, but worst out of the Top 10 teams in the East.  Let's see how that plays out again.
Also hope everything is good with Erzac.
