  2. Carpenter Closes Out Billikens Recruiting Class ST. LOUIS | Lamar Carpenter is officially a Billiken. The Illinois shooting guard signed his Letter-of-Intent today and joined Italian power forward Dominic Moretti in the Saint Louis 88 recruiting class. Carpenter narrowed his college choices down to the Billikens and Western Illinois. After waiting over three weeks from the beginning of the signing period, he finally decided he wanted to be a Billiken and signed with them. Carpenter is 5-foot-10 and comes from Tri-Valley High School in Downs, Illinois. He was ranked as the No. 115 shooting guard in his class and has the potential to make an immediate impact at Saint Louis. Carpenter was targeted early in the recruiting process by Billikens coach Jeremy Knight due to his great athleticism and perimeter shooting. He needs to work on his defense, but he should be one of the Billikens top two or three 3-point shooters from the moment he steps foot on campus. With his ability and the lack of depth at the guard position, Carpenter should see the floor quite a bit this season. While Carpenter enters a situation with a thin backcourt, Moretti will enter a very crowded, and well-established, front court. Moretti, at 6-foot-7 and 225 pounds, boasts a frame made for banging in the low post. He appears to be slightly more athletic than most of the post players on the Saint Louis squad, but he is still very raw. The best scenario for him would be to redshirt the upcoming season and adjust to the American style of basketball while working on his game. If he doesn’t redshirt it’s highly unlikely he will see much playing time with so many established post players returning. Entering the recruiting period many thought that Knight would sign two guards due to the lack of depth and his view that you can never have too many guards. It certainly seemed feasible that he could also take a guard and a wing player to help space the floor. Knight certainly got a guard that can space the floor with Carpenter. Most doubted that he would sign a post player unless it was the right player that could develop and take over next season when Randy Erhardt and Dennis Ross graduate. Is Moretti the right post player? Time will only tell, but he is certainly very raw and somewhat of a risky signing at this point.

  6. Billikens Season Ends Just Short of Postseason Bid ST. LOUIS | The members of the Saint Louis basketball team waited anxiously Sunday night to see if they would receive a bid to play in the college basketball postseason. Twenty-four hours later the reality has set in: The Billikens’ season is over. Saint Louis knew it had no chance at earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament. However, a bid to the NIT seemed plausible. The Billikens had a modest 16-13 overall record but boasted solid numbers in RPI and strength of schedule. Saint Louis played the 66th toughest schedule in the NCAA, second in the Atlantic 10 Conference only to Richmond’s 57 SOS. The Billikens also had a top 100 RPI ranking, coming in at 88. While the RPI ranking was far from an NIT lock, it certainly left players and coaches hopeful for a bid. For comparison, fellow A-10 member Rhode Island finished the season ranked 85th in RPI and received a No. 7 seed in the NIT. This season Saint Louis its toughest schedule in almost 30 years and finished with a top 100 RPI for the first time in seven years. However, Jeremy Knight’s rebuilding project still has progress to be made. The Billikens will have two scholarships to fill this offseason. Looking ahead to next year in the backcourt, upcoming junior David Phillips will most likely bump into the starting point guard position and Ryan More appears to be the early favorite at the 2-guard spot after starting the previous six games at the position. Neither player is elite at their position, but both are very solid options for starters. The only guards coming off the bench will be Bernard Jackson, who primarily played small forward this season, and Lewis Waugh who started the first 20 games of the season at shooting guard. Robert Montano will definitely see major playing time at small forward. This past season Montano, the No. 58 small forward coming out of high school, sat out due to being academically ineligible. Whether he starts at small forward from game one or not, expect Montano to be the starter by the end of the season. This will allow Jackson to move back to being a guard and not have to play out of position. In the post expect Greg Coulston to return as the starting center and be a key focal point for the offense next season. Randy Erhardt and Dennis Ross will be the power forwards, but as to which one will be the primary starter is anyone’s guess. Erhardt started at power forward two years ago as freshmen and Ross started at center that season. Last season Erhardt continued to start at the position while Ross came off the bench. This past season the players swapped roles with Ross starting and Erhardt coming off the bench. Erhardt appears to be the most productive of the two players but its anyone’s guess as to which one will actually start. Saint Louis’ post will primarily be a three man rotation among the previous players mentioned. Keith Shaul will see some minutes on the court as a rebounder off the bench. Steven Hildebrant is another power forward that redshirted this previous season. He’s been raved as an excellent ball handler, passer, and defender. He also has the ability to stretch the floor from the post. However, his inside game is basically non-existent. His game will improve over the offseason, but expect him to see mop up minutes. After assessing the roster, the Billikens will most likely try to bring in another guard and small forward for depth at each position, or potentially bring in two guards with the versatility to play multiple positions. There is no question that Knight had made progress with the Billikens program in his three years at the helm, but there is also much more progress to be made. One of the biggest weaknesses in the Billikens this season was the inability to rebound or make free throws. If Knight and his staff can address those concerns during the offseason there’s no reason that Saint Louis shouldn’t contend for the A-10 Championship. Next season could be a make or break year for Knight at Saint Louis and a postseason bid would certainly go a long way.

  10. Saint Louis Adds Three Players on Signing Day ST. LOUIS | Saint Louis basketball coach Jeremy Knight announced the addition of three prep players to the Bilikens program on the first day of the signing period. Steven Hildebrant, Robert Montano, and Lewis Waugh signed letters-of-intent with the Saint Louis program and will all be freshmen in the fall. “I’m really excited about these three young men entering our program,” Knight said at a press conference, “Each one of them has something that he can bring to the table and help us be a better basketball team.” Hildebrant is a 6-4 power forward from Franklin, Louisiana. He prepped at Hanson Memorial High School and was ranked as the No. 270 overall player and the No. 65 power forward for the class of 87. “Steven is a guy who has great speed for a post player. He also has a really good guard skillset for a big man; he can shoot the ball some and he’s great at handling and passing the ball so that should be able to give us an extra wrinkle (in the offense) and allow him to draw big defenders out to the perimeter and attack them from there. He’s athletic and an excellent defender. His post game really needs to develop in order to become a more complete player, but he is perfectly capable of coming in and giving us a defensive presence off the bench from day one.” Montano is a 6-foot-5 small forward from Middlebury, Indiana. He prepped at Northridge High School and was ranked as the No. 265 overall player and No. 58 small forward. He is currently academically ineligible to compete in Division I athletics. “When you watch Robert play the first thing that stands out to you is his athleticism. He’s a good athlete and a great defender first and foremost. Another great thing about him is that he has excellent ball handling and passing skills. He’s a better ball handler and passer than a couple of the guards currently on our team. With his skillset we’re getting a guy that can defend three or four positions and even play point guard at a high level if needed. We’re very excited about Robert joining our program. He is currently academically ineligible, but he’s working as hard as he can to become eligible. His goal is to score high enough on the SAT to become eligible to participate in the fall. If he doesn’t become eligible he will either sit out the year here at Saint Louis or possibly play a year at the JUCO level.” The final player to sign with the Bilikens was Waugh, a 6-foot-1 point guard from Bishop J.V. Sullivan High School in Baton Rogue, Louisiana. “Lewis is a kid that we’re very excited about. He’s kind of similar to Ryan More coming out of high school in that neither one of them was ranked or very highly recruited, but they both have just an extraordinary amount of potential. Lewis needs to develop some, but once he does he’s going to be a big time guard in this league. He’s a great defender right now with good athleticism and speed for the position. He’s working on dribbling and passing the ball, as well as his shot, and once he gets those skills developed watch out. He’s going to take off.” “Overall I’m extremely excited about this class. We had three openings and were able to sign three players that we feel like are quality players that fit our needs. This upcoming season will be my first season at Saint Louis that we have a full roster of 12 scholarship players. With our first two classes we signed some good guys and a couple of JUCO guys so this time we didn’t need to go out and find someone who could come in and make an immediate impact. We had the luxury of being able to be a little more selective and really get some guys that we want and not need them to be thrown into the fire from day one. They can take their time and learn and the system and get some playing time without having to force them to play 25 minutes every night. “Another great thing is that with this class we also have a roster of 12 players that my staff and I have recruited and signed every single one of them. We officially have all of “our guys” in the program now so there’s no more room for excuses. The honeymoon is over. It’s time to take off and really start reaching our goals of competing for the Atlantic-10 championship and playing in the NCAA Tournament.”

  14. Karsten Looks to Finish Strong During Senior Season ST. LOUIS | When Jeremy Knight arrived at Saint Louis 18 months ago he inherited a program with just a handful of players on the roster. Knight watched film on each player to evaluate them. During his evaluations, one player caught Knight’s eye. “Bruce Karsten immediately stood out to me,” Knight said. “He was guy that was the returning leading scorer and started every game since he was a true freshmen. To accomplish those feats in the Atlantic 10 you have to be a special player.” Karsten is a senior guard and the leader of the Bilikens mens basketball team on the court. Karsten will play in, and is projected to start, his 100th game as a Biliken Thursday when Saint Louis hosts George Washington in an Atlantic 10 game. Karsten prepped at Buford High School in Lancaster, South Carolina and was ranked as the No. 92 point guard as a senior. He chose Saint Louis over several other mid-major programs and made an immediate impact. Karsten started every game as a freshman and played 24.9 minutes per game. He also averaged 6.5 points per game in his first season also. “It’s crazy how far I’ve come,” Karsten said. “Coming out of high school I felt like I was overlooked. I felt like I was better than the No. 92 guard in the country. I felt like I belonged in a major conference. But [the high-majors] didn’t think I was able to play for them and I’m very grateful that Saint Louis believed in me and gave me a chance. When I arrived as a freshman I knew I wanted to make an immediate impact and show all of the bigger schools that they made a mistake overlooking me. I started my very first game as a freshman and here I am getting ready for my 100th game. It’s crazy how fast it flies by.” Karsten has grown into go-to player for the Billikens throughout his four years on campus. He led the team in scoring last season and currently leads the team in scoring this season as well with 14.1 ppg, which is also the fifth highest scoring average in the A-10. Karsten currently has scored 1,052 points in his career (10.6 ppg) and is projected to finish in the top five of the school’s all-time scoring list. Karsten is also currently averaging career highs in field goal, 3-point, and free throw percentages. Karsten is shooting 51.8% from the field, which is seventh in the A-10, and 80.9% from the charity stripe (5th in the A-10). He also leads the A-10 with a 50.6% 3-point field goal percentage. Despite all of Karsten’s success, he has never been apart of a winning season at Saint Louis and he has never received all-conference recognition. The Billikens records during his career have been 3-24, 12-15, and 7-20. However, Saint Louis is currently 11-7 and with his on-court performance thus far, it’s very possible that Karsten will experience his first winning season and also receive All-Atlantic 10 honors this season. “I still have a chip on my shoulder,” said Karsten. “I felt like last year I deserved to be on an all-conference team. I feel like I’m one of the best guards in the Atlantic 10 and sometimes myself or other guys on the team get overlooked because we have had losing records in the past. Last season we played with six new guys on the team. Of course we were gonna struggle with so much new talent coming in. That doesn’t mean that we didn’t have good players. I’ve really tried to step up my game to show the A-10 that we do have some good players here at Saint Louis and that I am one of the best guards in the league. And as a result of that we’re also going to win more games than they’ve won around here in a while and really open people’s eyes to what’s happening at Saint Louis. “I know Coach Knight always talks about laying the foundation and building for the future, but I want to let everyone else know that I want to win now. And I think we are good enough to win now. We just have to go out there and continue to play to the best of our ability and in the end I believe we’ll come out on top.”
  15. Billikens Add Three Players on Signing Day ST. LOUIS | Saint Louis men’s basketball coach Jeremy Knight announced the signing of three prep players for the upcoming 86 season. Knight and his staff received signed letters-of-intent on signing day from guards David Phillips and Bernard Jackson and center Greg Coulston. “We’re extremely excited to have these three young men join our family here at Saint Louis,” Knight said in a press conference. “Each one possesses the intangibles and characteristics that we look for in our players both on and off the court.” The first LOI received this morning was from David Phillips. Phillips is a 5-foot-11 point guard from Hampshire High School in Hampshire, Tennessee. Rivals has Phillips ranked as the No. 278 overall prospect and the No. 47 point guard in the class of 86. Phillips averaged 30.1 ppg during his senior campaign and helped lead the Hawks to a TSSAA Division I Class A playoff berth. “David is a great kid who really has a knack for putting the ball through the rim. He needs to improve his defense, but other than that we really like where his skillset is coming out of high school. He’s definitely a guy that has some versatility and could potentially play both guard positions for us.” The next LOI received belonged to Bernard Jackson from Cole Camp High School in Cole Camp, Missouri. Jackson is a 6-foot-1 point guard and ranked by Rivals as the No. 271 overall prospect and the No. 44 point guard. Jackson averaged 29.5 ppg last year and led his team to a District 13 championship. He also led his team to the quarterfinals of the MSHSAA Class 3 tournament. “Bernard is a guy we really focused on during his junior year of high school when we first arrived at Saint Louis. We really like his skillset and his game. I believe that a key to building and maintaining a great program is to keep the top talent in your state at home and Bernard is definitely one of the top players from Missouri. He’s more of a traditional point guard at this moment but he has the potential to really work on his jump shot and possibly be a combo guard for us in the future. One of the key traits we like in recruits is versatility and Bernard certainly has the potential to be a versatile guard for us.” The final LOI received by the Billikens staff was from 6-foot-11 center Greg Coulston from St. Rita High School in Chicago. Coulston averaged 9.6 ppg and was ranked by Rivals as the No. 185 center. Coulston also helped lead the Mustangs to a berth in the IHSA Class 4A Tournament. “Greg is going to come in and give us another big body that protects the rim. He’s a good rebounder and has an excellent defensive presence. His low post game is still developing and with some work with our coaching staff I really think he’ll become a well rounded, complete big man for us for the next couple of years.” Knight and his staff still have one scholarship open. It is currently unknown if they will try to fill it or be contempt with the team they currently have. Saint Louis failed to sign a small forward, which was a need heading into the offseason. However, Knight has been known to play versatile guards at the 3 as he did last season with Dikembe Abdula and newcomer Ryan Doran. Doran played point guard at Clarendon College in Texas before moving to small forward at Saint Louis. With recruiting winding down its only a matter of time until Saint Louis tips off year two of the Jeremy Knight era. The Billikens will open the season with an exhibition game against Missouri State followed by another exhibition game against VMI before opening the regular season against Central Florida.
